Citizenship, Politics And Process: A Cross National Study Of Citizenship Regimes, Marisha Lina Lecea Jun 2015

Citizenship, Politics And Process: A Cross National Study Of Citizenship Regimes, Marisha Lina Lecea

Dissertations

Citizenship policy is important for democracies and for the people who live in them. Citizenship status is important for the individual enjoyment of social, political and human rights, and restricting access to citizenship can hamper a state’s enjoyment of legitimacy and stability. Across democracies, citizenship policies range from no allowance for dual nationality and very onerous naturalization policies, to acceptance of dual nationality and non-capricious paths to naturalization. The question of this dissertation is what accounts for the variation in citizenship regimes across democracies?

I argue that it is domestic politics through party in power, judicial review and strength of …

Opportunistic Uses Of The Traditional School Day Through Student Examination Of Fitbit Activity Tracker Data, Victor R. Lee, Joel R. Drake, Ryan Cain, Jeffrey L. Thayne Jun 2015

Opportunistic Uses Of The Traditional School Day Through Student Examination Of Fitbit Activity Tracker Data, Victor R. Lee, Joel R. Drake, Ryan Cain, Jeffrey L. Thayne

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

In large part due to the highly prescribed nature of the typical school day for children, efforts to design new interactions with technology have often focused on less-structured after-school clubs and other out-of-school environments. We argue that while the school day imposes serious restrictions, school routines can and should be opportunistically leveraged by designers and by youth. Specifically, wearable activity tracking devices open some new avenues for opportunistic collection of and reflection on data from the school day. To demonstrate this, we present two cases from an elementary statistics classroom unit we designed that intentionally integrated wearable activity trackers and …

The Effects Of Varied Opportunities To Respond Embedded In A Group Contingency Program, Teresa Donna Bolt Jun 2015

The Effects Of Varied Opportunities To Respond Embedded In A Group Contingency Program, Teresa Donna Bolt

Student Works

This study investigated the effects of using a group contingency program with three students with disabilities in a small group special education setting. These students exhibited both academic and behavioral difficulties. With the use of Class Wide Function-Related Intervention Team (CW-FIT) students increased their active engagement and correct responses, as well as decreased their disruptive behaviors; however, these behaviors did not maintain over time. CW-FIT with high opportunities to respond showed an even greater improvement than CW-FIT with low opportunities to respond. Increased opportunities to respond resulted in higher levels of active engagement and correct responses and decreases in disruptive …

  • Government priorities were targeted toward prevention and early eradication, but also included ongoing actions for biodiversity …

Effects Of Monetary Policy On The Banking System Stability In Nigeria, A. Bamidele, J. Musa, L. Bala-Keffi, O. Owolabi, S. Imam Jun 2015

Effects Of Monetary Policy On The Banking System Stability In Nigeria, A. Bamidele, J. Musa, L. Bala-Keffi, O. Owolabi, S. Imam

Economic and Financial Review

The paper examined the effect of monetary policy on banking system stability in Nigeria. The main objective was to evaluate how monetary policy affected the banking system stability during the global financial crisis in Nigeria. Static and dynamic error correction models were estimated using monthly data from January 2007 to June 2013 and the error correction model was found most efficient. The banking system stability index was computed using banking soundness index, banking vulnerability index and economic climate index. The results showed that increase in monetary policy rate, depreciation of nominal exchange rate and rising inflation rate negatively affected the …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Effect Of Monetary Policy On The Manufacturing Sector In Nigeria, M. Ali, H. Aliero, M. Abubakar Jun 2015

An Empirical Analysis Of The Effect Of Monetary Policy On The Manufacturing Sector In Nigeria, M. Ali, H. Aliero, M. Abubakar

Economic and Financial Review

This study examined the effect of monetary policy on the manufacturing sector in Nigeria from 1970 to 2012 using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bound testing approach. Exchange rate was found as the only channel of monetary policy transmission with significantly negative effect on the manufacturing sector. This implies that manufacturing firms largely rely on foreign inputs for production and do not depend on the banking system for funding. The study, therefore, recommends indigenous technology and financial system development to reduce dependence on imported inputs and facilitate access to more funds.

