"Do Not Fashion The Other": Representing Contemporary Haudenosaunee Literature 2016, Michael Patrick Brewster May 2016

"Do Not Fashion The Other": Representing Contemporary Haudenosaunee Literature 2016, Michael Patrick Brewster

Master's Theses

Historically, the issue of representation in postcolonial studies is one of some contention. While scholarship might recognize the necessity for highlighting the plights and struggles attendant to postcolonial societies, the primary literature being studied is most often written by natives of those societies themselves. This gap is especially evident with Indigenous cultures, because there are relatively few Indigenous scholars working in the academy. We are at the point now when we have a multiplicity (but not a plurality) of Indigenous voices writing literature (poetry, memoir, fiction, film, etc.) and academic criticism. However, there is value in non-Natives reading and writing …

The Effects Of Whole Body High-Intensity Interval Training On Collegiate Female Soccer Players 2016, Whitney Frary

Master's Theses

Soccer is considered a high intensity sport that requires a high level of both aerobic and anaerobic fitness. A whole body high-intensity interval training adaptation has been shown to benefit both of these systems over a short period of time. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a five week whole-body high intensity interval training program on female collegiate soccer players performance in speed, acceleration, agility, vertical jump, aerobic capacity, physical self perception, and physical enjoyment. Participants were from the SUNY Cortland women’s soccer team who participated in a five- week training protocol three days a …

Adopting New Banana Varieties In Uganda: The Role Of Gender And Head Of Household Status, Emily Albertson May 2016

Adopting New Banana Varieties In Uganda: The Role Of Gender And Head Of Household Status, Emily Albertson

Sustainability and Social Justice

Recognizing the gender gap that exists in the adoption rates of improved agricultural technology is crucial in increasing agricultural productivity in Sub-Saharan Africa. A gender-disaggregated framework is used to examine key variables that guide the adoption decision of improved agricultural technologies by gender and household headship. Drawing on household data collected in two districts in Uganda and constructing a probability model, key variables will be analyzed as to their significance in the adoption decision for improved banana cultivars. The analysis shows that gender alone is insufficient in fully understanding adoption decisions, as other significant factors exist. Using the literature and …

The Shape Of Youth Work To Come: City Year's Approach To Youth Worker Development, Jeremy M. Joseph May 2016

The Shape Of Youth Work To Come: City Year's Approach To Youth Worker Development, Jeremy M. Joseph

Sustainability and Social Justice

The concept of youth work as a profession is slowly gaining legitimacy in the United States and features varying approaches. In order to maintain the growth of the field, youth worker training programs must be examined through the lens of a theoretical framework to better understand best practices and ways in which the youth are impacted by the services. I have chosen to use the case of the non-profit organization, City Year to highlight ways in which young leaders from varying backgrounds are introduced to the field of youth work. Through this study I have found that City Year is …

Sustainability and Social Justice

This report has been generated for Worcester Common Ground, Inc., (WCG) Community Development Corporation to support their vision of transforming a formerly vacant parcel of land into a community bioshelter. A bioshelter is a specialized greenhouse, powered by passive energy (solar, wind, rainwater), that is capable of year-round food production. This research is rooted within a conceptual framework of urban agriculture, ecological design and community development. Approximately twenty-five interviews were conducted with a range of stakeholders in order to determine community needs, potential uses and feasibility for a bioshelter. The first section of findings of this report highlights shared themes …

The Hartford Food System: A Review Of Assets, Challenges, And Opportunities, Zachary A. Fromson May 2016

The Hartford Food System: A Review Of Assets, Challenges, And Opportunities, Zachary A. Fromson

Sustainability and Social Justice

Abstract

Healthy food systems hold potential to improve a city’s social, health, and economic well-being. Currently, there is a worldwide trend in refocusing food systems to invest in the local community rather than relying on hyper-industrial food value chains that erect barriers for local residents in a city’s food sector. It is the purpose of this report to assess how Hartford’s food sector currently is working so that the city may move in a more innovative direction with its food sector, improving the social, health, and economic conditions for the city and its residents. Thus, this report examines Hartford’s food …

Somewhere “I Can Live”: Youths’ Conceptualizations Of Nature And The Outdoors In Worcester, Ma, Sarah Bertrand

Sustainability and Social Justice

This paper describes the methodology, findings, and implications of research project attempting to understand youths’ conceptualizations of nature and the outdoors. Drawing on and responding to literature that calls for the prioritization of youths’ voices and describes nature as a constructed concept, I interviewed five youth residents of Worcester, Massachusetts, a mid-size city in New England. Using discourse analysis, I also attempt to understand what influences these youths’ conceptualizations of nature and the outdoors. The youth expressed nuanced and complex ideas about nature and the outdoors, situating these ideas within broader conceptualizations of the environment. They also suggested that these …

