The Attitudes And Beliefs Of Special And General Educational Professionals Concerning Alcohol And Drug Problems, Troy Wayne Kieser
The Attitudes And Beliefs Of Special And General Educational Professionals Concerning Alcohol And Drug Problems, Troy Wayne Kieser
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Drug and alcohol abuse is one of the greatest challenges of public education. Substance abuse affects student academic performance. Teacher attitudes concerning substance use are linked to drug and alcohol use by students. The purpose of this study was to assertion teacher attitudes and beliefs about drug and alcohol use. The data were collected using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was a modified version of the Addiction Belief Inventory (ABI) based on the five constructs (e.g., coping, efficacy, disease, lack of efficacy, moral weakness) of substance abuse (Broadus, Hartje, Roget, & Cahoon, 2010; Luke, Ribisi, Walton, & Davidson, 2002). The participants …

"Breaking Up Is Hard To Do": An Analysis Of Parasocial Relationships And Breakups Among "How I Met Your Mother" Viewers, Sara Montes De Oca
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The study of one-sided mediated interactions, commonly known as parasocial interactions, have generated significant investigations which have examined both mediated relationships through television, the Internet, other media, and the discontinuation of these relationships (also known as parasocial breakups). These studies have specifically identified certain trends in which respondents have tended to form strong emotional connections with subject(s) within narrative fictional depictions. This study examines the relationship between parasocial breakup and the dissolution of a viewer following the end of primetime series, How I Met Your Mother. The following measures were used in the survey; 1) age, gender, and ethnicity; 2) …
What Happens In Las Vegas? How Exhibitors Use The Tradeshow Floor And Social Venues To Facilitate Business, Chrissy L. Nanton
What Happens In Las Vegas? How Exhibitors Use The Tradeshow Floor And Social Venues To Facilitate Business, Chrissy L. Nanton
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study illuminates how place characteristics shape the way in which tradeshow exhibitors “do” business on and off the tradeshow floor. A surge in framing tradeshows as temporary clusters has occurred in the recent decades. Temporary clusters are defined as “hotspots of intensive and dedicated exchange of knowledge, network building and generation of new ideas” (Maskell, Bathelt and Malmberg 2004). The idea that temporarily sharing geographic space can advantage firms is particularly noteworthy in a post-industrial globalized economy. In the literature, social scientists have paid specific attention to the connections between geography and spatial proximity, and information diffusion and knowledge …
The Neuroendocrine And Performance Correlates Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Males And Females, Meghan E. Pierce
The Neuroendocrine And Performance Correlates Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Males And Females, Meghan E. Pierce
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Distinct gender differences exist in the incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder in the United States population. Currently, the direct biological mechanisms involved in the development of PTSD have not been elucidated. However, many studies indicate a dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-axis) as a contributing factor in the development of PTSD. This study investigated performance and endocrine correlates of PTSD in 38 females without PTSD, 14 females with PTSD, 32 males without PTSD and 5 males with PTSD. We examined the differences between basal cortisol concentrations, as well as cortisol reactivity to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). In addition, …
Contrasting Perceptions Of Motivation To Change: Clinicians And Substance Abuse Clients, Arthur Tabrizi
Contrasting Perceptions Of Motivation To Change: Clinicians And Substance Abuse Clients, Arthur Tabrizi
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Substance abuse persists as one of the most costly, prevalent, and damaging health problems in the United States. As of 2012, an estimated 22 million individuals, approximately 8.9 percent of the total population, were diagnosed with substance abuse or dependence disorder. Considering the significant number of clients served, successful national completion rates among individuals utilizing outpatient care remain markedly low. In the state of Nevada, where the present study is conducted, successful intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) completion rate remains at an alarmingly low 20.1 percent. Early dropout is a particular concern in that duration of participation in treatment has been …
Examining Factors Influencing Ncaa Division-I Conference Realignment, Ginikachi O. Nwosu
Examining Factors Influencing Ncaa Division-I Conference Realignment, Ginikachi O. Nwosu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The landscape of intercollegiate athletics continues to evolve and become
more dynamic. One of the most visible aspects of these changes is athletic conference realignment. During the period from 2010 to 2014 alone, over 30 institutions across the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) changed or announced imminent plans to change athletic conference affiliation (Mandel, 2012). Conference realignment is described as institutional changes in athletic conference affiliation (Covell & Barr, 2010; Groza, 2010; Sweitzer, 2009). Various literature has identified variables which influence NCAA Division-I institutions’ decisions in regard to conference realignment, yet no comprehensive study has examined …

Heads Up!
