The Effects Of Misrepresentation (2020-2021), Miranda R. Cobo Jan 2020

The Effects Of Misrepresentation (2020-2021), Miranda R. Cobo

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

This example of a research inquiry investigates issues of representation in the comic, Black Panther. Cobo writes: “In the 1960s, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced T’Challa, famously known as the Black Panther. He was the first black superhero to be introduced in the Marvel Universe and into popular American comics. The world that Black Panther lived in is very advanced and breaks the stereotype of the view that many Americans have on Africa. However, that is only one stereotype that it has worked against. There have been many other stereotypes that writers use in T’Challa’s storyline that can be …

Child Protection Services: The Developmental Consequences Of Arbitrary Removal (2020-2021), John Jackson Jan 2020

Child Protection Services: The Developmental Consequences Of Arbitrary Removal (2020-2021), John Jackson

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

This research inquiry example details the developmental consequences for children removed from their biological homes by Children’s Services. Jackson uses sources to discuss physical, mental, and emotional implications for removing children from their homes or parents in their future development as both children and adults. Not only does Jackson present an alternative perspective thinking about negative consequences and how the process of removal puts parents at odds with regaining custody, but he also proposes an alternative solution in the conclusion.

The Medical Ethics Of Hela Cells (2020-2021), Elizabeth Pratt Jan 2020

The Medical Ethics Of Hela Cells (2020-2021), Elizabeth Pratt

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

Pratt’s research inquiry essay focuses on the medical ethics issues involved in the case of Henrietta Lacks and her cancer cells (known as HeLa,) which have been used and reused in medical research without hers or her family’s consent. Throughout this essay, Pratt moves between several areas for concern including medical agency and patients’ rights to their own bodies, financial implications, legal definitions, and issues for privacy. Pratt concludes with a call for future regulations and focus on medical ethics.

The Doppelganger Effect (2020-2021), Jessica Jean-Baptiste Jan 2020

The Doppelganger Effect (2020-2021), Jessica Jean-Baptiste

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

In this example of a research inquiry, Jean-Baptiste focuses on the use of cameras and mirrors to create doubles, or “doppelgangers” for the character of Nina in the film, Black Swan. In thinking about the “doppelganger effect,” Jean-Baptiste moves through an argument for how doubling fulfills not only one purpose or message within the film, but three. Her claim in synthesizing multiple sources of film analysis is that the doppelganger allows Aronofsky to comment on mental disorders, sexism within the community of ballet, and the overall mood for the film as a thriller as opposed to only a drama.

Illegitimate Control: An Acknowledgement Of False White Supremacy (2020-2021), Whitman Ives Jan 2020

Illegitimate Control: An Acknowledgement Of False White Supremacy (2020-2021), Whitman Ives

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

This research inquiry introduces a timely conversation on racism, cultural appropriation, and white supremacy. Ives’ argument is that the root cause of cultural appropriation and racism can be traced to a negative and false history of white supremacy. In other words, white culture has been founded and perpetuated based on power-seeking behavior, of which racism is more a symptom. Ives asserts that it is important to acknowledge that white culture is based on false assumptions of supremacy and to address that more systematically rather than addressing only individual events or instances of racism.

Stand By Me As My Words Write The Way (2020-2021), Gianna Wheeler Jan 2020

Stand By Me As My Words Write The Way (2020-2021), Gianna Wheeler

CPN 101: Remix

In this example of a remix assignment, Wheeler uses poetry as a means to translate her research inquiry project into a new form for a new audience and purpose. She remixes aspects of her film analysis of Stand By Me with a reimagined focus on her research process. Wheeler considers aspects such as source selection, revision, and incorporating feedback into the final research inquiry paper. Throughout the poem, “Stand By Me” is both the title of the film on which Wheeler is conducting research and also a repeated phrase marking the progress that she makes through various stages in …

My Quest For Confidence (2020 - 2021), Tai Tran Jan 2020

My Quest For Confidence (2020 - 2021), Tai Tran

Critical Evaluation

In this critical evaluation Tran discusses the need for confidence in writing and not simply relying on summarizing or explaining sources, but connecting back to one’s main argument and extending, commenting on, or even critiquing those sources. Along with the narrative essay that Tran provides, there is also a list of “author notes” or a cover letter that accompanies the main essay. This first list of eight points helps to frame the reader’s understanding of the critical evaluation essay.

