Awareness And Perception Of Copyright Among Teaching Faculty At Canadian Universities, Lisa Di Valentino May 2015

Awareness And Perception Of Copyright Among Teaching Faculty At Canadian Universities, Lisa Di Valentino

FIMS Presentations

In this talk I discuss the results of a survey of Canadian university faculty members undertaken from October to December 2014. The survey sought to determine teaching faculty awareness of copyright law and institutional policy and training, and how they would respond in various scenarios.

Analysis of the results suggests that while faculty members are aware of the existence of their institution's copyright policy, much fewer know whether their institution offers training. Of those who do know about training, only one-third have attended. However, faculty who have attended copyright training find that their knowledge is enhanced by the experience.

It …

Public Stigma In College Students Diagnosed With Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Kristen Pyke May 2015

Public Stigma In College Students Diagnosed With Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Kristen Pyke

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Previous research has examined both ADHD and public stigma as well as ADHD and malingering in college students. Nonetheless, to date, no research has examined all three variables simultaneously. To explore these relationships, we investigated college students’ opinions of ADHD and hypothesized that there will be a hierarchical pattern of public stigma: typical college students will report the most while college students with ADHD will report the least and the malingering group will fall between the two. The participants consisted of 106 undergraduate students that completed a questionnaire that was developed to assess opinions of mental health diagnoses (depression, ADHD), …

Mass Shootings And Mental Illness Perception, Sierra M. Korb May 2015

Mass Shootings And Mental Illness Perception, Sierra M. Korb

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This study focused on the relationship between mass shootings and mental illness stigma. Specifically, this study looks at how learning about mass shootings affects the extent to which people with mental illness are stigmatized. Participants were asked to read a short story and then answer survey questions about their opinions of the mentally ill. The main finding of this study was that participant’s preferred greater social distance from people with mental illness after learning about mass shootings, even when it was not explicitly mentioned that the shooter was a person with mental illness.

Gold Mining And Unequal Exchange In Western Amazonia: A Theoretical Photo Essay, Gordon L. Ulmer May 2015

Gold Mining And Unequal Exchange In Western Amazonia: A Theoretical Photo Essay, Gordon L. Ulmer

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

I combine fieldwork photography and ethnographic documentation of gold mining in Madre de Dios, Peru, to examine the localized material, social, environmental, and health outcomes of the global gold boom. This 'theoretical photo essay’ examines how local and global forces coalesce around gold mining and influence peoples and environments in Western Amazonia. I use embodiment theory in anthropology, ecological economics, and theories of underdevelopment to understand local consequences of the global gold trade and to elucidate how opulence and the machinations of capital accumulation in economic centers of the world occur at the expense of human lives and environments in …

A Town Without A Market, Saakshi Joshi May 2015

A Town Without A Market, Saakshi Joshi

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

The story is an attempt at experimental writing narrated through the perspective of the market of a drowned town. It is based on my on-going ethnographic doctoral research in the Garhwal region of the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, India. The construction of a hydro-electric dam in the region led to the complete submergence of a central town and thirty-five villages while seventy-four villages were partially submerged. Nearly one hundred thousand people were affected, leading to forced displacement and subsequent re-settlement across the state. The market remembers its life as it now sits at the bottom of the dam reservoir.

Race Vs. Class: Is The Market Colorblind?, David Luke May 2015

Race Vs. Class: Is The Market Colorblind?, David Luke

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

For decades, social scientists have debated the nature of inequality in the United States. A false dichotomy of race versus class is a common way of interpreting this. This brief article provides a detailed review of some of the important literature on racial and social class equality, as well as a view of current levels of inequality and the trends exacerbated in the market failure and Great Recession of 2008. Ultimately, this review results in policy recommendations to address the gap, and challenges the claims that the various "markets" in the United States are colorblind.

A Gendered Analysis Of A Movement For Microloans: Problematizing The Micro-Craze In The Developing World, Rebecca Lynne Waghorne

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Microcredit lending is a practice that has become increasingly common, as people and economic institutions hail its ability to offer economic opportunities to people in the developing world. The practice of lending small amounts to individuals or groups began with the creation of the Grameen Bank, and has since become considered one of the best tools for the economic empowerment of women in the so-called Global South. To best understand the potential, or lack thereof, of microlending practices to enable the further empowerment of women in terms of their economic and social status, I hope to break down the terminology …

Ruth's First, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

A hundred years ago, Babe Ruth strode to the plate and cracked his first major league home run on May 5, 1915. Twenty years later he would hit No. 714, a milestone that would stand for generations. 712, 713, and 714 came in Pittsburgh a few weeks before his retirement, and 714 was the first ball ever hit over the roof of Forbes Field in right, and it came to rest in a small park across the street. It was the longest home run, some would say, of his career.

