Developing A Framework For Understanding The Personal Motivations Of Sustainability Leaders, Jennifer Licad Horn, Walter Wehrmeyer Jan 2020

Developing A Framework For Understanding The Personal Motivations Of Sustainability Leaders, Jennifer Licad Horn, Walter Wehrmeyer

Leadership and Strategy Faculty Publications

This study explores the initial and sustaining motivations that drive leaders to pursue sustainability as a profession or vocation. Exploratory interviews were conducted with 16 sustainability leaders in the Philippines working in sectors ranging from corporate to social enterprise, NGO, and academia. Findings from thematic analysis reveal significant life experiences that drive initial motivation, how feedback sustains motivation, and the importance of self-awareness and positive psychological factors in starting and sustaining their work or advocacy. A framework for understanding motivations is developed therein, drawing on themes extracted from the interviews, Stern’s Value-Belief-Norm Theory, and Authentic and Transformational Leadership theories. Recommendations …

Library Staffing Patterns - Function- Or Subject-Focused?, Julia K. Nims Jan 2020

Library Staffing Patterns - Function- Or Subject-Focused?, Julia K. Nims

Faculty Scholarship - University Library

Academic libraries are organized to provide the best possible services given inevitable constraints, such as budgets, available personnel, and space. Recent literature on academic library restructuring has argued that libraries should reorganize their public services along functional lines, and eliminate the traditional, subject-based structure. Proponents of the ‘‘functional specialist’’ structure contend that it allows libraries to be more agile in meeting researcher needs and aligning with institutional priorities. Advocates of the ‘‘subject librarian’’ organization assert that the disciplinary knowledge and close relationships with academic departments engendered with the ‘‘subject librarian’’ approach outweigh the benefits of the functional structure. While several …

Online Collaboration Platforms: Communication Implications For Workplace Virtual Teams, Anthony J. Paz Jan 2020

Online Collaboration Platforms: Communication Implications For Workplace Virtual Teams, Anthony J. Paz

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

As more organizations face the growing need to accommodate employees who are unable to work in a traditional face-to-face office environment, many turn to new computer programs that can connect all employees. These programs, generally referred to as online collaboration platforms, help to connect members of an organization while enhancing productivity and allowing work to be completed from around the world. While there is extensive research on the structure and nature of communication within virtual teams, there has been little research on the implications of online collaboration platforms on virtual teams. This study demonstrates how employees work with one another …

Can Normative Influences Ease The Effects Of Social Exclusion?, Autumn Chall

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Being socially excluded has negative effects on a person’s well-being, both mentally and physically. Few studies have succeeded in finding a way to lessen these negative effects. Previous research in other domains have found that positive role models can help people to feel better about themselves and their situations. This study investigates the idea that role models could buffer the negative effects of social exclusion. Fifty-seven participants were either socially excluded, or, in the case of the control condition, included. Then participants were exposed to no essay, a neutral essay, or a role-model essay. Results showed that the role model …

Exploring The Social Implications Of Freedom Of Speech On The Internet, Gwenyth Andrusiak Jan 2020

Exploring The Social Implications Of Freedom Of Speech On The Internet, Gwenyth Andrusiak

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Freedom of speech is one of the most basic rights given to citizens of the United States. Over the years, courts have defined what is considered speech and what speech and forms of expression are protected and from whom. These definitions have evolved with each new form of media, from print to radio to television, however the Internet has presented a unique challenge to regulate given its international nature. Using the legal definitions of protected and unprotected speech, this paper will explore the different perceptions of freedom of speech online and offline, how these definitions have evolved to encompass the …

College Choice And African American Males: A Case Study Exploring The Intersection Of Family, School, And Society On The College Choice Decision-Making Process, W. Samino Scott Ii Jan 2020

College Choice And African American Males: A Case Study Exploring The Intersection Of Family, School, And Society On The College Choice Decision-Making Process, W. Samino Scott Ii

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that influence the college choice decisions of African American male first-generation college students. This study employed a strength-based approach, instead of the more traditional narrative centered around values, cultural norms, and deficits. This research study utilized a single-case study design and a qualitative research methodology. The study examined the college choice influences experienced by five African American males attending a mid-sized college in the Midwest to develop a more nuanced understanding of the strengths they exhibited that allow them to successfully navigate impoverished conditions at home, in the neighborhood, and …

Judging Risk, Brandon L. Garrett, John Monahan Jan 2020

Judging Risk, Brandon L. Garrett, John Monahan

Faculty Scholarship

Risk assessment plays an increasingly pervasive role in criminal justice in the United States at all stages of the process, from policing, to pre-trial, sentencing, corrections, and during parole. As efforts to reduce incarceration have led to adoption of risk-assessment tools, critics have begun to ask whether various instruments in use are valid and whether they might reinforce rather than reduce bias in criminal justice outcomes. Such work has neglected how decisionmakers use risk-assessment in practice. In this Article, we examine in detail the judging of risk assessment and we study why decisionmakers so often fail to consistently use such …

The Costs And Benefits Of Forensics, Brandon L. Garrett Jan 2020

The Costs And Benefits Of Forensics, Brandon L. Garrett

Faculty Scholarship

Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis famously wrote that states can be laboratories for experimentation in law and policy. Disappointingly, however, the actual laboratories that states and local governments run are not a home for experimentation. We do not have adequate information about either the costs or the benefits of forensic testing or allocation of resources. Increased spending and expansion of crime laboratories has perversely accompanied growing backlogs. Poor quality control has resulted in a series of audits and even closures of crime laboratories. In response to these problems, however, some laboratories and some entire states have developed new approaches toward …

Special Education By Zip Code: Creating Equitable Child Find Policies, Crystal Grant

Faculty Scholarship

It is estimated that more than 1.3 million youth in the United States have a disability. One in four American adults have a disability that impacts major life activities. With disability rates this high, our nation must prioritize efforts to ensure that all children with disabilities and in need of special education are identified and receive the support they need in school. Congress, through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), mandated that all public schools locate, identify and evaluate all students suspected of having a disability. The special education community refers to this affirmative duty as “child find.” Unfortunately, …

Wage-Productivity Analysis Of U.S. Domestic Airlines, Jesse Lucas, Khairul Azuar, Justin Tan, Syed Ilyas Jan 2020

Wage-Productivity Analysis Of U.S. Domestic Airlines, Jesse Lucas, Khairul Azuar, Justin Tan, Syed Ilyas

Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202

This study examines the impact of wages on productivity by examining US domestic airlines.

