Acquisitions Everywhere: Modeling An Acquisitions Data Standard To Connect A Distributed Environment, Eric M. Hanson, Paul W. Lightcap, Matthew R. Miguez
Charleston Library Conference
Acquisitions functions remain operationally crucial in providing access to paid information resources, but data formats and workflows utilized within library acquisitions remain primarily within the traditional integrated library system (ILS). As libraries have evolved to use distributed systems to manage information resources, so too must acquisitions functions adapt to an environment that may include the ILS, e‐resource management systems (ERMS), institutional repositories (IR), and other digital asset management systems (DAMS).
This presentation is intended to articulate a vision for applying standards‐based practice—as already employed for resource description—to acquisitions functions in a variety of metadata schema and systems. Utilization of standards …
A Crossroads For Collection Development And Assessment, Its Fallout, And Unknowns: Where Do We Go From Here?, Thomas Reich
A Crossroads For Collection Development And Assessment, Its Fallout, And Unknowns: Where Do We Go From Here?, Thomas Reich
Charleston Library Conference
Where do we go from here? Achieving goals of sustainable resource collections through a thorough collection assessment is evermore challenged by fallout and unknowns lurking ubiquitously. There is an ever‐increasing competition for both physical space and economic space. We’re at an important crossroads for collection development, collection assessment, and libraries themselves. Change and assessment must be sustainable. To be effective, change must create its own momentum. Three years into our collection assessment project, momentum has been steady and efforts continue. However, we’ve encountered fallout and unknowns which we hadn’t planned on, and these are of an institutional and political nature.
Changing The Conversation: Using Agile Approaches To Develop And Assess Collections Holistically, Genya O'Gara, Cheryl Duncan
Changing The Conversation: Using Agile Approaches To Develop And Assess Collections Holistically, Genya O'Gara, Cheryl Duncan
Charleston Library Conference
In 2013–2014, James Madison University (JMU) Libraries embarked on an endeavor to create a flexible, holistic model for developing, managing, and assessing collections. The effort began by surveying what qualitative and quantitative data was being collected that could inform big‐picture questions about whether library collections were meeting evolving campus research needs. The investigation included an in‐depth literature review, the launch, evaluation, and adoption of several pilot projects, and ultimately the construction of an evaluation rubric and disciplinary subject snapshots that articulate both the impact of collections and potential gaps within them at institutional and departmental levels.
In order to remain …
Bam: The Basic Access Model For Content Mining Agreements, Darby Orcutt
Bam: The Basic Access Model For Content Mining Agreements, Darby Orcutt
Charleston Library Conference
The Basic Access Model (BAM) provides a reasonable and practical framework of business terms for libraries and vendors to agree on how to facilitate user access to digital content for content mining purposes, as well as a principled and agreed upon industry foundation for future cooperation. BAM has already opened up significant content for mining access. The sooner we can open up our collections—both as libraries and as vendors—to the new and emerging tools and methods of content mining researchers, the more relevant we and our collections will be.
Implementing Collection Life Cycle Management, Annie Bélanger
Implementing Collection Life Cycle Management, Annie Bélanger
Charleston Library Conference
In a time of increasing physical collection space pressures and rapidly evolving higher education institutions, a holistic understanding of the collection life cycle, a strategic approach to collection development and retention, and increased stakeholder engagement is needed. Some librarians struggle with what materials to withdraw, especially if there is faculty opposition, and how to move forward collaboratively. This article will explore leveraging the experience of leading the local culture shift in a large Association of Research Library, the principles, policies and methods required to shift mental models towards what must be retained, facilitating withdrawal decisions, and connecting collection development with …

Back To The Future: Re‐Examining The Need For Shelf‐Ready Processes In The E‐Book Environment, Susan J. Martin, Pamela D. Ward, Brittney L. Washington
Charleston Library Conference
Shelf‐ready processing of print materials is a commonly available service from library book vendors, and many libraries outsource these services in order to help save staff time and costs, and to expedite the process. However, in the age where print monographs are increasingly replaced with e‐books, do these services still make fiscal sense? In the spring of 2015, the Texas Woman’s University Libraries were looking to expand shelf‐ready services to a second vendor, but before doing so opted to do a feasibility study to see if shelf‐ready services were still needed and economical. This paper presents the findings of a …

