It Takes A Village: Populating The Institutional Repository With Performing Arts Content, Anne Shelley Oct 2020

It Takes A Village: Populating The Institutional Repository With Performing Arts Content, Anne Shelley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Managing an institutional repository is not a project in its own right: rather, it is an operational service that involves conversations with faculty, students, and other content providers. However, once those stakeholders decide that the repository is a good, stable, discoverable home for their work, there are projects involved in populating the repository. This article presents a case study of how the author, a music librarian and institutional repository manager at Illinois State University, approached adding thousands of items from the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts into the institutional repository, ISU ReD: Research and eData.

The Impact Of Personality Traits On Panic Buying Behavior, Andrew Larsen, Genevieve Mcalexander, Kinsey Pomeroy Oct 2020

The Impact Of Personality Traits On Panic Buying Behavior, Andrew Larsen, Genevieve Mcalexander, Kinsey Pomeroy

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

We are interested in panic buying behavior during a pandemic within an undergraduate population. Since there is minimal research on COVID-19, we hope that our research will contribute to further investigations on this pandemic and other related psychological concepts and issues within the field. This is important because previous research has studied the relationship between buying behavior and natural disasters; however, there is a small amount of literature on COVID-19 because this is a new and rising topic that is changing day by day. Preparedness and risk perception are in tandem. We want to increase people’s knowledge about how to …

Viewers Duty To Know The Difference Between Opinion Journalism And Assertion Articles, Heather Waldo, Cade Kinzel Oct 2020

Viewers Duty To Know The Difference Between Opinion Journalism And Assertion Articles, Heather Waldo, Cade Kinzel

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The purpose of this presentation is to differentiate between opinion journalism and assertion articles. Our topic of early voting within a presidential election is important because people need to know the difference between reliable and unreliable information in order to stay accurately informed. This is crucial in viewers sharing only reliable and credible content instead of spreading false information. Sharing false or inaccurate information is detrimental to society because viewers have a false sense of a topic. Throughout this presentation, we will demonstrate the differences between opinion journalism and assertion articles through the deconstruction process of evaluating reliability we learned …

The Effects Of Different Living Environments On Anxiety During Covid-19, Nicole Copeland, Italy Gayles

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Because COVID-19 is such a new topic, we wanted to study how the virus impacted students' education by forcing students to learn via an online learning environment and how the change in learning environments affected students' anxiety levels. We chose to create a study where participants completed a survey that asked them to recall their thoughts and feelings from six months ago about taking online courses during the Spring 2020 semester. Most students were sent home for the last two months of the Spring 2020 semester. In the same survey, participants stated their thoughts and feelings about taking online courses …

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

This study will examine the relationship between preference for routine and psychological distress, and the personality trait openness to experience and psychological distress. Through research, we found that during the Covid-19 pandemic there has been a rise in rates of psychological distress. Psychological distress can be caused by a variety of different elements; however, in this case, we wanted to study how preference for routine and openness to experience relate to undergraduates students psychological distress. Our overall research question is “ Does routine preference and openness to experience have a relationship to rates of psychological distress? ” We predict that …

A Scoping Review Of Market Links Between Value Chain Actors And Small-Scale Producers In Developing Regions, Lenis Saweda O. Liverpool-Tasie, Ayala Wineman, Sarah Young, Justice Tambo, Carolina Vargas, Thomas Reardon, Guigonan Serge Adjognon, Jaron Porciello, Nasra Gathoni, Livia Bizikova Oct 2020

A Scoping Review Of Market Links Between Value Chain Actors And Small-Scale Producers In Developing Regions, Lenis Saweda O. Liverpool-Tasie, Ayala Wineman, Sarah Young, Justice Tambo, Carolina Vargas, Thomas Reardon, Guigonan Serge Adjognon, Jaron Porciello, Nasra Gathoni, Livia Bizikova

Libraries

Sustainable Development Goal 2 aims to end hunger, achieve food and nutrition security and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. This requires that small-scale producers be included in, and benefit from, the rapid growth and transformation under way in food systems. Small-scale producers interact with various actors when they link with markets, including product traders, logistics firms, processors and retailers. The literature has explored primarily how large firms interact with farmers through formal contracts and resource provision arrangements. Although important, contracts constitute a very small share of smallholder market interactions. There has been little exploration of whether non-contract interactions between small …

The Case For Oer In Lis Education, Stacy Katz Oct 2020

The Case For Oer In Lis Education, Stacy Katz

Publications and Research

The increasingly high cost of textbooks coupled with the pedagogical opportunities presented by Creative Commons licenses has provided fertile ground for the development of open educational resources (OER) initiatives as an impactful practice for improving student success. Librarians are leading advocates for OER, yet little has been published on how librarians learn about OER or how faculty use OER in library and information science (LIS) programs. For this study, the author surveyed LIS faculty about their awareness and usage of OER as well as the role they imagine for future librarians in open education. LIS faculty, current and future librarians, …

Distinction Between Indigenous And Western Cultural Conceptions Of The Earth And Its Relation To The Environment, John M. Zak Oct 2020

Distinction Between Indigenous And Western Cultural Conceptions Of The Earth And Its Relation To The Environment, John M. Zak