Current literature places emphasis on jobs conducted in-flight, specifically pilots and cabin crew. This paper considers all job titles involved in the operations of the airline, including executives and management. Existing research focuses on factors such as governance, domestic economic level, and personal attributes such as intrinsic motivation, gender, and age. There is insufficient research regarding the relationship between wage and productivity. Thus, it is uncertain if high wage leads to high productivity. Preliminary findings suggest higher wage equates to higher productivity.

Hegemony Versus Pluralism: Ayurveda And The Movement For Global Mental Health, Murphy Halliburton Jan 2020

Hegemony Versus Pluralism: Ayurveda And The Movement For Global Mental Health, Murphy Halliburton

Publications and Research

Under the aegis of the World Health Organization, the Movement for Global Mental Health and an Indian Supreme Court ruling, biomedical psychiatric interventions have expanded in India augmenting biomedical hegemony in a place that is known for its variety of healing modalities. This is occurring despite the fact that studies by the WHO show a better outcome in India for people suffering schizophrenia and related diagnoses when compared to people in developed countries who have greater access to biomedical psychiatry. Practitioners of ayurvedic medicine in Kerala have been mounting a claim for a significant role in public mental health in …

The Adolescent Peer System And Academic Engagement, Carrie Jeanne Furrer, Gwen Catherine Marchand Jan 2020

The Adolescent Peer System And Academic Engagement, Carrie Jeanne Furrer, Gwen Catherine Marchand

Center for Improvement of Child and Family Services Publications

Peers are central in shaping adolescents’ development across various domains. This research examined patterns of peer system resources and liabilities, and their association with academic adjustment. A person-centred approach, Latent Profile Analysis, was used to classify students into groups based on characteristics of the peer system: friendship quality, group, and general peer relations. Participants were 443 students in their ninth grade year, 14.7 years old on average, and 57% female. Peer system characteristics formed four profiles. The most common profile had high resources and low liabilities; the three other profiles were mixtures of moderate/high resources and low/moderate liabilities. Students with …

Perceived Overqualification And Task Performance:Reconciling Two Opposing Pathways, Allen Lee, Berrin Erdogan, Amy Tian, Sara Willis, Jie Cao

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this study, we predict that higher levels of relative deprivation and higher levels of task mastery constitute two pathways through which perceived overqualification (POQ) has indirect and opposing effects on task performance. Further, we predict that occupational instrumentality, the degree to which the individual regards their job as a stepping tone to future career opportunities, will serve as a moderator for both pathways. Across two studies, as well as a supplementary study, we found evidence that POQ is positively associated with followers’ perceptions of both task mastery and relative deprivation. In both studies, we also found consistent evidence for …

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objectives: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was found to trigger the higher risk of dementia. Limited information, however, is available on whether the use of rehabilitation services (RS), an integral part of healthcare programs, can lessen dementia risk for RA subjects. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of RS use to the development of dementia in RA patients.

Methods: We identified 2,927 newly diagnosed patients with RA, 20–70 years of age between 1998 and 2007, from a national health insurance database. 965 patients from this sample received RS, and 1,962 patients were designated as a control group (non-RS …

Touring The Lilly Library, Kimberly Mattioli Jan 2020

Touring The Lilly Library, Kimberly Mattioli

Articles by Maurer Faculty

When I began my job in January 2015, I was the first person to be officially designated as the Student Services Librarian at Indiana University Maurer School of Law’s Jerome Hall Law Library. One could argue that almost all the functions of a librarian at an academic law library are indeed “student services,” but I was given the exciting, and at times overwhelming, task of making the students happy on a full-time basis.

What makes students happy? Does anything (short of free food) make law students excited about the law library? I took it as a personal challenge to find …

Are We Represented As Who We Are? An Assessment Of Library Faculty Online Profiles Within The City University Of New York, Junli Diao

Publications and Research

Academic librarians have been wrestling with faculty status and rank for many decades and their dual identities as professionals and faculty made their identity representations in the online profile environment designed by colleges and universities even more complicated. Misrepresentation or insufficient representation of academic librarians’ identities could lead to jeopardy of their public images within colleges and universities, or even trigger suspicion that academic librarians bring an impediment to academic standards by achieving less or none. Therefore, this study surveyed library faculty’s online profiles within the libraries of the City University of New York and tried to assess whether library …

Perceptions, Attitudes, Self-Efficacy, And Behaviors Of Mouthguard Use Among Collegiate Athletes, Heather Prosser

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

With the high risk of dental trauma in contact sports, it is important that all athletes have a strong foundation of how to prevent such injuries. Properly fitted mouthguards are the best available protective equipment to prevent orofacial trauma; however, previous research has found them underutilized, with the need for evidence-based interventions to promote mouthguard use among athletes. This study used a descriptive, cross-sectional, correlational research design, focusing on studying collegiate athletes at one large, Midwestern university, to determine their current attitudes, perceptions, self-efficacy, and behaviors of mouthguard use during participation in a contact sport. A convenience sampling technique was …
