My Last Post!, Megan E. Fowle

Blogging the Library

I cannot believe that this is my last post. It seems like only yesterday that I was writing my first post about how my training for the reference desk was going. This semester has been truly wonderful and I have learned so much. Through the many projects that I have taken part in and my final project that I designed myself, it has been an amazing opportunity. Bargaining In The Shadow Of Arbitration, Riccardo Marselli, Bryan C. Mccannon, Marco Vannini Apr 2015

Bargaining In The Shadow Of Arbitration, Riccardo Marselli, Bryan C. Mccannon, Marco Vannini

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Arbitration, as an alternative to litigation for contract disputes, reduces costs and time. While it has frequently been thought of as a substitute to pretrial bargaining and litigation, in fact, parties may be able to reach a settlement privately while engaged in the arbitration process. Consequently, the institutional design may influence the bargaining. We develop a theoretical model of pre-arbitration bargaining that is able to identify the impact of the institutional features on its success. A detailed data set from arbitration proceedings in Italy is analyzed. The exogenous heterogeneity in the composition of the panel of arbitrators allows us to …

A Double Dispossession: The Crimean Tatars After Russia’S Ukrainian War, Stephen Blank Apr 2015

A Double Dispossession: The Crimean Tatars After Russia’S Ukrainian War, Stephen Blank

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Genocide and genocidal political processes have been used by the Russian state for decades—if not centuries—as a technique of self-colonial rule intended to eliminate “dissident” ethnic identities. Within this context, the historical fate of the Crimean Tatars is surely a unique one. Despite Soviet obstructions, the Crimean Tatars eventually returned to their homeland in Crimea after suffering forced deportations and genocide at the hands of the Soviet government. Now, 70 years after their deportation and genocide by Stalin, the Crimean Tatars are still fighting for justice. Defined as an autonomous group in their own land under the Ukrainian government, the …

Personal Perceptions Of Privacy And Security, Jaime L. R. Grinch Apr 2015

Personal Perceptions Of Privacy And Security, Jaime L. R. Grinch

Honors College Theses

The US government is utilizing multiple controversial methods to detect and prevent terrorism. Do government officers, such as police, view these programs differently than university students? What other differences may exist to explain the difference in viewpoint? Surveys were given to the students of Georgia Southern University and officers of the Statesboro Police Department. They provided their respective opinions on these programs. The data suggested that police were more open to the use of surveillance to prevent terrorism. Police were more willing to allow the government to use surveillance against Muslims, Latinos, Liberals, Christians, and Conservatives. Also between the two …

A Content Analysis Of The Mpaa Rating System And Its Evolution, Cesar A. Perez Apr 2015

A Content Analysis Of The Mpaa Rating System And Its Evolution, Cesar A. Perez

Honors College Theses

This thesis analyzes the content within PG-13 and R-rated films from 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2014 to determine if there is any indication of ratings creep. Ratings creep is a term used to describe the increase of adult content in movies; especially in movies aimed at a younger audience. The film industry since the beginning has had to adapt to an ever-changing society. From small silent pictures to big-budget digital productions the film industry has evolved into what it is today, a statement of freedom of expression. It is this freedom of expression, however, that has placed the industry in …

Finding Meaning In Difference: Girls' Education Initiatives In Kenya From The Un And Ngos, Paige Heather Reese Mckinsey Apr 2015

Finding Meaning In Difference: Girls' Education Initiatives In Kenya From The Un And Ngos, Paige Heather Reese Mckinsey

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Within international affairs academia, an understanding exists; when girls are educated, their families, their communities, their nations, and the world at large benefits. However, the academic work analyzing girls' education initiatives in developing nations has a partial view of the situation, focusing solely on those initiatives which combat logistical barriers. In previous research, it was found that a divide exists between the initiatives taken by NGOs and the United Nations working in Africa in which the former focuses on normative barriers to education while the later focuses on logistical barriers. What has yet to be discussed is the reason for …

Which Side Are We On? The Effect Of Self-Identified Class On Political Elections In Virginia, Benjamin Fredrick Hermerding Apr 2015

Which Side Are We On? The Effect Of Self-Identified Class On Political Elections In Virginia, Benjamin Fredrick Hermerding

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Inequality is rising in the United States. One of the possible ramifications of this trend could be a shift in the political landscape over the next couple decades. In particular, Americans could become more divided politically on class-based lines due to the economic strain put on the working class. Using data from the University of Mary Washington's Center for Leadership and Media Studies' 2014 Survey, this paper strives to explore the current landscape of class-based politics. First, it explores if class-based politics are still salient in Virginia by examining if there is a correlation between an individuals' self-defined class and …

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose

Clinical developments continue to grow at an accelerated rate, challenging the existing paradigm of information access, dissemination and learning by trainees. A Case Study Of Professional Coach-Client Communication., Scott Shank Apr 2015

A Case Study Of Professional Coach-Client Communication., Scott Shank

Honors Theses

Organizations increasingly embrace coaching as a core process to improve employee learning, increase overall performance, and develop leaders. Extant research on coaching is increasing, yet communication-based theories are underrepresented in the literature despite the fact that coaching is fundamentally discursive in nature. Further, although the coaching literature suggests that coaching conversations contribute to client identity growth and potential transformation, studies that specifically explore such activities are underrepresented in existing scholarship. Further, there lacks sufficient research examining how coaching contributes to the ongoing identity development of the coaches themselves. To fill this gap, this qualitative study explored the role coaching plays …

"Luck Of The Draw:" Enhancing Safety In Equine University Sport, Angela Barbour Apr 2015

"Luck Of The Draw:" Enhancing Safety In Equine University Sport, Angela Barbour

Honors Projects

Equestrian sports have the highest rates of injury across all sports with traumatic brain injury rates twice as high as those in football. The goal of this project is to make our university Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) athletes safer by creating an easy-to-use tool that athletes can apply to evaluate new horses they ride at competitions. The tool guides team members through evaluation techniques by providing important safety dimensions and scoring guidelines. An undergraduate majoring in biology with an interest in Veterinarian specialization developed the diagnostic tool. The tool allows evaluation of movement/quality of gaits, jumping ability, equine personality, …

Non-Affiliated Users' Access In Tennessee Academic Libraries, Michael Busbee, Heidi Busch, Jim Nance Apr 2015

Non-Affiliated Users' Access In Tennessee Academic Libraries, Michael Busbee, Heidi Busch, Jim Nance

The Southeastern Librarian

This survey was designed to ascertain how Tennessee public four-year academic libraries were addressing unaffiliated user access to services and resources and related security issues. At one point in time, resources and services were basically limited to the material on the shelf and the personnel employed by the library. Security issues were concerned with student pranks and vandalism and, depending upon location, the issue of vagrants and/or latchkey kids. Access to the building usually meant people had access to all of the material the library had on the shelf and the only question was whether an unaffiliated user could borrow …