Student Publications

The differences between Indigenous and Western cultural conceptions of the Earth is a major cleavage between both communities and a source of tension and misunderstanding. Native American religious beliefs in communal ethics, the belief in the Earth and nature more broadly being a source of spiritual fulfillment and enlightenment, has encouraged Native Americans to work to safeguard the environment they feel a spiritual connection to. This is contrasted in Western notions of human centrality that encourages Western consumer economies to exploit resources for commercial profit that has led to the dispossession of Native lands and desecration of its sacredness in …

A Clean Energy Future: The Policy Environment Of Public Service Enterprise Group, Justin T. Letizia Oct 2020

A Clean Energy Future: The Policy Environment Of Public Service Enterprise Group, Justin T. Letizia

Student Publications

The very nature of environmental policy permeates all areas of society; climate change, in its essence, is inherently a public dilemma. Thus, strategies to address and mitigate the adverse effects of the climate crisis, whether originating from governmental actors or private corporations, must consider and account for the many stakeholders who stand to be impacted by its far-reaching policy. For a company such as PSEG to implement effective climate policy, it is required that they develop, maintain, and leverage relationships with multiple stakeholders at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels, as well as promote a positive reputation among its …

Nguyễn An Ninh’S Anti-Colonial Thought: A New Account Of National Shame, Kevin D. Pham Oct 2020

Nguyễn An Ninh’S Anti-Colonial Thought: A New Account Of National Shame, Kevin D. Pham

Political Science Faculty Publications

A source of national shame can be the perception that one’s nation is intellectually inferior to other nations. This kind of national shame can lead not to despair but to a sense of national responsibility to engage in creative self-renewal and to create national identity from scratch. An exemplar of someone who recognized and engaged with this kind of national shame is Nguyễn An Ninh (1900–1943), an influential Vietnamese anti-colonial intellectual in French colonial Vietnam. Ninh’s account of national shame challenges existing assumptions in political theory, namely that national identity requires national pride, that national shame comes from bad actions …

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

As a part of a larger, mixed-methods research study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 adults with depressive symptoms to understand the role that past health care discrimination plays in shaping help-seeking for depression treatment and receiving preferred treatment modalities. We recruited to achieve heterogeneity of racial/ethnic backgrounds and history of health care discrimination in our participant sample. Participants were Hispanic/Latino (n = 4), non-Hispanic/Latino Black (n = 8), or non-Hispanic/Latino White (n = 9). Twelve reported health care discrimination due to race/ethnicity, language, perceived social class, and/or mental health diagnosis. Health care discrimination exacerbated barriers to initiating and continuing …

Intentional Professional Development In Changing Times, Maggie Kiel-Morse

Articles by Maurer Faculty

I recently participated in the AALL Leadership Academy, held virtually on August 6, 7, and 14. The Leadership Academy has a reputation for fostering core leadership skills, and enhancing key tools and strategies for effective leadership, while also providing excellent networking opportunities for participants. I was excited and grateful to be accepted to participate, and to receive a grant from ALL-SIS. When the change to a virtual format was announced, I had some reservations about continuing to participate. Ultimately, I decided that whatever the format, the opportunities for professional growth offered by the Leadership Academy were too good to pass …

The Occupational Depression Inventory: A New Tool For Clinicians And Epidemiologists, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

Background: Depressive symptoms induced by insurmountable job stress and sick leave for mental health reasons have become a focal concern among occupational health specialists. The present study introduces the Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI), a measure designed to quantify the severity of work-attributed depressive symptoms and establish provisional diagnoses of job-ascribed depression. The ODI comprises nine symptom items and a subsidiary question assessing turnover intention. Methods: A total of 2254 employed individuals were recruited in the U.S., New Zealand, and France. We examined the psychometric and structural properties of the ODI as well as the nomological network of work-attributed depressive symptoms. …

Testing The Motivational Tradeoffs Between Pathogen Avoidance And Status Acquisition, Mitch Brown, Donald F. Sacco Oct 2020

Testing The Motivational Tradeoffs Between Pathogen Avoidance And Status Acquisition, Mitch Brown, Donald F. Sacco

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

To reduce disease transmission through interpersonal contact, humans have evolved a behavioral immune system that facilitates identification and avoidance of pathogens. One behavioral strategy in response to pathogenic threat is the adoption of interpersonal reticence. However, reticence may impede status acquisition. This program of research tested whether activating pathogen-avoidant motives through priming fosters reticence related to status, namely disinterest in pursuing a group leadership position (Study 1) or disinterest in accepting a group leadership position bestowed onto them (Study 2). Individuals high in germ aversion were particularly interested in pursuing leadership as a form of status, with disease salience unexpectedly …

Original Free Will Baptist Clergy Role Stress: A Definition And Its Emotional Consequences, Dustin R. Bannister Oct 2020

Original Free Will Baptist Clergy Role Stress: A Definition And Its Emotional Consequences, Dustin R. Bannister

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The role of a clergyperson is often understood as one that creates a connection between the human and the divine, faith and God. However, such a vast role is typically executed in specific ways, such as leading Bible studies, visiting the sick, leading worship, and the act of preaching. At times, such a role demands even more nuanced behaviors based upon the context, population, and time. As this study posited, the problem is that such a multiplicity of clergy expectations inevitably create role stress, as understood through the constructs of role ambiguity and role conflict. In particular, how one might …
