Jesus Wouldn’T Mow, He’D Grow: Transforming Congregations, Lawns, And Food Security In Linn County, Ia, Juliette Crellin May 2016

Jesus Wouldn’T Mow, He’D Grow: Transforming Congregations, Lawns, And Food Security In Linn County, Ia, Juliette Crellin

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This study looks at religious organizations, lawns, and food insecurity in Linn County, and seeks to evaluate a hypothesis set forth by the founder of a farming nonprofit in the county. The Kendrick Hypothesis states that Linn County congregations could grow enough food on their lawns to eliminate food insecurity in the region. The study assesses this hypothesis using a yield analysis and survey of local religious leaders. While the study found that full participation in a congregation garden program could produce enough yield to significantly impact the county’s food insecurity, the results do not support the Kendrick Hypothesis. The …

Abortion, Teen Pregnancy, And Feminism: Finding Women-Centric Solutions For Reproductive Justice, Jessica Faunce

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This two-part project seeks to understand, discuss, and address issues surrounding some of the most contentious debates in the United States: unplanned pregnancy and abortion. The first part of the project looks at the pro-life feminist movement’s agenda and ideals through comprehensive interviews with nine self-proclaimed pro-life feminists. The goal of this research is to gain an understanding of a women-centric opposition to abortion and to reflect on possible solutions that would benefit women and gain support from both pro-life and pro-choice advocates. Taking into account the information gathered through qualitative research on pro-life feminism, the second part of this …

Completing The Puzzle: Exploring Possible Antecedents To Rape Myth Acceptance, Skye A. Geeslin May 2016

Completing The Puzzle: Exploring Possible Antecedents To Rape Myth Acceptance, Skye A. Geeslin

Theses and Dissertations

Rape myths are commonly accepted, but usually false, attitudes and beliefs about the act of rape, the perpetrators, and most often the victims (Aronowitz, Lambert, & Davidoff, 2012). Studies have shown that the endorsement of rape myth attitudes influences not only the likelihood of a sexual assault occurring, but also whether or not the incident is reported, and how the victims view themselves and their experiences afterwards (Burnett et ah, 2009). The present study surveyed college students to assess their levels of social competence, semantic knowledge of sex, bystander attitudes, and rape myth acceptance (RMA). The purpose of this study …

Female Farming Systems, Elizabeth Ransom, Wynne Wright, Carmen Bain May 2016

Female Farming Systems, Elizabeth Ransom, Wynne Wright, Carmen Bain

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Female farming systems draws attention to women's (re)productive roles in agriculture, with particular attention to questions of power, equity, and empowerment. Female farming systems as an organizing concept highlights what was a surprisingly neglected field of study until the 1970s and provides insights into the gendered nature of agriculture. In the past and the present the term “farmer” presumes a male identity. Globally, women have often been marginalized from farming by denying them access to the material resources needed for success such as land, labor, and capital. Due to a variety of reasons there is a feminization of agriculture underway, …

A Vision-Based Bee Counting Algorithm For Electronic Monitoring Of Langsthroth Beehives, Sai Kiran Reka May 2016

A Vision-Based Bee Counting Algorithm For Electronic Monitoring Of Langsthroth Beehives, Sai Kiran Reka

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Forager traffic is the number of bees entering or exiting the bee hive over a given period of time. To estimate forager traffic, beekeepers typically take a stopwatch and count the number of bees manually over a set period of time. Forager traffic is an important health indicator of the hive. Sudden changes in forager traffic levels show that there may be an anomaly inside the hive or in the environment. There have been several attempts to automate the estimation of forager traffic in Langsthroth hives with custombuilt hardware devices. In this thesis, we argue that bee counting can be …

Effects Of Talker Variability On Spectral Contrast Effects., Asim Mohiuddin May 2016

Effects Of Talker Variability On Spectral Contrast Effects., Asim Mohiuddin

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Spectral contrast effects are context-dependent effects that influence the way we perceive certain sounds. Evidence of these effects can be seen in experiments where a precursor sound (e.g. a sentence) is followed by a target vowel sound (like /ɪ/ as in "bit" or /ɛ/ as in "bet"). If the precursor's frequency was emphasized in areas more consistent with the frequency of /ɛ/, listeners tend to perceive the target sound to be the opposite i.e. /ɪ/. A recent study shows using sentence precursors from 200 different talkers diminishes these effects questioning previous claims that talker variability has no influence on spectral …

