Patterns Of Sexual Offending, Rachel Lovell, Fred Butcher, Daniel Flannery, Laura Overman, Tiffany Walker Sep 2016

Patterns Of Sexual Offending, Rachel Lovell, Fred Butcher, Daniel Flannery, Laura Overman, Tiffany Walker

Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education Reports and Briefs

This report describes patterns of sexual offending. The exploratory examination of the typology of offending helps describe different types of sexual assaults by providing context behind how these different types of sexual assaults occur and who the offenders may be. Guided by the scientific literature on sexual assaults and violence against women, we examined data on our sample of 243 Sexual Assault Kits (SAKs) to discern a pattern for four types of sexual assaults: sexual assaults that involve kidnapping, sexual assaults committed by strangers, sexual assaults committed by multiple offenders, and sexual assaults that involve captivity.

Implementing Marriage: The Issuance Of Marriage Licenses In Missouri After Obergefell, Jessica Loyet Gracey Sep 2016

Implementing Marriage: The Issuance Of Marriage Licenses In Missouri After Obergefell, Jessica Loyet Gracey

Missouri Policy Journal

The Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalized same-sex marriage throughout the country. Some Missouri counties began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples immediately, while others did not until two weeks following the decision. The study examines attempts to explain the differences in the amount of time that counties in Missouri took to implement the Obergefell ruling. Factors such as partisanship, education, religion, and the service industry in each county are examined. The findings indicate that only educational levels in each county are a statistically significant predictor of when a county began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Missouri Sentencing And Race: A Closer Look From 2007-2015, Grant Shostak, Ryan V. Guffey

Missouri Policy Journal

Contrary to the perception, it is judges, not juries, that typically determine the sentence for a convicted criminal defendant. While all citizens are to be treated equal under the law, recent cries to overhaul our criminal justice system came to a head following the wake of Officer Darren Wilson’s (Caucasian) shooting and killing of Michael Brown (African-American) in Ferguson, Missouri. This paper attempts to examine sentencing practices of Missouri courts from 2007-2015, covering a time period both before and after Brown’s death in 2014.

The Implementation Of Alternative Pain Control Methods By Dental Hygienists, Alejandra Valadez Rodriguez

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

As a dental hygienist, it is important to understand new concepts and techniques that can contribute to a more comfortable setting for patients who experience dental anxiety. Alternative pain control methods can assist in alleviating patient anxiety, therefore, providing a more efficient and relaxed clinical atmosphere for both patient and clinician. “Give A Man A Fish: Reflections On The New Politics Of Distribution”, By James Ferguson [Book Review], Daniela Atanasova Sep 2016

“Give A Man A Fish: Reflections On The New Politics Of Distribution”, By James Ferguson [Book Review], Daniela Atanasova

Southern African Journal of Policy and Development

Development policy and discourse have long shied away from the idea of giving money directly to the poor. In his latest book, anthropologist James Ferguson argues that this reluctance is slowly giving way. He documents a veritable ‘cash transfer revolution’ taking place in the Global South, with countries such as South Africa, Brazil and Namibia in the vanguard. Drawing on a rich empirical and ethnographic literature on cash transfers and the livelihoods of the poor, with a focus on southern Africa, Ferguson delivers a thought-provoking analysis of the genesis, limitations and radical potential of these programmes. At its most original, …

Impact Of Flood On Rural Population And Strategies For Mitigation: A Case Study Of Darbhanga District, Bihar State, India, Vikash Kumar, Suk Yin Caroline Cheng, Ajit Kumar Singh

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Floods are one of the most disastrous acts of nature and impact human life in multiple ways. Damages by floods in rural areas are more severe compared to urban counterparts due to poverty, limited infrastructures and access to resources and health care services. The Province of Bihar in India, with a population of 104.1 million, has 76 per cent of the population living under recurring threat of floods. In 2008, Bihar experienced severe floods in the northern region that affected more than 2.3 million people; and in 2013, they affected more than 5.9 million in 3768 villages across 20 rural …
