El Rol De Los Servicios Sociales En El Acompañamiento De Mujeres Durante El Proceso De Interrupción Legal Del Embarazo En Un Hospital Público En La Provincia De Buenos Aires / The Role Of Social Services In The Accompaniment Of Women During The Process Of Legally Terminating A Pregnancy In A Public Hospital In The Province Of Buenos Aires, Judy Rivière

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Challenging The Violence And Invisibility Against Women Of Color – A Marxist Imperative, Lilia D. Monzó, Peter Mclaren

Education Faculty Articles and Research

"We are heading into an era where unbridled greed, racism, sexism, and other forms of hate are, once again, unabashedly proclaimed to the world without remorse. This turn from the once negative association with racism and attempts to avoid being labeled racist has became increasingly evident in the U.S. since 2014, when, astoundingly, a string of White police killings of unarmed Black men went unpunished or unprosecuted (Monzó & McLaren, 2014). In some of these cases the police officers evidenced a complete lack of compassion for the men in their final seconds of life. National coverage of these events made …

Final Report: Eunis – Eurocris Joint Survey On Cris And Ir, Lígia Ribeiro, Pablo De Castro, Michele Mennielli Jan 2016

Final Report: Eunis – Eurocris Joint Survey On Cris And Ir, Lígia Ribeiro, Pablo De Castro, Michele Mennielli

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The rising strategic importance of Current Research Information Systems (CRISs) and Institutional Repositories (IRs) for higher education and research institutions relates to the need to foster research and innovation and to provide a faster and broader technology transfer to industry and society. These are critical factors for global competitiveness, and the increasing competition among institutions to increase and disseminate excellence in research is another area where these systems provide a key contribution. Additional important elements with a strong impact on such strategic evolution are the new policies on Open Access, National Research Assessment and Research Funding. It is indeed from …

Addressing Stereotype Threat Is Critical To Diversity And Inclusion In Organizational Psychology, Bettina Casad, William J. Bryant Jan 2016

Addressing Stereotype Threat Is Critical To Diversity And Inclusion In Organizational Psychology, Bettina Casad, William J. Bryant

Psychology Faculty Works

Recently researchers have debated the relevance of stereotype threat to the workplace. Critics have argued that stereotype threat is not relevant in high stakes testing such as in personnel selection. We and others argue that stereotype threat is highly relevant in personnel selection, but our review focused on underexplored areas including effects of stereotype threat beyond test performance and the application of brief, low-cost interventions in the workplace. Relevant to the workplace, stereotype threat can reduce domain identification, job engagement, career aspirations, and receptivity to feedback. Stereotype threat has consequences in other relevant domains including leadership, entrepreneurship, negotiations, and competitiveness. …

Evolution Of Neuroimaging Technology In The Modern Era, Robert H. Paul Jan 2016

Evolution Of Neuroimaging Technology In The Modern Era, Robert H. Paul

Psychology Faculty Works

Clinical applications in brain science have progressed at a glacial pace when compared to other medical disciplines. Treatments for most neurodegenerative brain diseases are limited, and cure strategies remain underdeveloped. Pressure to improve clinical outcomes in the neurological sciences is exacerbated by an aging population at risk for degenerative brain diseases. Fortunately, technical advances in the field of neuroimaging offer new promise, with enhanced characterization of microstructural anatomy, network connectivity, and functional biomarkers of health and disease. Articles highlighted in this issue describe cutting-edge applications targeting these outcomes using diffusion tensor imaging, diffusion-based tractography, and positron emission tomography. Finally, the …

Columbus Community Gardens, Amanda Rees, Bert Melix, Chuck Lawson, Cory Hart

Columbus Community Geography Center

This project involved the collection of data from each community garden site in Columbus/Phenix City community by Professor Amanda Rees and Bert Melix, geography student (Columbus State University). Melix completed the digital map using GIS that was then shared with graphic design Professor Chuck Lawson and his student Cory Hart (Chattahoochee Valley Community College) as they developed a quad fold map to hand out to folks involved in Georgia Organics events in Columbus, Georgia. Our community partner was Georgia Organics who provided a mini grant for Bert Melix to complete the data collection and GIS map production. This project was …

Columbus Community Geography Center

With the soft opening of Pasaquan, Marion County’s visionary art environment, in summer 2016, and its grand opening by Columbus State University in fall 2016, the Marion County Chamber of Commerce requested that the Columbus Community Geography Center partner to develop a heritage tour map of the county for welcome centers across the state. This small rural county of 8,700 residences, 60% white, 30% black and 7.5% Hispanic. One fifth of the population live below the poverty level. It recently lost several hundred jobs with the closure of the local chicken processing plant. Plans to launch a tourism program is …

