A Program Review Of Trauma-Informed Mindfulness: An Alternative Treatment Program For Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nicole Hale

Undergraduate Research Conference

This study was conducted as part of the student’s senior field practicum experience at the Montgomery County Women’s Center (MCWC) during the Spring 2020 semester. Current literature identifies symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (such as stress and anxiety) to be consistent with symptoms experienced by survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV). As noted by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk, a leading expert in the treatment of complex trauma, the goal in treating those who experience symptoms related to PTSD with mindfulness techniques is to help those individuals learn to live and function in the present, without being held …

The Relationship Among Social Support, Stress, And Inflammatory Markers Among College Students: A Correlational Study, Bailey Bryant Apr 2021

The Relationship Among Social Support, Stress, And Inflammatory Markers Among College Students: A Correlational Study, Bailey Bryant

Campus Research Month

The relationship between psychological factors and the immune system is a relatively new area of study. Nevertheless, it has been found that significant relationships do exist among these variables; prolonged exposure to maladaptive forms of these variables may lead to the development or expression of inflammation. There is, however, a lack of studies that look at more than one variable in relationship to inflammation at a time. Thus, this study analyzes the correlation among social support, stress, and inflammatory markers among college students.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The accessibility and use of electronic information resources enhance librarians research output by providing various information needed for research. Librarians are regarded as academics and are expected to publish like other academic staff, but it seems that librarians record low research output when compared with lecturers or other academic staff. The aim of this study is to investigate accessibility, use of electronic information resources and research output of librarians in universities in Ekiti, Ondo and Osun States of Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted for the research. The findings reveals that there was high level of accessibility and use …

Ann Allen Shockley: An Activist-Librarian For Black Special Collections, Shaundra Walker Apr 2021

Ann Allen Shockley: An Activist-Librarian For Black Special Collections, Shaundra Walker

Library Faculty Scholarship

While Ann Allen Shockley’s literary career has received a wealth of critique, her work as a librarian and her writings about Black Special Collections have not received as much analysis. When viewed through the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT), Shockley emerges as an activist- librarian, one worthy of further study and consideration. Her writing and instruction on Black special collections highlight the liberatory potential of collection building to address the marginalization that traditional cataloging and classification systems impose on materials about the experiences of Black people. When applied to collection building practices, CRT reveals the ways in which Shockley’s …

Christianity And Covid: Conservative Authoritarianism, Brooke Kimet, Claire Shipley Apr 2021

Christianity And Covid: Conservative Authoritarianism, Brooke Kimet, Claire Shipley

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Since the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States, the CDC has implemented guidelines to help reduce its spread. Despite efforts, people often do not follow these guidelines, leaving many questions about why so many deviate. The current research examines the connection between religious belief, observance, and the mistrust of scientific findings in relation to adherence to CDC COVID guidelines. We created a survey measuring peoples’ religious beliefs, trust and mistrust of sources, and COVID-19 practices in a population of Christians. Analyses examined correlations between religious variables and pandemic-related behavior. One hypothesis suggests that, generally speaking, higher Christian religiosity will predict …

The Relationship Between Focused Attention And Object Permanence In Infants With Motor Delays, Amber Delprince, Melanie Tommer, Claire Boe, Jessica Spirnak, Karl Jancart, Regina Harbourne Ph.D

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Background: Focused attention (uninterrupted attention to task) and understanding of object permanence (knowledge that objects exist when not seen) are two constructs in infancy that build future cognitive skills. The relationship between the two in infants with delays is poorly understood.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of early focused attention at the point of early sitting independence to object permanence skill one year later in infants with motor delays.

Methods: 15 infants (aged 8-16 months) with motor delays were scored on an analog scale of 1-5 (5 = greatest focus) to indicate their level …

The Phoenix, Fernanda Perez-Alvarez

Montserrat Annual Writing Prize

This article uses a mythical creature, the phoenix, to examine and illustrate the biological principles for generation of an adult body plan from a single cell. Using the study of developmental biology, it explores the cellular and molecular biology that underpins the massive complexity of creating an adult body plan. It also explores the similarities and differences between different embryos, and how nature and evolution have shaped the biology of those embryos to create different body plans.

