Impact Of Irrigation Method On Water Use Efficiency And Productivity Of Fodder Crops In Nepal, Ajay K. Jha, Razan Malla, Mohan Sharma, Jeeban Panthi, Tarendra Lakhankar, Nir Y. Krakauer, Soni M. Pradhanang, Piyush Dahal, Madan Lall Shrestha

Publications and Research

Improved irrigation use efficiency is an important tool for intensifying and diversifying agriculture in Nepal, resulting in higher economic yield from irrigated farmlands with a minimum input of water. Research was conducted to evaluate the effect of irrigation method (furrow vs. drip) on the productivity of nutritious fodder species during off-monsoon dry periods in different elevation zones of central Nepal. A split-block factorial design was used. The factors considered were treatment location, fodder crop, and irrigation method. Commonly used local agronomical practices were followed in all respects except irrigation method. Results revealed that location effect was significant (p < 0.01) with highest fodder productivity seen for the middle elevation site, Syangja. Species effects were also significant, with teosinte (Euchlaena mexicana) having higher yield than cowpea (Vigna unguiculata). Irrigation method impacted green biomass yield (higher with furrow irrigation) but both methods yielded similar dry biomass, while water use was 73% less under drip irrigation. Our findings indicated that the controlled application of water through drip irrigation is able to produce acceptable yields of nutritionally dense fodder species during dry seasons, leading to more effective utilization and resource conservation of available land, fertilizer and water. Higher productivity of these nutritional fodders resulted in higher milk productivity for livestock smallholders. The ability to grow fodder crops year-round in lowland and hill regions of Nepal with limited water storages using low-cost, water-efficient drip irrigation may greatly increase livestock productivity and, hence, the economic security of smallholder farmers.

Public Finance And Tax Equity In The Arabian Gulf Monarchies, Timothy Mathews Jan 2016

Public Finance And Tax Equity In The Arabian Gulf Monarchies, Timothy Mathews

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This study examines notions of public finance equity in the six Arabian Gulf monarchies of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Because of unique characteristics of government expenditures and revenues in these monarchies, many of the standard concepts of public finance (such as the Benefits Principle, Ability-to-Pay Principle, Vertical Equity, and Horizontal Equity) do not provide relevant insights. Consequently, four innovative notions of equity are reviewed and discussed: Within Group Horizontal Equity; Within Group Vertical Equity; Favored Group Horizontal Equity; and Favored Group Vertical Equity. Finally, these four conceptions of equity are applied to a …

The Peer Network As A Context For The Socialization Of Academic Engagement, Linda Mary Newton-Curtis Jan 2016

The Peer Network As A Context For The Socialization Of Academic Engagement, Linda Mary Newton-Curtis

Dissertations and Theses

The school environment is one of the primary contexts for children's social, emotional and cognitive development. While teachers are likely to be primarily focused on students' motivation and learning, for adolescents, one of the most enjoyable and important aspects of school life is likely to be centered around the time spent interacting with peers. It is well recognized that peers socialize one another but although many studies have examined the influence of peers on adolescents' risky behaviors far fewer have focused on the influence peers may have on individuals' positive behaviors. As a result this study focuses on academic development …

A Model For Speech Processing In Second Language Listening Activities, Wafa Shahada Zoghbor Jan 2016

A Model For Speech Processing In Second Language Listening Activities, Wafa Shahada Zoghbor

All Works

Teachers' understanding of the process of speech perception could inform practice in listening classrooms. Catford (1950) developed a model for speech perception taking into account the influence of the acoustic features of the linguistic forms used by the speaker, whereby the listener 'identifies' and 'interprets' these linguistic forms based on the association between them and the context of speech. This paper critically reviews Catford's model and proposes an alternative one distinguishing between two levels of perceiving speech: word recognition and utterance comprehension. Smith and Nelson (1985) refer to these as 'intelligibility' and 'comprehensibility', respectively. The proposed model could inform classroom …

From Transaction To Interaction: Socio-Materiality, Reliability And Transparency In An Age Of "Unbound Documents", Christopher W. Colwell Jan 2016

From Transaction To Interaction: Socio-Materiality, Reliability And Transparency In An Age Of "Unbound Documents", Christopher W. Colwell

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Social media applications, such as Facebook, have been described as “documents without borders”. (Skare & Lund, 2014). In an Australian Government context these documents (which may also be records) exist outside the boundaries of the organisation to which they relate, and which created them. Unlike other documents in an organisational setting, they are “unbound” from the usual organisational processes of creation, management and control but still subject to relevant legislative and recordkeeping obligations (Hesling, 2014).