One Library’S Successful Venture In Providing Comprehensive Streaming Media Services, Allyson Mower, Mary Ann James, Catherine Soehner, Maria Hunt, Dave Heyborne, Joni Clayton
Charleston Library Conference
Thoroughly understanding what professors and instructors needed to accomplish their teaching goals with streaming video was the first step enabling one academic library to successfully manage a rapid increase in demand for streaming media. The second element was incorporating an expert understanding of copyright law and the nature of the video marketplace.
This paper will strive to educate librarians and other professional library staff on how they can best integrate media streaming into mainstream library services for their campus faculty, as well as how to provide a full range of streaming services. The paper also will address workflow, communication with …

Paper Session Ii: Computer Forensics Field Triage Process Model, Marcus K. Rogers, James Goldman, Rick Mislan, Timothy Wedge, Steve Debrota
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
With the proliferation of digital based evidence, the need for the timely identification, analysis and interpretation of digital evidence is becoming more crucial. In many investigations critical information is required while at the scene or within a short period of time - measured in hours as opposed to days. The traditional cyber forensics approach of seizing a system(s)/media, transporting it to the lab, making a forensic image(s), and then searching the entire system for potential evidence, is no longer appropriate in some circumstances. In cases such as child abductions, pedophiles, missing or exploited persons, time is of the essence. In …

On Being An Entrepreneur: The Nigerian Perspective, Olayinka K. Binuomoyo
Young African Leaders Journal of Development
It is common knowledge that the success of an economy rests on the strength of its entrepreneurs. Present-day challenges make it imperative for countries in the same bracket as Nigeria to deemphasize reliance on oil and government for social crumbs, to embrace innovative activities and deepen small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs). SMEs are important drivers of economic growth but they face significant challenges as obtained in Nigeria where infrastructures such as power, transportation and financing needed to make entrepreneurship work seldom exists. With a high unemployment rate, young Nigerians are required to embrace entrepreneurship. The aim of this paper is …

Understanding Where We Live And How We Travel, Kristina Marie Currans
Understanding Where We Live And How We Travel, Kristina Marie Currans
PSU Transportation Seminars
Understanding changing residential preferences—especially as they are represented within land use and travel demand models—is fundamental to understanding the drivers of future housing, land use and transportation policies. As communities struggle to address a rising number of social challenges with increasing economic uncertainty, transportation and land use planning have become increasingly centered on assumptions concerning the market for residential environments and travel choices. In response, an added importance has been placed on the development of toolkits capable of providing a robust and flexible understanding of how differing assumptions contribute to a set of planning scenarios and impact future residential location …
‘Wannabe Toxic-Free?’ From Precautionary Consumption To Corporeal Citizenship, Dayna Scott, Jennie Haw, Robyn Lee
‘Wannabe Toxic-Free?’ From Precautionary Consumption To Corporeal Citizenship, Dayna Scott, Jennie Haw, Robyn Lee
Articles & Book Chapters
Ecological citizens are increasingly encouraged to adopt ‘precautionary consumption’ – a set of practices aimed at shielding them from the potential health harms of exposures to everyday toxics. The utility and the effects of precautionary consumption in relation to common chemical exposures are investigated. Precautionary consumption is not only of questionable utility, but is fundamentally misguided as an approach for inspiring antitoxics organizing. The failure of this approach is in part due to its assumption of a naturally bounded, autonomous individual who is able to maintain an impermeable boundary between herself and the environment. Drawing on the work of material …

This article explores the different forms of disruptive subjectivity that have developed in the context of the post-2008 global and European crises. The article traces developments both before and after 2008, with a specific focus on events in Spain and the UK. These country contexts are chosen due to their considerable differences in terms of the impact that the crisis had; yet we witness notable similarities with regard to the instances of refusal and resistance observed, especially in terms of the motives held and forms adopted, albeit with differences in scale. The paper presents the results of qualitative research, including …