Moving The Needle On Justice Reform: A Report On The American Justice Summit 2014, Daniel L. Stageman, Robert Riggs, Jonathan Gordon, Ethiraj G. Dattatreyan

Publications and Research

Executive Summary: Taking place over 5 hours during the afternoon of November 10th, 2014, in John Jay College’s Gerald W. Lynch Theater, the American Justice Summit was an unprecedented public meeting of some of the most important individuals working in contemporary criminal justice reform. The event placed these individuals in front of an audience of six hundred-odd practitioners, activists, students, elected officials, and policy professionals, in conversation with leading journalists and each other, to describe the scope and contours of the problems posed by the country’s dysfunctional and interlocking systems of criminal justice – mass incarceration, police-community relations, the system’s …

The Ability Of Narrative Communication To Address Health-Related Social Norms, Meghan B. Moran, Sheila T. Murphy, Lauren B. Frank, Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati May 2015

The Ability Of Narrative Communication To Address Health-Related Social Norms, Meghan B. Moran, Sheila T. Murphy, Lauren B. Frank, Lourdes Baezconde-Garbanati

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Social norms are an important predictor of health behavior and have been targeted by a variety of health communication campaigns. However, these campaigns often encounter challenges related to the socially specific context in which norms exist: specifically, the extent to which the target population identifies with the specific reference group depicted and the extent to which the target population believes the campaign’s message. We argue that because of its capacity to effect identification among viewers, narrative communication is particularly appropriate for impacting social norms and, consequently, behavioral intention. This manuscript presents the results of a randomized trial testing the effectiveness …

Developing Community Reinforcement And Family Training (Craft) For Parents Of Treatment-Resistant Adolescents., Kimberly C Kirby, Brian Versek, Mary Louise Kerwin, Kathleen Meyers, Lois A Benishek, Elena Bresani, Yukiko Washio, Amelia Arria, Robert J Meyers

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

We describe a project focused on training parents to facilitate their treatment-resistant adolescent's treatment entry and to manage their child after entry into community-based treatment. Controlled studies show that Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is a unilateral treatment that fosters treatment entry of adults; however, there are no controlled trials for parents with a substance-abusing child. We examined the behavioral parent training literature to guide us in tailoring CRAFT for parents of adolescents. We discuss adaptations to CRAFT, outcomes and experiences gained from a brief pilot of the revised CRAFT program, and the future directions of this work.

Getting On The Agenda: The Influence Of Local Civil Society Organizations During Pre-Negotiation, David R. Andersen-Rodgers May 2015

Getting On The Agenda: The Influence Of Local Civil Society Organizations During Pre-Negotiation, David R. Andersen-Rodgers

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This article examines the types of strategies that different local civil society organizations use to get their issues addressed during a peace negotiation. Previous research has shown that the inclusion of civil society groups in a negotiation improves the likelihood for a durable peace. This paper argues that during conflict civil society organizations make a number of strategic choices that then affect their ability to get their societal interests placed on the agenda. These strategies are partially dictated by when and why the civil society group organized, the levels and types of advocacy that they choose to engage in during …

Poverty Measurement: A Social Work Perspective, Katelyn David

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The purpose of this study is to determine the information given to BSW students about poverty measurement and alternative measures via standard social work textbooks. Poverty measurement is rarely discussed in the national conversation about poverty in the United States. The poverty rate, guidelines and threshold are regularly used by policy makers and communicated to the public, but the formulas behind the calculations of these measures are not well known. The calculations of these measures are based on outdated assumptions and have not been updated in more than half a century. This study presents a literature review on poverty measurement …

Illusory Correlations In Mental Illness Stigma, Katrina Aberizk May 2015

Illusory Correlations In Mental Illness Stigma, Katrina Aberizk

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The purpose of this research is to examine people’s readiness to form an association between those diagnosed with a mental health condition and negative behavior in the absence of objective evidence for that association. The research expands on a traditional illusory correlation paradigm to include social group information and two types of negative behavioral statements. The traditional paradigm exposes research participants to a series of statements describing the behaviors of members of two different social groups, including desirable and undesirable behaviors, and participants are then required to recall behavioral information and rank members of both groups on a series of …
