Assessing The Impact Of China's Fts's On Trade Creation And Trade Diversion, Bangchu Qiu
Assessing The Impact Of China's Fts's On Trade Creation And Trade Diversion, Bangchu Qiu
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This paper estimates trade creation and trade diversion effects of China's effective free trade agreements (FTAs) as of 2019. The annual trade data used in this study cover 32 economies with 25-year span (1995-2019). Using gravity type of model, trade creation and trade creation effects are estimated by applying ordinary least square (OLS) and Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PPML) techniques with various fixed effects. PPML is applied to deal with heteroscedasticity problem. The results show a pure trade creation effect of ACFTA and a pure trade contraction effect of CPFTA in the time fixed model. In the time & pair fixed …
Middle Class And Democratization Under Capital And Land Inequality: A Theoretical Approach, Wantiwa Mannaitham
Middle Class And Democratization Under Capital And Land Inequality: A Theoretical Approach, Wantiwa Mannaitham
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The study revisits the relationship between the middle class, transition to democracy and inequality. This paper uses mathematical methodology to represent the role of the middle class on democratization under capital and land inequality based on Acemoglu and Robinson 2006 models. This paper extends social class from two to three class models including the rich, the middle class and the poor. Moreover, the paper also describes how capital and land inequality affect democratization. To test an impact of the middle class on democratizing process under capital and land inequality conditions, this study divides into three cases; (1) capital and land …

Youths' Participation In Agriculture For Enhancing Sustainable Livelihoods: A Case Study Of Pa-O Self-Administered Zone In Southern Shan State, Myanmar, Khine Zin Yu Aung
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Myanmar in which 70 percent of the population is rural people relies on agricultural sector for its economy. It contributes about 37.8 percent of the country's GDP and employs about 50 percent of the labors (FAO, 2020). However, Myanmar's agricultural sector is not well developed and does not stand as reliable livelihood for the people, especially for the youths, in rural areas. Hence, the people in rural areas have to seek more livelihood opportunities like leaving their farmlands and moving to other places for work. This situation has impact both on youths and on the agricultural sector which needs youths' …

A Relentless War: America, Israel, And The Fight Against Terrorism, Elyse Keener
A Relentless War: America, Israel, And The Fight Against Terrorism, Elyse Keener
Senior Honors Theses
For Israel, terrorism has plagued the nation since its beginning. Terrorism rears its ugly head in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons; however, in both the United States and Israel, Islamic extremism has presented itself as the largest threat. Since its birth as a nation, the United States has been involved in numerous conflicts, from the Revolutionary War to World War II and beyond. These wars were fought between nation-states and traditional powers, but since the attacks on 9/11, the United States finds itself in a new kind of conflict against a different kind of enemy. …

Post-Supernatural Cultures: There And Back Again, Wesley J. Wildman, F. Leron Shults, Saikou Y. Diallo, Ross Gore, Justin Lane
VMASC Publications
The abandonment of supernatural religious beliefs and rituals seems to occur quite easily in some contexts, but post-supernaturalist cultures require a specific set of conditions that are difficult to produce and sustain on a large scale and thus are historically rare. Despite the worldwide resurgence of supernaturalist religion, some subcultures reliably produce people who deny the existence of supernatural entities. This social phenomenon has evoked competing explanations, many of which enjoy empirical support. We synthesize six of the most influential social-science explanations, demonstrating that they provide complementary perspectives on a complex causal architecture. We incorporate this theoretical synthesis into a …

Actions Speak Louder Than Resumes: How Performance-Based Interviews Facilitate Hiring The Best Library Candidates, Rebecca Tolley, Wendy Doucette
ETSU Faculty Works
This case study describes an academic library search committee's decision-making, practice, and assessment of using performance-based interviews as part of a national search for lecturer-level positions with a primary focus of reference and research services and minimal expectations of teaching information literacy in the classroom. The search committee determined performance-based interviews were successful in establishing candidates’ depth of skill in simulated reference transactions. The authors recommend incorporating an element of unscripted job simulation to employment interviews in libraries of all types.

