Born Digital News Collections: Other Libraries Approaches, Elisa Villanueva, Jasper Faase Aug 2016

Born Digital News Collections: Other Libraries Approaches, Elisa Villanueva, Jasper Faase

IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session

Nowadays most newspapers (or almost all of them) have a digital version or are definitely turning to digital. Furthermore, there are many news websites which provide news content. Additionally, with the rise of Web 2.0 many websites are based on user generated content, and others are almost built on the user’s posts and comments as their main sources.

Most of the libraries face challenges collecting, preserving ‘born digital’ news and newspapers which puts this part of our cultural heritage at risk. .The aim of this paper will be to present a desktop research into the approach other libraries or cultural …

Innovative Approaches Of Historical Newspapers: Data Mining, Data Visualization, Semantic Enrichment, Jean-Philippe Moreux, Caroline Kageneck Aug 2016

Innovative Approaches Of Historical Newspapers: Data Mining, Data Visualization, Semantic Enrichment, Jean-Philippe Moreux, Caroline Kageneck

IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session

In this age of Big Data this paper describes how digital libraries can apply at large scale innovative approaches to better valorize and bring better experiences of old newspapers.

On the first hand, the state-of-the-art OLR (optical layout recognition) technique in one of the largest heritage press digitization projects in Europe (Europeana Newspapers, www.europeana-newspapers.eu, 2012-2015) was used in a data mining experiment. Data analysis was applied to quantitative metadata derived from a 850K pages subset of six XIXth-XXth c. French newspaper titles from the BnF collection. The METS/ALTO XML data was analyzed with data mining and data visualization techniques …

Does Public Transit Affect Crime? The Addition Of A Bus Line In Cleveland, Morgan Neiss Aug 2016

Does Public Transit Affect Crime? The Addition Of A Bus Line In Cleveland, Morgan Neiss

The Journal of Economics and Politics

Public transportation affects crime rates in neighborhoods surrounding its implementation. It can give criminals easier access to potential targets and decrease the probability of getting caught, or it can give lower-income individuals better access to reliable transportation, which decreases the probability of those individuals getting involved in criminal activity. This paper analyzes available criminal data, property data, and public assistance data for the City of Cleveland to study the effects on property crime rate after the 2008 implementation of a public bus line. The paper's hypothesis is that there is a difference in the mean crime rate before and after …

Identity And Efficacy: Latinos In The United States, Ryan Salzman, Shauna Reilly Aug 2016

Identity And Efficacy: Latinos In The United States, Ryan Salzman, Shauna Reilly

The Journal of Economics and Politics

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE EFFECT OF IDENTITY ON POLITICAL ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOR IN THE UNITED STATES ARE INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT AS ITS POPULATION BECOMES MORE DIVERSE. THE PRIMARY DRIVER OF THAT INCREASED DIVERSITY IS THE EXPANSION OF THE LATINO POPULATION. MOST RESEARCH FOCUSES ON DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VARIOUS ETHNIC GROUPS. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND THE EFFECT OF IDENTITY STRENGTH WITHIN THE LATINO POPULATION ON ATTITUDES ABOUT GOVERNMENT. USING THE 2006 LATINO NATIONAL SURVEY, THE ROLE OF IDENTITY ON EFFICACY IS EXPLORED. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT EFFICACY AMONG LATINOS IS RELATED TO IDENTITY. WE ALSO FIND RESULTS THAT REINFORCE THE PRESENCE OF …

Academic Unions In Recessionary Times, John Rothgeb, Katherine Mitakides Aug 2016

Academic Unions In Recessionary Times, John Rothgeb, Katherine Mitakides

The Journal of Economics and Politics

THIS ARTICLE INVESTIGATES HOW UNIONIZATION AFFECTED THE WAY COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES HANDLED ISSUES RELATING TO FACULTY PAY AND LAYOFFS, DEGREE PROGRAM CANCELLATIONS AND TEACHING LOADS, AND STUDENT SERVICES DURING THE SEVERE RECESSION THAT HIT THE COUNTRY BETWEEN LATE 2007 AND EARLY 2010. THE DATA ARE FROM A NATIONAL SURVEY OF DEPARTMENT CHAIRS. THE RESULTS REVEAL THAT UNIONIZATION REDUCED THE LIKELIHOOD OF FACULTY PAY ACTIONS AND THAT CLASSES WOULD BE TAUGHT AT EXTENDED TIMES, BUT WAS ASSOCIATED WITH A GREATER CHANCE THAT CLASSES WOULD BE OFFERED AT OFF-CAMPUS LOCATIONS. UNIONIZATION HAD NO EFFECT ON BUDGET CUTS, WHETHER FACULTY WERE LAID-OFF OR …

Uncertainty And The Voluntary Provision Of A Pure Public Good In A Two-Moment Decision Model, Arthur J. Caplan Aug 2016

