The Human Black Market, Gaye Gwion
The Human Black Market, Gaye Gwion
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
The human black market is the exportation of humans against their will for the purpose of forced labor. The number of people being trafficked is growing by the years and there are no laws to prevent human trafficking. Most of the servants come from third world countries and end up in the United States and Canada.
The United States is the top country of destination for human trafficking. The laws that are currently present are not aiding in the prevention of human trafficking, but instead they focus on specific parts of human trafficking that are not as extreme as the …
The Unforeseen Evolution Of Technology, Dylan White
The Unforeseen Evolution Of Technology, Dylan White
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
Technology has evolved in the past two decades to alter how countries and their people live in the present day. Said technology has also both solved and created new problems for world powers (i.e. the U.S. and China) to face. Issues of cyber security and cyber surveillance are already potential problems that need to be addressed, where topics like cyber warfare need to be closely monitored with time. All of these are potentially underestimated threats to civil liberties, and to countries in their entirety.
I agree with the findings in my project… • The United States is a model to …
Take A Stand For Feminism, Michaella Deladia
Take A Stand For Feminism, Michaella Deladia
Nebraska College Preparatory Academy: Senior Capstone Projects
The women’s movement is a new wave of feminisim that fights for the abolishment of the harassment and hyper-sexualization of women. It’s important because in today’s society, women are constantly getting degraded compared to men. It’s time to end the prejudice and see everybody as equals. I found that it’s a growing problem but anybody can become aware and realize the issues that surround us.
I do agree with with the information that I found saying that women really can’t be considered to have obtained these equality rights until people stop demeaning them in everyday life. The push for equality …
Toddlers’ Word Learning From Contingent And Non-Contingent Video On Touchscreens, Heather L. Kirkorian, Koeun Choi, Tiffany A. Pempek
Toddlers’ Word Learning From Contingent And Non-Contingent Video On Touchscreens, Heather L. Kirkorian, Koeun Choi, Tiffany A. Pempek
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Researchers examined whether contingent experience using a touchscreen increased toddlers’ ability to learn a word from video. One-hundred-sixteen children (24-36 mos) watched an on-screen actress label an object: (1) without interacting, (2) with instructions to touch anywhere on the screen, or (3) with instructions to touch a specific spot (location of labeled object). The youngest children learned from contingent video in the absence of reciprocal interactions with a live social partner, but only when contingent video required specific responses that emphasized important information on the screen. Conversely, this condition appeared to disrupt learning by slightly older children who were otherwise …
Statistical Analyses Of The Resilience Function, Joseph W. Houpt, Daniel R. Little
Statistical Analyses Of The Resilience Function, Joseph W. Houpt, Daniel R. Little
Psychology Faculty Publications
The extent to which distracting information influences decisions can be informative about the nature of the underlying cognitive and perceptual processes. In a recent paper, a response time-based measure for quantifying the degree of interference (or facilitation) from distracting information termed resilience was introduced. Despite using a statistical measure, the analysis was limited to qualitative comparisons between different model predictions. In this paper, we demonstrate how statistical procedures from workload capacity analysis can be applied to the new resilience functions. In particular, we present an approach to null-hypothesis testing of resilience functions and a method based on functional principal components …
Creating A Common Trajectory: Shared Decision Making And Distributed Cognition In Medical Consultations, Katherine Domjan Lippa, Valerie L. Shalin
Creating A Common Trajectory: Shared Decision Making And Distributed Cognition In Medical Consultations, Katherine Domjan Lippa, Valerie L. Shalin
Psychology Faculty Publications
The growing literature on shared decision making and patient centered care emphasizes the patient’s role in clinical care, but research on clinical reasoning almost exclusively addresses physician cognition. In this article, we suggest clinical cognition is distributed between physicians and patients and assess how distributed clinical cognition functions during interactions between medical professionals and patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). A combination of cognitive task analysis and discourse analysis reveals the distribution of clinical reasoning between 24 patients and 3 medical professionals engaged in MS management. Findings suggest that cognition was distributed between patients and physicians in all major tasks except …

Navigating The Decision Space: Shared Medical Decision Making As Distributed Cognition, Katherine D. Lippa, Markus Alexander Feufel, F. Eric Robinson, Valerie L. Shalin
Psychology Faculty Publications
Despite increasing prominence, little is known about the cognitive processes underlying shared decision making. To investigate these processes, we conceptualize shared decision making as a form of distributed cognition. We introduce a Decision Space Model to identify physical and social influences on decision making. Using field observations and interviews, we demonstrate that patients and physicians in both acute and chronic care consider these influences when identifying the need for a decision, searching for decision parameters, making actionable decisions Based on the distribution of access to information and actions, we then identify four related patterns: physician dominated; physician-defined, patient-made; patient-defined, physician-made; …

