The Non-Consensus 1992 Consensus, Austin Horng En Wang, Yao Yuan Yeh, Charles K.S. Wu, Fang Yu Chen

Political Science Faculty Research

The 1992 Consensus is perhaps the most crucial political term for cross-strait relations. Surveys show that the public consistently supports it in Taiwan. Despite the alleged broad support, there has not been an academic study examining if Taiwanese people understand the content of the 1992 Consensus. Such an inquiry is important as the administration in Taiwan has yet accepted the Consensus in its interactions with Beijing. A nearly representative online survey was conducted in July 2018, and 1001 Taiwanese respondents were recruited to choose among different “definitions” of the 1992 Consensus. Results show that only one-third of the respondents chose …

Dampak Penerapan Kebijakan Self Assessment Guru Dalam Program Pengembangan Keprofesian Berkelanjutan (Pkb) Di Tahun 2016 Dan 2018 Terhadap Hasil Uji Kompetensi Guru (Ukg) Di Indonesia, Indri Astuti Irmalita, Thia Jasmina

Jurnal Kebijakan Ekonomi

The Continuous Professional Development (CPD) program and Teacher Competency Test (TCT) have been national programs to enhance teachers' competency in Indonesia since 2012. In 2016, there was a change in the implementation of the CPD program where the teacher self assessment policy was applied as an instrument in alternative learning mode (various mode) of the CPD program. However, subsequently, in 2017-2018, its implementation was changed to only a face-to-face mode for all results of the teacher self assessment. The main objective of this study is to see how the change of the implementation of the teacher self assessment policy in …

Webinar: Rethinking Streets During Covid, Clare Haley, John Larson-Friend, Marc Schlossberg, Aliza Whalen

TREC Webinar Series

Re-allocating space on streets to accommodate new uses – particularly for walking, biking, and being – is not new. However, COVID-era needs have accelerated the process that many communities use to make such street transitions. Many communities quickly understood that the street is actually a public place and a public good that serves broader public needs more urgent than the free flow or the storage of private vehicles. This seminar describes a new case study book that captures some of these quick changes to city streets in response to societal needs during COVID, with two open questions: 1. What changes …

Urban Resilience And Impact On Utility Services - Panel Discussion Iii, Noman Ahmed, Laeeq Ahmed, Sadia Dada, Javed Younas

CBER Conference

The government services departments are ill-equipped to provide sufficient services to the people of Karachi. The authorities are solely responsible for lack of provision of services resulting in the city’s dysfunction in the event of natural disasters. The physical existence of service delivery corridors should be notified to the public and a comprehensive plan needs to be put in place to create awareness about the rights of the consumers and utilities service providers. 75% of Karachi today does not experience load-shedding, adding that the illegal encroachment in the city is leading to safety impairment. Currently the eco-system is not conducive …

Wage Gap Among Urban Natives And Rural-Urban Migrants In Pakistan, Muhammad Umair, Lubna Naz Apr 2021

Wage Gap Among Urban Natives And Rural-Urban Migrants In Pakistan, Muhammad Umair, Lubna Naz

CBER Conference

Pakistan has a total labor force of 65.5 million in 2019. According to the Labour Force Survey 2017-18, more than one-third of the labor force is working in urban areas, and one-tenth comprises rural-urban migrants. It is evident that rural-urban migration increases labor supply in the urban labor market and consequently causes a reduction in wages, particularly for unskilled and semi-skilled workers. This study makes the first attempt to evaluate the wage gap among urban native and rural-urban migrant workers using a sample of 12,302 workers, comprising 10,793 urban natives and 1,509 rural-urban migrants, extracted from the latest Labour Force …

It discovers the prospects of nuclear power in Pakistan and use of renewable energy for economic activities. Further, the impact of GDP growth, none-renewable energy consumption and renewable energy consumption has been examined on carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in Pakistan. The ARDL model was executed and the results showed that in Pakistan, non-renewable energy consumption has significantly contributed in CO2 …

As Sacred, As Sustainable: The Normative Dimension Of Sustainable Economics, Amana Raquib, Omar Javaid, Gulnaz Anjum

CBER Conference

The self-esteem, self-image and subsequently self-worth of young consumers all around the globe, are determined by unsustainable consumption habits. This is equally true for Muslim youth who are as vulnerable to the pressure of building their self-image as consumers. This has led to adverse effects on the ecosystem and therefore, goes against the United Nation’s sustainable development goals (Goal no. 6,7,11-15). This paper argues that by changing the criterion to gauge and establish their self-image, self-esteem, and self-worth, we can influence the degree of sustainability of the consumption patterns of young Muslim individuals. This would subsequently undo the undue pressure …

Innovative Social Work Field Placements In Public Libraries, Sarah C. Johnson Apr 2021

Innovative Social Work Field Placements In Public Libraries, Sarah C. Johnson

Publications and Research

While the collaborative trend among professional social workers and librarians has accumulated much-deserved attention for several years, literature about social work students partnering with public libraries is only beginning to emerge. In fact, there are at least 100 branches that host social work students, yet academic literature examining the scope of these collaborations is sparse. Student placements do exist at Canadian and Australian libraries, yet the current research focuses on the bulk of known partnerships based in the United States. This paper includes information on the prevalence, nature, and fit of social work education and public library partnerships, garnered from …

Over-Complexifying Social Reality: A Critical Exploration Of Systematicity And Rigidification In Ethnographic Practice And Writing, Anson Au Apr 2021

Over-Complexifying Social Reality: A Critical Exploration Of Systematicity And Rigidification In Ethnographic Practice And Writing, Anson Au

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative methodological development has produced canonical tendencies that over-complexify and fix a fluid and lived social world. Meanwhile, critical theory has produced critiques on methodology but without enough attention to the qualitative tradition. I bridge these gaps by using an Adornoian position to interrogate the concepts of systematicity, rigidification, complexification, and their problems in ethnographic research and qualitative methodology. I conduct an urban ethnography and autoethnography of the metropolitan blasé as a public attitude of indifference to articulate an alternative, quotidian approach to ethnography that better captures social embeddedness, meaning-creation, and how contexts should drive data collection, analysis, and method-selection.

This article makes use of published and archival sources in order to clarify the utopia of a “World Art” that shaped UNESCO and led to the “Archives of Colour Reproductions of Works of Art”, a project of worldwide collect and diffusion of images of “masterworks” inspired by Malraux’s “Museum without walls”. Rising Stars And Underdogs: The Role Race And Parental Education Play In Predicting Mentorship, Veronica Fruiht, Jordan Boeder, Thomas Chan Apr 2021

Rising Stars And Underdogs: The Role Race And Parental Education Play In Predicting Mentorship, Veronica Fruiht, Jordan Boeder, Thomas Chan

Psychology | Faculty Scholarship

Research suggests that youth with more financial and social resources are more likely to have access to mentorship. Conversely, the rising star hypothesis posits that youth who show promise through their individual successes are more likely to be mentored. Utilizing a nationally representative sample (N = 4,882), we tested whether demographic characteristics (e.g., race, SES) or personal resources (e.g., academic/social success) are better predictors of receiving mentorship. Regression analyses suggested that demographic, contextual, and individual characteristics all significantly predicted access to mentorship, specifically by non-familial mentors. However, conditional inference tree models that explored the interaction of mentorship predictors by …
