University and community collaborations have great potential to develop culturally adapted evidence- based interventions. However, little guidance is available on effective approaches for creating and implementing such partnerships specifically to culturally adapt interventions. The purpose of this paper is to introduce Community Collaborative Cultural Adaptation (CCCA), an approach for engaging community members as partners in the cultural adaptation of an evidence based intervention. The Economics Of Skin Tone In Nineteenth-Century Maryland, Yuree Kim

Theses and Dissertations

I analyze the effect of subtle differences in skin complexion on heights of free blacks in Maryland during the nineteenth century. I propose that lighter-skinned blacks were taller (indicating better nutrition) than their darker counterparts. I find the hypothesis holds - 15.9% taller for males and 16.5% taller for females.

The Exceptional Negro: Racism, White Privilege And The Lie Of Respectability Politics, Traci Ellis

Publications & Research

Overwhelmingly, black folks have close encounters on a regular basis with being marginalized, insulted, dismissed and discriminated against. It is the natural consequence of still being considered little more than a Negro in this country. Especially for the “Exceptional Negroes.” But, as we will see, the truth is that even with our exceptionalism, we are still just “Negroes” to white America and in case we forget that, they will swiftly remind us.

A Longitudinal Analysis Of The Impact Of Child Custody Loss On Drug Use And Crime Among A Sample Of African American Mothers, Kathi L. H. Harp, Carrie B. Oser

Health Management and Policy Faculty Publications

This study examines the influence of child custody loss on drug use and crime among a sample of African American mothers. Two types of custody loss are examined: informal custody loss (child living apart from mother but courts not involved), and official loss (child removed from mother’s care by authorities).

Methods—Using data from 339 African American women, longitudinal random coefficient models analyzed the effects of each type of custody loss on subsequent drug use and crime.

Results—Results indicated that both informal and official custody loss predicted increased drug use, and informal loss predicted increased criminal involvement. Findings demonstrate …

Investment Behavior: Factors That Limit African Americans' Investment Behavior, Crystal Hudson, John Young, Sophia Anong, Elania Hudson, Edward Davis

Journal of Financial Therapy

This study investigated factors that are likely to limit African Americans’ investment activity in the stock market by triangulating data from the 2015 FINRA Financial Capacity Study and a Financial Behavior/Capacity survey that targeted African Americans. The financial survey revealed the top self-reported reasons these African Americans gave for not investing which were, “I don't understand how the stock market works”, “I don't make enough money” and “I don’t want to lose my money". Logistic regression results for the FINRA African American sample indicate that those with more financial knowledge, those who participated in financial education, and those who were …