Uncertainty And The Voluntary Provision Of A Pure Public Good In A Two-Moment Decision Model, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we explore the potential benefits of uncertainty that may arise in a two-moment model of the voluntary provision of a pure public good. We find that an increase in a given contributor i’s risk associated with the aggregate contribution level of the other contributors (i.e., an increase in social uncertainty) induces that contributor to increase his own contribution level if and only if the uncertainty's incremental effect on the expected value of his net marginal utility is negative. Contributor i’s welfare likewise increases when a closely related condition is met, namely that the uncertainty's marginal …

"Why Are We Still Talking About Diversity?" Combatting Misconceptions In An Academic Library, Michael Mungin, Yasmeen Shorish Aug 2016

"Why Are We Still Talking About Diversity?" Combatting Misconceptions In An Academic Library, Michael Mungin, Yasmeen Shorish

Libraries

This poster will present the assessment and intervention activities of individuals at a mid-sized academic library with respect to diversity personnel initiatives. Each year, library employees complete a survey designed to gauge satisfaction and areas for improvement. Qualitative data suggest that library staff are confused about definitions of diversity and/or lack requisite buy-in and interest in initiatives that address diversity concerns. The activities and outcomes of an intervention to address these issues will be discussed.

Examining The Role Of Executive Functions In Focal Processing Of Event-Based Prospective Memory, Tatsuya T. Shigeta Aug 2016

Examining The Role Of Executive Functions In Focal Processing Of Event-Based Prospective Memory, Tatsuya T. Shigeta

Theses and Dissertations

Prospective Memory (PM) refers to remembering an intention to be acted upon in the future. Such a memory may be triggered by an event (i.e., Event-based PM) where a specific cue reminds one of the previously encoded intention. PM can be assessed in a lab-setting by having subjects learn a baseline task, subsequently receiving a PM instruction, completing a distractor task, and then going through a test phase where the PM task (i.e., responding to PM cues) is embedded within the ongoing task. The multiprocess view (McDaniel & Einstein, 2000) posits that PM can be retrieved primarily using two different …

Nurturing Compassion Development Among College Students: A Longitudinal Study, Thomas G. Plante, Katherine Halman Aug 2016

Nurturing Compassion Development Among College Students: A Longitudinal Study, Thomas G. Plante, Katherine Halman

Psychology

Little research exists on the development of compassion among college undergraduates. This study tracks changes in compassion and identifies factors associated with these changes over the course of undergraduate students’ college careers, from the time of admittance to the time of graduation. Compassion levels assessed at the point of college entrance accounted for 25% of the variance in compassion at the time of graduation. These findings provided evidence for the notion that compassion can continue to be cultivated once in college. Predictors such as diversity training, the frequency of religious service attendance, participation in community-based service-learning, political identification, and feeling …

Are Prompts Provided By Electronic Books As Effective For Teaching Preschoolers A Biological Concept As Those Provided By Adults?, Gabrielle Strouse, Patricia Ganea Aug 2016

Are Prompts Provided By Electronic Books As Effective For Teaching Preschoolers A Biological Concept As Those Provided By Adults?, Gabrielle Strouse, Patricia Ganea

School of Education Faculty Publications

Research Findings: Prior research indicates that shared book reading is an effective method for teaching biological concepts to young children. Adult questioning during reading enhances children’s comprehension. We investigated whether adult prompting during the reading of an electronic book enhanced children’s understanding of a biological concept. Ninety-one 4-year-olds read about camouflage in 3 conditions. We varied how prompts were provided: (a) read by the book, (b) read by a researcher, or (c) given face to face by the researcher. There was an interaction between children’s initial vocabulary level and condition. Children with low vocabulary scores gave fewer camouflage responses …

Background: Epigenetic biomarkers of aging (the “epigenetic clock”) have the potential to address puzzling findings surrounding mortality rates and incidence of cardio-metabolic disease such as: (1) women consistently exhibiting lower mortality than men despite having higher levels of morbidity; (2) racial/ethnic groups having different mortality rates even after adjusting for socioeconomic differences; (3) the black/white mortality cross-over effect in late adulthood; and (4) Hispanics in the United States having a longer life expectancy than Caucasians despite having a higher burden of traditional cardio-metabolic risk factors.

Results: We analyzed blood, saliva, and brain samples from seven different racial/ethnic groups. …

Marijuana Use Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men And The Hiv Care Continuum: Findings From The Uconnect Cohort, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM) are at highest risk for HIV seroconversion in the United States. Successful movement through the HIV care continuum is an important intervention for limiting onwards HIV transmission. Objective: Little data exists on how substances most commonly used by YBMSM, such as marijuana, are related to the HIV continuum, which represents the primary aim of this study. Methods: A cohort of YBMSM (n = 618) was generated through respondent-driven sampling. Frequency of marijuana use and marijuana use as a sex-drug were assessed across the HIV care continuum using weighted logistic regression …

Longer Classes Versus More Frequent Classes: Which Wins? Evidence From A Liberal Arts College, Timothy M. Diette, Manu Raghav Aug 2016