Redefining Affordable Housing In Ma, Maria Fernanda De La Fuente Martinez Apr 2021

Redefining Affordable Housing In Ma, Maria Fernanda De La Fuente Martinez

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Housing is considered affordable if it costs 30% or less of a household’s income, and “is deed-restricted to income-eligible low- or moderate-income residents” (MAPC, n.d.). According to the Joint Center of Housing Studies (JCHS), as of 2017, 31.5% of all American households were considered cost-burdened by rent, meaning they spent more than 30% of their income on rent. That same year, the percentage of severely cost-burdened households (those who spent over 50% of their income in rent) was 15.2%. This means that almost half of all Americans struggled to pay rent in 2017 (Veal & Spader, 2018).

“(Mis)Information Creation As A Process”: A Method For Teaching Critical Media Literacy Designed To Work With Students Of All Political Persuasions, Winn W. Wasson

Librarian Publications

After the advent of widespread coordinated disinformation during the 2016 U.S. presidential election campaign, librarians stepped up to combat misinformation and disinformation in their communities and the larger information ecosystem by applying principles and best practices of information literacy education. However, librarians walk a fine line on how to educate audiences to become critical consumers of information, particularly on politically sensitive topics. It is all too easy to lose audience members’ trust and receptiveness to our message when a component or the entirety of our presentation challenges the beliefs of participants too forcefully. When we teach information literacy sessions to …

Citizen Web Archiving: Empowering Undergraduates To Preserve The Internet, Kayla Harris, Stephanie Shreffler, Christina A. Beis

Marian Library Faculty Presentations

Increasingly, information that was once available in print is now available only online. There are many efforts by librarians to teach students how to evaluate sources, but in order to do that, the sources need to still exist. While librarians and archivists preserve information from the Internet through web archive collections, undergraduate students of this generation may not have considered that things on the Internet do not necessarily remain there forever, and that preservation requires a proactive approach. Through a co-curricular learning experience, a team of librarians and archivists created a self-guided, asynchronous program, Citizen Web Archiving: Preserving Websites for …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The scope and application of present web technology in the library and information sector have been increasingly transforming in terms of storage, processing, and delivery of services. Libraries, information centers, archives, museums, etc. are being driven to add meaningful and interoperable web-based library services to address the growing information needs of the users. One of the major developments in recent times is the adoption of semantic web technologies in providing web-based library services. Semantic web technology is an advanced web interface that offers structured web-based data and allows organizations or institutions to describe, communicate, retrieve and re-distribute over the web. …

A Quantitative Investigation Of Ovarian Cancer Disparities, Jimmy Valdes Apr 2021

A Quantitative Investigation Of Ovarian Cancer Disparities, Jimmy Valdes

Sociology ETDs

Ovarian cancer is the fifth most deadly form of cancer, and the leading cause of death among gynecologic malignancies in US women. Although this literature has empirically investigated parts of this phenomenon, several major gaps exist. First, this literature rarely attempts to theoretically contextualize the findings by explaining broader etiologies of ovarian cancer. It also does not attempt to explain how or why the social determinants of ovarian cancer disparity, primarily socioeconomic status and race, may be interrelated. Lastly, few studies have attempted to better understand the distinct ways in which Hispanics, as an ethnic group, fit into the ovarian …

Tractorcade: Investigating The Relationship Between Group Theory And The American Agriculture Movement's Attempt At Policy Change, Hanna M. Metzler

Honors Theses

This thesis aims to investigate the relationship between The American Agriculture Movement (AAM) and group theory, with a focus on AAM’s usage of Tractorcade as a tool to promote policy change. Gathering data through a myriad of sources - including existing literature, oral histories, newspaper articles, documents, and journal entires - this thesis analyzes AAM’s Tractorcade demonstration as a social movement aimed at influencing policy change. Utilizing Charles Tilly’s worthiness, unity, numbers, and commitment (WUNC) social movement framework, we find that although AAM employed strong unity and numbers, they failed in displaying substantial worthiness or commitment, ultimately leading to a …

Perceived Stigma Among Family Members Of Persons Suffering From Mental Illness: A Narrative Exploration From West Bengal, India, Bidisha Banerjee, Shikha Dixit

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, we report the findings of a qualitative study that, aims to understand the family members’ subjective experiences with perceived stigma of mental illness. The theoretical standpoint and the research method for the study employed are social constructivist theory and narrative inquiry respectively. We conducted semi-structured and in-depth interviews with family members and others accompanying patients to an outpatient unit of a psychiatric clinic. The professionals and the administrative staff at the clinic gave additional interviews. The constant comparative method was employed for the analysis of the narratives. The findings suggest the existence of perceived and direct stigma …
