Publication Trends In Library Reserves: A Quantitative Content Analysis, Denise Dimsdale
Georgia Library Quarterly
A quantitative content analysis of abstracts on the topic of library reserves in the databases Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA), Library Literature and Information Science Index (LLI), and Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) was conducted in order to identify subtopics and research trends over time. Seven of the most frequent library reserves subtopics were identified: electronic reserves, implementation, physical reserves, evaluation, E-Reserves software, copyright, and learning management systems. Results indicate that library reserve related topics appear slowly in the early literature and begin to drop off in frequency in 2008.

Surviving The Crisis And Austerity: The Coping Strategies Of Portuguese Households, Catarina F. Frade, Lina Coelho
Surviving The Crisis And Austerity: The Coping Strategies Of Portuguese Households, Catarina F. Frade, Lina Coelho
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
In recent years, Southern European households have been facing acute economic hardship involving falling incomes, rising unemployment, devalued investment portfolios, and a growing burden of debt. This means most households have been forced to make unusual adjustments to their expenditure and living standards. However, Portuguese society has revealed the capacity to deal with austerity through the way households are resorting to self-mobilization and solidarity-based strategies. These adjustment strategies are inscribed in a cultural framework in which familial values, prevalent in Southern European societies, stand out in supporting a strong, operative welfare society. This feature is confirmed hereby through empirical research …

Governing New Jersey: Reflections On The Publication Of A Revised And Expanded Edition Of 'The Governors Of New Jersey', Michael J. Birkner
Governing New Jersey: Reflections On The Publication Of A Revised And Expanded Edition Of 'The Governors Of New Jersey', Michael J. Birkner
History Faculty Publications
New Jersey’s chief executive enjoys more authority than any but a handful of governors in the United States. Historically speaking, however, New Jersey’s governors exercised less influence than met the eye. In the colonial period few proprietary or royal governors were able to make policy in the face of combative assemblies. The Revolutionary generation’s hostility to executive power contributed to a weak governor system that carried over into the 19th and 20th centuries, until the Constitution was thoroughly revised in 1947. Before that date a handful of governors, by dint of their ideas and personalities, affected the polity in meaningful …
Charter Schools As A Choice For Missouri Families, Amanda N. Aldridge
Charter Schools As A Choice For Missouri Families, Amanda N. Aldridge
Missouri Policy Journal
Charter schools are publically funded, non-sectarian, tuition-free organizations that educate students. The charter model was created to allow schools to remain free from some governmental regulations and to offer parents a tuition-free choice for K-12 education. Across the country, millions of students attend charter schools, and another million remain on waiting lists to get into these schools. Ultimately, charter schools attract families that have similar belief systems and missions as the school claims, and again, offer parents a choice in public education. High quality educational options that provide a safe and nurturing environment for students and encourage personal growth and …
A Cardinal That Does Not Look That Red: Analysis Of A Political Polarization Trend In The St. Louis Area, Clémence Nogret-Pradier
A Cardinal That Does Not Look That Red: Analysis Of A Political Polarization Trend In The St. Louis Area, Clémence Nogret-Pradier
Missouri Policy Journal
The political polarization of metropolitan areas is occurring widely within the United States. By highlighting the political polarization that has been underway for decades in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin metropolitan area, this can serve as a way to understand political polarization within the St Louis metropolitan area. This article uses political and demographic data from the Missouri Information Spatial Data Information Service to take a close look at developments in the St Louis metropolitan area. Geographic Information System (GIS) was used and the maps were created using Archmap. The results suggest that political polarization is occurring within the St Louis metropolitan …

Access to health-care information for citizens is a key determinant to reach both the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the emerging post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals, but this challenge has repeatedly been relegated to the sidelines.1 What might kickstart progress? An obvious candidate is the mobile phone, which is becoming ubiquitous in low-income and middle-income countries.
Lawyering Wars: Failing Leadership, Risk Aversion, And Lawyer Creep—Should We Expect More Lone Survivors?, Arthur Rizer
Lawyering Wars: Failing Leadership, Risk Aversion, And Lawyer Creep—Should We Expect More Lone Survivors?, Arthur Rizer
Indiana Law Journal
“We are a nation of laws, not men.” This motto—made famous by the Supreme Court case Marbury v. Madison1—has existed since the founding of the United States. This maxim embodies the sentiment that, in order to prevent tyranny, citizens should be governed by fixed law rather than the whims of a dictator. In his decision, Chief Justice John Marshall did not qualify his remarks by saying, “we are a nation of laws, except in time of war.” Indeed with the modern U.S. military, Cicero’s observation that “[l]aws are inoperative in war” has never been further from the truth. Never before …

