Straying From The Norm: Which Single Mothers Choose Non-Traditional Last Names For Their Children?, Cyrena Selden May 2020

Straying From The Norm: Which Single Mothers Choose Non-Traditional Last Names For Their Children?, Cyrena Selden

University Honors Theses

By analyzing characteristics of single mothers in the baseline wave of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS), I aim to discover which characteristics of single mothers predict their choice to give their newborn children non-traditional last names, or names other than the father's last name. My exploratory study focuses on finding significant relationships to illuminate predictors of mother’s surname choices. Initially mother's age, education, religiosity, political liberalness, race/ethnicity, and relationship to the father were analyzed. After analysis, the mother’s relationship with the father was found to be the most significant. Compared to mothers who are cohabiting with the …

Online Communication And Dating Relationships: Effects Of Decreasing Online Communication On Feelings Of Closeness And Relationship Satisfaction, Kieran T. Sullivan, Jessica Riedstra, Brenda Arellano, Bonnie Cardillo, Vanessa Kalach, Amrita Ram May 2020

Online Communication And Dating Relationships: Effects Of Decreasing Online Communication On Feelings Of Closeness And Relationship Satisfaction, Kieran T. Sullivan, Jessica Riedstra, Brenda Arellano, Bonnie Cardillo, Vanessa Kalach, Amrita Ram

Psychology

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of online communication on feelings of closeness and relationship satisfaction using an experimental design and to test whether these effects varied based on participants’ attitudes about online communication. Individuals in dating relationships were randomly assigned to two 48-hr conditions: communication as usual or refraining from online communication. Participants who reported that online communication was important for their dating relationships reported lower satisfaction and closeness after decreasing their online communication; there were no between-group differences among participants who reported relatively low importance. Thus, it appears that online communication has a positive …

Dynamic Changes In Eeg Power Spectral Densities During Nih-Toolbox Flanker, Dimensional Change Card Sort Test And Episodic Memory Tests In Young Adults, Judith G. Foy, Michael R. Foy

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Much is known about electroencephalograph (EEG) patterns during sleep, but until recently, it was difficult to study EEG patterns during conscious, awake behavior. Technological advances such as powerful wireless EEG systems have led to a renewed interest in EEG as a clinical and research tool for studying real-time changes in the brain. We report here the first normative study of EEG activity while healthy young adults completed a series of cognitive tests recently published by the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Cognitive Battery (NIH-TCB), a commonly-used standardized measure of cognition primarily used in clinical populations. In this preliminary study using …

Conceiving The Cuban Paradox: An Analysis Of Cuba’S Reproductive Healthcare Paradigm, Ashleigh E. Adams May 2020

Conceiving The Cuban Paradox: An Analysis Of Cuba’S Reproductive Healthcare Paradigm, Ashleigh E. Adams

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

This research paper explores certain socio-political conditions that have contributed to the paradox of the Cuban healthcare model, viewed through the lens of Cuban women’s sexual and reproductive health. By examining Cuba’s reproductive healthcare system paradigm, this paper examines the complex relationship between socio-political and economic determinants, and Cuban women’s decision/ability to reproduce and provide for their offspring.

Analysis of Cuba’s strategy and orientation reveals strengths, weaknesses, and contradictions that impact women’s reproductive choices and access to care. This research invites consideration of the ways in which this nation’s approach enhances women’s sexual and reproductive health. The Cuban model demonstrates …

International Migration, Development, And Policy: Reconsidering Migration Transition Theory—A Way Forward, Karin A. C. Johnson May 2020

International Migration, Development, And Policy: Reconsidering Migration Transition Theory—A Way Forward, Karin A. C. Johnson

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

Migration transition theories have been contested as they informed immigration policy in the Global North, which—based on assumptions that immigrants from developing countries may be a threat to social stability and economic opportunity—aimed to diminish emigration from the South. Development policies were proposed that could produce a “migration transition” in the South, where it was assumed that improved economic development would act as a substitute for migration and lead to minimal emigration, thus reducing overall immigration to the Global North. However, policies did not result in a migration transition. Acknowledging problematic rhetoric and contradictory policy and outcomes, this paper addresses …

Public Transportation Accessibility, Proximity To New York City, And Residential Property Values In New Jersey, Sangwan Lee, Michael Smart May 2020

