Anthropology Faculty Research

Through human microbiome sequencing, we can better understand how host evolutionary and ontogenetic history is reflected in the microbial function. However, there has been no information on the gut metagenome configuration in hunter-gatherer populations, posing a gap in our knowledge of gut microbiota (GM)-host mutualism arising from a lifestyle that describes over 90% of human evolutionary history. Here, we present the first metagenomic analysis of GM from Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania, showing a unique enrichment in metabolic pathways that aligns with the dietary and environmental factors characteristic of their foraging lifestyle. We found that the Hadza GM is adapted for …

Mystery To History: An Uncommon Way To Teach The Common Core, Reneé C. Lyons, Deborah Parrott Jun 2015

Mystery To History: An Uncommon Way To Teach The Common Core, Reneé C. Lyons, Deborah Parrott

ETSU Faculty Works

With the transition to Common Core, school librarians are called to collaborate with teachers as well as to provide library media instruction for the preparation of our students in college and career readiness. How do we assist our teachers with Common Core instruction while preserving our love of fiction? How do we achieve Common Core Standards in our own instruction while sharing our treasured stories? Although Common Core focuses on informational text, there are numerous ways in which we can incorporate fiction as well as nonfiction into the curriculum.

The Effects Of Sleep-Dependent Memory Consolidation On The Discriminability And Generalizability Of Learning, Bengt Grua, Dr. C Brock Kirwan Jun 2015

The Effects Of Sleep-Dependent Memory Consolidation On The Discriminability And Generalizability Of Learning, Bengt Grua, Dr. C Brock Kirwan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The goal of this study was to determine how sleep affects memory recall in an academic setting with relation to memory discrimination and memory generalization. Memory generalization depends on the computational process of pattern completion, which is the brain’s ability to retrieve a memory representation based on a partial or modified stimulus (such as viewing a false statement as true if it has many true elements embedded in it). Memory discrimination depends on the computational process of pattern separation, which is the brain’s ability to store a memory as distinct and separate from other, similar memories. Current models of sleep …

Change Over Time Of White Matter Hyperintensities And Cognitive Scores In The Cache County Memory And Aging Study, Zachary Mcdonnell, Dr. Erin Bigler Jun 2015

Change Over Time Of White Matter Hyperintensities And Cognitive Scores In The Cache County Memory And Aging Study, Zachary Mcdonnell, Dr. Erin Bigler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Cache County Study on Memory in Aging (CCMA) includes a sample of over 400 individuals with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (Bigler et al., 2000). Studies have shown that White Matter Hyperintensities (WMH) on MRIs are associated with not only cognitive decline, but degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease (Philip Scheltens et al., 1998). A common and widely used clinical rating method for identifying WMH is the Scheltens Rating Scale (PH Scheltens et al., 1993). This scale rates WMH, Grey Matter Hyperintensities (GMH), Periventricular White Matter Hyperintensities (PWM), and Infratentorial Signal Hyperintensites (IFH) in a semi-quantitative scale that can be easily …

A Case Study Illustrating The Importance Of Educating The Whole Person By Using The Arts As A Supplementary Training Tool In Workplace Learning, Matilda Mettälä

The Qualitative Report

From a humanistic, learner-centered view this practical case study involving Tetra Pak, a world leadingfood processing and packaging solution company, explores the role of emotion in learning and the arts as a supplementary training tool by describing and interpreting their new employee orientation trainings based on the facilitator’s accounts. This case will illustrate the added value the arts contribute as well as the need to include the whole person-concept in workplace learning. This case does not suggest an exact design with specifications of how this kind of training should be conducted, but rather this specific study will offer additional knowledgeby exemplifying …

Trying Not To Lie...And Failing: Autoethnography, Memory, Malleability, John Freeman Jun 2015

Trying Not To Lie...And Failing: Autoethnography, Memory, Malleability, John Freeman

The Qualitative Report

All research is experiential, whether this is the experience of reading in the library or observing in the field. Autoethnographers take experience into narratives and are themselves key participants in their research, and often also its subject. For autoethnographers the idea of research as a neutral process is abandoned in favour of a self-reflective form that explores the researcher's perspective on the subject in question. Autoethnography inevitably negotiates the relationship between the stories we want to tell and the histories we have lived through; between the necessary fictions of publication/presentation and the real world experiences we draw upon. This article …

A Phenomenological Multi-Case Study About Social Success Skills, Aspirations, And Related Media Experiences, Darnel Degand Jun 2015

A Phenomenological Multi-Case Study About Social Success Skills, Aspirations, And Related Media Experiences, Darnel Degand

The Qualitative Report

The social success skills valued and ultimately acquired by youth during their formative years can be better understood by examining the social spaces, processes, and interactions that are related to their personal aspirations and related media experiences. Using a phenomenological approach, I conducted a year-long multi-case study about two Black male high school students’ thoughts on social success, their aspirations, their social experiences, and their experiences with media. The participants were selected using purposeful sampling. I collected data through semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and observations. I performed analyses by using the hermeneutic cycle which requires one to repeatedly read text, …