The Effect Of Stress Coping Techniques In Sports, Lestter Yeh
The Effect Of Stress Coping Techniques In Sports, Lestter Yeh
CMC Senior Theses
The first part of this literature review goes over the biological and psychological aspects of stress. The cause of stress can be linked back to a primitive instinct known as “fight or flight.” The “fight or flight” instinct is triggered by several chemical reactions in the body starting from a signal from the amygdala to the sympathetic nervous system. Stress can also be categorized into internal and external stress. Further research links stress to sports. Many studies show that stress coping techniques such as meditation, self-talk, rituals, etc. are beneficial to athletes during competition. Suggested avenues of further research are …
Hooliganism And Supporter Violence: Examining The Rome, Lisbon And Athens Derbies, Joseph J. Mondello
Hooliganism And Supporter Violence: Examining The Rome, Lisbon And Athens Derbies, Joseph J. Mondello
CMC Senior Theses
The practice of Hooliganism, or violent and aggressive styles of support linked to one or more specific football club, first emerged in England in the 1960’s. A combination of mass media, films such as Green Street Hooligans, and increases in law enforcement enabled Hooliganism to spread all over Europe. This paper seeks to explain Hooligan cultures, how they emerge, their characteristics and the type of individual they attract. Furthermore, this paper examines the situational variables present on match-day that lead to supporter violence. Additionally, this paper aggregates numerous findings on crowd behavior and Hooliganism, and then applies them three case …
Energy And Economy: Recognizing High-Energy Modernity As A Historical Period, Thomas Love, Cindy Isenhour
Energy And Economy: Recognizing High-Energy Modernity As A Historical Period, Thomas Love, Cindy Isenhour
Faculty Publications
This introduction to Economic Anthropology’s special issue on “Energy and Economy” argues that we might find inspiration for a much more engaged and public anthropology in an unlikely place—19th century evolutionist thought. In addition to studying the particularities of energy transitions, which anthropology does so well, a more engaged anthropology might also broaden its temporal horizons to consider the nature of the future “stage” into which humanity is hurtling in an era of resource depletion and climate change. Net energy (EROEI), or the energy “surplus” on which we build and maintain our complex societal arrangements, is a key tool …
Androgyny/Hermaphroditism: Hebrew Bible, Jennifer J. Williams
Androgyny/Hermaphroditism: Hebrew Bible, Jennifer J. Williams
Faculty Publications
The Hebrew Bible lacks a term for androgyny or hermaphroditism. The term tumtumim, which identifies persons of indeterminate or “hidden” sex, appears later in rabbinic texts. Nevertheless, sexual fluidity, ambiguity, intersexed persons, and persons with a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics appear in the Genesis creation stories and prophetic texts. While gender transgression is relevant to the general discussion, this entry from The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible and Gender Studies: Oxford Biblical Studies Online focuses primarily on ancient understandings, namely those presented in the Hebrew Bible, of those of “both sexes.”

Service Learning Enhances Conceptual Learning In A Rn To Bsn Program, Henny Breen, Melissa Robinson
Faculty Publications
A qualitative study using transcript analysis was conducted to examine the effectiveness of service learning in enhancing conceptual learning in RN to BSN students. As part of their capstone course in an online program, students engaged in 64 hours of service learning in their local community. The transcripts of asynchronous discussions and journal entries formed the data for analysis. The findings illustrated that the student’s conceptual understanding was enhanced from the service learning experience. Further, the students demonstrated higher-level thinking by linking concepts that could be applied to nursing practice. Service learning reinforced the community-based philosophy of the School of …

Improving Primo Usability And Teachability With Help From The Users, Barbara Valentine, Beth West
Faculty & Staff Publications
In the aftermath of a consortium migration to a shared cloud-based resource management and discovery system, a small college library implemented a web usability test to uncover the kinds of difficulties students had with the new interface. Lessons learned from this study led to targeted changes, which simplified aspects of searching, but also enhanced the librarians’ ability to teach more effectively. The authors discuss the testing methods, results, and teaching opportunities, both realized and potential, which arose from implementing changes.

Linkages And Spillovers In Global Production Networks: Firm-Level Analysis Of The Czech Automotive Industry, Petr Pavlinek, Pavla Žížalová
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
The aim of this article is to analyze the linkages between and spillovers from foreign-owned (foreign) to domestic-owned (domestic) firms in the Czech automotive industry. Theoretically and conceptually, our research draws on two strands of literature: spillovers, linkages and effects of foreign direct investment on domestic firms and regional economic development; and literature on global production networks, global value chains and industrial upgrading. Empirical analysis is based upon unique data collected by the authors through a questionnaire completed by 317 foreign and domestic firms in 2009 and on-site interviews with 100 firms conducted between 2009 and 2011. Data analysis has …