This paper explores initial themes from the first case study of a larger doctoral study into the perceptions of records in Australian Government agencies. Among …

Reconsidering Library Collections: Community Services As Documents, Deborah Turner Jan 2016

Reconsidering Library Collections: Community Services As Documents, Deborah Turner

Proceedings from the Document Academy

In recognition of on-going change in how information becomes available, this study focuses on urban public librarian practices for meeting information needs, especially those of users who prefer to talk when obtaining information. Interview and focus group data reveal how libraries meet those needs including through library collaborations with community service agencies. Analysis of that data makes it possible to note that librarians manage relations with these agencies similar to how they manage traditional library collections. A subsequent discussion considers how this observation impacts LIS education and current understanding of documents before concluding with recommendations for professional practice and for …

A Documentologic Approach Of Herbarium: Documentary Anabiosis And Philogenetic Classification, Viviane Couzinet

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The Francophone school of the document specify the important role of the user to qualified an object as document. Following the work of Paul Otlet and Suzanne Briet, Jean Meyriat have proposed a division between document by intention and document by attribution. These research are part of the development of the document science called Documentology. In this line and taking model on Botany the research presented here examines the herbaria as textual, iconic and physical documents in an evolutionary perspective. It defines the document dormancy as a latent state and documentary anabiosis as activation of objects that become documents. Botany …

Analyzing The Pvcs Documents: A Multimodal Rate-Based Approach To Understand Community’S Goals And Values, Anastasia Sergeeva, Bogdan Kirillov, Ekaterina Voronina

Proceedings from the Document Academy

A significant amount of modern professional communication takes place in the so-called Virtual Communities of Practice or Professional Virtual Communities (PVCs): social systems of individuals who use Information Technologies to mediate their relationships and facilitate knowledge exchange and generation. In current research we analyze one of the biggest Russian IT-PVCs, Habrahabr.ru. The community’s official goal is connecting the IT-specialists; communication takes form of users articles and comments; users can rate the articles, the comments and the other users themselves. Using the number of SNA instruments, community’s metadata, linguistics statistics and discourse analysis we show the structure of the community, main …

Becoming Citizens: Dialogical Document Work In The Classroom Of The People’S Home, Anna Hampson Lundh, Mats Dolatkhah Jan 2016

Becoming Citizens: Dialogical Document Work In The Classroom Of The People’S Home, Anna Hampson Lundh, Mats Dolatkhah

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, to analyse how a particular reading activity in a post-war Swedish comprehensive school, was part of the larger social and political project of the welfare state, and tied to the notion of good citizenship. Thereby, and secondly, the paper aims to illustrate how dialogical document theory enables the study of reading, and possibly other types of document work and practices. The analysis of a speech by a teacher about what can be learnt from a short story during a Swedish lesson in a primary school in 1968 illustrates how document work such …

Digital Engagement: Personality Is The Context Of The Text, Diane C. Spencer-Scarr Jan 2016

Digital Engagement: Personality Is The Context Of The Text, Diane C. Spencer-Scarr

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper examines digital-technology as a tool and an environment with the individuals’ personality at the intersection of the two: Its impact on social memory and the unbound document. With the ubiquitous embedding of digital networked technology in society and the emergence of the unbounded document, humans increasingly obtain information by grasping snippets of decontextualized text sourced through non-human entities from globally dispersed databases that have stripped out context. Then in a Kafkian way humans’ have to build from the middle to make sense of the information snippets. The paper explores how the inherent nature of the individual can be …