Recipes For Success: Comparing Ala-Accredited Mlis Programs, Mandi Goodsett Jun 2015

Recipes For Success: Comparing Ala-Accredited Mlis Programs, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Discussion about the MLIS degree and what could be done to produce well-prepared new librarians for the workforce abounds in the current literature. As the ALA Committee on Accreditation re-evaluates its standards, and frustrated librarians continue to add to the over 150 comments on the Library Journal editorial "Can We Talk about the MLS?" by Michael Kelley, the time to re-evaluate the MLIS degree has arrived. In order to effectively move forward, however, a gap in the literature must be addressed: an overview of the MLIS as it currently stands is needed. This dataset presents information about the current requirements, …

Casting A Wider Net: Student Research In The Ir, Betty Rozum, Becky Thoms, Scott Bates, Danielle M. Barandiaran

Library Faculty & Staff Presentations

Student research is an untapped commodity. A survey of 238 Institutional Repositories in 2013 indicated that only 38% collect student research other than theses and dissertations. We think student research is a potential goldmine. Do other librarians agree? What about stake holders outside of the library? And, what are the obstacles preventing more robust collection of student research? Includes breakdown of repositories by platform.

Applying Rda To Contentdm & Islandora, Sai Deng

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Resource Description and Access (RDA) standard has been widely implemented in integrated library systems and its application with MARC has long been discussed, but its applicability in content and digital asset management systems and with non-MARC standards hasn't been much addressed. The national RDA non-MARC tests found that it is not easy to evaluate RDA "without an application available to aptly manage and display the data," however, to accommodate RDA in existing content and digital asset management systems still remains an issue. This presentation will address how RDA has been applied in cataloging and migrating digital materials in CONTENTdm …

Leadership And Motivation For Public Goods Contributions, Bryan C. Mccannon Jun 2015

Leadership And Motivation For Public Goods Contributions, Bryan C. Mccannon

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Results from a leader-follower public goods game are presented. An individual, when randomly-selected to make a contribution knowing that others will observe the selection, gives more than one does in the simultaneous-move public goods game. Followers adopt a quasi-matching strategy where they systematically donate less than the leader, but contribute more when the leader does and contribute less when the leader free rides. The net result is increased provision of a public good when contributions are sequential. The results highlight that psychological preferences, rather than solely social preferences, can explain behavior.

Bridging The Gap Between Library Services In Academic Libraries Worldwide: A Visiting Librarian Model, Ying Zhang, Sai Deng, Jing Xu Jun 2015

Bridging The Gap Between Library Services In Academic Libraries Worldwide: A Visiting Librarian Model, Ying Zhang, Sai Deng, Jing Xu

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The colleges and universities in the U.S. have experienced a surge in international students and studying abroad programs. As the higher education community expands globally, the needs for bridging the gaps in academic libraries worldwide and creating more comparable library services grow exponentially. One large university library in the U.S. attempts to meet these needs through a visiting librarian program, where a librarian from a large top-rated Chinese academic library is hosted for a year. This program represents a model different from the traditional visiting librarian programs that tend to be project focused. In this model, broad based learning and …

Looking For Two-Sided Coattail Effects: Integrated Parties And Multilevel Elections In The U.S., Amuitz Garmendia Madariaga, H. Ege Ozen

Publications and Research

In the context of the American federalism, integrated parties provide the necessary coordination mechanism for state and federal politicians to be electorally successful. This argument rests on the assumption that voters are able to observe the benefits of voting a straight ticket. We test this individual level explanation by using the CCES data. Moreover, at the aggregate level, we measure the so-called ‘two-sided’ coattail effects in concurrent multilevel elections in the U.S. since 1960. By using a simultaneous equation model, we estimate the reciprocal relationship between presidential and gubernatorial vote shares at the state level. While we find no consistent …

Creating Effective Instructional Materials With I-Learn, Stacey Greenwell

Library Presentations

Given the proliferation of information and the lifelong importance of information literacy and critical thinking skills, librarians need to know how to best design information literacy instructional materials in order to help students locate, evaluate, and use information effectively. This poster builds upon an experimental research study conducted to determine how instructional materials designed using the I-LEARN model could increase student understanding and application of information literacy concepts. The findings from the research study show that I-LEARN can be particularly valuable in designing online course guides and provides an easy-to-use framework for developing reusable guide content.

Lakeside View: Sociocultural Responses To Changing Water Levels Of Lake Turkana, Kenya, David K. Wright, Steven L. Forman, Purity Kiura, Christopher Bloszies, Amanuel Beyin

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Throughout the Holocene, Lake Turkana has been subject to drastic changes in lake levels and the subsistence strategies people employ to survive in this hot and arid region. In this paper, we reconstruct the position of the lake during the Holocene within a paleoclimatic context. Atmospheric forcing mechanisms are discussed in order to contextualize the broader landscape changes occurring in eastern Africa over the last 12,000 years. The Holocene is divided into five primary phases according to changes in the strand-plain evolution, paleoclimate, and human subsistence strategies practiced within the basin. Early Holocene fishing settlements occurred adjacent to high and …
