Why Don’T Library Science Students Want To Become Managers?, Robert P. Holley
Why Don’T Library Science Students Want To Become Managers?, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
Very few students who have taken Wayne State University's required management course from me have any interest in library careers in management. Some are even more firm in their decision after taking the course though most graduates will have management responsibilities in their first library position and some will manage a small library. I polled current students and recent graduates about this reluctance. The sixteen responses considered the following possible causes: personality traits, a preference for traditional library activities, a dislike of managerial responsibilities, prior management experience, and salary. Additional, more systematic research is needed to test this hypothesis.
Bright Or Dark, Or Virtues And Vices? A Reexamination Of The Big Five And Job Performance, Christopher M. Castille
Bright Or Dark, Or Virtues And Vices? A Reexamination Of The Big Five And Job Performance, Christopher M. Castille
Doctoral Dissertations
Personality research in industrial/organizational psychology has been dominated by the description of personality traits and outcomes as either bright or dark. Unfortunately, research has shown that bright traits have dark outcomes and vice versa, suggesting that a paradox is plaguing the literature. To resolve this paradox, I propose that a different heuristic stemming from positive psychology be utilized: virtues and vices. Virtues refer to exercises of human excellence while vices refer to actions of human failure. Drawing on the virtue ethics concept of the Aristotelian mean, dark traits are viewed as extreme or elevated levels of bright personality traits, allowing …

Thousands of public hydrogen fueling stations are needed to support the early Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) market in the U.S.; there are currently 12. The California state government has been the largest investor of the hydrogen fueling infrastructure funding 9 permanent stations currently open to the public with 48 more in development costing anywhere from $1.8M-$5.5M each. To attract private investors and decrease dependence on government funding, a low-cost, mobile hydrogen dispensing system must be developed. This paper describes a transportable hydrogen fueling station that has been designed for $423,000 using off-the-shelf components, less than 23% of the capital …
Political Inclusion And Educational Investment, Stephen D. O'Connell
Political Inclusion And Educational Investment, Stephen D. O'Connell
Economics Working Papers
Using exogenous geographic variation in exposure to 1993 reforms that introduced seat quotas for women in local government in India, I find a sizable increase in the enrollment rate of male and female school-age children resulting from additional exposure to women leaders. Effects are particularly concentrated among poorer households and those with less- educated proximate role models, and were commensurate with reductions in idle time and household-enterprise employment. There is no evidence for the effects being facilitated by changes in school infrastructure, the labor market, or among broader social factors related to intrahousehold bargaining. Using textual data from the news …

Columbia Corridor Drainage Districts Governance Study, Thomas Potiowsky, Jenny Liu, Mike Paruszkiewicz, Jeff Renfro, Marisol Cáceres, Peter Hulseman
Northwest Economic Research Center Publications and Reports
This study focused on major questions related to drainage district consolidation in the Columbia Corridor, arising from the geographic and economic diversity that characterizes the four entities. The magnitude and type of economic activity within the districts varies considerably, and results in a broad range of operational resources and levee system requirements.

Counting The Uncountable: Measuring The Benefits Of Mre, Robert Keeley
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The aim of this article is to propose concepts that define MRE in terms of its outcomes and beneficiaries and to open a discussion on developing a means that may then be useful in measuring the efficacy of MRE. This article defines efficacy as the ability to produce a desired or intended result.

Post-Clearance Inspection: How Much Is Enough?, Russell Gasser
Post-Clearance Inspection: How Much Is Enough?, Russell Gasser
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Post-clearance inspection serves to check contamination of land on a per square meter basis. Although inspection does little in the way of explaining the quality of the work done in demining operations, it can be important in providing an incentive for deminers to produce higher quality work.
Preparing For Humanitarian Demining In Post-Conflict Colombia, Carl Case
Preparing For Humanitarian Demining In Post-Conflict Colombia, Carl Case
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Nearly a decade after launching an effort to build national capacity to clear landmines from its territory, the Colombian government still faces significant challenges in addressing the country’s mine problem, which has claimed more than 11,000 victims since 1991.1 Although the overall number of new landmine victims significantly decreased over the past eight years, survey and clearance work has been limited to more secure zones of the countryside because of the threat from nonstate armed groups to deminers and people living in conflict areas. Meanwhile, the risk to civilians living in parts of the country where demining activities have …
The Case For A National Assessment On Landmine Contamination Through Nts In Colombia, Pablo Parra, Marc Bonnet
The Case For A National Assessment On Landmine Contamination Through Nts In Colombia, Pablo Parra, Marc Bonnet
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
With a majority of Colombia’s municipalities reporting landmine or ordnance incidents since 1990, there is an urgent need to perform non-technical survey (NTS) in the country to determine the remaining threat. Assuming liability for risk, howevr, slows the process. The authors make a case for proceeding with NTS.

Healing And Reconciliation For Survivors Of War In North Central Colombia, Cameron Macauley
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Between 2009 and 2011, a project was implemented to help survivors of war in a small Colombian community learn how to help each other recover from their trauma. Twenty local residents received extensive training on how to lead peer groups to help survivors come to terms with the past and coexist peacefully with ex-combatants. The project concluded with the construction of a memory wall to honor victims of armed violence.

Child-To-Child Risk Education, Tycie Horsley

Children are especially susceptible to the dangers of landmines. Through its Children Against Mines Program, the Marshall Legacy Institute extends mine risk education through club participation to children, who subsequently spread the valuable information to peers.
Unplanned Explosions Of Munition Stockpiles, Ken Rutherford, Matthew Williams
Unplanned Explosions Of Munition Stockpiles, Ken Rutherford, Matthew Williams
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
Unplanned explosions at munition sites in places such as Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United States result in mass casualties to civilians and government personnel. Although new ammunition-storage practices in the United States expanded to include a military role, not all countries have evolved their practices as quickly, leaving them more susceptible to continued explosions. The increasing role of urbanization will make ammunition site management even more important in the 21st century.

Assessment Of Validity And Response Bias In Neuropsychiatric Evaluations, Dustin Wygant, Robert Phillip Granacher
Assessment Of Validity And Response Bias In Neuropsychiatric Evaluations, Dustin Wygant, Robert Phillip Granacher
Psychology Faculty and Staff Research
BACKGROUND: Forensic neuropsychiatric assessment requires thorough consideration of malingering and response bias. Neuropsychiatric evaluations are complicated due to the multiple domains in which symptoms and impairment present. Moreover, symptom exaggeration in these evaluations can also present along various symptom domains (e.g., psychological, neurocognitive, somatic). Consequently, steps must be taken to ensure adequate coverage of response bias across all three domains of function.
PURPOSE: The following article reviews the conceptualization of malingering in neuropsychiatric settings, as well as various approaches and measures that can be helpful in the assessment of malingering and response bias.
CONCLUSIONS: Forensic neuropsychiatric assessment requires thorough consideration …