Potential Applications Of Microrna Profiling To Forensic Investigations, Claire L. Glynn Jan 2020

Potential Applications Of Microrna Profiling To Forensic Investigations, Claire L. Glynn

Forensic Science Publications

Within the forensic science community, there is a continued push to develop novel tools to aid in criminal investigations. microRNA (miRNA) analysis has been the focus of many researcher’s attention in the biomedical field since its discovery in 1993; however, the forensic application of miRNA analysis has only been suggested within the last 10 years and has been gaining considerable traction recently. The primary focus of the forensic application of miRNA analysis has been on body fluid identification to provide confirmatory universal analysis of unknown biological stains obtained from crime scenes or evidence items. There are, however, other forensic applications …

Designing Student Projects In Finance: Structure, Technology, And Assessment, Jack W. Trifts, Laura Kohl

Finance Department Faculty Journal Articles

Student projects are a typical part of finance courses, but little has been written about their design. This article describes a five-year process of developing a web-based, semester-long, project in financial statement analysis and provides a road map for faculty members seeking to enhance learning. A key for any instructor is how to manage the trade off the benefits of individual projects and significant formative feedback with the time demands involved.

The Broad Scope And Variation Of Monetary Sanctions: Evidence From Eight States, Sarah Shannon, Beth Huebner, Alexes Harris, Karin Martin, Mary Patillo, Becky Pettit, Bryan Sykes, Christopher Uggen

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Works

Monetary sanctions have long been a part of the U.S. criminal justice system but have received increasing attention from the public as well as legal scholars and social science research in recent years. This essay describes initial findings from the Multi-State Study of Monetary Sanctions, a multi-method study designed to build on the prior research on legal financial obligations (LFOs) by examining the multi-tiered systems of monetary sanctions operating within eight states representing key regions of the United States (California, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Texas and Washington). Our research explores the constantly changing legal environment and documents how …

A Call To Change: Rebuilding Relationships And Addressing Injustice, Brittany Pickard, Kailee Jenness, Lexi Van Surksum, Tori Conner

Student Projects

The goal of this community project was to initiate conversation and bring awareness to the gap between the local Orange City Police Department and persons of color. Through research, the organizers recognized a need for relationship rebuilding in Orange City, Iowa, and strived to do this through the means of community participation. The organizers have collected stories from community members and worked to represent individuals who have been underrepresented. Through this process, the organizers created a petition to provide tangible proof for the police department that members within the community strive to rebuild relationships and address racial injustice.

University Of Alabama At Birmingham Libraries’ Website Design And Launch, Jeff Graveline, Kara Van Abel Jan 2020

University Of Alabama At Birmingham Libraries’ Website Design And Launch, Jeff Graveline, Kara Van Abel

Libraries Professional Work

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Libraries merged into a unified entity, launching a single website in 2017. This consolidation improved usability, reduced maintenance costs, and streamlined services for nearly 20,000 students and 2,600 faculty. Usability testing showed the new site enhanced access to library resources and information.

The UAB Libraries website merger succeeded due to strong administrative support, collaboration, and external expertise, though it revealed key areas for improvement: better communication and time management. While the merger preserved individual library identities, Kotter's change framework highlighted missed opportunities in empowering staff and fostering smoother transitions.

