Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The goal of this lesson is to introduce students to different methods of calculating biodiversity and to consider how different biodiversity indices are sensitive to species richness and species evenness. This lesson builds off of the previous lesson where students brainstormed different ways of determining biodiversity. The first activity engages students in developing a way to evaluate which cell-phone plan is best. The goal of the first activity of this lesson is to help students to understand that there are multiple ways to measure something. The second activity introduces four measures of biodiversity (species richness, species evenness, Simpson’s Index and …

Lesson Plan: Setting Up The Biodiversity Investigation, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is to connect the issues around biodiversity to the students’ field site. The lesson starts with a class discussion where students talk about what they believe the bird biodiversity is at their field site, and whether or not they believe it is likely to be higher in some areas compared to others. Then in groups students develop the research question they will be investigating in this module as well as their predictions for that research question. Students will return to this investigation four times during the module to collect data and then to analyze the …

Lesson Plan: Identifying Birds, Center For Urban Resilience
Lesson Plan: Identifying Birds, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students with taxonomy and basic birding skills, including using binoculars, navigating field guides and identifying birds. The lesson begins with a discussion of taxonomy and the importance of naming or identifying birds. The students are introduced to both the binoculars and field guides before they go outside to conduct a bird binocular race. During the binocular race, students use binoculars and field guides to identify pictures of birds on laminated cards. If time permits, students can practice their skills on a bird walk around the schoolyard. They will use these birding skills …

Lesson Plan: Bird Biodiversity Data Collection (Day 1), Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is for students to begin collecting observations in order to answer their research question as part of their field investigation and to inform their action plan. The lesson begins with a review of how to identify birds with the students identifying four birds shown in a PowerPoint. In their groups, students discuss their data collection protocol before they head outside. Students go outside to collect their first set of bird biodiversity data. The reflection question for today focuses on whether students need to revise or refine their methodologies in order to collect appropriate data for …

Lesson Plan: Biodiversity Game, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 06: Urban Biodiversity
The purpose of this lesson is to help students think about the factors that impact the biodiversity of an ecosystem as well as the characteristics of a community that allow it to be more sustainable. This lesson begins with a discussion on various factors that may impact the biodiversity of an area. Students then play a game to illustrate the idea that the more biodiverse a community, the more likely it is to survive various environmental impacts (it is more sustainable). Students will then read about and discuss factors that reduce biodiversity. When they play the game again, students will …

Where Is The Social Democracy In Subscription Paywalls? Effects And Impact Of Transitioning Journals From Subscriptions To Open Access On Researchers In Developing And Transition Economies, Colleen Campbell, Rick Burke
Digital Initiatives Symposium
Nearly 20 years after the Budapest, Berlin and Bethesda Declarations on open access, the global academic community continues to struggle toward realizing its objective of an open information environment in which the world’s scholarly and scientific literature is freely available and at the service of society to accelerate research, enrich education and lay the foundation for a common, global intellectual exchange. Championing the cause, stakeholders in some geographic contexts have succeeded in delivering open access publishing options for their research outputs by fostering highly-regarded, locally-developed journals, platforms and repositories, yet a an enormous portion of the world’s scholarly literature continues …

Occupational Design, Visual Communication Design, And Academic Commons Collaborate For Graphic Health Literacy In Philadelphia, Daniel Verbit, Monique Chabot, Beth Shirrell
TCLC Program Proceedings
Occupational therapy (OT) maximizes health,well-being, and quality of life for all people. Visual Communication Design (VCD) enables people to process and communicate information through the design of objects, environments, and interactions. Gutman Library’s mission is to work collaboratively with the university community to ensure that students successfully achieve institutional learning outcomes. VCD students collaborated with second-year OT students to address the prompt, ‘How might we improve health literacy in Philadelphia?’

Maintaining Your Identity: Supporting Our Own Faculty's Publishing While Participating In A Funded Consortia Publishing Program, Jennifer Coronado
Digital Initiatives Symposium
In May 2019, the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana was awarded a $525,000 grant from Lilly Endowment to improve student success and retention by supporting the use of open course materials across the 24 private institutional members. Since then, the PALSave administration team has reached over 100 faculty members across Indiana, created an adoption pilot program, and received over 40 faculty reviews for the Open Textbook Library. Now, PALSave is developing a publishing program, with full funding for five textbook creations over five years. The Butler University Libraries’ Scholarly Communication Team conducted a Digital Needs Assessment Survey and found …

POP 101: Queering the Archives
This presentation attempts to construct a history of the Maine Bisexual People’s Network (MBPN), drawing from primary sources from USM’s Special Collections, specifically from the LGBTQ+ Collection in the Jean Byers Sampson Center. Information includes when, why, and how the MBPN was founded, who founded the organization, important events in the MBPN’s history, and the experience of bisexuality for Mainers. Also included are images of the primary sources, such as clips from Our Paper: Serving the Alternative Community, a publication that served queer Mainers. While the MBPN was just one of several examples from Maine’s history of LGBTQ+ organizations, the …
From Vision To Action And Assessment: Creating An Open Educational Resources (Oer) Strategic Plan And Measuring Its Impact, Regina Gong
Digital Initiatives Symposium
The implementation of OER initiatives in higher education institutions typically begins with setting up a vision and establishing goals for the project. This process entails developing a strategic plan to help guide institutions on how to start an OER initiative to gain buy-in and support from campus stakeholders. The strategic plan helps translate the vision into concrete actions that are attainable as well as measurable. Furthermore, while cost savings to students are what institutions commonly report to indicate the impact of OER, adoption and usage goes beyond cost savings calculations. This presentation will discuss the OER strategic planning process and …

Academic Libraries, Science And Technology Development And The Nigerian Smart City Initiative (Nsci): Issues, Roles And Challenges, Emmanuel Okwu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper sought to unravel the contributions of academic libraries in Nigeria towards science and technology development for the building of smart Nigerian cities basedon the Nigerian Smart City Initiative (NSCI). The paper proposed a new model that shows the linkage between academic libraries, science and technology development and smart city development. A review of the state of the art of academic libraries in Nigeria indicated their failings in their expected rolesin stimulating science and technology development for the building of smart Nigerian cities. To revitalize Nigerian academic libraries, the paper advocated for developmental efforts by the government, university and …