Factors Explaining Exchange Rate Volatility In Nigeria: Theory And Empirical Evidence, H. E. Oaikhenan, O. S. Aigheyisi Jun 2015

Factors Explaining Exchange Rate Volatility In Nigeria: Theory And Empirical Evidence, H. E. Oaikhenan, O. S. Aigheyisi

Economic and Financial Review

The study empirically investigated the factors explaining the volatility of the bilateral exchange rate of the naira to the U.S. dollar, using data for 1970-2013 period. The EGARCH (1.1) modeling technique was used. The empirical evidence indicated that volatility of the naira exchange rate was characterised by clustering, strong leverage effect and moderate degree of persistence. It was found that increased net capital flows, greater integration of the Nigerian economy into the global market, deepening of the nation’s financial system, favourable crude oil prices, increase in the level of external reserves as well as economic growth were germane to dampening …

Longitudinal Association Between Self-Esteem In Adolescence And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Older Adults: A Cohort Study, John Anthony Blue Star Jun 2015

Longitudinal Association Between Self-Esteem In Adolescence And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Older Adults: A Cohort Study, John Anthony Blue Star

Student Works

Background: Posttraumatic-Stress Disorder (PTSD) is less common in older adults than in younger adults, and little is known about specific risk factors for PTSD in older adults. We investigated the association between self-esteem in late adolescence and PTSD in older adults. Method: Using a cohort design, 1,436 individuals who had been assessed approximately 40 years earlier in their junior and senior year of high school with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) were evaluated for PTSD using the PTSD Checklist (PCL-17). Results: Fully controlled logistic regression models indicated that lower self-esteem in late adolescence predicted PTSD in the overall sample of …

Sources And Impact Of Excess Liquidity On Monetary Policy In Nigeria, S. A. Ukeje, D. Amanze, L. Akinboyo, K. Ajayi Jun 2015

Sources And Impact Of Excess Liquidity On Monetary Policy In Nigeria, S. A. Ukeje, D. Amanze, L. Akinboyo, K. Ajayi

Economic and Financial Review

This paper examined the sources and effects of excess liquidity in the Nigerian banking system. The Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria do not hold voluntary reserve over and above the required reserve for precautionary reasons depending on their risk appetite. The practice over the years has been that DMBs constrained themselves by holding involuntary reserve which is a major concerns to the monetary authorities. The ideal situation is that banks should deploy excess reserves as loans to the public and invest in government securities, but on the contrary this is not done based on the profit maximisation tendencies of …

Disaster Relief And Psychological First Aid, Jenny Haeyeon Cho Jun 2015

Disaster Relief And Psychological First Aid, Jenny Haeyeon Cho

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Many organizations that assist in the aftermath of disasters often do not provide psychological relief. Although people tend to be rather resilient in the face of traumatic events, the psychological distress and possible psychopathology that can ensue should not be taken lightly. This manual was created to be used as a training tool for those involved in disaster relief and aid work. A review of the literature, mental health disorders, basic information about disasters, common stress reactions, and Psychological First Aid are included. Although Psychological First Aid has not really been systematically studied, it appears to be promising in aiding …

Weight Stigma As A Mediator Among Bmi, Childhood Overweight, Body Image And Depression, Serena D. Stevens Jun 2015

Weight Stigma As A Mediator Among Bmi, Childhood Overweight, Body Image And Depression, Serena D. Stevens

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Higher body mass index (BMI), childhood overweight, and weight stigmatization are correlated with depression and body dissatisfaction. Given that overweight/obese individuals are likely to experience significant weight stigma, the goal of the current study was to examine the effects of current weight and childhood overweight on depression and body dissatisfaction, and to examine weight stigmatization as a mediator in these relationships. Participants were 380 undergraduate students from the University of South Florida (84.5% female) with a mean age of 21.18 (SD = 4.32) and a mean BMI of 23.86 (SD = 5.03). Of these students, 53.4% were White, 24.7% were …

