Valuing Public Transport Customer Amenities: International Transit Agency Practice, Chris De Gruyter, Graham Currie Jan 2020

Valuing Public Transport Customer Amenities: International Transit Agency Practice, Chris De Gruyter, Graham Currie

Journal of Public Transportation

Public transport customer amenities cover a range of measures that can enhance the quality of the passenger experience, such as information provision and station quality. While much research has determined the value that users place on amenities, there is little understanding of current practice in the use of customer amenity valuations in project appraisal. A survey of transit agencies in 11 cities (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Auckland, London, Paris, Toronto, Vienna, Oslo and Singapore) was undertaken showing that Australasian cities, albeit Melbourne, generally have widespread inclusion of customer amenities as part of advanced appraisals for all relevant types of public …

Exploring Low-Carbon Bus Options For Urban Brt Systems: The Case Of Amman, Rana Imam, Seong-Cheol Kang, Diana Quezada Jan 2020

Exploring Low-Carbon Bus Options For Urban Brt Systems: The Case Of Amman, Rana Imam, Seong-Cheol Kang, Diana Quezada

Journal of Public Transportation

Being able to provide high-quality, metro-like transit service at a fraction of the cost of other options, bus rapid transit (BRT) has been viewed as one of the most cost-effective public mass transport systems suitable for urban areas. Considering significant amounts of greenhouse gas (GHG) and air pollutant emissions are attributed to the transport sector, deploying low carbon buses for BRT systems should be of high priority. With a view to promoting low carbon buses instead of diesel buses for a BRT system currently being planned in Amman, Jordan, this paper evaluates several low carbon bus options – hybrid, plug-in …

Sparks Of Service: The Fuel We Need To Fan The Flames Of Student Service-Learning And Effective Civic Engagement, Christian E. Tabet Jan 2020

Sparks Of Service: The Fuel We Need To Fan The Flames Of Student Service-Learning And Effective Civic Engagement, Christian E. Tabet

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Service-learning is a hybrid curriculum that puts students in direct contact with the needs of a community around them. Taking an experiential approach to learning, service-learning provides an outlet for students to take their education from within the classroom and apply it to a real-world setting. When developed successfully, service-learning challenges students to use the knowledge and skills they gained as a tool in tackling real world civic and social issues. To be successful, these programs must have a component that requires students to actively participate in community partnerships. Effective service-learning acts as a bridge between university and community—giving students …

Parenting From Prison: Perceptions Of Incarcerated Parents' Ability And Influence, Gabrielle Hadorn Jan 2020

Parenting From Prison: Perceptions Of Incarcerated Parents' Ability And Influence, Gabrielle Hadorn

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Incarcerated parents are at a substantially higher risk for losing their legal right to parent than the general public. This study assessed implicit perceptions and biases that may play a role in these legal decisions, specifically the perceptions of incarcerated parents’ ability to parent and influence their children’s lives. Court appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers’ (N = 242) perceptions of incarcerated parents based on the parents’ personal characteristics, characteristics of their children, and characteristics of their criminal activity were assessed through a true-experiment design. Ordinal regression analyses revealed that age of child, level of violence in the crime committed, and …

Using Law School Faculty Author Profiles To Promote Impact: The U.S. News & World Report Saga Continues, Allison N. Symulevich

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION: When U.S. News & World Report announced that it would rank law schools’ scholarly impact, U.S. News asked law schools to work with HeinOnline, a legal database, to ensure the accuracy of the database-created faculty author profiles because they would be using Hein’s database to gather citation metrics to measure scholarly impact. DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM: This practice article describes a project at UNC Chapel Hill in the law library to ensure that their faculty publications were included in HeinOnline’s database and that HeinOnline Author Profiles were accurate. This case study helps librarians tackling either similar law library projects or …

Academic Librarian Publishing Productivity: An Analysis Of Skills And Behaviors Leading To Success, Camielle Crampsie, Tina Neville, Deborah B. Henry Jan 2020

Academic Librarian Publishing Productivity: An Analysis Of Skills And Behaviors Leading To Success, Camielle Crampsie, Tina Neville, Deborah B. Henry

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Scholarly publishing continues to be a prominent expectation for many academic librarians. This survey explores characteristics, behaviors, motivations, institutional supports, and educational opportunities that help library practitioners become successful authors. It also looks at perceived confidence in research skills of both novice and experienced librarians. Many librarians show confidence in research activities related to their overall job assignments (literature searching, writing, and such) but find more sophisticated research skills, such as statistical analysis, more challenging. Findings indicate that having additional graduate research experience beyond the library degree, time-management skills, and collaboration with other researchers may provide useful benefits.