Objective:
This study examined whether brief motivational interventions (BMIs) designed for reducing heavy drinking among college students have secondary effects on reducing marijuana use.
Method:
The data came from Project INTEGRATE, which combined data from 24 independent trials of BMIs and other individual-focused interventions designed to reduce heavy drinking and related problems among college students. We analyzed data from 10 samples across nine studies that used random assignment of participants into either a BMI or a control group and assessed marijuana use outcomes (N = 6,768; 41.5% men; 73.2% White; 57.7% first-year students; 19.2% current marijuana users at baseline). …

Pathological Effects Of Repeated Concussive Tbi In Mouse Models: Periventricular Damage And Ventriculomegaly, Richard H. Wolferz Jr.
Honors Scholar Theses
Repeated concussive traumatic brain injury (rcTBI) is the most prominent form of head injury affecting the brain, with an estimated 1.7 million Americans affected each year (Kuhn 2012). Neurologists have been concerned about the danger of repeated head impacts since the 1920’s, but researchers have only begun to understand the long-term effects of rcTBI (McKee 2009). Although symptoms can be as mild as dizziness, current research suggests that multiple concussions can lead to a progressive degenerative brain disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) (Luo 2008, McKee 2009, Kane 2013). Research on the brain is just beginning to scratch the …
Are Women Higher In Anxiety Than Men? United States Surveys, 2003‐2013, Rabale Hasan
Are Women Higher In Anxiety Than Men? United States Surveys, 2003‐2013, Rabale Hasan
Honors Scholar Theses
A large proportion of the U.S. population suffers from anxiety and related mental illnesses. An in-depth analysis needs to examine all possible factors that may explain why anxiety is on an upward trend and why women are more likely than men to present with anxiety. This study examined the anxiety in five cross-sectional United States surveys (Total N=19,630) taken in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2013. Predictors such as demographics (e.g., race, age, gender), medical conditions, behavioral choices (e.g., BMI, exercise, sleep), and psychosocial stressors were investigated. Linear regression and logistic regression analyses were used to examine trends. Anxiety is …
Oscillatory Activity In The Subthalamic Nucleus And Motor Cortex In A Pharmacological Model Of Parkinsonian Tremor, Aileen F. Haque
Oscillatory Activity In The Subthalamic Nucleus And Motor Cortex In A Pharmacological Model Of Parkinsonian Tremor, Aileen F. Haque
Honors Scholar Theses
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a motor disorder with symptoms including resting tremor, akinesia, bradykinesia, and rigidity. A major neuropathological feature of PD is degeneration of nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) neurons. The resulting DA depletions lead to the production of severe motor deficits. Pharmacological agents that reduce DA transmission can also induce these motor abnormalities. In addition to the involvement of DA, drugs acting on acetylcholine, namely cholinomimetics, can induce or exacerbate Parkinsonian symptoms. In humans, one of the main motor symptoms associated with PD is resting tremor, occurring at a frequency of 3-7 Hz. This can be modeled in rodents using …
Microconsignment As Magic Or Sleight-Of-Hand: How Social Entrepreneurship Affects Women's Political And Economic Participation In Guatemala, Briana Bardos
Honors Scholar Theses
Much research has been done on increasing the amount of female participation in both the formal economy and political sphere across the globe. This project seeks to go beyond this idea and analyze whether economic empowerment leads to increased political participation. By analyzing a specific type of empowerment, social entrepreneurship, through the specific lens of Soluciones Comunitarias’ MicroConsignment Model, my paper looks to explore if and how women in Guatemala are affected by this model politically and economically. Existing work in the field of women’s social movements makes clear the linkage between social mobilization and positive outcomes, such as increased …
Central Auditory Processing And The Link To Reading Ability In Adults, Lisa M. Brody
Central Auditory Processing And The Link To Reading Ability In Adults, Lisa M. Brody
Honors Scholar Theses
What makes someone a good reader? What makes someone a poor reader? The root biological marker of reading ability has yet to be determined. Many scientists agree that phonological awareness, the understanding of speech sounds, and phonological decoding are key components of reading ability (Melby-Lervag, Lyster, & Hulme, 2012). In addition to this, new research suggests that the auditory system, specifically the timing of auditory processing in the brain, provides a crucial platform that supports the development of reading ability (Banai et al., 2009). This thesis provides empirical data to support the link between reading skill …