Public Transportation Accessibility, Proximity To New York City, And Residential Property Values In New Jersey, Sangwan Lee, Michael Smart

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

In recent years as housing with better transit accessibility has become unaffordable to many households in many regions globally, the call to study the connection between transit and property values has shifted to concern itself with the negative consequences of transit access being capitalized into property values. The primary purpose of this research is to define the effect of station proximity and other characteristics on housing prices and provide evidence if there is displacement in the area with better accessibility to transit. The outcome reveals that locational factors are associated with housing prices. Inherent housing features, the number of beds, …

Co-Predatory Rule: International Cooperation With Respect To Cryptocurrency Taxation In Russia And Belarus, Jim Mignano May 2020

Co-Predatory Rule: International Cooperation With Respect To Cryptocurrency Taxation In Russia And Belarus, Jim Mignano

Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs

This article presents an example of how globalization and digitization force states to rely on international organization. Examining tax policy with respect to cryptocurrency—an innovative, global technology—the implication is that a state levying taxes on cryptocurrency must turn to international monitoring and enforcement regimes to support effective taxation. Based on Margaret Levi’s theory of predatory rule, I submit a theory of “co-predation” to explain international cooperation with respect to taxation of novel, cross-border technologies such as cryptocurrency. The Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI), an anti-tax evasion framework promulgated by the OECD, serves as an example of international cooperation. A comparison …

Environmental Predictors Of A Drug Offender Crime Script: A Systematic Social Observation Of Google Street View Images And Cctv Footage, Victoria A. Sytsma, Nathan Connealy, Eric L. Piza

Publications and Research

The extent to which environmental context has been considered when developing crime scripts has been limited to descriptions of locations offenders visit during the crime. This research contributes a description of the environmental characteristics of an open-air drug market and identifies environmental facilitators and inhibitors toward offender actions during a drug selling crime script. CCTV camera footage is combined with Google Street View to determine if physical disorder, decay, and ‘crime generators’ characterize the drug market under study. Crime generators such as retail facilities and bars and liquor stores are environmental facilitators toward a drug selling crime script; and transit …

Education As Commons, Children As Commoners: The Case Study Of The Little Tree Community, Yannis Pechtelidis, Alexandros Kioupkiolis May 2020

Education As Commons, Children As Commoners: The Case Study Of The Little Tree Community, Yannis Pechtelidis, Alexandros Kioupkiolis

Democracy & Education

This paper presents the emergent paradigm of the "commons" as an alternative value and action system in the field of education, and it critically draws out the implications of the commons for refiguring education and its potential contribution to democratic transformation. The paper delves into an independent pedagogical community, Little Tree, which is active in early childhood education and care, aiming to explore the ways in which children conduct themselves in accordance with the ethics and the logics of the commons and to show how they thereby unsettle the conventional meaning of citizenship. Proceeding from an enlarged notion of the …

Negating Amy Gutmann: Deliberative Democracy, Business Influence, And Segmentation Strategies In Education, Brian Ford May 2020

Negating Amy Gutmann: Deliberative Democracy, Business Influence, And Segmentation Strategies In Education, Brian Ford

Democracy & Education

The task of creating a public will is daunting in any political system, but a democracy dedicated to the principles of participation and public deliberation faces specific challenges, including overcoming organized opposition that may not accept democratic tenets. In the sphere of education (and social reproduction more generally), business-influenced movements to reform public education question many of the established goals and norms of democratic education and thus may be the vanguard of such opposition. In order to interpret and explore these movements, this article enlists Amy Gutmann's work as a heuristic device. In so doing, it looks at the task …

Corporate Archives In Silicon Valley: Building And Surviving Amid Constant Change, Paula Jabloner, Anna Mancini May 2020

Corporate Archives In Silicon Valley: Building And Surviving Amid Constant Change, Paula Jabloner, Anna Mancini

Journal of Western Archives

An historical understanding of the phenomenon that is Silicon Valley requires the collection and preservation of original records. With the rapid pace of change in the technology industry, how can archivists and their institutions preserve this corporate history? Two archivists address how they were able to found an archives at Cisco Systems and maintain another at Hewlett-Packard. Two common elements emerged: 1) the formation of a licensed limited company (LLC) as the legal structure for the archival repository, and 2) the use of outsourcing to staff both repositories. Outsourcing via a non-profit, in this case the Computer History Museum, or …