A Metacognitive Triggering Mechanism For Anticipatory Thinking, Alexander R. Hough, Othalia Larue, Ion Juvina
Psychology Faculty Publications
Current autonomous systems have the ability to adapt to envi-ronmental changes in real-time, but limited ability to engage inanticipatory thinking (AT) with the flexibility to generalize andconsider hypothetical future situations. We argue that metacog-nitive processes are important for an and provide supporting lit-erature primarily from psychology. As an example, we presenta metacognitive monitoring mechanism implemented in a cog-nitive model and discuss ways to extend the mechanism to allowfor dynamic behavior and anticipatory thinking capabilities.
“I Do Not Feel I Am A Piece Of Property To Be Bought And Sold Irrespective Of My Wishes:” Athlete Activism And The Sociocultural Impact Of Curt Flood’S Lawsuit Against Major League Baseball, Luka Green
Pomona Senior Theses
In January 1970, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Curt Flood filed a suit against MLB Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, protesting the Reserve Clause in Major League Baseball that did not allow players the right to negotiate contract terms with any team but their current one. In doing so, he cemented his status as a divisive figure in baseball, the media, and with the general public. One of the primary reasons for such an extreme reaction was Flood’s rhetoric surrounding the case, as he repeatedly invoked slavery and other forms of peonage when describing the working conditions of professional baseball players. This sparked …

A License To Kill: The Institutional Failure Of The Legal System To Hold Police Accountable, Eliana R. Fleischer
A License To Kill: The Institutional Failure Of The Legal System To Hold Police Accountable, Eliana R. Fleischer
Honors Theses
In recent years, police shootings of unarmed African American men have become nationally visible. With few exceptions, the police officers involved in those shootings have escaped any criminal penalties. This paper addresses why so few police officers are convicted after shooting unarmed African Americans. Using an interdisciplinary approach, it addresses three aspects of the criminal justice system: prosecutorial power, Supreme Court case law, and jury bias. This paper argues that the legal system is structured to protect police officers from liability, making it unable to deliver justice after on-duty police shootings of unarmed African American men.
Gratitude, Resilience And Post-Traumatic Growth Among Kidney Transplant Recipients, Lillie Credle
Gratitude, Resilience And Post-Traumatic Growth Among Kidney Transplant Recipients, Lillie Credle
Honors Theses
Chronic health conditions, such as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), can produce detrimental physical, psychological, and emotional effects (Schulz & Kroencke, 2015). While transplantation helps to alleviate the physical symptoms, other psychosocial problems can remain. The present study sought to investigate whether organ transplant recipients utilize certain strength-based attributes—gratitude, resilience, and post-traumatic growth—when coping with life post-transplant. This mixed-methods study recruited eight (N=8) kidney transplant recipients, who took part in semi-structured interviews followed by a survey. Though quantitative data was limited due to COVID-19 interruptions, the qualitative data revealed evidence of gratitude, resilience, and post-traumatic growth being used by the participants …
Learning To Check Yourself: Improving Civic Engagement Through Duties, Better Voting Practices, And Combatting Group Loyalty, Katherine Brumund
Learning To Check Yourself: Improving Civic Engagement Through Duties, Better Voting Practices, And Combatting Group Loyalty, Katherine Brumund
Honors Theses
This project examines civic engagement. It is divided into three chapters: apathy, voting, and group loyalties. I derive two duties, a duty to care and a duty to reason well, that serve as a framework for community engagement aimed at facilitating moral progress. In the second section the main topic is voting. I argue for strategies to vote well. The third section of this project then focuses on group loyalties. This project uses two duties to frame how to engage with others, proposes a better way to participate civically, and ways to avoid pitfalls associated with group membership.