Use Of Phonetics In The Beginner French Classroom: An Analysis Of Textbooks, Melissa B. Scarbrough
Honors Scholar Theses
Textbooks are a common resource for teachers in a variety of content areas, as such it is important that teachers know whether or not textbooks are aligned to standards and current research. This study investigates if common textbooks, reported to be in use in schools across Connecticut, are aligned to recent second language acquisition and French linguistics studies.
Perceived Subordinate Support (Psubs): Identifying Its Unique Impact On Positive Employee Outcomes, Stephen Elkourie
Perceived Subordinate Support (Psubs): Identifying Its Unique Impact On Positive Employee Outcomes, Stephen Elkourie
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present study is a replication and extension of research assessing the positive relationship between Perceived Subordinate Support (PSubS) and positive employee behaviors. We relate those relationships to those of Perceived Organizational Support (POS) and Perceived Supervisor Support (PSS). We also addresses whether PSubS is a unique construct from POS and PSS. We also explored the possibility of a Generalized Perception of Support (GPS) underlying all three support constructs using the bifactor model. Results provide support for a unique PSubS construct, while the existence of an underlying GPS was not supported. The research serves as further construct validation to the …
The Impact Of Team Social Role Performance On Team Cohesion And Team Performance, Graham H. Lowman
The Impact Of Team Social Role Performance On Team Cohesion And Team Performance, Graham H. Lowman
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined the relationships between team social role performance, team cohesion, and team performance. The team social roles examined were those identified by Mumford, Campion, and Morgeson (2006): Cooperator, Communicator, and Calibrator. The Group Environmental Questionnaire (GEQ) developed by Carron, Widmeyer, and Brawley (1985) provided the measure of team cohesion on the individual and group levels. Performance reports from the GLO-BUS business simulation game provided team performance scores. Results indicated that mean team social role performance and the standard deviation of team social role performance are significantly correlated and predictive of team cohesion. In addition, results indicated a non-significant …
Is The Classroom Better? An Introspective Look At E-Learning And Classroom From A Ged Standpoint, Taryn C. Schrader
Is The Classroom Better? An Introspective Look At E-Learning And Classroom From A Ged Standpoint, Taryn C. Schrader
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The present study examined whether participants assigned to a well-executed e-learning program would show greater improvement in mean test scores pre-post instructional intervention compared to those learning through the traditional classroom method. In the last ten years, many organizations have created e-learning programs with the hopes of enhancing or replacing traditional instructor-led classes (Jones, 2013). However, 41% of American Society of Training and Development’s respondents admitted their organization does not possess metrics to evaluate e-learning’s usefulness (Miller, 2012). One of the major challenges in incorporating and implementing e-learning programs is the ability to measure its use and effectiveness (Miller, 2012). …
The Moderating Influence Of Personality On Combat Veterans Transitioning Into Civilian College Life, Jason L. Davis
The Moderating Influence Of Personality On Combat Veterans Transitioning Into Civilian College Life, Jason L. Davis
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Combat veterans returning to a civilian lifestyle are assisted in many ways during their transition. These services are not only demonstrations of patriotic support, but are typically intended to aid veterans with their transition. The transition for combat veterans is, in many ways, completely different from what most of us will ever experience. Several factors may influence the overall success of this transition for veterans. This study examined the relationship between veterans’ combat experiences and their transition into civilian college life. The constructs of transition were defined by grade point average (GPA) and current well-being. The influence of certain personality …
The Effects Of Relationship Satisfaction With Primary Caregivers On Adult Relationship Conflict In Survivors Of Childhood Abuse, Tess Stoops
Theses - ALL
