Domain Specific Document Retrieval Framework On Near Real-Time Social Health Data, Swapnil Soni

Kno.e.sis Publications

With the advent of web search and microblogging, the percentage of Online Health Information Seekers (OHIS) using these services to share and seek health information in real-time has increased exponentially. Recently, Twitter has emerged as one of the primary mediums for sharing and seeking of the latest information related to a variety of topics, including health information. Although Twitter is an excellent information source, the identification of useful information from the deluge of tweets is one of the major challenges. Twitter search is limited to keyword-based techniques to retrieve information for a given query and sometimes the results do not …

Gis And Database Management: Summer 2014 Internship With The Town Of Andover, Massachusetts, Heather Marie Cormier

Sustainability and Social Justice

My internship with the Town of Andover, Massachusetts took place during May, June, and July 2014. I worked directly with one supervisor, Laura DeGroot, for all projects, which included editing GIS administrative layers (e.g. boundaries, roads, zoning and school districts, etc.), creating new maps for recycling routes and septic systems within the town, analysis of census data, GPS data collection, and template design for online hiking trail maps. This report also details the mission of the town and how my internship played a role in achieving many of the overarching goals for data availability and communication, along with a reflection …

Monitoring Invasive Plant Species: Summer Internship At Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, Belmont, Massachusetts, Holly M. Zanoni

Sustainability and Social Justice

Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Belmont, Massachusetts is a dynamic suburban sanctuary that effectively upholds Mass Audubon’s three-part mission of advocacy, conservation, and education. Invasive plants threaten ecological integrity; however, proactive measures are taken to mitigate further encroachment. This is accomplished by surveying and taking inventory for presence of invasive species, then prioritizing them, and finally by incorporating high priority species into the immediate management strategy. Four invasive plants were formally analyzed using geographic information science during the 2014 growing season: Garlic mustard, Black swallowwort, Japanese knotweed, and Dame’s Rocket. The resulting density maps detected pattern changes from 2011, 2012, …

An Investigation Of Aerobic Fitness, Perceived Quality Of Life And The Direct Effects Of Self-Determination Theory In College Students 2015, Alanna Darling

Master's Theses

There have been numerous studies examining the association between physical activity, motivation and quality of life. In contrast, studies focusing on aerobic fitness and its relationship with levels of motivation and perceived quality of life are lacking. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between a direct measure of aerobic fitness, behavioral regulations, and perceptions of quality of life in college-aged sample. Participants included both males (n=129; 21.1±1.8 years) and females (n=89; 20.8±1.4 years) who completed the Behavioral Regulations of Exercise Questionnaire-2 sub-scores and Perceived Quality of Life (PQoL) instruments. Participants then performed the Queen’s College Step …

The Relationship Between Motivation And Volunteer Satisfaction In Conservation Programs 2015., Raena Blumenthal

Master's Theses

Conservation leisure service organizations are relying more heavily on volunteers to sustain their services and protect natural resources (Strigas, 2006). However, research focusing on volunteer vacationers, those who spend money to volunteer, is still in its infancy. Drawing on functional theorizing (Bruyer & Rappe, 2007; Clary, Snyder, Ridge, Copeland, Stukas, Haugen, & Miene, 1998; Houle, Sagarin, & Kaplan, 2005; Katz, 1960; Smith, Bruner, & White, 1956), this study explored volunteer vacationers’ motivations and the relationships between motivations to volunteer, satisfaction with the volunteer vacation experience, and inclinations to volunteer in the future (in both local and nonlocal settings). The study …

The Effects Of A Visual Cue On Reaction Time, Madison Vander Wielen

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This between-subjects design study focuses on the effects of a visual cue on reaction time. Participants started the study by completing an online reaction time test and their performance was recorded. Then, they were exposed to a visual cue in the form of a 2-min video clip of a man dancing. Each participant was assigned to one of two conditions. Participants in one condition watched the video at a decreased speed (i.e., slower), whereas participants in the other watched the video at an increased speed (i.e., faster). Then, the participants were asked to complete a second online reaction time test. …

Swords Into Stethoscopes: How The U.S. Military Could Conduct Medical Diplomacy, Oliver Kendall May 2015

Swords Into Stethoscopes: How The U.S. Military Could Conduct Medical Diplomacy, Oliver Kendall

Political Science Honors Projects

Since the early 1960’s, Cuba and China have won international appreciation by sending doctors abroad to help where they are needed. While there was surprise in some quarters when U.S. military personnel were deployed to combat Ebola in the last months of 2014, the Department of Defense actually has a long history of medical activity. In its current form, DoD medical outreach cannot likely garner soft power in the way that the Chinese and Cuban programs can, but with a few modifications, the U.S. military could be a serious conductor of medical diplomacy that would save countless lives and benefit …

Spatial, Temporal And Demographical Analysis Of Gulf Of Mexico Research Priorities, The Effect Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Stephen Hiller Sempier May 2015

Spatial, Temporal And Demographical Analysis Of Gulf Of Mexico Research Priorities, The Effect Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Stephen Hiller Sempier

Dissertations

A set of twenty equally-weighted national ocean research priorities were define in 2007, but it was not clear if these priorities applied for the Gulf of Mexico. A series of three longitudinal surveys of people who conduct research, sponsor research or use research for professional or recreational purposes was released that focused on the twenty research priorities and asked people how they rated each. A convenience sampling method was employed, which suggests that the results are constrained to the survey respondents and should not be extrapolated to a larger population. More than 1,500 people completed the 2013 GMRP survey and …

