Learning From Trayvon: Lessons And Implications For Police Organizations And Leaders, Megan Lepere-Schloop, Joseph H. Lumpkin Chief Of Police
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
Critical incidents like the Martin-Zimmerman encounter prompt us to examine not only the specifics of a particular episode, but also broader questions that hopefully illuminate a path leading to meaningful change. This reflective piece draws on the professional experiences of a highly effective and respected African-American Police Chief to examine some of these broader questions. Chief Joseph H. Lumpkin is a 43-year law enforcement veteran who was recently appointed Chief of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department in Georgia. Before moving to Savannah he served as Chief of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, an agency that solves violent crimes at a …

The Dangerous Intersection Between Race, Class And Stand Your Ground, Lakerri R. Mack, Kristie Roberts-Lewis
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
The Stand Your Ground (SYG) law has and will likely continue to generate a wealth of controversy and political debate. It derives its historical significance from the Castle doctrine that allows citizens to protect themselves. The aftermath of SYG has led to an increase in justifiable homicides of minority victims. A preliminary analysis of data from FBI Uniform Crime Reports suggests that the race of the victim is the foremost determinant in the outcome of SYG cases where the perpetrator is non-minority. This research will further explore the Castle doctrine and examine SYG laws in Florida where racial tension is …

The Ugly Side Of America: Institutional Oppression And Race, Renita Seabrook, Heather Wyatt-Nichol
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
This manuscript examines structural racism through a socio-historical context of institutional oppression and its effects on modern society. The epistemological framework of intersectionality is used to focus on the overlap of oppression, structural racism, and implicit bias evident in the stereotypes and perceptions of the African American male population in the United States. Four eras of socio-historical significance are addressed: 1. Foundations of Racial Oppression; 2. Racism: Reconstruction and Jim Crow; 3. Renewal: Civil Rights and Civil Disobedience; 3. Reckoning: Embedded Racism and the Criminal Justice System.

Out Of The Recent Darkness And Into The New Light: Managerial Implications Emerging From The Martin-Zimmerman Encounter, Brian N. Williams, Billy R. Close, Seong C. Kang
Journal of Public Management & Social Policy
This paper revisits the encounter between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin from two perspectives: the co-production of public safety and public order and black crimmythology. Co-production is associated with the expanding and often unpredictable role that community residents, formal and informal communal organizations and nongovernmental institutions play in assisting public agencies in developing and implementing public services (Whitaker 1980; Parks et al. 1981). Black crimmythology is a term used to describe the historical and contemporary conflation of blackness, maleness, and criminality in the mind of the American public (Close 1997). The objectives of this analysis goes beyond ascertaining the guilt, …

Spiritual Attitudes And Values In Young Children, Maryl Deputy, Jessica Devivo, Nicole Fasolo, Lydia Jones, Debbie Martin, Victoria Pennant
Spiritual Attitudes And Values In Young Children, Maryl Deputy, Jessica Devivo, Nicole Fasolo, Lydia Jones, Debbie Martin, Victoria Pennant
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
Research has shown that spirituality is an important function of a child’s social, emotional, and personal development. Nevertheless, minimal research exists on spiritual attitudes and values in young children. This study examined children’s development and spirituality using a modified version of the Attitudes and Values Questionnaire (AVQ). The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) developed the AVQ with the dimensions of Conscience, Compassion, Social Growth, Emotional Growth, Service to Others, Commitment to God, and Commitment to Jesus. Commitment to God and Commitment to Jesus were optional dimensions later added by ACER to focus specifically on Christian principles. Following permission from …

This is a podcast produced by BBC 4's Peter McManus for "The Digital Human," which aired on 9 May 2016. The show, hosted by Aleks Krotoski, explores the anxiety parents are feeling about their young children's technical prowess. My contribution to the discussion is in the idea of the Gothic Child and the long-standing fear that children will know too much and be too empowered by that knowledge.