From The Classical School To Today: The Evolution Of Stagnation Theories, Francis J. Lukacovic Ii

Applied Economics Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to study the theory of secular stagnation, which was made famous by the American Keynesian economist Alvin Hansen in his book Full Recovery or Stagnation. The theory of secular stagnation has reappeared in economic circles today due to recent economic conditions since the financial crisis of 2007-2008. The thesis will analyze the history of the stagnation theory dating back to Classical economists in the 19th century. The concept of a stagnating economy has been talked about for centuries with many economists adding important thoughts. Furthermore, the thesis will address the current questions and …

When Ink Turned Into Bullets: The Effect Of The Press In Buffalo, New York And The Nation Along With Its Role In Igniting A Civil War, Nicole C. Kondziela May 2016

When Ink Turned Into Bullets: The Effect Of The Press In Buffalo, New York And The Nation Along With Its Role In Igniting A Civil War, Nicole C. Kondziela

History Theses

The American Civil War was a multi-faceted conflict: North versus South, states’ rights versus federal law, slavery versus abolition. Due to increasing and constant advancements in technology, this was the first war in American history that developed in full view of the public through newspapers. The Industrial Revolution and capitalism allowed the press to evolve into rich and powerful soap boxes for political bosses and editors alike to voice their opinions far beyond the village square. Unbeknownst to much of the public at the time, the Union had been at the mercy of newspaper editors and politicians in a grand …

Perceptions Of University Community Members Regarding Alcohol Restriction Policies, Katherine A. Meeker May 2016

Perceptions Of University Community Members Regarding Alcohol Restriction Policies, Katherine A. Meeker

Honors Theses

There has been a growing concern regarding sexual assaults on college and university campuses. The push to decrease sexual assaults has lead researchers and universities to examine alcohol abuse as a contributing factor. Many colleges and universities have developed new policies for alcohol restriction, but they have done so without taking into consideration the views of the campus community. In the absence of collaboration between the campus community and university administration, such policies will likely be ineffective. This study explores the beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes of the campus community regarding alcohol restriction policies at The University of Southern Mississippi.

Ceramic Diversity And Its Relation To Access To Market For Slaves On A Plantation, Rebecca L. Aucoin May 2016

Ceramic Diversity And Its Relation To Access To Market For Slaves On A Plantation, Rebecca L. Aucoin

Honors Theses

A study of the diversity of ceramics found on a plantation at a slave house in relation to the access to market that slave had could lead to a better understanding of the life and culture of slaves. A high diversity of ceramics at sites might indicate slaves purchased their own ceramics. At a number of sites located in the Natchez District in Mississippi, a study was conducted to identify samples of ceramic sherds to determine if slaves were able to purchase their own dish ware. The results of the study indicated that slaves at Mount Locust Plantation likely had …

America's Dangerous Political Polarization And Moderate Stigma, Dan Sicorsky May 2016

America's Dangerous Political Polarization And Moderate Stigma, Dan Sicorsky

Washington University Undergraduate Law Review

This paper addresses the underlying causes of polarization and moderate stigma, and proposes methods for increasing the number of nonpartisan politicians. A reemergence of moderate, non-binary voices in representative bodies can remedy Washington's historic unproductiveness and voting center's shameful desertedness. If we do not alter the ways we think, act, and vote, the two aisles will keep bloodily drifting apart, voting will end up an antiquated tradition, and Washington will cement its image as the battleground of unproductiveness.

Educar A Niñas Y Niños De Clase Media En Santiago: Capital Cultural Y Segregación Socioterritorial En La Formación De Mercados Locales De Educación, Joel Stillerman

Peer Reviewed Articles

Many researchers have studied residential and educational segregation processes without considering the relationship between them. This article explores how middle class parents select schools in the municipalities of Ñuñoa and La Florida (Santiago, Chile). Ñuñoa is an upper middle-class municipality with a large number of elite private schools; while La Florida has a newer middle class, a higher poverty rate, and many charter schools. Based on in-depth interviews with 77 parents, this article finds that in Ñuñoa parents choose elite private schools and reject charter or public schools. In contrast, parents in La Florida select charter schools as a way …

Rat Behavioral Discrimination Of Temporal Cues In Species-Specific Vocalization, Kevin Mathews Tharakan May 2016

Rat Behavioral Discrimination Of Temporal Cues In Species-Specific Vocalization, Kevin Mathews Tharakan

Honors Scholar Theses

Current behavioral and neurophysiologic studies propose that many animals can detect and discriminate the invariant statistics found in natural vocalization (Geffen et. al., 2011; Rodriguez et al., 2010). However, according to current research the neuronal mechanisms underlying the sound discrimination process is still unclear. While numerous auditory statistics have been manipulated, none has varied the temporal and tonal frequency cues independently in their synthetic call sequences, thus it is still uncertain whether rats rely on temporal cues in the sound envelope for communication.