A Complement, Not A Competitor: How Public Markets Can Support Business Districts In Worcester, Ron M. Barron May 2016

A Complement, Not A Competitor: How Public Markets Can Support Business Districts In Worcester, Ron M. Barron

Sustainability and Social Justice

The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible economic and community development impacts of entry-level public markets (e.g. fixed location markets, farmers markets, etc.) on the communities in which they operate. While there is extensive literature around their benefits to vendors, community health and public space, there is comparative little on the interplay between these markets and more traditional brick and mortar businesses. The background and definition of these markets, the basic common characteristics that define them, and some of the benefits they can offer for economic and community development are each explored. It then examines two different …

Social Entrepreneurship As A Response To The Energy Crisis, Climate Change And Women’S Inequality In Developing Countries: Women Managed Solar Cooker Production Business In Rural Haiti, Lelani S. Williams

Sustainability and Social Justice

In developing countries such as Haiti, households heavily rely on charcoal and wood to satisfy their energy needs. The unsustainable use of these fuels accompanies adverse health and women's inequality impacts. As well as have severely altered Haiti’s environmental landscape. Solar cooking is one clean energy alternative to these issues. Despite its multiple benefits; solar cookers have had little traction in developing countries. Most research is focused only on technical improvements of solar cookers. This paper looks at how the utilization of solar cookers can positively impact the problems facing Haiti due to traditional cooking methods (1) environmental, (2) energy …

The Effects Of Stress On False Memory, Claire Van Vranken May 2016

The Effects Of Stress On False Memory, Claire Van Vranken

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study looks at the impact of stress on the creation of these false memories, using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm (DRM). A false memory is a memory of an event that never really occurred, but is believed that it occurred by the person remembering it. In a typical DRM study, participants are given a list of words that fall under the same category. When the participants are later asked to recall the words on the list, 40% of the participants recall a word that was not on the list with a high rate of confidence (Roediger & McDermott, 1995). Stress has …

Correlation Between A Students’ Academic Performance And Caffeine Intake, Mary Bindbeutel May 2016

Correlation Between A Students’ Academic Performance And Caffeine Intake, Mary Bindbeutel

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

On most college campuses around the country, one would find it difficult not to run into a coffee cart or a vending machine chock-full of caffeinated beverages. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there is a correlation between a student’s academic performance and their daily intake of caffeine. I hypothesized that there would be a negative correlation between these variables. That is, I predicted those who reported low levels of caffeine intake would have higher levels of academic performance. This study consisted of 17 participants who were surveyed over their daily caffeine intake and their …

The Relationship Between Emotional Well-Being And A Lack Of Closure With Ex-Partners, Nolan R. Hendrickson, Karolina Štětinová May 2016

The Relationship Between Emotional Well-Being And A Lack Of Closure With Ex-Partners, Nolan R. Hendrickson, Karolina Štětinová

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Breakups and troubles with a past romantic partner have long been known to be a major source of emotional distress in people. However, what is not commonly known are the exact reasons for the vast variability in rates of emotional recovery from a breakup and the effects an ex-partner may have on an individual’s well-being post-breakup. Previous research has indicated that the strongest predictors of decline in well-being from a breakup are due to having personal investments with the other person and length of time since the breakup occurred. The current research used online surveys to investigate correlations between scores …

Asking For It: Rape Myth Acceptance At A Mid-Sized Rural Public University And Policy Recommendations, Stacy Galbo

Theses and Dissertations from 2016

Sexual assault on college campuses has recently grown into a national conversation. There has been a push for universities to examine sexual assault on their campuses, but much of this research has focused on major universities in metropolitan areas. This project extends current research by analyzing the sexual assault experiences and attitudes of students at a mid-sized rural public university. A new survey instrument based on validated campus climate surveys was completed by 522 students at this university. This study evaluates the rape-supportive attitudes of participants and how those attitudes might be impacted by various factors, specifically if sex, being …

Analysis Of Strides For Peace In The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict With The Application Of Theories By Butler And Buber, Rebecca Katherine Buchanan May 2016

Analysis Of Strides For Peace In The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict With The Application Of Theories By Butler And Buber, Rebecca Katherine Buchanan

Student Scholarship

In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, social norms, media pressures and government policies promote division and fear of the other. This constructed understanding of the other often prohibits relationship and harvests fears that lead to perpetuated violence and injustice in the region. However, two organizations, the Abrahamic Reunion and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, exist to combat the hatred and violence by promoting understanding across conflict divides. These two groups design spaces where individuals on opposing sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can foster relationships and develop more complete understandings of the other that contradict the polarized stereotypes promoted by their government and media. …