Familiar Categories And Documentary Forms: Readers’ Perspectives, Amanda Cossham Jan 2016

Familiar Categories And Documentary Forms: Readers’ Perspectives, Amanda Cossham

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper presents an evaluation of the ways in which three different groups of readers (recordkeepers, teachers and secondary school students) categorise documents. This is used to show how they understand documents, documentary forms and genre. Drawing on a card sorting activity conducted around a set of cards of documents related to The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, the paper discusses the significance of familiar categories as cultural markers (closely linked to particular rhetorical genres). It considers the impact of domain knowledge on the process of sorting and naming of categories, and compares the approaches taken by participants with those of …

The Role Of The Libraries In The Norwegianization Policy 1880-1905, Geir Grenersen Jan 2016

The Role Of The Libraries In The Norwegianization Policy 1880-1905, Geir Grenersen

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper discusses the role of libraries in the implementation of the Norwegianization policy towards the Sámi and Kven minorities in Norway. This question has not been written about or debated in the library history of Norway. The hypothesis is that the libraries had a dual function: they were both seen as an instrument of Norwegianization by the government, but were simultaneously places where modern ideas about democracy, equality and emancipation were made accessible to the minorities. Ironically, the schooling authorities’ efforts to learn the Sámi and Kven to read and write Norwegian, contributed to the rise of a reading …

Public Libraries Worked In The Tohoku Mega-Disaster, Andreas Vårheim Jan 2016

Public Libraries Worked In The Tohoku Mega-Disaster, Andreas Vårheim

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Public libraries play important roles during disaster recovery, even when other government actors fail. Libraries are centers of local information and have local knowledge. Patrons, as well as government agencies and NGOs, benefit from public libraries’ local grounding.

Along with their local communities, many public libraries in the Tohoku region of Japan were severely damaged in the earthquake and tsunami of 3.11.2011. The nuclear accident in Fukushima following the tsunami meant that libraries in the evacuated zone were abandoned.

Disaster recovery is difficult to handle and few success stories are found. Studies show that where other public services have failed, …

For Every Document, A Person: A Co-Created View Of Documents, Tim Gorichanaz Jan 2016

For Every Document, A Person: A Co-Created View Of Documents, Tim Gorichanaz

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The concept of document is common and fundamental to numerous information-related disciplines. Perhaps because of this, many definitions of document have been proposed. A conceptual analysis reveals that all these definitions, though they vary in important ways, have a common feature that has not yet been stated explicitly: Humans are vital to documents. That is, a human being is inextricable from the very notion of document. This leads to a further conceptualization of documents as psycho-physical or socio-physical entities that are co-created. Consequently, all documents must be viewed as idiosyncratic and context-bound. Further ramifications for information research, ethics and practice …

Shannon Goes To The Museum: Drawing Lines Across Boundaries, Kiersten F. Latham, Jodi Kearns

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The DOCAM’15 theme called for an examination of the challenges ahead with our understanding of documents in a continuously changing information landscape. One such challenge has been to find specific intersecting areas of the information sciences on which authors from different disciplines might collaborate. We take ourselves as one such case study. One of us works in information science and often thinks about applications of Information Theory. One of us works on developing models for museum practice, that is, theory upon which museum work might become more intentional and robust. Thinking about Documents Unbounded has led us to align some …

Two King Lears: The Meaning Potentials Of Writing And Speech For Talking Books, Anna Hampson Lundh, Bradley Smith Jan 2016

Two King Lears: The Meaning Potentials Of Writing And Speech For Talking Books, Anna Hampson Lundh, Bradley Smith

Proceedings from the Document Academy

The talking book is a type of assistive technology where original print text is audio recorded and marked-up in order to make it accessible for people with print-disabilities, such as visual impairments or dyslexia. In this pilot study, we explore the implications of remediating a written text, the script of Shakespeare’s King Lear, into spoken text. We compare two readings of the play: a talking book version; and a commercial audiobook recording. We examine intonation choices in an excerpt from the play in the two readings. The analysis shows significant variation in choices of intonation, and thus the meanings …

