Anne Cai always joked that, “one of these days,” school was going to drive her to insanity. A snapshot of her life begged to differ. As the oldest of three daughters in her traditional Chinese­ American family, Anne, 23, was the image of success and achievement, not only for her parents and their peers, but for her sisters Jenny, 19, and Vicky, 13. She excelled in elementary, middle and at all three of her high schools—the high school moves were decided by her parents and she never questioned them, lest she burden the family with what she considered complaining.

In 2013, Deisy García, a young immigrant from Guatemala filed two domestic violence complaints against her husband. In one of them she said she was scared he would killed her. The New York City Police Department never translated it and eight months later, Garcia's husband ended up killing her, along with their two daughters. Exploring García's case, this story explores how the access to interpretation services can mean a matter of life or death for Spanish-speaking victims of domestic violence.

At the turn of the 20th century, this city was the epicenter of a cultural obsession with bicycles, and is on the verge of a second renaissance with these simple machines. This project highlights different iterations of bicycle culture within modern New York City, and the socioeconomic, interpersonal, and self-expressive stories it produces.

More than two decades have passed since the end of apartheid, yet freedom is elusive for those who battled to bring democracy to South Africa. There are more than 16,000 military veterans living in South Africa, according to the Department of Military Veterans database. The real figure is likely much larger since the database is still under development. Many of these veterans are caged by the psychological, social and financial consequences of their past.

Several months ago there was a minor flap over the fact that the National Football League was given the right to delete parts of the film “Concussion” before its general release to the public. At the time many, including myself, feared that the NFL would defang the bite of the film. It did not. In fact it’s hard to imagine what the NFL censored in “Concussion” given the devastating nature of the final product which is now in release.

This dissertation has analysed the Swedish oil spill preparedness between 2010 and 2015 by examining management, prevention, planning and response, and compared it to international practices. The study is based on analysis of available data, surveys administered to the coastal County Administrative Boards and municipalities, and interviews with the national oil spill experts.

Oil spills can cause significant acute damage to the environment. Sweden has a long coastline with intense shipping traffic. This suggests a high risk of a large oil spill occurring, but no oil spill over 1,200 tonnes has affected the Swedish territorial waters or Exclusive Economic Zone. …

IMO uses three pillar strategy for air emission reduction including, technical, operational and market-based measures (MBM). The dissertation briefly describes the maritime regulatory framework for reduction of emissions. An overview on air emissions caused by the shipping sector is analysed. A brief look is taken on the need and methodology for inventory management of air emissions. A comparison between the market-based measures, operational measures, carbon tax and abatement measures for averting air emissions of carbon equivalent is made. In this dissertation, the author would like to identify the role of logistics in Vietnamese economy and its importance to the overall development strategy of Vietnam. In addition, this dissertation also explores strong and weak points of logistics systems and suggests measurements to mitigate harmful impacts. The goal is to attract more investment and improve the competitiveness comparing with neighboring South East Asia countries. The cost-benefit of highway investment will also be analyzed to assess the effectiveness of the project. Two additional case studies are provided in the last chapter as examples of port development in other Asia countries.

In the novels, the protagonists make different decisions: in Steer Toward Rock Jack after displacement in China adopts US-American identity and in Mona in the Promised Land Mona, a second generation Chinese American, selects Jewish identity. In his article "Ethical Dilemma and Ethical Epiphany in McEwan's The Children Act" Biwu Shang attempts to explore the ethical nature of the child's welfare in Ian McEwan's novel. Shang examines the various legal cases processed by the British High Court judge Fiona Maye and the blood transfusion case of Adam Henry in particular. Shang argues that Maye adopts ethical criteria throughout the cases she deals with. Oil Exploration Economics: Empirical Evidence From Indonesian Geological Basins, Hari Patria, Vid Adrison

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

Oil exploration has been subject to economic research for decades. Earlier studies of exploration models are mostly discussed the behavior of exploration at the macro-level analysis such as field, firm, region, and continental. This paper then focuses on the geological and economic factors that determine the well-drilling decision at the micro-level using disaggregated panel data of 32 geological basins in Indonesia over the period of 2004-2013. This study shows that the number of drilled wells is determined significantly by the lag of success rate, lag of discovery size, lag of global oil price, and regional location of geological basin.