It has been shown in research that childhood abuse can be detrimental to children and their abilities to cope, function at school, understand social situations, and even to communicate in their adult romantic relationships (Coleman & Widom, 2004; Haskett & Kistner, 1991; Perry, 2009). As a child that has been abused grows and forms relationships as an adult, the abuse can affect these relationships in negative ways (Unger & Luca, 2014; Coleman & Widom, 2004). However, close relationships that provide safety and attunement can help create healthy attachments that foster coping skills to counteract the effects of the abuse (Siegal, …
Farmer Discontent In Periurban Bangalore: The Utopia Of Agricultural Modernization, Neoliberal Developmentalism And The 21st Century Global City, Zhe Yu Lee
Geography Honors Projects
Today’s agricultural production in periurban Bangalore is structured by deteriorating ecological conditions and lack of enabling economic environment. Many farmers live in precarity even as market logic has become hegemonic given the dominance of input and capital-intensive cash crop production, a situation exacerbated by the threat of government-driven land acquisition. In my honors thesis, I argue that epistemological assumptions regarding agricultural modernization and neoliberal developmentalism that undergird this mode of production have come to largely structure the operation of institutional frameworks and individual subjectivities. However, these “external” influences are never fully totalizable and by invoking notions of assemblage and hybridity, …
In The Shadows Of Dominion: Anthropocentrism And The Continuance Of A Culture Of Oppression, Christopher A. Shields
In The Shadows Of Dominion: Anthropocentrism And The Continuance Of A Culture Of Oppression, Christopher A. Shields
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The oppression of nonhuman animals in Western culture observed in societal institutions and practices such as the factory farm, hunting, and vivisection, exhibits alarming linkages and parallels to some episodes of the oppression of human animals. This work traces the foundations of anthropocentrism in Western philosophy and connects them to the oppressions of racism, sexism, and ethnocentrism. In outlining a uniform theory of oppression detailed through the marginalization, isolation, and exploitation of human and nonhuman animals alike, parallels among the groups emerge as the fused oppression of each exhibits a commonality among them. The analysis conducted within this work highlights …
The Process Of Musical Acquisition For Traditional String Musicians In The Homeschool Environment, Keith R. Williams
The Process Of Musical Acquisition For Traditional String Musicians In The Homeschool Environment, Keith R. Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study examined how three accomplished traditional string musicians learned music in their homeschool environments. Data were derived from formal interviews of the three musicians. The research framework for this qualitative study is based upon the socio-educational model of second language learning motivation developed by R. C. Gardner (1959, 1985, 2004, 2010) and applied to the study of instrumental music learning motivation by P. D. MacIntyre (2012). Structured interview questions, triangulated by additional informal dialogues, field observations, externally documented sources, and collaboration with an expert review panel were the data collection activities utilized in the research. Five overarching themes …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Pile Mound survey includes magnetometry paired with targeted ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic induction (EMI) surveys of the mound and testing of associated features over the ca. 6.5 ha site. The GPR survey discovered six rock features (five large rock features within the mound and one marking the outside of the mound). Knowledge of mounds in the Upper Cumberland Plateau (UCP) is lacking—the closest other studied sites are at the Corbin Site, Croley-Evans, Bell Site, and Beasley Mounds, approximately 75 – 100 km away. However, the most similar mound construction is found at Corbin and Cherokee sites, some 175 …
Bridge/Adapt: A Systematic Cognitive Rehabilitation Curriculum, Julie S. Bergen, Natalie Repin, Amy Bennet, Abigail Lafrenz
Bridge/Adapt: A Systematic Cognitive Rehabilitation Curriculum, Julie S. Bergen, Natalie Repin, Amy Bennet, Abigail Lafrenz
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
Cognitive impairment, including deficits in memory, attention, visual perception, executive functioning, and self-awareness, is a common consequence of acquired brain injury (ABI). Subsequently, these cognitive impairments result in functional impairments in daily life activities for clients with ABI. Rehabilitation efforts are categorized under two broad approaches: remediation and adaptation. Computer-assisted cognitive retraining (CACR) is a remediation approach using a computer platform to deliver cognitive exercises. CACR therapy can lead to improvements in memory and attention for adults with chronic ABI. However, memory and attention improvements from CACR may not carry over to functional improvements in occupational performance. Research suggested that …