Documenting Spatial And Temporal Information For Heritage Preservation: A Case Study Of Sri Lanka, Chiranthi Wijesundara, Shigeo Sugimoto, Bhuva Narayan Jan 2016

Documenting Spatial And Temporal Information For Heritage Preservation: A Case Study Of Sri Lanka, Chiranthi Wijesundara, Shigeo Sugimoto, Bhuva Narayan

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Cultural Heritage Properties (CHPs) around the world have been altered or destroyed due to various unforeseen factors, both natural and human-made. Consequently, as a preparedness approach around such disasters, documenting the CHPs are crucial to any efforts to repair, rebuild or relocate them. With advancements in digital technologies, integrating them into our documentation to improve heritage preservation has become a common approach. Here the main concern is on Spatial and Temporal (ST) information and the paper proposes that with recent developments in the field of Geospatial technologies, heritage preservation can be enhanced and improved by documenting ST information parallel to …

From Object To Mediator: The Agency Of Documents, Sally Irvine-Smith Jan 2016

From Object To Mediator: The Agency Of Documents, Sally Irvine-Smith

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper takes as a starting point one particular development in social theory – the concept of mediation – and applies it to the document. Central to this discussion is a conceptualisation of documents as objects, albeit one which fails if we assume the document to be nothing more than a receptacle of content. Drawing from contemporary social theories which give mediating objects a pivotal role in human affairs, many researchers find that viewing documents as mediators allows us to concentrate on function over content. Indeed, evidence indicates that viewing documents as mediating objects is well accepted and largely unproblematic. …

Using Heider’S Epistemology Of Thing And Medium For Unpacking The Conception Of Documents: Gantt Charts And Boundary Objects, Sebastian K. Boell, Florian Hoof Jan 2016

Using Heider’S Epistemology Of Thing And Medium For Unpacking The Conception Of Documents: Gantt Charts And Boundary Objects, Sebastian K. Boell, Florian Hoof

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Documents play a central role for many organizational processes. Current conceptualizations of documents predominantly engage with documents in two different ways. One sees documents as things with specific properties, and a second sees documents as medium enabling communication across different groups of actors. What is currently not well understood is how documents are perceived either as thing or as medium. This chapter engages with this issue by drawing from Fritz Heider’s epistemology of thing and medium, a concept stemming from social and media theory. According to Heider things are uniform and medium are multiform. Applying this concept to documents we …

Wikia: Between Documentary Simulacra And Documented Fictions, Caroline Courbières, Sabine Roux Jan 2016

Wikia: Between Documentary Simulacra And Documented Fictions, Caroline Courbières, Sabine Roux

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Wikis are digital community spaces that have attracted high traffic but virtually no study as socio-communicational platforms. These platforms offer individuals the possibility of engaging in unique writing activities by defining a distinct material configuration and imposing a protocol of enunciation. Wikis are platforms developed through the contributions of anyone, and constitute collaborative encyclopedias dedicated to a cultural topic. This article more specifically examines the Harry Potter Wiki, which is devoted to the literary universe of J.K. Rowling. Our semio-communicational analysis concerns the structure, the authors and the contents of the French and Anglo-Saxon versions of this wiki. First we …

The Becoming Of Human Rights Documents: An Exploration Of A Social Media Campaign, Hilary Yerbury, Ahmed Shahid Jan 2016

The Becoming Of Human Rights Documents: An Exploration Of A Social Media Campaign, Hilary Yerbury, Ahmed Shahid

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This study explores the social media campaign related to the disappearance of a journalist in the Maldives in August 2014. At a simple level, this study asks whether the Facebook and Twitter hashtag postings meet the standards of a human rights document. At a more complex level, using Genette’s concept of transtextuality, it explores the relationships between the social media campaign and its relationships to statements made by human rights NGOs, by UN agencies and in foreign parliaments. Although the social media campaign does not meets the standards of a human rights document, contributions from other agencies would unquestionably be …