Associations Between Hookup Culture And Social Group, Ross Abrash
Honors Theses
Differences in hookup culture and behavior were examined across different social groups at the University of Richmond. Specifically, I examined the difference between Greek life members, varsity athletes, and the general student population. The sample consisted of 174 students (123 females, 51 males) from the University of Richmond. The sample was 33.3% Greek life, 25.9% varsity athletes, and 40.8% general student population. I distributed a web-based survey for participants to complete in a quiet place of their choosing. Fraternity members, sorority members, and male athletes scored higher than the comparison group on a measure of personal attitudes towards hooking up. …
The Effect Of President Trump’S Company-Specific Tweets On Company’S Stocks, Justin Kleczka
The Effect Of President Trump’S Company-Specific Tweets On Company’S Stocks, Justin Kleczka
Honors Theses
Implementing event-study analysis, I find that President Trump’s tweets about publicly traded companies cause daily abnormal returns of 0.25% in a company’s stock in the same direction as the sentiment of the tweet: positive tweets increase abnormal returns by 0.25% on the day’s end, while negative tweets will cause -0.25% abnormal returns.
Additionally, I find that President Trump’s company-specific tweets increase the daily abnormal trading volume and volatility of a company’s stock by 19%, regardless of tweet sentiment. For abnormal returns and abnormal trading volume, the effects of President Trump’s tweets do not last multiple days after a tweet. However, …

Profitability And Corporate Social Responsibility, Alexander Kirk
Honors Theses
This project examines the relationship between net margins and measures of corporate social responsibility for the companies in the S&P 500 index. This is conducted through linear regressions of overall, environmental, social, and governance scores on net margin percentages for firms from their annual 10-K reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The corporate social responsibility measures were taken from Sustainalytics via Yahoo Finance and combined with dummy variables for Global Industry Classification Standard sectors. Results indicate very limited role in corporate social responsibility measures for predicting net margins, instead favoring sector specific variables as driving net margins to …
Storytelling For Fundraising: Assessing The Impact Of Personal Stories On Donation Behavior, Kate A. Mccarthy
Storytelling For Fundraising: Assessing The Impact Of Personal Stories On Donation Behavior, Kate A. Mccarthy
Honors Theses
In fundraising, some nonprofits have sought to channel the power of personal stories by including them in appeal letters. Are stories an effective tool in soliciting donations? In this study, participants read one of three appeals from an unnamed abortion fund. Two conditions contained a personal story, either an “unapologetic” or a “uncontroversial” narrative, about a woman who underwent an abortion; one condition did not include a story. Participants were then asked questions regarding the appeal and the organization before being given a “bonus” dollar, and offered the option of donating a portion of that to an abortion fund. Results …

“Put Your Phone Down, And Say Hi!” Cultivating Positivity Resonance At Ur, Natalie Szumel
Honors Theses
The goal of this study is to advance our understanding of outcomes related to experiencing positivity resonance and additionally to examine the role of technology as a potential barrier to experiencing positivity resonance (PR). I expect to see positivity resonance associated with physical, psychological, and social well-being, while phone use will predict lower levels of positivity resonance.
This study is unique because it focuses on a college campus population and analyses how their well-being is affected by their social behaviors. This study is especially important for a campus like UR given how segregated and exclusive the student population has become, …

Internal Migration Of Foreign-Born In Us: Impacts Of Population Concentration And Risk Aversion, Thin Yee Mon Su
Honors Theses
Internal migration in the US has been declining since the 1990s and research has mostly focused on labor market dynamics and aging population to explain the migration trends. This paper analyzes migration patterns of foreign-born groups in the US from 2000 to 2019. Along with the migration determinants such as education and employment, the paper focuses on population concentration as a factor that shapes foreign-born decisions to relocate in the US. Population concertation is defined to be a measure of how geographically concentrated each foreign-born group is across the US. I find that the likelihood of migrating to another state …

Associations Of Neighborhood Socioeconomic Conditions With Self-Rated Health, Mental Distress, And Health Behaviors: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study In Japan, Tomoya Hanibuchi, Tomoki Nakaya
Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although associations between neighborhood socioeconomic conditions and health have been well established, their geographical scope is mostly limited to Western societies, while multilevel studies in the non-Western context (e.g., Japan) are limited to specific cities/regions within countries. This consequently limits the external validity of the findings. To fill the gap, this study examined the associations between neighborhood socioeconomic conditions and health-related indicators by using nationwide cross-sectional data in Japan. Individual data was collected from a nationwide online survey conducted in 2015 (n = 4593). Self-rated health, mental distress (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale: K6), smoking, and physical activity were analyzed in …
