Lung Cancer-Related Emotional Growth : The Role Of Coping Styles And Prior Trauma., Moriah Horn May 2016

Lung Cancer-Related Emotional Growth : The Role Of Coping Styles And Prior Trauma., Moriah Horn

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

The objective of this study was to explore the relationship of prior traumatic history, coping styles, and post-traumatic emotional growth in participants diagnosed with lung cancer. Participants (n = 40) completed baseline questionnaire packets as part of their initial entry into the ongoing study “Understanding the Prognostic Significance of Circadian Disruption in Lung Cancer.” Linear hierarchal regressions adjusted age at diagnosis, stage, and household income. Analyses revealed no relationship between traumatic history and post-traumatic emotional growth. However, lung cancer patients who endorsed active coping styles were significantly more likely to report post-traumatic emotional growth. Secondary analyses revealed this relationship appeared …

Generalized Singular Value Decomposition With Additive Components, Stan Lipovetsky May 2016

Generalized Singular Value Decomposition With Additive Components, Stan Lipovetsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The singular value decomposition (SVD) technique is extended to incorporate the additive components for approximation of a rectangular matrix by the outer products of vectors. While dual vectors of the regular SVD can be expressed one via linear transformation of the other, the modified SVD corresponds to the general linear transformation with the additive part. The method obtained can be related to the family of principal component and correspondence analyses, and can be reduced to an eigenproblem of a specific transformation of a data matrix. This technique is applied to constructing dual eigenvectors for data visualizing in a two dimensional …

Almost Unbiased Estimator Using Known Value Of Population Parameter(S) In Sample Surveys, Rajesh Singh, S.B. Gupta, Sachin Malik

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

An almost unbiased estimator using known value of some population parameter(s) is proposed. A class of estimators is defined which includes Singh and Solanki (2012) and Sahai and Ray (1980), Sisodiya and Dwivedi (1981), Singh, Cauhan, Sawan, and Smarandache (2007), Upadhyaya and Singh (1984), Singh and Tailor (2003) estimators. Under simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR) scheme the expressions for bias and mean square error (MSE) are derived. Numerical illustrations are given.

A Comparison Of Estimation Methods For Nonlinear Mixed-Effects Models Under Model Misspecification And Data Sparseness: A Simulation Study, Jeffrey R. Harring, Junhui Liu

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A Monte Carlo simulation is employed to investigate the performance of five estimation methods of nonlinear mixed effects models in terms of parameter recovery and efficiency of both regression coefficients and variance/covariance parameters under varying levels of data sparseness and model misspecification.

Variable Selection In Regression Using Multilayer Feedforward Network, Tejaswi S. Kamble, Dattatraya N. Kashid May 2016

Variable Selection In Regression Using Multilayer Feedforward Network, Tejaswi S. Kamble, Dattatraya N. Kashid

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The selection of relevant variables in the model is one of the important problems in regression analysis. Recently, a few methods were developed based on a model free approach. A multilayer feedforward neural network model was proposed for developing variable selection in regression. A simulation study and real data were used for evaluating the performance of proposed method in the presence of outliers, and multicollinearity.

Jmasm35: A Percentile-Based Power Method: Simulating Multivariate Non-Normal Continuous Distributions (Sas), Jennifer Koran, Todd C. Headrick

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The conventional power method transformation is a moment-matching technique that simulates non-normal distributions with controlled measures of skew and kurtosis. The percentile-based power method is an alternative that uses the percentiles of a distribution in lieu of moments. This article presents a SAS/IML macro that implements the percentile-based power method.

Social Work Faculty Publications

Latin American transgender women are highly vulnerable to HIV infection, and although much is known about factors associated with HIV infection in this population, little is known about the association of human papilloma virus (HPV) with HIV infection. We investigated anogenital HPV and cumulative HIV incidence among 68, initially HIV uninfected, Peruvian transgender women enrolled into a 2-year, prospective cohort study: 95.6% had at least one anogenital HPV genotype at baseline, 19.1% had visible anogenital warts, and 6.0% became infected with HIV over the course of the study. Due to the high anogenital HPV prevalence, this population would likely benefit …

Prevalence Of Sexual Harassment And Assault In Uri Stem Graduate Students, Ivy Burns, Holly Dunsworth May 2016

Prevalence Of Sexual Harassment And Assault In Uri Stem Graduate Students, Ivy Burns, Holly Dunsworth

Senior Honors Projects

There are many barriers for women in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, and math); one, often untalked about, barrier is the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault. In the summer of 2014 the paper “Survey of Academic Field Experiences (SAFE): Trainees Report Harassment and Assault” by Clancy, et. al. was released and shed light on an issue facing many young women and men in science. According to the SAFE survey, a shocking amount of sexual harassment and assault was experienced by the, primarily female, researchers and very few knew how to report an incidence of assault. With this project I …

