Acculturation Orientations Towards ‘Valued’ And ‘Devalued’ Immigrants In South Korea, Pascal Tisserant, Anne-Lorraine Wagner, Jaegon Jung, Richard Y. Bourhis

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This study, based on the Interactive Acculturation Model, investigates the acculturation orientations of undergraduates (n=279) in South Korea. Results show that Korean respondents considered South-East Asian immigrants to be less valued than Western immigrants. They were more welcoming towards ‘valued’ Western immigrants than they were towards ‘devalued’ South-East Asian immigrants. As in the case of undergraduates in North America & Europe, Korean undergraduates mainly endorsed integration and individualism towards both Western and South-East Asian immigrants, but they also strongly endorsed the segregationist orientations towards both ‘valued’ and ‘devalued’ immigrants reflecting the still contentious view of Korea as an immigration country.

The Effects Of Cognitive And Emotional Empathy On The Perception And Prejudice Towards Migrants: An Exploratory Study, Maisonneuve Christelle, Taillandier-Schmitt Anne Jan 2016

The Effects Of Cognitive And Emotional Empathy On The Perception And Prejudice Towards Migrants: An Exploratory Study, Maisonneuve Christelle, Taillandier-Schmitt Anne

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Improving intergroup attitudes and relationships have been largely studied. Empathy appears to play a mediational role between perspective taking and prejudices or attitudes towards out-groups (Baston et al., 1997; Finlay & Stephan, 2000; Vescio et al., 2003). The aim of this exploratory study is to examine how cognitive and emotional components of empathy (Jolliffe & & Farrington, 2006) were linked to the perception of immigrant targets who behave depending on the four acculturation strategies (integration, assimilation, separation and marginalization) as defined by Berry (1997). Participants first filled in a French version of the Basic Empathic Scale. Second, they read and …

Depressive Symptoms, Substance Use And Partner Violence Victimization Associated With Hiv Disclosure Among Men Who Have Sex With Men, Monique Brown, Julie M. Serovich, Judy A. Kimberly

Dean's Office Publications

HIV continues to disproportionately affect men who have sex with men (MSM). Depression and substance use have been shown to be risk factors of partner violence among male same-sex couples. However, research exploring the risk factors for partner violence victimization after HIV disclosure among MSM is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the association between depressive symptoms, substance use, and disclosure-associated verbal and/or physical violence from a partner among MSM. Data were obtained from 340 HIV-positive MSM. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the associations between Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression and substance use scores, and disclosure-associated …

Do Snap Recipients Get The Best Prices, Raymond March, Conrad Lyford, Carlos Carpio, Tullaya Boonsaeng Jan 2016

Do Snap Recipients Get The Best Prices, Raymond March, Conrad Lyford, Carlos Carpio, Tullaya Boonsaeng

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the relationship between SNAP participation and prices paid for food items. To test this relationship, we develop an expensiveness index following the method of Aguiar and Hurst (2007) and use the FoodAPS data set. Using both the ordinary least squares method and controlling for endogeneity using an instrumental variables approach, we found SNAP participation did not hold a statistically significant relationship with the prices paid for food items when we controlled for consumer behavior and food market variables. This suggests that SNAP participants are not systematically disadvantaged in their food purchases. Additional efforts to further educate SNAP …

Public Choice Lessons From The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter, Marta Podemska-Mikluch, Darwyyn Deyo, David Mitchell

Faculty Publications

J. K. Rowling’s series of books about the underage wizard Harry Potter is an effective tool for introducing students to the key concepts of public choice. By keeping political figures at the forefront of the story, Rowling encourages students to recognize the different incentives individuals face in markets versus politics. To illuminate the pedagogical potential of the series and to ease its adoption, we discuss a set of examples that best illustrate the key concepts of public choice. We also share a classroom exercise showcasing how the series can be used to promote active learning.

Prevention Strategies And Mental Health In Vietnam, Edward Cohen Jan 2016

Prevention Strategies And Mental Health In Vietnam, Edward Cohen

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the current state of mental health services in Vietnam and provides recommendations for improving the care of people with mental illness. Vietnam’s mental health problems are as prevalent as anywhere else in the world. The country has recently begun an initiative to reform mental health care by improving community-based services for people with serious mental illness. However, mental illness has not been a part of public discourse in Vietnam. There is little recognition of prevalent common mental illnesses (such as depression, anxiety and alcohol abuse) and the care of people with serious mental illnesses relies on either …

Regional Economic Development―A Survey Of Theories In The Past Two Centuries (1800-2000), Xiaohong Quan

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to survey the evolution of theories in the field of regional economic development in the past two centuries (1800-2000) before the new millennium. Theories from the ‘spacial’ dimension and from the ‘economic’ dimension are understood as the classical foundation of the field. Important theories are identified and discussed for regional economic development. Specifically, the topics examined here first center around the mechanisms behind regional economic growth, answering questions such as why growth happens in certain regions, why growth can shift to other places, and what factors or environments can foster growth in certain regions. …

Impact On Bus Ridership From Changes In A Route’S Span Of Service, Jacob Simmons, Peter Haas