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Hiv Treatment And Research: A Call To Action, Tiffany Chenneville, Kemesha Gabbidon, Patricia Hanson, Cashea Holyfield

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is far reaching, with devastating effects on individuals, communities, and societies across the world. People with chronic health conditions may be at greater risk of contracting or experiencing complications from COVID-19. In addition to illness or death for those who contract the virus, the physical distancing required to flatten the curve of new cases is having a negative impact on the economy, the effects of which intersect with mental health and other existing health concerns, thus affecting marginalized communities. Given that HIV also has a disproportionate impact on marginalized communities, COVID-19 is affecting people …

Textbooks and Manuals Series

Part 107 is the subdivision of Subchapter F of Chapter 1 of Title 14 that pertains to small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). To legally fly a small unmanned aircraft for non-hobby, non-recreational use, remote pilots must abide by these regulations. This book is intended to explain the Part 107 regulations in a short and easy to read format. Additionally, this book also covers other areas of knowledge required by the FAA, including airspace and requirements, weather, loading and performance, and operations. Readers also have access to a series of sample test questions. Because the FAA does not provide specific test-questions …

"It’S Just A Bad Period" And Other Ways Of Dismissing Women's Pain: An Ethnographic Look Into The Experience Of Endometriosis, Selina Hays

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This thesis uses online ethnographic methods to analyze the impact of patriarchal values on the illness experiences of women with endometriosis. Current literature suggests that negative impact on patients with endometriosis with regard to cultural discourse surrounding menstruation and chronic illness. Utilizing a combination of critical discourse analysis and constructivist grounded theory, the results of this research demonstrate that patients engage in a form of performance that is reactive to normalization and dismissal of pain by doctors and wider social support due in part to cultural stigmas of menstruation and chronic pain, as well as the inherent power imbalance in …

Growing Up Puerto Rican: College Students' Reality Of Staying In Puerto Rico Post-Maria, Bianca M. Pizarro Vázquez Jan 2020

Growing Up Puerto Rican: College Students' Reality Of Staying In Puerto Rico Post-Maria, Bianca M. Pizarro Vázquez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Puerto Rico has been under influence and colonial rule by the United States since the Spanish-American War of 1898. This has led the island to have partial and limited control over the affairs inside it. The passing of Hurricane Maria on September 20th of 2017 exposed problems even further. Puerto Rico remains under the control of a Financial Oversight and Management Board since the passing of the PROMESA act (The Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act) signed by President Barack Obama in 2016. This had forced Puerto Rico to make drastic cuts to its public services. One …

Risk Preference Stability In The Aftermath Of Natural And Human-Influenced Catastrophes: A Meta-Analysis, James R. Bailey Jan 2020

Risk Preference Stability In The Aftermath Of Natural And Human-Influenced Catastrophes: A Meta-Analysis, James R. Bailey

Honors Undergraduate Theses

We estimate the impact of natural and human-influenced catastrophes on individual risk preferences. Using the meta-analysis process with random-effects models, we examine the significance of the effect of different catastrophes on individual risk preferences. As natural and human-influenced catastrophes have become more frequent a number of studies have evaluated their effects on risk attitudes. In this thesis a meta-analysis is performed from the results in these recent studies, allowing for comparisons across catastrophes and against results from laboratory experiments. In evaluating the change in risk-taking behavior amongst affected populations it may better inform relief efforts and policy decisions. Overall, subjects …

Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe Jan 2020

Anti-Lgbtq Hate: An Analysis Of Situational Variables, Jill Kehoe

Publications and Research

The current study aimed to augment the scant body of literature on anti-LGBTQ hate by providing an in-depth examination of anti-LGBTQ hate incident situational characteristics including offender substance use, number of offenders, crime location, and victim-offender relationship. Analysis of situational dynamic variables provided support for the notion that anti-LGBTQ hate is a distinct type of criminal incident. Significantly increased levels of offender substance use, crimes perpetrated by multiple offenders, crimes perpetrated by acquaintances, and crimes taking place in open spaces substantiates the theory that anti-LGBTQ hate is qualitatively unique, typified by different characteristics than other forms of crime. The data …

Servant-Leadership In Turbulent Times: A Conversation With Larry C. Spears, Jiying Song Jan 2020

Servant-Leadership In Turbulent Times: A Conversation With Larry C. Spears, Jiying Song

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The year of 2020 has been most challenging to many people all over the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has left almost no one’s life untouched. Robert Greenleaf’s best test says, “Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society; will they benefit, or at least, not be further deprived?” During this pandemic, the least privileged in society suffer the most, and various groups of vulnerable people have been marginalized, or pushed further into poverty. Is …

The Humility To Serve: Acknowledging A Fallible Spirit And Nurturing Growth, Nick Huge Jan 2020

The Humility To Serve: Acknowledging A Fallible Spirit And Nurturing Growth, Nick Huge

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Servant-leadership is a broad model that can be applied at many levels and in diverse seasons of one’s life. It is not only limited to an occupation but is relevant to our daily, more personal, social and familial interactions. It often seems that nurturing the less personal relationships with subordinates and co-workers comes more readily than those that are more deeply intimate. There is generally greater vulnerability required to humble oneself and be at the mercy of those who can most deeply wound us. For most, there is at least somewhat of an emotional distance to maintain with employees and …

Did Servant-Leadership Save The Lone Survivor? The Pashtunwali Ethos As A Foundation For The Practice Of Servant-Leadership, X. Jasmine Bordere, Franklin G. Mixon, Jr. Jan 2020

Did Servant-Leadership Save The Lone Survivor? The Pashtunwali Ethos As A Foundation For The Practice Of Servant-Leadership, X. Jasmine Bordere, Franklin G. Mixon, Jr.