Influence Of Daily Social Stimulation On Behavioral And Physiological Outcomes In An Animal Model Of Ptsd., Shyam Seetharaman, Monika Fleshner, Collin R. Park, David M. Diamond May 2016

Influence Of Daily Social Stimulation On Behavioral And Physiological Outcomes In An Animal Model Of Ptsd., Shyam Seetharaman, Monika Fleshner, Collin R. Park, David M. Diamond

Psychology Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION: We have shown in previous work that acute episodes of predator exposure occurring in the context of chronic social instability produced PTSD-like sequelae in rats. Our animal model of PTSD contained two components: (1) acute trauma, immobilization of rats in close proximity to a cat twice in 10 days, and (2) chronic social instability, 31 days of randomized housing of cage cohorts. Here we tested the hypothesis that daily social stimulation would block the development of the PTSD-like sequelae.

METHODS: Beginning 24 h after the first cat exposure, adult male rats were given our established PTSD model, alone or …

The Effect Of Spoiler Types On Enjoyment, Sussana Oad May 2016

The Effect Of Spoiler Types On Enjoyment, Sussana Oad

Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The belief that story spoilers are irksome is prevalent in society. However, prior research (Leavitt & Christenfeld, 2011, 2013) has found that spoilers increase enjoyment of short stories, while two follow-up studies (Johnson & Rosenbaum, 2015; Levine, Betzner, & Autry, in press) have failed to confirm these results and, in fact, found the opposite result – that spoilers decrease enjoyment. While these differential results are puzzling, they may be explained by the different spoilers types used in these studies. Therefore, in the present research, we examined whether the discrepant results were due to the spoiler types employed by using all …

“What Did U Say?”: Examining Multi-Tasking Effects On Academic Performance, Emelio Woodstock May 2016

“What Did U Say?”: Examining Multi-Tasking Effects On Academic Performance, Emelio Woodstock

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The ability to multi-task—that is the ability to simultaneously complete more than one activity—has become increasingly essential in the high-tech world that we operate in. However, one's capacity to multi-task efficiently has become a concern among researchers, especially in regards to the influence of technology. Cellular phones play a major role in distracting individuals from completing tasks that require sustained attention. A recent study demonstrated that the mere receipt of smart-phone notifications without interaction with the phone itself, can cause significant distraction and error in an assigned task (Stothart and Mitchum, 2015). Proposed results from this study as well as …

The Israeli Vagabond: An Analysis Of Israel's Hilltop Youth Movement, Laura Singer May 2016

The Israeli Vagabond: An Analysis Of Israel's Hilltop Youth Movement, Laura Singer

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Over the course of the 2015-2016 academic year, I have researched the Hilltop Youth Movement in Israel. The Hilltop Youth is a group of less than 100 individuals who live in settlements in the hills of Israel, past the allotted legal green line and instigate attacks towards Palestinians. In this project, I explain who the Hilltop Youth are and their role as spoilers for peace between Israel and Palestine in the Middle East. To do this, I researched social movements, terrorism, and gang movements to understand what category the Youth fit into and what that determination signifies for Israeli government …

Roman Britain In The Northeast: The Excavation And Interpretation Of Arbeia, South Shields, Eleanor Shotton May 2016

Roman Britain In The Northeast: The Excavation And Interpretation Of Arbeia, South Shields, Eleanor Shotton

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The research goal of this project was to understand the impact that the Roman Empire had upon the indigenous ‘traditional society’ of the northeastern British peoples at Arbeia, located in modern day South Shields. Within that broad goal, the focus was to determine if the influence of the Roman Empire cultivated a unique homogenization of Romano-British culture, or if both societies maintained their own cultures and lived side-by-side with little cultural interaction or meshing with one another, other than trading goods, etc. To seek out the answer to this research question, I conducted literary research on Roman fort practices and …

Affecting Nicaraguan “Vegetable” Literacy With Social Change Advertising, Summer Schneider May 2016

Affecting Nicaraguan “Vegetable” Literacy With Social Change Advertising, Summer Schneider

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

When the Sandinista socialist government gained control they began a total reformation of the country, most notably, the education system. The government supported a small group of men who created the 1980 Literacy Campaign, which worked to educate the majority of the nation. Nicaraguan literacy rates jumped from 49.65% to 87.04% in five months. Despite their successes, literacy rates still suffer today. Through primary research, it has been determined that the biggest issue facing Nicaraguan literacy are “vegetable literates,” those who lose their literacy because they do not use it. In order to combat the issue, I developed a four-part …

Audio-Visual Integration Is Strongest For Spatially Congruent Stimuli, Alyssa Prawl May 2016

Audio-Visual Integration Is Strongest For Spatially Congruent Stimuli, Alyssa Prawl