Faculty Publications

Ridership response to changes in a bus route’s span of service—the start time of the first trip to the end time of the last trip each day—was examined specifically for hours that were not altered by a change in the span of service. Data were obtained for 39 routes from nine transit agencies in the western United States that experienced changes in the span of service without any other types of changes to enable the largest known analysis of such data from American transit systems. Results demonstrated that bus routes receiving an increase in the span of service experienced a …

Access To Recreational Open Space In Patterson, Ca: A Geospatial Analysis Utilizing Geographic Information Systems, Leanne S. Lynch Jan 2016

Access To Recreational Open Space In Patterson, Ca: A Geospatial Analysis Utilizing Geographic Information Systems, Leanne S. Lynch

Projects

Many cities throughout California have experienced land use shifts from prime agricultural land to developed industrial and residential areas without considering access to recreational open space. Access to recreation through open space or parks is beneficial for the health and well-being of the community while providing aesthetic value and potential preservation of local ecosystems. Since 2002 the City of Patterson, located in California’s Central Valley, has rezoned over 800 acres of agricultural land for urban and industrial use while developers reserved recreational open space (parkland) at locations inconvenient to existing neighborhoods. Although several acres of parkland have been added to …

Needs Assessment Of Culturally Relevant And Sensitive Domestic Violence Services For Native American Women In A Rural Northern California County, Noelle L. Danis

Projects

In this rural northern Californian county, there are four federally recognized tribes, as well as additional non-federally recognized tribes. This county is home to a single encompassing agency that assists those in need of domestic violence services. Indigenous people seeking services have little choice, therefore it is paramount that providers incorporate concepts such as historical trauma and assist those in need with culturally relevant and sensitive services.

A needs assessment was conducted, which was comprised of two distinct parts. The first, was a case study to collect and analyze data from a focus group assembled of Native American women, who …

The Endowment Effect: What Helps Us Improve Our Perspective Taking?, Amanda Traub Jan 2016

The Endowment Effect: What Helps Us Improve Our Perspective Taking?, Amanda Traub

Psychology Honors Papers

Two studies examine if people’s inability to anticipate the endowment effect is a result of failed perspective taking. The first study examined the effect of a financial incentive on people’s ability to anticipate the endowment effect, using 40 participants from psychology courses at Connecticut College. Analyses were conducted to test for egocentrism, and to determine how a financial incentive would affect people’s ability to anticipate the endowment effect. The results indicated that buyers trended toward being egocentric in that they underestimated the sellers’ average selling price (p=.073), and that a financial incentive was not effective at improving people’s ability to …

Background research for this study included a review of identity theory from Erik Erikson to postmodern thinkers, as well as the immigration patterns and historical-political context of Arab-Americans. Participants included 14 Arab-Americans from seven Arabic-speaking countries, five of whom were men and nine of whom were women, from …

College students today are graduating with more debt than ever before. As such, it is critical that our graduates are equipped with the right skills and frame of mind to manage their finances. This includes understanding their income, taxes, and expenses; managing debt; budgeting; saving; and retirement planning. Money management can be intimidating for anyone, regardless of background or education. While online resources are made available to our students, these resources are often overlooked, and do not necessarily set out to engage students or address the issues they may face in a convincing or compelling way. Most of the financial …

The VCU RamPantry: Sustainability project’s mission is to develop a comprehensive system to foster a sustainable food pantry model which will reduce food insecurity among VCU students. Food insecurity can affect anyone, whether they are an on-campus student who has run out of meal swipes or an off-campus student who is facing a financially challenging time. Food insecurity may cause anxiety, depression, poor judgement, and may lead to larger problems related to physical health due to lack of nutrition. All of these factors can negatively impact student retention. A sustainable food pantry can mitigate these risks by providing basic food …

The RAMSTRONG project’s mission is to create a mobile website accessible online and through the VCU Mobile app that provides VCU employees with user-friendly, accessible resources to support their holistic well-being. The RAMSTRONG project seeks to meet three basic needs. First, while VCU and the Greater Richmond area offer a plethora of resources to promote health, information about these resources is not readily accessible, and especially not accessible from one website or mobile app. RAMSTRONG aims to provide an accessible means for employees to learn about and take advantage of these resources. Second, while a growing body of scientific literature …

You come here for something more than schooling. You come here for deep education and deep education is about learning how to die so that you learn how to live because when you examine certain assumptions that you have, certain presuppositions that you’re holding on to, when you let them go, that’s a form of death. And there’s no growth, there’s no development, there’s no maturation without learning how to die and giving up certain dogma, giving up certain doctrine. - Cornel West, Ph.D., VCU Siegel Center, Fall 2015

GO Virginia is an economic development initiative that seeks to preempt the harsh effects of federal budget cuts on Virginia’s economy, which is overly dependent on public-sector jobs. It promotes private sector job growth and workforce development through the use of state-based grants to invest in regionally significant capital projects that call for collaboration between localities, businesses, and education. It is important to be intentional in pursuing GO Virginia’s goals, otherwise this legislation may only allocate grants to institutions, organizations, and localities that already have sizeable resources. A critical question rests on how to ensure that low-income and minority communities …
