Oak Regeneration In An Eastern Pennsylvania Forest: Is Prescribed Fire Needed?, Samanatha M. Ebert Apr 2015

Oak Regeneration In An Eastern Pennsylvania Forest: Is Prescribed Fire Needed?, Samanatha M. Ebert

The Compass

Fire has shaped the American landscape as much as any other natural or anthropogenic disturbance such as flooding, glaciers, and tornadoes, or logging. Native Americans used fire for thousand of years to facilitate farming, travel, and hunting. Since the 1930s, the United States Forest Service has instituted and maintained a policy of firesuppression. This has changed the composition of American forests allowing shade- tolerant later successional species to thrive, but fire-adapted species are declining. This study establishes a baseline of tree composition of State Game Lands 210 in Dauphin County in Eastern Pennsylvania forest in preparation for the proposed controlled …

Negotiating Selfhood And Civic Responsibility In Thoreau’S Walden, Emily Young Apr 2015

Negotiating Selfhood And Civic Responsibility In Thoreau’S Walden, Emily Young

The Compass

Henry David Thoreau’s Walden is many things: an account of a man’s solitary retreat from society, a testament to the threat of modernity, a call for autonomy and mental awakening, and a sheer appreciation of life’s simplicities. While some of the text is devoted to his daily life on Walden Pond, much of it is highly political and dialectical, advocating strongly for social change in nineteenth-century society rife with increasing industrialization, capitalism, and slavery. His withdrawal from this society was intended to show all the flaws of social organization andobsequious citizenship and the benefits of living simply, independently, and with …

Ceramics Production In Late Hellenistic And Roman Syracuse: The Search For The Pottery Quarter, Stephan Hassam

The Compass

Arcadia University offers a field school at the Catacombs of St. Lucy in Syracuse, Italy under the scientific direction of Dr. Davide Tanasi (The College of Global Studies, Arcadia Sicily Center). Apart from the didactic function of the excavation, it also brings to light important information on the archaeology of ancient Syracuse. Indeed, the excavation has yielded information not only about the early Christian use of the site (3rd to 6th century A.D.) but also Late Hellenistic and Early Roman Syracuse in the context of a pottery manufacturing quarter (3rd century B.C. – 1st century A.D.). Though largely ignored in …

Psychology And The Bible: A Word To The Wise, Janelle Wong Apr 2015

Psychology And The Bible: A Word To The Wise, Janelle Wong

Education Undergraduate Research

The nature versus nurture controversy has been a topic of debate for many years. Although modern psychology does not directly examine the concept of wisdom, it does attempt to examine the idea of intelligence. Modern psychologists have proposed various positions either supporting one side or the other. Most psychologists agree that intelligence is determined by both heredity and the environment. Conversely, the Bible only provides evidence for the environmental influences of wisdom. Although modern psychology views intelligence as being both genetically and environmentally influenced, the Bible views wisdom as being gained through experience.

Re-Housing Slides In Special Collections, Abby M. Rolland Apr 2015

Re-Housing Slides In Special Collections, Abby M. Rolland

Blogging the Library

So as I mentioned two weeks, I re-housed a lot of old slides. I’ve added some pictures, to show the wear that old slide covers get and how slides need to be housed in specific, archival sheets. I got through all of the slides in the back. Then, Amy (archivist) and I went to look at some of the slides in this other area and we found at that there are lots of slides in nice, healthy slide covers, but they’re all completely out of order. There are slides from 1986 in the same sheet as slides from the early …

Breaking News: A Woman Is Running, Bridget F. Cummings Apr 2015

Breaking News: A Woman Is Running, Bridget F. Cummings

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

As women are still underrepresented in legislative offices, it is important to examine the road it takes for them to get there. Many scholars have explored gender bias in the media when covering female candidates for elected office. Fowler and Lawless (2009) uncover bias in media coverage of candidates between 1990 and 1997 in Looking for Sex in All the Wrong Places: Press Coverage and the Electoral Fortunes of Gubernatorial Candidates. This paper replicates the method used by Fowler and Lawless (2009) to examine gubernatorial candidates between 2008 and 2014. The independent variable in my research is the gender bias …

Manipulation Of Same Sex Social Pair Bonds In Budgerigars, Melopsittacus Undulatus, Amanda M. Stilwell Apr 2015

Manipulation Of Same Sex Social Pair Bonds In Budgerigars, Melopsittacus Undulatus, Amanda M. Stilwell

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

Same sex pair bonding can be found throughout various animal species. These relationships can be common in monogamous species, especially when there is a lack of members of the opposite sex. Budgerigars, Melopsittacus undulatus, are a socially monogamous species, which create strong pair bonds but are also known to engage in extra pair copulations. When looking at an all-male flock of budgerigars, the question arises, are these bonds easily broken or disrupted by a third party individual. After determining seven pair bonds in a flock of 32 males, these pairs were removed from an aviary and placed in separate …

The Economic And Financial Effect Of Single Parent Homes, Douglas Sidey Apr 2015

The Economic And Financial Effect Of Single Parent Homes, Douglas Sidey

Senior Honors Theses

A crisis is facing the American population today because of the growing prevalence of single parent homes. This single parenthood produces a cyclical nature in which the families that get started have a hard time removing themselves from the patterns and problems of this cycle. This is due in large part to the financial issues that a family will face due to the divorce from, or loss of, a spouse. These financial issues affect not only the parent that is raising children alone, but it affects the children, the spouse that has left, and the economy at large. This phenomenon, …

A Roadmap For Governance Reforms, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Pakistan has been facing a unique and difficult dilemma for quite some time. Government leaders of the day are unhappy that they are unable to deliver upon the commitments they had made to the electorate at the time of the elections. Policy-Performance Gap is widening every day, Decision making is slow and implementation of decisions almost non-existent. Credibility of each successive government is eroding rapidly among the public at large creating trust deficit in the political leadership. Can Electronic Health Records Systems Support New Payment Methods For Health Centers?, Peter Shin, Feygele Jacobs, Jeffrey Barnes, James B. Welsh, Lisa Perry, Scott D. Morgan

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

This study assessed the feasibility and usefulness of combining electronic health record (EHR) data with federal cost report data for the purposes of: 1) quantifying the provision of enabling services; and 2) for use as the basis of community health center payment rate-setting. The study used EHR data derived from the Center for Primary Care Informatics to isolate enabling services and perform the end-to-end analysis that might be required to develop or evaluate reimbursement rates. The study revealed that data extracted from federal cost reports combined with data from the EHR fall short of providing the information required to reasonably …

Water Poverty In California’S Rural Disadvantaged Communities, Alyssa J. Galik Apr 2015

Water Poverty In California’S Rural Disadvantaged Communities, Alyssa J. Galik

Featured Research

California, the eighth largest economy in the world, has nearly one million residents that lack daily access to clean drinking water, yet it recently became the first state in the US to declare water a human right through the passage of 2013 Assembly Bill 685. The majority of water quality violations take place in the rural San Joaquin Valley in unincorporated, low-income communities, which have difficulties accessing clean, drinking water due to issues including quality, affordability, and physical accessibility. The role of community integration in improving water poverty has been studied extensively in developing countries but its impact is infrequently …