Dissertations

The purpose of Crew Resource Management (CRM) is to improve flight crew coordination in multipiloted cockpits and in turn increase aviation flight safety. One aspect of CRM team coordination is the ability for flight crews to monitor each other properly and provide the appropriate backup if necessary. The author explores the role of shared mental models among Coast Guard rotary wing cockpit flight crews and their influence on monitoring and backup behaviors during nighttime overwater flight maneuvers. Using the Coast Guard’s MH-65 Operational Flight Trainer located at the Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Alabama, cockpit flight crews flew …

Assessing Nontraditional Student Dropouts On A Commuter Campus, Mary Theresa Funk May 2015

Assessing Nontraditional Student Dropouts On A Commuter Campus, Mary Theresa Funk

Dissertations

An educated population renders economic returns for the country and the workforce. The relatively large number of college and university dropouts jeopardizes the nation’s presidential education mandate to increase the percentage of adults earning a postsecondary degree by 2020. Employee demand for higher skills motivates institutions to reduce the flow of dropouts in order to increase persistence to graduation. The number of students residing off-campus is increasing causing a larger nontraditional student population. Commuter campus administrators are challenged to retain students who may have families and full-time employment. This research compared student dropouts at a traditional residential campus with nontraditional …

The "Csi Effect" And Its Potential Impact On Juror Decisions, John Alldredge May 2015

The "Csi Effect" And Its Potential Impact On Juror Decisions, John Alldredge

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The “CSI Effect” was first described in the media as a phenomenon resulting from viewing forensic and crime based television shows. This effect influences jurors to have unrealistic expectations of forensic science during a criminal trial and affect jurors’ decisions in the conviction or acquittal process. Research has shown the “CSI Effect” has a possible pro-defense bias, in that jurors are less likely to convict without the presence of some sort of forensic evidence. Some studies show actors in the criminal justice system are changing their tactics, as if this effect has a significant influence, causing them to request unnecessary …

The Psychology Of Cyberbullying As Seen Through The University Of Rhode Island, Meaghan Rose Costello May 2015

The Psychology Of Cyberbullying As Seen Through The University Of Rhode Island, Meaghan Rose Costello

Senior Honors Projects

Cyberbullying is among the most common forms of bullying in today’s American society. There has been an increase in communication through social media, texting, and other forms of technology, as well as a decrease in ‘real-life’ and interpersonal communication. Technological advances have facilitated indirect and passive aggressive forms of harassment on the internet. Many people know someone who has experienced cyberbullying, or have experienced it themselves. Bullying in general receives tremendous attention—with nonprofit groups on a mission to spread awareness and schools actively outlining detailed policies against it, children grow up understanding its repercussions. However, this form of bullying has …

Reducing Contamination In Forensic Science, Carly Balk May 2015

Reducing Contamination In Forensic Science, Carly Balk

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The sensitivity of modern forensic techniques has drastically increased, with sensitive technology detecting even the smallest traces of DNA evidence left behind. This has made it possible to detect DNA profiles deposited through contamination. When DNA contamination occurs in forensic science, it has the potential to change the outcome of a criminal investigation and may have significant social and financial repercussions. A compilation of global research shows that DNA evidence transfer can occur during forensic product manufacturing, the fingerprinting process, or even autopsy and crime lab examinations. These vital areas of the forensic investigation are vulnerable to contamination, and national …

Libraries Across The Sea: Using A Virtual Presence And Skilled Student Assistants To Serve Students Abroad, Kimberly Posin Chan, Jaimie Beth Colvin, Marc Vinyard, Claire Leach, Mary Ann Naumann, Paul Stenis

Pepperdine University Libraries

The authors discuss methods and challenges of supporting branch academic libraries overseas that are not staffed onsite by librarians or permanent staff. The authors present their two-pronged approach of creating a virtual presence carefully customized to the needs of the students studying abroad along with specially and highly trained student workers. The new program, grounded partly in theories from education and business management, is shown to have substantially improved both library services for our study abroad students as well as library student workers’ performance.

Energy Poverty And Justice: Using Renewable Energy In Marginalized Countries To Overcome Climate Change And Support Human Development, Drema Khraibani May 2015

Energy Poverty And Justice: Using Renewable Energy In Marginalized Countries To Overcome Climate Change And Support Human Development, Drema Khraibani

Sustainability and Social Justice

Energy poverty is limited to no access to affordable, reliable, and efficient form of energy. Currently, there are 1.3 billion people living in energy poverty, being deprived of their basic need. Providing access to a billion people has become a global goal and movement for energy justice. With IPCC warning about global fossil fuel consumption, energy development has moved towards renewable options. Renewable energy provides those previously without access an ability to meet rudimentary needs. It can uplift communities and families from extreme poverty by easing their labor and extending the time they have to work after dark. Renewable energy …

Resident Advisors React: Autoethnographic Reflections On High-Intensity Situations, Brenna A. Merrill May 2015

Resident Advisors React: Autoethnographic Reflections On High-Intensity Situations, Brenna A. Merrill

Sustainability and Social Justice

Resident Advisors (RAs) are paraprofessional peer leaders who are trained to respond to high-intensity incidents. Upon witnessing a crisis situation, I found it difficult to reflect and maintain my own personal wellness. The intent of this research has been to learn of and to give voice to the multiple ways in which RAs respond to such scenarios.

Utilizing autoethnography, I incorporate my experience with the perspectives of my coworkers and multidisciplinary literature. Seven current RAs, who had self-identified experiencing such an incident, volunteered to be interviewed. These narratives are embodied in the text in order to establish a dialogue between …