Longer Classes Versus More Frequent Classes: Which Wins? Evidence From A Liberal Arts College, Timothy M. Diette, Manu Raghav

School of Business and Leadership Working Papers

Colleges and universities have to stagger their classes across different times and days to make the best use of their existing buildings. Some of these class meetings are for different lengths of time and meet a different number of days per week. In addition, students and faculty have increased demand for courses that meet fewer days per week. There is some concern that classes that meet more often are better suited for student learning than others. However, this paper finds that, after controlling for the class time and course fixed effects as well as faculty and student fixed effects, there …

在不明不暗的虚妄中寻找青春 : 当代中国“80 后”非政府组织工作者的价值观和行为转变研究, Guoyuan Sun Aug 2016

在不明不暗的虚妄中寻找青春 : 当代中国“80 后”非政府组织工作者的价值观和行为转变研究, Guoyuan Sun

Lingnan Theses

What If Klein & Barron Are Right About Insect Sentience?, Bob Fischer Aug 2016

What If Klein & Barron Are Right About Insect Sentience?, Bob Fischer

Animal Sentience

If Klein & Barron are right, then insects may well be able to feel pain. If they can, then the standard approach to animal ethics generates some implausible results. Philosophers need to develop alternatives to this framework to avoid them.

Subjective Experience And Moral Standing, Andy Lamey Aug 2016

Subjective Experience And Moral Standing, Andy Lamey

Animal Sentience

Klein & Barron’s analysis focuses on the capacity for any subjective experience at all. It does not seek to demonstrate that insects can experience pleasure and pain in particular. This would be something of which insects have not traditionally been thought capable. If further research were to demonstrate that one or more insect species turn out to be conscious, yet incapable of experiencing pleasure and pain, it would give rise to a philosophical question that ethicists have yet to answer: Would a creature that is conscious, but lacks the capacity to feel pain, have moral standing?

IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session

Each day increases the amount of digital born sound and audiovisual documents as collections in libraries, archives and museums. However are unaware how these collections must be preserved for the future. Therefore, the risk of loss is increased. All types of sound and audiovisual recordings in risk if they are not documented and preserved properly, highlights the recordings of the indigenous peoples.

This is serious phenomenon because with the loss of an indigenous language will be lost knowledge, worldview, and the way of understanding the world of a social group. The diversity of the indigenous languages of Mexico as cultural …

A Cooperative Model For Preserving Historical Television News Content, Morgan Gieringer Aug 2016

A Cooperative Model For Preserving Historical Television News Content, Morgan Gieringer

IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session

The archival profession must begin to confront the many challenges inherent in the large-scale preservation of twentieth century audio/visual resources. A significant portion of our shared cultural heritage, including historical television news recordings, is at risk due to complicated copyright issues, degradation of the original media, the cost involved in digitizing audio/visual resources, and the difficulty of preserving high resolution digital video files. Cooperation between heritage institutions and content creators facilitated by a Custodial Partnership Model is the key to overcoming these significant challenges. The University of North Texas (UNT) and the Dallas/Fort Worth (Texas) affiliate station of the National …

"At Risk": An Analysis Of Newspaper Source Materials Digitized By U.S. And European Repositories, Maria Smith Aug 2016

"At Risk": An Analysis Of Newspaper Source Materials Digitized By U.S. And European Repositories, Maria Smith

IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session

In 2015, in cooperation with IFLA News Media Section, The Center for Research Libraries conducted an in-depth assessment of the outputs of the major newspaper digitization efforts in the U.S. and Europe. The purpose of the assessment was to identify the comparative strengths and gaps in the corpus of newspapers digitized to date, relative to the total body of newspapers held by libraries. The findings of that assessment revealed a number of areas where cooperative action was required by libraries to address the persistent limitations in our shared effort.

A key observation of that assessment was that the bulk of …

Wisconsin Model: Capturing Weekly Newspaper Websites, Ron Larson

IFLA 2016 News Media Satellite Session

In 1845, members of the Wisconsin press led the charge to create a historical society and urged its fellow members to gather their respective newspapers each year and donate them to the society’s library.

An editor wrote, “A full collection of Territorial papers, neatly bound and preserved in the State library, we hardly need suggest, would be of the utmost importance for future reference. Come then, brethren, let us arrange ourselves cheek by jowl in some vacant alcove, that we may tell the wise ones that come after us, what happened in our day.”

This progressive way of thinking helped …

As international efforts to develop guidelines for data management emerge, the need for monitoring data deposit compliance increases. Utah State University has a team of university administrators, IT specialists, and librarians that addresses research data management issues. They developed a process to receive reports from faculty with successful grants that ultimately allows creation of records for data. Research grants are tracked though all stages and information about data and publications shared publicly on platforms capable of contributing scholarly work to research outputs aggregators (such as Share) and also to public facing bibliographic aggregators like Worldcat.