Exploiting Metacognitive Networks Embedded In Narrative Focus Group Interviews Using Nodexl, Divan Jagals, Marthie Sophia Van Der Walt
Exploiting Metacognitive Networks Embedded In Narrative Focus Group Interviews Using Nodexl, Divan Jagals, Marthie Sophia Van Der Walt
The Qualitative Report
Development of metacognitive theory for changing pedagogy remains an essential research activity. A lack of sufficient clear-cut qualitative analysis procedures extracting embedded metacognitive constructs from qualitative data (e.g., narrative focus group interviews) can hinder development of theory. An approach is therefore needed to analyse qualitative metacognitive data exploiting embedded metacognitive constructs for theory development. In an undergraduate fourth-year mathematics education module, two groups of students (Group A: n = 6; Group B: n = 5) participated in a series of focus group interviews. Participants designed and refined mathematics lessons about the concept of place value. We identified metacognitive networks as …

Enhancing The Quality Of The Findings Of A Longitudinal Case Study: Reviewing Trustworthiness Via Atlas.Ti, Chooi Kean Ang, Mohamed Amin Embi, Melor Md Yunus
The Qualitative Report
Case study often implies the collection of unstructured data and qualitative analysis of those data. Additionally, it is often argued that the aim of case study research should be to capture cases in their uniqueness, rather than to use them as a basis for wider generalization or theoretical inference of some kind. Hence, it often raises a fundamental issue about the aspect of trustworthiness. This paper aims to examine the extent of support by using ATLAS.ti for data analysis in establishing trustworthiness in a longitudinal case study. The case study is on the use of e-portfolio as a continuing professional …

A Moveable Beast: Subjective Influence Of Human-Animal Relationships On Risk Perception, And Risk Behaviour During Bushfire Threat, Joshua L. Trigg, Kirrilly Thompson, Bradley Smith, Pauleen Bennett
The Qualitative Report
This article examines how human-animal connections influence risk perception and behaviour in companion animal guardians exposed to bushfire threat in Australia. Although the objective role of psychological bonds with companion animals is well accepted by researchers, subjective interpretations of these bonds by animal guardians are relatively underexamined in this context. We argue that the ways in which connections with pets and other animals are represented influences different forms of safety-risk perception and behaviour when managing animals’ safety in the face of disaster threat. Thematic analysis of 21 semi-structured interviews with South Australian residents in bushfire-affected areas supported the role of …
Leader Behavior Portfolios, Matthew Stephen Arbogast
Leader Behavior Portfolios, Matthew Stephen Arbogast
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Existing leadership theories and applied resources contain bountiful lists of recommended behaviors for leaders to employ, yet an integrated model that produces the most efficient set of leader behaviors does not currently exist. A standard, quantitative method to compare and contrast leader behaviors is needed to siphon utility from each resource, leading to an integrated and diversified set of optimal behaviors for leaders to consider. Leaders have limited time and need a reliable method to make informed behavioral decisions that consistently produce the most positive effects on the desired outcome. Unfortunately, leaders do not have the time to sift through …
Do Recessions Accelerate Routine-Biased Technological Change? Evidence From Vacancy Postings, Brad J. Hershbein, Lisa B. Kahn
Do Recessions Accelerate Routine-Biased Technological Change? Evidence From Vacancy Postings, Brad J. Hershbein, Lisa B. Kahn
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
We show that skill requirements in job vacancy postings differentially increased in MSAs that were hit hard by the Great Recession, relative to less hard-hit areas, and that these differences across MSAs persist through the end of 2015. The increases are prevalent within occupations, more pronounced in the non-traded sector, driven by both within-firm upskilling and substitution from older to newer firms, accompanied by increases in capital stock, and are evident in realized employment. We argue that this evidence reflects the restructuring of production toward more skilled workers and routine-labor saving technologies, and that the Great Recession accelerated this process.
