The Mysterious Case Of The Islamic State Organization (Iso) Smiling Martyr--Solved, Paul Kamolnick Jan 2016

The Mysterious Case Of The Islamic State Organization (Iso) Smiling Martyr--Solved, Paul Kamolnick

ETSU Faculty Works

Excerpt: For a mere Muslim mortal, Allah’s granting of martyrdom (Shahada) is the pinnacle of spiritual achievement. The martyr (Shahid) is granted unique privileges among which are the right to bypass the moral interrogation meted out to determine after death whether one is spiritually fit; the complete freedom from all anguish, pain, and suffering caused by one’s wounds as one immediately traverses into the highest of seven heavens; the right to intercede and request divine favors on behalf of seventy of one’s loved one’s; the enjoyment of exclusive sexual privileges with seventy-two virgins; and finally, …

Pakistan’S Daunting Deficits, Ishrat Husain Dr. Jan 2016

Pakistan’S Daunting Deficits, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Problems in the short term that affect day-to-day life are quite naturally given centre stage by both policymakers and the government’s critics. How much fiscal deficit is real, how much contrived? What has gone into computing the rate of inflation? What is the composition of foreign exchange reserves in terms of borrowed money and own money? These are pertinent questions that need to be raised. The government of the day has to answer these questions and satisfy its critics. But this excessive preoccupation with short-term issues leads to the neglect of long-term issues that responsible governments must address. It is …

The Rams Move On, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The City of Angels, Los Angeles, the second largest city in the United States, the second largest television market, the city of cars and air pollution, the city waiting for the next big earthquake, etc. etc. etc. It is a city that has not had a team in the National Football League for over twenty years. It is remarkable that the so-called New National Pastime had no presence in LA for two decades and still claimed this high position in American sport.

Review Of Our Children And Other Animals, Corey L. Wrenn

Between the Species

Cole and Stewart’s 2014 release, Our Children and Other Animals: The Cultural Construction of Human-Animal Relations in Childhood, offers an important sociological contribution to liberatory vegan research. The book's primary value is its critical examination of childhood socialization processes that habituate humans to speciesism through the institutions of family, education, and mass media.

Assessing Travel Plans For Residential Developments, Geoff Rose Jan 2016

Assessing Travel Plans For Residential Developments, Geoff Rose

PSU Transportation Seminars

A ‘travel plan’ is a travel demand management strategy that contains a package of site-specific measures designed to manage car use and encourage the use of more sustainable transport modes. Much of the existing literature on travel plans focuses on their application in workplaces and schools. Travel plans can be required for new residential developments as part of the land use planning and approvals process. However, there is limited understanding of the extent to which they have influenced travel behaviour. This presentation focuses on the assessment of travel plans developed for new residential apartment developments in Melbourne, Australia. Consideration is …

The Grovecrest Project: Analyzing Sociable Behavior In Children With Language Impairment Following A Social Understanding Intervention, Maille Coombs, Martin Fujiki Jan 2016

The Grovecrest Project: Analyzing Sociable Behavior In Children With Language Impairment Following A Social Understanding Intervention, Maille Coombs, Martin Fujiki

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The link between social communication and Language Impairment (LI) is an emerging topic in the field of speech pathology. It is known that children with LI struggle to produce and comprehend language, but it has recently been shown that these children also have notable difficulty communicating and interacting appropriately in social situations. A number of recent studies have documented that children with LI have deficits in emotion understanding (Fujiki, Spackman, Brinton & Illig, 2008). Children with LI struggle with affective theory of mind, recognizing and labeling facial expressions, and understanding emotion through prosody changes (Delaunay-el Allam, Guidetti, Chaix & Reilly, …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This study examines the impact on student performance after interactive and non-interactive tutorials using a 2 × 2 treatment-control design. In an undergraduate management course, a control group watched a video tutorial while the treatment group received the same content using a dynamic tutorial. Both groups received the same quiz questions. Using effect size to determine magnitude of change, it was found that those in the treatment condition performed better than those in the control condition. Students were able to take the quiz up to two times. When examining for change in performance from attempt one to attempt two, the …

The purpose of the study was to learn more about Millennial Generation students’ behaviors and perceptions regarding their classroom uses of digital devices for non-class purposes. The survey included 675 respondents in 26 states. Respondents spent an average of 20.9% of class time using a digital device for non-class purposes. The average respondent used a digital device 11.43 times for non-class purposes during a typical school day in 2015 compared to 10.93 times in 2013. A significant feature of …

Strength-Based Assessment For Children With Autism And Related Disabilities In Bosnia, Mckenzie May, Blake Hansen Jan 2016

Strength-Based Assessment For Children With Autism And Related Disabilities In Bosnia, Mckenzie May, Blake Hansen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Bosnia was the center of conflict during the war in Yugoslavia from April 1992 to December 1995. In post-war Bosnia, where there are limited resources, families of children with special needs bare the burden of care on their own. Caring for a child with significant disabilities on a daily basis places immense pressure on Bosnian families (Hastie, 1997). Steiner points out, “For parents of children with autism, identifying positive characteristics of the child and the relationship may be particularly beneficial because the stressors associated with the disability are likely to be chronic, and cannot be easily mastered.” (Steiner, 2010)

Research Brief: "Race Relations Within The Us Military", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This research examines minority representation within the military, as well as analyzing racial bias incidents and institutional racism within the system. The study found that minority service members deployed in discriminatory environments were at an increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder, and that new policies should review systems for filing racial discrimination complaints. For future research in this field, studies should include more research to identify the means by which discrimination occurs and might be reduced.

Plant Microfossils Recovered From Dental Calculus At Casas Grandes, Mexico, Daniel King, Michael T. Searcy, Kyle Waller

Faculty Publications

Microfossil analysis is a technique used to better understand prehistoric diets. As part of a larger multinational project, we gathered and analyzed 112 samples of dental calculus (fossilized plaque) from human remains discovered at Paquimé and other sites in the Casas Grandes river valley to identify various microfossils still present in the silica matrix. With this information, we are able to better understand the flora present during ancient times and how it was used (food, processing, etc.).

Examining Gender Specific Treatment Programs In Women's Prisons, Marieta Ilieva-Petkova Jan 2016

Examining Gender Specific Treatment Programs In Women's Prisons, Marieta Ilieva-Petkova

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The female offender population has been the fastest growing segment of the correctional population. Historically, victimization and trauma are highly correlated with substance abuse and dependency that are known to have a significant impact on females' pathway toward criminal lifestyle, incarceration, relapse, and recidivism. Due to feminists' research, today we know that females offenders' pathways toward substance abuse, criminal behavior, and recidivism differ from those of males. As a result, a discussion about the development and implementation of gender-specific substance abuse treatment programs has been initiated. The purpose of this study is to discover if research recommendations proposed, have been …

Uploading Records To The Coe Database: Easy As 1,2,3!, Sandra Mcaninch, Julene L. Jones, Mary Clark

Library Presentations

As part of the Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP), two pieces of software were developed to support the collection development activities of FDLP libraries in the Southeast. Most are very familiar with the ASERL Disposition Database, but some may have forgotten its quiet counter-part, the ASERL COE Database. This database is comprised of brief cataloging records that indicate holdings for all Center of Excellence (COE) libraries (and other contributing depository libraries) in the Southeast and serves as a tool for analyzing the completeness of COE collection(s) and to identify gaps.

To create a database that is as comprehensive as possible, …