The Impact Of A Ballot Education Program On Arkansas Voters, Kristin Netterstrom Higgins
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The University of Arkansas Division Of Agriculture’s Public Policy Center has educated Arkansas voters about statewide ballot issues for 10 years. The ballot issue education program, was evaluated during the 2014 election cycle to determine the program’s impact on voters. This descriptive study sought to describe program participants, to determine knowledge transfer of county agents, to describe knowledge acquisition of program participants, and to measure whether people who attended Cooperative Extension Service presentations made informed choices on Election Day. Researchers found that program participants were mostly older, educated, White women. There were increases in knowledge among participants who read fact …
The Educational Benefits Of Cultural Institutions, Brian Kisida
The Educational Benefits Of Cultural Institutions, Brian Kisida
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A significant portion of the education children receive occurs outside of the traditional classroom and produces outcomes not typically captured by standardized achievement tests. This dissertation is part of an effort to expand the educational venues and outcomes educational researchers rigorously examine. In particular, I present the key results from experimental studies of the effects of school tours to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AR., and to the Museum of Discovery in Little Rock, AR.
Chapter 1 focuses on arts exposure and critical thinking outcomes. A problem for the arts’ role in education has been a …
The Effectiveness Of Cash Transfers As A Policy Instrument In K-16 Education, Jonathan Norman Mills
The Effectiveness Of Cash Transfers As A Policy Instrument In K-16 Education, Jonathan Norman Mills
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cash transfers, defined as direct transfers of purchasing power from an institution or individual to another individual, are an increasingly popular policy instrument both abroad and in the United States. This dissertation investigates how two educational interventions utilizing cash transfers affect participating students. The first, the Louisiana Scholarship Program, is a statewide program offering publicly financed scholarships for low income students attending poorly performing public schools to attend K-12 private schools. The second program, the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, is a state financed broad-based merit-aid scholarship for students in college within the state of Arkansas. In general, the results presented …
Lithium In Drinking Water And Suicide Mortality: Interplay With Lithium Prescriptions, Marco Helbich, Michael Leitner, Nestor D. Kapusta
Lithium In Drinking Water And Suicide Mortality: Interplay With Lithium Prescriptions, Marco Helbich, Michael Leitner, Nestor D. Kapusta
Faculty Publications
Background: Little is known about the effects of lithium intake through drinking water on suicide. This intake originates either from natural rock and soil elution and/or accumulation of lithium-based pharmaceuticals in ground water. Aims: To examine the interplay between natural lithium in drinking water, prescribed lithium-based pharmaceuticals and suicide in Austria. Method: Spatial Bayesian regressions for males, females and pooled suicide mortality rates were estimated. Results: Although the expected inverse association between lithium levels in drinking water and suicide mortality was confirmed for males and for total suicide rates, the relationship for females was not significant. The models do not …

Gender Wage Gap Matters To Women In Low-Wage Occupations: Hispanic Women Face Largest Pay Inequities, Center For Women In Politics And Public Policy, University Of Massachusetts Boston
Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy
Much of the existing research on the gender gap in pay focuses on its impact on women who are middle- and upper-income earners in highly skilled occupations, such as medicine, law, and business. There has been less emphasis on the impact of pay inequity on low-income women working in low-wage occupations.

We tested a model that children’s tendency to attribute hostile intent to others in response to provocation is a key psychological process that statistically accounts for individual differences in reactive aggressive behavior and that this mechanism contributes to global group differences in children’s chronic aggressive behavior problems. Participants were 1,299 children (mean age at year 1 = 8.3 y; 51% girls) from 12 diverse ecological-context groups in nine countries worldwide, followed across 4 y. In year 3, each child was presented with each of 10 hypothetical vignettes depicting an ambiguous provocation toward the child and was asked to attribute the …
Enhancing Competitiveness And Connectivity: The New Us-Mexico Air Services Agreement, Drew M. Stapleton, Vivek Pande
Enhancing Competitiveness And Connectivity: The New Us-Mexico Air Services Agreement, Drew M. Stapleton, Vivek Pande
Journal of Transportation Management
Beginning this year, U.S. cargo and passenger airlines will have an opportunity to compete for a bigger share of freight trade and traffic between the U.S. and Mexico. This opportunity will occur as a result of the new Air Services Agreement (ASA) between the U.S. and Mexico that took effect in January, 2016. This ASA further elevates and strengthens the dynamic commercial and economic relationship between the United States and Mexico by facilitating greater trade and tourism. It is a key element of the U.S.-Mexico High Level Economic Dialogue (HLED) that aims to promote competitiveness and connectivity, foster economic growth, …
Identifying The Dimensions Of Logistics Service Quality In An Online B2c Context, David M. Gligor
Identifying The Dimensions Of Logistics Service Quality In An Online B2c Context, David M. Gligor
Journal of Transportation Management
There is theoretical and practical evidence indicating the existence of significant differences between the needs and wants of firms and end consumers, as well as the existence of significantly different needs between offline and online environments. Therefore, it is not clear how effectively measures of logistics service quality developed in an offline, B2B context can be applied to an online, B2C environment. This manuscript explores the elements of logistics service quality that end consumers value in an online context. The literature on logistics service quality in B2B and the literature on online consumer satisfaction are integrated. This results in the …

Logistics Concepts In Freight Transportation Modeling, Subhro Mitra, Elvis Ndembe, Poyraz Kayabas
Journal of Transportation Management
The purpose of this paper is to review logistics concepts used in macro freight transportation modeling by various planning agencies at the national, state and city level. The chronological development of freight modeling endeavors are studied here and the logistics component incorporated in the modeling is identified. The key modeling tools are identified and analyzed to identify the efficacy of the model, ease of use, and data required to implement the model. The conclusion was that European freight models were more developed than North American freight models. The tools most widely used are the aggregate-disaggregate-aggregate model, input-output model, artificial neural …
The Dominican Grassroots Movement And The Organized Left, 1978–1986, Emelio Betances
The Dominican Grassroots Movement And The Organized Left, 1978–1986, Emelio Betances
Sociology Faculty Publications
Through their struggles for better services, grassroots movements played a large role in the process of democratization and construction of social citizenship in the Dominican Republic. The modern grassroots movement, especially in relation to the uprising of April 1984, challenged the government's neoliberal policies and opened the way for the emergence of an independent movement that confronted both left-wing parties and organized labor. However, because the gains from expanding social citizenship remained limited in the face of the Dominican state's inability to formulate socio-economic policies, the movements at best posed a worthwhile goal that Dominican society may revisit in the …