The aim of this research is to determine whether or not rats rely on temporal cues in …

Protective Sex: How Being In-Tune With Sexuality Protects Young Women, Catherine Elinor Ertel Baggett May 2016

Protective Sex: How Being In-Tune With Sexuality Protects Young Women, Catherine Elinor Ertel Baggett

Social Work Theses - Archive

Sexuality has been a widely studied topic which has produced a diverse body of literature covering many different perspectives. However, despite the wealth of knowledge on the topic of sexuality, society maintains a strong taboo on the subject, especially concerning the sexuality of women. Sexual expression is often discouraged in women and used to judge their worth. Coming from a feminist perspective, Objectification Theory (Frederickson & Roberts, 1997) posits that the sexual objectification of women’s bodies, forcing women to value themselves only in terms of how sexually attractive they are to others, has resulted in lower self-esteem and higher instances …

Investigating The Lexical Support In Non-Native English Speakers Using The Phonemic Restoration Paradigm, Mohammed Saad Alsahli May 2016

Investigating The Lexical Support In Non-Native English Speakers Using The Phonemic Restoration Paradigm, Mohammed Saad Alsahli

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Samuel and Frost (2015) investigated the differences between native and non-native English speakers’ lexical influence in speech perception. Using the selective adaptation method, the study showed that lexical support was weaker in less language proficient non-native speakers than native speakers; however, lexical support became stronger in more proficient non-native speakers. The present study investigated the lexical support in speech perception between native and non-native English speakers. Unlike the method used by Samuel and Frost (2015), the present study used the phonemic restoration paradigm. The benefit of using this method is to investigate the difference between native and non-native speakers in …

The Effects Of Life History On Expedited Shipping, Adam Jess Armijo May 2016

The Effects Of Life History On Expedited Shipping, Adam Jess Armijo

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This is a thesis studying individual differences in making a selection to expedite shipping. Specifically, the following experiment tested how individuals would make the decision to pay money to expedite shipping based on a few psychological characteristics theoretically linked to how individuals perceive and value time. In the following thesis, life history theory, the monetary-choice questionnaire assessing delay discounting, and gender were used to predict differences in the maximum amount an individual will spend to expedite shipping (as a proportion of total product cost). This was conducted by collecting data from an online population to more closely simulate online purchasing. …

The United Rhetorical States Of America: A Place For Aristotle In U.S. Citizenship, Kurt Beyers May 2016

The United Rhetorical States Of America: A Place For Aristotle In U.S. Citizenship, Kurt Beyers

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The United States of America was founded on rhetorical justifications and has been governed through most of its history by a system designed to operate on rhetorical principles. The process depends on persuasive practices in the selection of the executives and the legislators responsible for governing. The base of this system is in the citizens responsible for electing the leaders and, ultimately, approving or rejecting the actions proposed by those leaders. Persuasive communication is a vital part of governance at every step. Citizenship in such a government is an active process. This paper argues that citizens, to be actively engaged, …

Harmful Inspiration: The Consequences Of Viewing Thinspiration And Fitspiration Images, Lanaya Anderson May 2016

Harmful Inspiration: The Consequences Of Viewing Thinspiration And Fitspiration Images, Lanaya Anderson

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

In addition to the treatment of individuals with existing eating disorders, research and social efforts have been made recently to prevent the development of eating disorders. Preventative efforts have included: a) expanding research concerning the etiology of eating disorders, b) increasing awareness of the consequences of eating disorders, and c) shutting down pro-eating disorder websites. One aspect of pro-eating disorder websites, thinspiration, has emerged on social media websites. Studies concerning the effects of viewing thinspiration have shown that individuals who view thinspiration are more likely to accept unhealthy beauty standards, show increased self objectification and sexualization, exhibit increased distortion of …