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Young adult alcohol use is a prevalent and significant public health concern, influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, personality, and social factors. Greater descriptive norms (i.e., perceptions of peer drinking behavior) and injunctive norms (i.e., perceptions of peer drinking acceptability) have been associated with increased young adult drinking. Further emerging research suggest that the association between peer norms and alcohol outcomes may be exacerbated by carrying a 7-repeat allele of the DRD4 VNTR. Presence of a 7-repeat allele has also been associated with greater impulsivity (i.e., novelty-seeking and sensation seeking), but it remains unknown whether such heightened impulsivity explains …

Abstract

This paper explores and challenges the development strategies of Rafael Correa in Ecuador and, more generally, the new Latin American left through the Yasuní-ITT case study. Claiming to implement a post-neoliberal development model that stands to uphold the principles of buen vivir, post-neoliberalism, and the 2008 Ecuadorean constitution, the Yasuní-ITT case study seems less like a commitment to the rights of the Pachamama and the rights of indigenous tribes, and more like a political tactic, the creation of a hollow narrative that positions the new Latin American left as anti-Northern, anti- IMF, and as “post-neoliberal.” …

Sourcing The Sherds: An Analysis Of The Coarse Earthenware Ceramics From Trents Plantation In Barbados, Sara Mcnamara

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Trents, originally known as Fort Plantation, was one of the five initial plantations established by the English in 1627. Since 2012, three different loci at Trents have been excavated: an outbuilding to the main house (Locus 1), enslaved laborers’ living quarters (Locus 2), and a cave site (Locus 3). Locus 1 is well stratified with clear divides between material dating to the pre-sugar era in the early 17th century and the following period from mid-17th to early 18th century. 18th and 19th century deposits cap this locus. Locus 2 dates from the mid-17th to early 19th century. Distinct floor areas …

In Pursuit Of My Eye: A Book Of Photographs, Amanda Piela

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This book progresses chronologically through photos that represent pivotal moments in my life. I carefully selected the photos I have included in the book from thousands of photographs that I had never so much as even looked at after I shot them and dumped them onto hard drives. The book functions as a way to organize my journey through photography and extrapolate on what I have learned over the years. I refer to teachers, professors, peers and advisors that have influenced me in countless ways as well as friends that have modeled for me and supported me over the years. …

Media Technology: An Evolving Political Machine, Jesper Van Den Bergh May 2016

Media Technology: An Evolving Political Machine, Jesper Van Den Bergh

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The goal of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of social media and the role that it plays when it comes to influencing legislation. The methodology was two-fold, a historical comparison with the role of social media being compared to the roles of media/information technology in the past, and a quantitative analysis of fiscal spending and social media presence. Possible problems could include a lack of quantitative data when it comes to social media, and a failure to establish enough of a connection between social media and technologies of the past. However, through these avenues the argument was advanced …

Arab Women In Development: A Postcolonial Legacy, Rachel Bass May 2016

Arab Women In Development: A Postcolonial Legacy, Rachel Bass

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The way in which women in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have been portrayed in international development and rights discourse is based on a narrow, ahistorical view of Arab/Muslim majority societies, which exhibits an overconfidence in the discipline of economics and the ideology of neoliberalism, or free-market economics. Based on arguments presented by anthropologists, feminist economists, geographers, sociologists, comparative literary scholars and others, I explore in this thesis the legacy of colonialism in MENA in its various incarnations: as physical colonization in the 19th and 20th centuries; as suppression of indigenous knowledge in favor of …

The Poppy: Contextualising A Seemingly Timeless Symbol In History, Materials And Practice, Emily Barrett May 2016

The Poppy: Contextualising A Seemingly Timeless Symbol In History, Materials And Practice, Emily Barrett

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

the poppy, a blood red flower, is the British nation’s symbol of remembrance. For over one hundred years, the poppy has been worn on the lapels of numerous generations as an act of respect for the military men and women that lost their lives serving the nation during times of war. The tradition ultimately began with World War I and since that time the poppy, its meaning and its use, is often viewed in a timeless manner; it transcends time to unite the past and the present. However, the poppy is not an unchanging, static and bounded symbol. This research …

Collective And Individual Identities Of Soldiers At The Florence American Cemetery And Memorial, Christiana Chmielewski May 2016

Collective And Individual Identities Of Soldiers At The Florence American Cemetery And Memorial, Christiana Chmielewski

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The Florence American Cemetery and Memorial, located outside of Florence, Italy, is the final resting place of 4,402 American soldiers who died during World War II while fighting in the Tuscan region after the liberation of Rome in June 1944. In addition to those buried, 1,409 soldiers are commemorated on the Wall of the Missing. By joining the military, these men (and women) became a part of the larger military family. Such a process ensured that their individual identities would become intertwined with that of a collective military identity. However, it was their biological kin, the family that remained in …