Wire Netting Reduces African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Impact To Selected Trees In South Africa, Kelly Derham, Michelle Henley, Bruce A. Schulte Jan 2016

Wire Netting Reduces African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Impact To Selected Trees In South Africa, Kelly Derham, Michelle Henley, Bruce A. Schulte

Biology Faculty Publications

African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are ecosystem engineers in that they substantially alter the environment through their unique foraging and feeding habits. At high densities, elephants potentially have negative impacts on the environment, specifically for large trees. Because of this, recent increases of elephants in the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) on the western boundary of the Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa, have caused concern regarding the survival of several tree species. Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of wrapping protective wire netting around the trunk of the tree for preventing and reducing bark stripping, branch breaking, …

The Carnival Mirror And Institutional Forms Of Deviance: A Reflexive Paper Assignment, Jose A. Munoz Jan 2016

The Carnival Mirror And Institutional Forms Of Deviance: A Reflexive Paper Assignment, Jose A. Munoz

Sociology Faculty Publications

The reflexive paper assignment presented here calls on students to reflect on their own family and/or personal experiences in order to answer the question, “From where does the greatest harm arise?” In The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison: Ideology, Class and Criminal Justice, Reiman and Leighton (2010) make the case that the criminal justice system presents to us a carnival mirror-like image of what causes the greatest harm to society. The criminal justice system, through its policies and procedures, leads the public to conceive of a typical sort of crime committed by the typical criminal. The …

HIV and AIDS

The purpose of this study was to examine examples of task-shifting programs in Uganda with the aim of generating data that could inform the development of task-shifting policies, guidelines, and practices. The overall purpose of the study was to contribute to the growing knowledge base about task-shifting by describing the service delivery approaches of three purposively selected major AIDS service organizations (ASOs) in Uganda that have adopted task-shifting. The study showed that in the three ASOs, almost all key tasks in antiretroviral therapy (ART), including determining eligibility, initiating ART, and dispensing antiretrovirals, can be feasibly shifted to lower-level cadres or …

Gratitude And Mood: Do We Need To Tailor Gratitude Interventions For People With High Vs. Low Levels Of Dysphoria?, Dung Vu Hanh Pham

Psychology Honors Projects

Prior research has found that trait gratitude is closely associated with enhanced mental and physical wellbeing. Interventions that seek to increase gratitude, such as daily listing of what one is grateful for, have been shown to decrease depressive symptoms and to increase positive affect as well as life satisfaction. This study sought to examine whether tailoring specific gratitude interventions to people with high vs. low dysphoria, a form of subclinical depression, might produce additional benefits given the unique characteristics of each group. We also tested whether a cognitive or an affective mechanism better explains gratitude’s effect on wellbeing. Results showed …

Alzheimer's- The Cholinergic Hypothesis And Gene- Targeting Stem Cell Treatment, Richa Gautam, Emma Nichols Jan 2016

Alzheimer's- The Cholinergic Hypothesis And Gene- Targeting Stem Cell Treatment, Richa Gautam, Emma Nichols

Modern Psychological Studies

As the mean age of the world population rises and people's life expectancies increase, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease will increase and will pose a threat to society in terms of the people affected and the money used. Current therapies are not adequate in that they are unable to extend life beyond a few months. This review will both overview the predominant hypotheses about how to approach the treatment of Alzheimer's as well as discuss some of the treatments available and those in preclinical phases. Finally, we will discuss the ideas and recent research behind gene therapy and stem cell …

Musical Pop-Ups: Performances In Unexpected Places For National Poetry Month, 2015, Michael J. Duffy Iv

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations

Three faculty librarians, the communication coordinator, and the metadata and digital resources coordinator of the Western Michigan University Libraries arranged events for the celebration, including instrumental and vocal music performances. We aimed to include as many performers from as many units on campus as we could in order to increase the University Libraries’ visibility, and to make diverse campus units aware of the kinds of performances done in other parts of the University.

The musical performances were mostly informal performances that took place in unexpected venues, or what we called “pop-up” events, but we had a formal, concert-style musical performance …

Neurocognitive Implications Of Sport-Related Concussion In High School Athletes Over-Time, Evan Lee Smith Jan 2016

Neurocognitive Implications Of Sport-Related Concussion In High School Athletes Over-Time, Evan Lee Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The identification of sport-related concussion (mild traumatic brain injury [mTBI]), its neurocognitive sequelae, and subsequent management have become a top priority within a spectrum of research disciplines at the intersection of psychology and sports medicine. To properly understand the complex neurocognitive changes associated with sport-related concussion in high school age individuals, multiple aspects of the injury were explored including the psychobiological nature of the injury, diagnostic concerns, normative adolescent neurocognitive development and abnormal changes as a result of the injury, and risk for further injury. While a wealth of literature exists in these areas, one aspect in particular, neurocognitive changes …