The Impact Of Globalization On Global Civil Society Expansion, Barbara Jean Hosto-Marti
The Impact Of Globalization On Global Civil Society Expansion, Barbara Jean Hosto-Marti
Dissertations
In recent decades, global civil society (GCS) actors have emerged as important players in global governance. Global civil society organizations have elevated the policy agenda profile of human rights, women’s rights, and environmental concerns. Global civil society has overcome the objections of powerful countries to establish the International Criminal Court and the Mine Ban Treaty and successfully opposed the Multilateral Agreement on Investment and WTO’s Doha Development Round. These notable successes demonstrate the need for a better understanding of global civil society’s motives and its role in international public policy. This dissertation, uses a 29-year panel regression of 122 countries …
The Role Of Money And Endorsements In Same-Sex Marriage Ballot Initiatives, Jessica Lorraine Loyet Gracey
The Role Of Money And Endorsements In Same-Sex Marriage Ballot Initiatives, Jessica Lorraine Loyet Gracey
Dissertations
This research examines how well certain theories of direct democracy explain outcomes of ballot measures on gay marriage bans. Most theories of direct democracy focus on the types of issues that are quite dissimilar from gay marriage bans. Therefore these theories will likely not do a good job of explaining the results of these elections. In particular I examine the role of campaign spending and elite endorsements in campaigns for gay marriage ban ballot initiatives. In candidate elections, voters commonly use heuristics such as party labels and past performance to help them decide. In most ballot initiative contests voters rely …

Our Rich History: Covington Ladies Home Celebrating 130th Year, Serving Senior Women With Quality Care, Bill Stolz
University Libraries' Staff Publications
2016 marks the 130th year of operation for the Covington Ladies Home located at 702 Garrard Street in the Licking Riverside Historic District. The organization, originally called the Home for Aged and Indigent Women (still visible in the stone above the main entrance today), was founded in 1886 by Covington resident Ellen B. Dietrick, an early advocate for equality and education for women, with the goal of providing care for women over the age of 60. Today, 130 years later, the mission of the Covington Ladies Home is the same, “to serve senior women, regardless of their economic circumstances, by …
The Nerve: Associations Between Perceived Parenting Style And Coping With Stress, Lauren Mcgrew
The Nerve: Associations Between Perceived Parenting Style And Coping With Stress, Lauren Mcgrew
Undergraduate Theses
Throughout a lifetime, women are twice as likely as men to develop an anxiety disorder. Several factors – biological, psychological, and social/environmental – are involved in the mechanisms of anxiety. The present study was designed with particular interest in the association between parents’ parenting styles and daughter anxiety, specifically paternal influences in correlation with how daughters cope with stress. Previous studies suggest that anxious tendencies in parents can be transferred to their children (Ballash, Leyfer, Buckley, & Woodruff-Borden, 2006). Studies have also identified three main parenting styles – authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive – which may also play a role in …
Standing Up Or Standing By: Examining The Bystander Effect In School Bullying, Scott M. Fluke
Standing Up Or Standing By: Examining The Bystander Effect In School Bullying, Scott M. Fluke
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
School bullying represents a serious mental health problem for youth in the United States. Bullying is a social phenomenon that is affected by the social context in which it occurs. Bystanders (i.e., individuals who witness bullying), are present in the vast majority of bullying situations. When bystanders choose to intervene on behalf of the victim, they are able to stop the bullying about 50% of the time. Unfortunately, bystanders rarely stand up for victims, instead frequently choosing to help the perpetrator or passively observe the bullying situation. Researchers have identified the bystander effect (i.e., the inhibitory effect of other bystanders …
Growth And Variability Of School District Income Tax Revenues: Is Tax Base Diversification A Good Idea For School Financing?, Joshua C. Hall, Antonis M. Koumpias
Growth And Variability Of School District Income Tax Revenues: Is Tax Base Diversification A Good Idea For School Financing?, Joshua C. Hall, Antonis M. Koumpias
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
School districts in Ohio have the option of diversifying their revenue base by adopting income taxes. Using a panel of Ohio school districts that adopted a local income tax from 1990 to 2008, we find that revenues are pro-cyclical and fluctuate only mildly. For every dollar increase in average school district income, tax revenues increased by 21 and 3 cents in the long- and short-run. We also find that the school district tax base fully adjusts to its long-run equilibrium within three years. Our results highlight a revenue-stabilizing role of income tax bases on total school district tax revenues.

We examined the prevalence and correlates of satisfaction with appearance and weight. Participants (N = 12,176) completed an online survey posted on the NBCNews.com and Today.com websites. Few men and women were very to extremely dissatisfied with their physical appearances (6%; 9%), but feeling very to extremely dissatisfied with weight was more common (15%; 20%). Only about one-fourth of men and women felt very to extremely satisfied with their appearances (28%; 26%) and weights (24%; 20%). Men and women with higher body masses reported higher appearance and weight dissatisfaction. Dissatisfied people had higher Neuroticism, more preoccupied and fearful attachment …