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Servant-leadership is a unique leadership philosophy that, according to Greenleaf (1970, 1977), asserts that an effective leader must first be a servant whose primary goal is to serve the needs and interests of others. Stated differently, a servant-leader supports and develops those among his or her followership (Northouse, 2013). In fact, Stone, Russell, and Patterson (2004) suggest that its central focus on serving followers is what differentiates servant-leadership from other leadership styles. Additionally, servant-leaders express humility, authenticity, interpersonal acceptance and stewardship, and provide directions and empower followers, all of which ultimately leads to organizational success (Dierendonck & Nuijten, 2011; Northouse, …

Do Women Stand Back To Move Forward? Gender Differences In Top Us Business Leaders’ Messages Of Servant-Leadership, Kae Reynolds Jan 2020

Do Women Stand Back To Move Forward? Gender Differences In Top Us Business Leaders’ Messages Of Servant-Leadership, Kae Reynolds

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

The persistent absence of women in the upper echelons of management is an issue that continues to occupy the concern of governments, businesses, and leadership researchers. Despite a plethora of research to understand the reasons behind the persistent gender leadership gap, actual progress in practice remains minimal, with only 5.1% of Fortune1000 executives being women (Catalyst, 2016). One potential reason behind the perpetual systemic bias against women may be the rigid underlying androcentric philosophies of leading (Eicher-Catt, 2005; Morales, 2019). Servantleadership presents an alternative approach to concept of leading that is gender-integrative (Lehrke & Sowden, 2017; Reynolds, 2011; Reynolds, 2016).

Group Involvement: Cohesion & Tensions Through Collaboration, Edwin Hernandez

Communication Senior Capstones

The importance of teamwork and group involvement is essential not only in school to complete a common goal, but employers need to know that you have cooperation skills and the ability to collaborate with others in a diverse setting effectively. As my roommates and I arrived from different parts of California into a rural small county called Humboldt, we all came for the environment, but perhaps for distinctively altered reasons. We looked to develop improved relationships as well as group communication within the confines of our living space. Additionally, the goal was to maintain and manage a clean environment within …

What is popular culture and how does it influence us? How can we be more critically aware consumers of media messages? Are we always "online", or is there some way we can disconnect? These are the questions I've attempted to define through my research and experience studying contemporary "pop culture". Consider this a beginner’s guide on how to become aware of and deal with the constant bombardment of media messages, and how to become a filter for content, rather than a sponge. As critical consumers of media we can cater our consumption to better suit our needs and lifestyles. This …

Abstract

Sports hold such a dominant role in our society. They provide entertainment for individuals, job opportunities, and have a great impact on any given communities’ economy. However, we as the consumers and fans of the industry, tend to lack further examinations on the dynamics of the economic roles within sports. We sometimes become caught up in the glory of sports and never truly take the time to examine all of the money that goes into the industry. This paper will illustrate the ways in which the sports industry disburses their funds. From the cost of being a fan, to …

Pink Is The New Tax, Eliana Burns Jan 2020

Pink Is The New Tax, Eliana Burns

Communication Senior Capstones

Historically women in America have made colossal advances that have proven they are just as capable as men. Women had fought and continued to challenge the system since 1919 with the 19th Amendment giving them a right to vote. However, even with this crucial progression, womens’ oppression can be found all around us only in much more subtle ways such as “ the pink tax”. As of 2020 there are currently no federal laws to outlaw companies from charging different prices depending on which gender they are meant to be marketed to. This rhetorical analysis will first address the concept …

Multiple types of sharenting are examined such as; posts for family and friends to view, informational blogs and posts, punishment posts, and YouTube vlogging, or blogging in a video format. Vlogging is dissected by studying three different family vlog YouTube channels and the content that they create. The confidence and sense of self worth of children whose parents participate in …

Like A Virgin: Comparing Cross-Cultural Virginity, Anastasia M. Tejada

Communication Senior Capstones

Studies have been conducted about the social construct of virginity inside the United States and cross-culturally. Investigations comparing the United States with these other cultures are limited and focus on the United States as the ideal representation of virginity in men and women. I aim to expand upon the current research provided by adding a new perspective to the analysis. The objective of conducting this analysis is to provide a global perspective defining the connotations of virginity cross-culturally. This study focused on the cultural, religious, and societal impacts on virginity collected through qualitative methods in the cultures of Arab-Americans, Latinx-Americans, …