Diversity, Inclusion, And Social Justice In Library Technical Services, Rhonda Kauffman, Martina S. Anderson

Published Works

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries recently embraced a large-scale initiative to incorporate the values of diversity, inclusion, and social justice (DISJ) into library practices. In early 2017, the MIT collections directorate task force on DISJ released a report with recommendations for embedding DISJ values into the daily work of archives, technical services, preservation, scholarly communications, and collections strategy staff. This chapter focuses on the challenges and opportunities in undertaking a sustained effort to achieve DISJ specifically within technical services. The authors highlight how technical services staff can use their unique position within libraries to dismantle existing structures of …

Leadership, Development, And Expertise: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Scholarly Communication Librarian Position Announcements, Angela Hackstadt Jan 2020

Leadership, Development, And Expertise: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Scholarly Communication Librarian Position Announcements, Angela Hackstadt

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

In 2012, the Association of Research Libraries reported that 95% of libraries identified their libraries as leaders of scholarly communication efforts on campus. While academic librarians have long been responsible for SC issues, institutions have explicitly tasked positions with these responsibilities increasingly over time. This qualitative analysis of position announcements focuses on the ways libraries expect these librarians to engage with SC issues and responsibilities, rather than describing the prevalence of SC-related functions. Specifically, this study asks the following questions: (1) How do administrators communicate leadership expectations of SC librarian roles through job advertisements? (2) In what ways could these …

The Monument Of Memories As A Place/Space Of Multifarious Rhetorical Action, Meagan K. Winkleseth Jan 2020

The Monument Of Memories As A Place/Space Of Multifarious Rhetorical Action, Meagan K. Winkleseth

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The number of people living with some form of dementia globally is growing. The absence of a cure, combined with this rapidly increasing presence of dementia, has directed attention away from fostering an understanding of the disease as it is socially experienced and toward the intricacies of determining its neurological properties. This study analyzes the Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County’s Monument of Memories as a cultural form with the potential to (re)frame how the experience of dementia is socially conceptualized in Windsor, Ontario, and beyond. Specifically, I employ theoretical and methodological insights from participatory critical rhetoric, postmodern architectural …

Affirmation And Reaction: Towards A Critical Biosemiotic Sociology, Benjamin Dreyer Jan 2020

Affirmation And Reaction: Towards A Critical Biosemiotic Sociology, Benjamin Dreyer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Does our physicality influence society? If it does then what meaning can be derived from that relationship? What follows is an analysis of theory which strives to develop a conceptualization of reality and society which incorporates both a radical social constructivism with the assumption or “givenness” of external reality. The works being drawn upon are predominately associated with phenomenological sociology, systems theory, and semiotics but additional works from philosophy and political science are considered. The result of this venture is the conclusion that affirmation, the proof of the reaction, is the foundation of society. From this conclusion follows the postulation …

Support For Screening And Intervening On Adolescent Depression: Provider-Reported Training Outcomes, Leah Rose Lalonde Jan 2020

Support For Screening And Intervening On Adolescent Depression: Provider-Reported Training Outcomes, Leah Rose Lalonde

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Given the potential consequences of untreated adolescent depression and the prevalence of untreated mental health among adolescents, the American Academy of Pediatrics has strongly recommended active support and monitoring of depressive symptoms in pediatric primary care. Primary care providers (PCPs), however, do not have sufficient training to provide this level of care, contributing to low rates of identification and management of depression. The purpose of the current pilot study was to evaluate a training aimed at supporting providers in the management of adolescent depression. Results demonstrated that providers were accepting of the training and that provider knowledge of depression management …

Shah Rukh Khan: Journey From Charisma To Celebrity, Priya Kapoor Jan 2020

Shah Rukh Khan: Journey From Charisma To Celebrity, Priya Kapoor

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Chapter 3. This essay studies the particular brand of Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) as he achieves superstardom in the Hindi film industry and as a thought leader, earn ing him the moniker Badshah (king). By transcending ossifying gender roles and ethnic-religious divisions might SRK be the quintessential Indian man who stands for the nation (Cayla in Advertising Soc Rev 9(2), 2008)? Or is he a modern metro sexual whose identity is hybrid? This accounts for the dialectical tension that arises from the ‘celebrity’ of SRK as global businesses boldly recruit cinephile audiences as consumer-patriots of neoliberal India transforming dated identities …