Exploring The Developmental Dynamics Of Motivational Resilience Over The Transition To Middle School, Jennifer Rose Pitzer
Exploring The Developmental Dynamics Of Motivational Resilience Over The Transition To Middle School, Jennifer Rose Pitzer
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years students' academic engagement has gained increasing favor as a necessary component of authentic learning experiences. However, less research has focused on what students do when they run into everyday problems in school that allows them to return (or not) to a state of ongoing engagement. Expanding on these ideas, this project explores students' motivational resilience in school, that is, the dynamic interactions among their ongoing engagement, emotional reactivity, academic coping, and re-engagement after encounters with difficulties and setbacks in school. Grounded in an established motivational model based on Deci & Ryan's (1985) self-determination theory, and building on …
From The Warehouse To The Deathbed: Challenging The Conditions Of Mass Death In Prison, Ernest K. Chavez
From The Warehouse To The Deathbed: Challenging The Conditions Of Mass Death In Prison, Ernest K. Chavez
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The purpose of this project is to analyze the crisis of mass incarceration by placing the conditions faced by elderly, terminally ill, and dying prisoners, as its main point of focus. Much of this crisis was built through post-1970s American penal policies which set in place tough sentencing laws, increased prosecutorial power, and ultimately, led to a significant growth in the prisoner population. Today, elderly and terminally ill prisoners make up the fastest growing population inside of prisons. Few of these prisoners are approved for early release, and instead die while incarcerated. This has resulted in a condition of mass …
The Surveillance State: Do License Plate Readers Impinge Upon Americans' Civil Liberties?, Jourdin Hermann
The Surveillance State: Do License Plate Readers Impinge Upon Americans' Civil Liberties?, Jourdin Hermann
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The boundaries that delineate public from private sphere have challenged our political system’s foundations since its origination. License plate readers (LPRs), a tool used by law enforcement and private businesses, cause citizens and their government to question the criteria separating public and private information. While police and repossession agencies contend that license plate readers aid their work, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) argues that surveillance equipment interferes with an individual’s right to privacy. Addressing such privacy concerns requires the public to hold its government accountable by petitioning for limits on LPR use and data retention. LPRs also pose unique …
Prison Privatization: Driving Influences And Performance Evaluation, Carla Schultz
Prison Privatization: Driving Influences And Performance Evaluation, Carla Schultz
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
United States conservatism and neoliberalism have created a market for prison privatization. The business of making money from incarcerated bodies is in direct conflict with the goals of the justice system. Driving economic and political forces are examined and used to explain the rising prison-industrial complex. Private prison performance is measured by recidivism, cost, inmate rights, and quality of confinement. This paper suggests that prison privatization must be reformed or abolished to improve the corrections system in the United States.
There Goes The Neighborhood: Exposing The Relationship Between Gentrification And Incarceration, Casey Kellogg
There Goes The Neighborhood: Exposing The Relationship Between Gentrification And Incarceration, Casey Kellogg
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
This paper seeks to demonstrate that there is a deliberate and intentional link between residential housing patterns and crime and mass incarceration, and that government plays a strong role in allowing and formalizing this link. Using historical examples, this paper attempts to document the role of government and policy in furthering residential segregation through the processes of gentrification and disinvestment. By contributing to the destruction of low-income communities and the invasion of gentry through covert partnerships with the private sector to develop land and design cities, government has prioritized commercial interests over the needs of the community at all income …