Psychological Services For Pediatric Victims Of Non Accidental Trauma, Robyn Finckbone Jun 2015

Psychological Services For Pediatric Victims Of Non Accidental Trauma, Robyn Finckbone

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Child abuse is a significant problem within our society. In 2010, there were approximately 1,560 fatalities as a result of child abuse; 17.6% of those deaths were the direct result of physical abuse and 80% occurred in children under the age of 4. There is a dearth of research examining severe physical abuse among children and, as a result, the demographics of this population are unclear as are the psychological referrals and services provided to these children. The aims of the current study are to identify the demographic characteristics of child victims of non-accidental trauma (NAT, i.e. physical abuse) as …

Relationship Among Psychotherapy Measurements: Predictors Of Ors And Oq-45 Scores, Evan Lima Jun 2015

Relationship Among Psychotherapy Measurements: Predictors Of Ors And Oq-45 Scores, Evan Lima

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Psychological services have become increasingly important and accepted. The increase in the utilization of services has led to third party payers (e.g., insurance companies) paying more in reimbursement to providers of psychological services and therefore tightening parameters regarding how many sessions will be reimbursed. With the pressure from third party payers, a standardized means of monitoring client’s progress in treatment has become necessary. The goal of the current study was to determine whether (1) the trajectories of Outcome Questionnaire 45 (OQ-45) and Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) scores are the same over time, and if the Session Rating Scale (SRS) predicts …

Legal Marriage, Civil Unions, Registered Domestic Partnership And Well-Being Among Same-Sex Couples, Naomi J. Schwenke Jun 2015

Legal Marriage, Civil Unions, Registered Domestic Partnership And Well-Being Among Same-Sex Couples, Naomi J. Schwenke

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This dissertation used a quantitative method of analysis to explore well-being among couples with different types of legal unions: legal marriage, civil unions, registered domestic partnership. Specifically, this study examined individual, relational, social, and familial components of well-being. Individuals in legally recognized same-sex relationships were recruited for this study. Participants were asked to complete an internet-based survey. Social constructionism provided the theoretical framework for this study. Results show differences among individuals in legally married unions compared to individuals in all other forms of legal unions on measures of satisfaction with life, psychological and physical well-being. Additionally, the results show strong …

Gender, Power, And Trust Issues In Couple Therapy With Adult-Survivor Couples, Melissa A. Wells Jun 2015

Gender, Power, And Trust Issues In Couple Therapy With Adult-Survivor Couples, Melissa A. Wells

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although one-third of partners in couple therapy have experienced childhood abuse, our field has developed few specific interventions that address the lingering effects of child abuse on current couple dynamics. A common impact on adult survivors is the struggle to trust their intimate partner. Furthermore, asymmetrical gendered power processes often erode trust. Given the propensity for adult-survivor couples to experience a distrusting emotional culture, this dissertation studied the effect of gendered power dynamics on trust in partner interactions, as well as identified clinical processes of Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT) that helped adult-survivor couples change power disparities to a mutually supportive …

Cultural Beliefs And Self-Efficacy In Diet Adherence Among Type 2 Diabetics, Sonika Kravann Ung Jun 2015

Cultural Beliefs And Self-Efficacy In Diet Adherence Among Type 2 Diabetics, Sonika Kravann Ung

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is a global epidemic that disproportionately affects socioeconomic and ethnic minority populations (International Diabetes Federation, 2013). Mapuches, the largest Native American population in Chile, shifted from the lowest incidence of T2D to equal rates in comparison to mainstream Chileans within a decade (King & Rewers, 1991; Perez-Bravo et al., 2001). This may be due to economic growth and rapid nutritional shifts (Yu & Zinman, 2007). Previous research has identified the importance of cultural beliefs in explaining health behavior (Betancourt, Flynn, & Ormseth, 2011). This study, guided by Betancourt’s Integrative Model for Culture, Psychological Factors and Behavior …
