Who, Why, And How?: Creating A Political Leader In China, Thomas Rebman Mar 2016

Who, Why, And How?: Creating A Political Leader In China, Thomas Rebman

2016 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

China holds a complex system of rules, regulations and policies that dictate how and who is eligible for leadership roles or government office. In reading the explicit policies that dictate the political system, there are examples of both direct election and promotions from within. The election rules show the principles of organization that have developed to organize the world's largest country into local and administrative areas. Looking at specific examples of individual politicians demonstrates a trend towards appointing wealthy economic players to positions reserved previously for Communist Party bureaucrats. Amidst a larger backdrop of cultural beliefs and social practices, the …

Identifying Interventions To Address Triggers Of Decline In Vulnerable Older Adults, Maria Teresa Brown, Kara Williams Mar 2016

Identifying Interventions To Address Triggers Of Decline In Vulnerable Older Adults, Maria Teresa Brown, Kara Williams

Aging Studies Institute

The changing landscape of health and healthcare in the United States continues to highlight certain limitations in the ability to understand the needs of vulnerable populations and provide adequate services. One of the challenges faced by researchers and service providers interested in the health and well-being of older adults is the absence of universal definitions of “vulnerability” or “frailty.” As a funder in the aging sector, in 2014 the Health Foundation for Western and Central New York (the Foundation) set out to identify working definitions to guide their work and to develop a conceptual model identifying factors with the potential …

Does Grandparental Help Mediate The Relationship Between Kin Presence And Fertility?, Kristin Snopkowski, Rebecca Sear Mar 2016

Does Grandparental Help Mediate The Relationship Between Kin Presence And Fertility?, Kristin Snopkowski, Rebecca Sear

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

BACKGROUND

Previous research suggests that kin availability may be correlated with reproductive outcomes, but it is not clear that a causal relationship underlies these findings. Further, there is substantial variation in how kin availability is measured.

OBJECTIVE

We attempt to identify whether different measures of kin availability influence how kin affect reproductive outcomes and whether the effect of kin on reproductive outcomes is driven by the help that they provide.

METHODS

Using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (1993, 1997, 2000, 2007), we compare the survival of parents and parents-in-law, their co-residence, geographic proximity, contact frequency, and helping behavior …

"Like Drinking Water Out Of A Fire Hydrant" Medical Education As Transformation: A Naturalistic Inquiry Into The Physician Assistant Student Experience, Patricia Kenney-Moore Mar 2016

"Like Drinking Water Out Of A Fire Hydrant" Medical Education As Transformation: A Naturalistic Inquiry Into The Physician Assistant Student Experience, Patricia Kenney-Moore

Dissertations and Theses

Physician assistants are medical professionals educated in an allopathic medical education model in the United States. In order to successfully matriculate, educate and graduate safe and effective health care providers in a 2-year time frame, the 4-year M.D. curriculum has been abbreviated and condensed leading to an intense, full-time cohort educational experience that taxes physician assistant students to their limits. The demanding workload can lead to fluctuations in mood and morale along with increased levels of psychological distress. This dissertation explores this under examined student experience by first introducing the physician assistant profession and the process by which it educates …

Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Attention Strongly Modulates Reliability Of Neural Responses To Naturalistic Narrative Stimuli, Jason J. Ki, Simon P. Kelly, Lucas C. Parra Mar 2016

Attention Strongly Modulates Reliability Of Neural Responses To Naturalistic Narrative Stimuli, Jason J. Ki, Simon P. Kelly, Lucas C. Parra

Publications and Research

Attentional engagement is a major determinant of how effectively we gather information through our senses. Alongside the sheer growth in the amount and variety of information content that we are presented with through modern media, there is increased variability in the degree to which we “absorb” that information. Traditional research on attention has illuminated the basic principles of sensory selection to isolated features or locations, but it provides little insight into the neural underpinnings of our attentional engagement with modern naturalistic content. Here, we show inhumansubjects that the reliability of an individual’s neural responses with respect to a larger group …

The Effect Of Relational And Interactive Aspects Of Parasocial Experiences On Attitudes And Message Resistance, Riva Tukachinsky, Angeline Sangalang Mar 2016

The Effect Of Relational And Interactive Aspects Of Parasocial Experiences On Attitudes And Message Resistance, Riva Tukachinsky, Angeline Sangalang

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

This study examines direct and interaction effects of parasocial interactions (PSIs) and relationships (PSRs) on message resistance (reactance and counterarguing) and message-consistent attitudes. PSI involves the give-and-take within the media encounter, whereas PSR entails the relational bonding with the media figure that continues to exist outside the context of any particular media exposure. A 2 (high/low PSI) × 2 (high/low PSR) experiment revealed that PSI (but not PSR) can increase message resistance, particularly when PSR is low. No significant effects of PSR/PSI on attitudes were found. The study suggests that, contrary to past theorization, PSIs may facilitate, rather than reduce, …

Censorship Is Not All Bad, Barry Jason Mauer Mar 2016

Censorship Is Not All Bad, Barry Jason Mauer

UCF Forum

Censorship is not all bad! Free-speech idealists argue that the solution to bad speech (misinformation, lies, abusive language, etc.) is not censorship but more speech. But bad speech can, and often does, drown out the good.

Does The Early Bird Catch The Worm Or A Lower Gpa? Evidence From A Liberal Arts College, Timothy M. Diette, Manu Raghav Mar 2016

Does The Early Bird Catch The Worm Or A Lower Gpa? Evidence From A Liberal Arts College, Timothy M. Diette, Manu Raghav

School of Business and Leadership Working Papers

Colleges and universities with capacity constraints like to offer early morning classes to maximize the use of classrooms. Moreover, evenings are often reserved for extra-curricular activities. However, research from psychology has shown that a teenager’s mind benefits from additional sleep during early morning hours. We use data from a selective liberal arts college that assigns students randomly to different sections of the same course. This creates a natural experiment. Our paper shows that after controlling for other factors, students in early morning sections earn lower grades than students in sections of the same course offered later in the day. The …

The Path To Violent Behavior: The Harmful Aftermath Of Childhood Trauma, Nicholas Michael Perez Mar 2016

The Path To Violent Behavior: The Harmful Aftermath Of Childhood Trauma, Nicholas Michael Perez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Adverse childhood experiences can lead to a number of harmful outcomes throughout an individual’s life, ranging from medical problems to criminal behavior. These traumatic experiences, comprised of different forms of maltreatment and dysfunctional household environments, can affect the development of a child in a variety of different ways. The multitude of developmental changes can produce compounding harmful effects on the child’s life and lead to acutely maladaptive outcomes. Under the perspective of developmental psychopathology, the ever-changing biological, psychological, and social dynamics of children who experience trauma can contribute to deficiencies in all aspects of their subsequent development. Each of these …

The Role Of Translation In The Nobel Prize In Literature : A Case Study Of Howard Goldblatt's Translations Of Mo Yan's Works, Yau Wun Yim Mar 2016

The Role Of Translation In The Nobel Prize In Literature : A Case Study Of Howard Goldblatt's Translations Of Mo Yan's Works, Yau Wun Yim

Lingnan Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of the translator and translation in the Nobel Prize in Literature through an illustration of the case of Howard Goldblatt’s translations of Mo Yan’s works.

As the most significant international literary prize, the Nobel Prize in Literature is well discussed in media. However, insufficiently detailed attention has been given to the role of translation in the Prize. In many cases, the works that the Nobel judges evaluate are in fact translations, not the prize winner’s own words. Despite the importance of translation in the selection process, no research has ever …
