Message retransmission is a central aspect of information diffusion. In a disaster context, the passing on of official warning messages by members of the public also serves as a behavioral indicator of message salience, suggesting that particular messages are (or are not) perceived by the public to be both noteworthy and valuable enough to share with others. This study provides the first examination of terse message retransmission of official warning messages in response to a domestic terrorist attack, the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013. Using messages posted from public officials' Twitter accounts that were active during the period of the …

Examining The Relationship Between Bicultural Stress, Mental Well-Being, Perceived Social Support, And Education Among People Of African Descent, Zemed Beraki Berhe
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Studies investigating the bicultural experiences of people of African descent are significantly underrepresented in the literature. The primary purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the relationship between experiences of bicultural stress and mental well-being. In investigating this relationship, perceived social support and education were examined as protective factors, and its relationship to bicultural stress for this population. With the ultimate goal of this information contributing to the understanding of bicultural processes within this population and the relationship to mental health outcomes. A non-experimental (non-randomized) research design was utilized to examine the study research questions and hypotheses. The participants …
Forging Connections And Building Collections: The Mass. Memories Road Show At Umass Boston, Jessica R. Holden
Forging Connections And Building Collections: The Mass. Memories Road Show At Umass Boston, Jessica R. Holden
Joseph P. Healey Library Publications
In this presentation, I explored three aspects of the Mass. Memories Road Show: the public event, the digital collection, and the archival record of Massachusetts communities. I discussed bringing archival resources out into communities (rather than vice versa), and thus reaching new audiences, as well as building new partnerships within those communities.
The Mass. Memories Road Show is a state-wide digital history project that documents people, places, and events in Massachusetts history through family photographs and stories. In partnership with teams of local volunteers, we organize public events to scan family and community photographs and record “the stories behind the …
Decreasing Disparities In Physical Activity: An Intervention Based On Self-Determination Theory And Motivational Interviewing, Lauren S. Miller
Decreasing Disparities In Physical Activity: An Intervention Based On Self-Determination Theory And Motivational Interviewing, Lauren S. Miller
Dissertations - ALL
Objective. The mental and physical benefits of physical activity are well-established. However, there is a racial disparity in exercise, such that minorities are less likely to engage in physical activity than are white individuals. Research suggests that a lack of motivation is an important barrier to physical activity for racial minorities. Therefore, motivational interventions may be especially useful in promoting physical activity within minority populations. A previous meta-analysis has found that physical activity interventions based on self-determination theory (SDT) and motivational interviewing (MI) are especially effective in increasing white individuals' physical activity (Miller & Gramzow, 2015). The objective of this …
Working With Embroideries And Counter-Maps: Engaging Memory And Imagination Within Decolonizing Frameworks, Puleng Segalo, Einat Manoff, Michelle Fine
Working With Embroideries And Counter-Maps: Engaging Memory And Imagination Within Decolonizing Frameworks, Puleng Segalo, Einat Manoff, Michelle Fine
Publications and Research
As people around the world continue to have their voices, desires, and movements restricted, and their pasts and futures told on their behalf, we are interested in the critical project of decolonizing, which involves contesting dominant narratives and hegemonic representations. Ignacio Martín - Baró called these the “collective lies” told about people and politics. This essay reflects within and across two sites of injustice, located in Israel/Palestine and in South Africa, to excavate the circuits of structural violence, internalized colonization and possible reworking of those toward resistance that can be revealed within the stubborn particulars of place, history, and culture. …

Research Brief: "Bringing The State Back In To Civic Engagement: Policy Feedback Effects Of The G.I. Bill For World War Ii Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This study examines World War II veterans, as the implications for civic engagement and the theoretical framework are still applicable to post 9/11 veterans, and found that fifty-one percent of all World War II returning veterans took advantage of the G.I. Bill of 1944. In practice, public service programs for veterans should continue encouraging their veterans to be civically engaged, and student veterans should continue frequenting campus veteran’s centers and services. In policy, the VA and legislatures have made significant improvements to reduce the paperwork involved with accessing one’s G.I. Bill benefits. Suggestions for future study include continuing to study …
Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration Among Sri Lankan Men, Ruvani W. Fonseka, Alexandra M. Minnis, Anu Manchikanti Gomez
Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration Among Sri Lankan Men, Ruvani W. Fonseka, Alexandra M. Minnis, Anu Manchikanti Gomez
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
In Sri Lanka, over one in three women experience intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization in their lifetime, making it a serious public health concern. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as child abuse and neglect, witnessing domestic violence, parental separation, and bullying are also widespread. Studies in Western settings have shown positive associations between ACEs and IPV perpetration in adulthood, but few have examined this relationship in a non-Western context. In the present study, we examined the association of ACEs with IPV perpetration among Sri Lankan men surveyed for the UN Multi-Country Study on Men and Violence in Asia and the …

Possible Futures For The Legal Treatise In An Environment Of Wikis, Blogs, And Myriad Online Primary Law Sources, Peter W. Martin
Possible Futures For The Legal Treatise In An Environment Of Wikis, Blogs, And Myriad Online Primary Law Sources, Peter W. Martin
Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers
Major law publishers have begun producing ebook versions of some of the legal treatises they own. Despite asserted advantages over both print and online versions of the same content, these represent a step back from what treatises have become within the major online services and even further from what they might become now that numerous sources of primary law are directly accessible via the Internet.
The article traces the corporate and technological developments that have placed existing treatises in their present posture. Drawing upon the author’s own work preparing a legal treatise designed for digital rather print delivery, it reviews …

The Alternate Assessment Based On Alternate Achievement Standards Eligibility Decision-Making Process, Karren Streagle, Karen Wilson Scott
The Qualitative Report
Under No Child Left Behind (NCLB), students with significant intellectual disabilities (ID) are allowed to take alternate assessments based on alternate achievement standards (AA-AAS) in lieu of the standardized assessments taken by their peers, however evidence suggests that IEP teams inconsistently and sometimes inaccurately apply established participation criteria in finding students eligible to participate in AA-AAS. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to describe the decision-making process used by Individual Education Program (IEP) teams to identify students eligible to participate in AA-AAS. Thirteen case managers of students taking the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) from central Virginia participated …

Teachers’ Perceptions And Conceptualizations Of Low Educational Achievers: A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Of Disengagement For Future Neets, Gabriella Agrusti, Francesca Corradi
The Qualitative Report
The NEETs phenomenon in Italy is not a recent one, but it increased dramatically after the Global Financial Crisis. As in France many different factors influence it, but the prevailing two are the skills mismatch and the youth generations’ discouragement. Whereas in France the role of the school is crucial into tackling NEETs, in Italy the initiatives are mainly carried out by local authorities and small and medium enterprises. Therefore, more research is needed that sheds lights on teachers’ role in dealing with low educational achievers. This exploratory study investigates teachers’ perceptions and conceptualizations of low educational achievers in upper …

This paper looks at the management of theses and projects in selected university libraries in Ogun State of Nigeria. The paper discovered that the methods of processing these materials include indexing and classification among various other methods. The major facilities for shelving and storing theses and projects as evident in the research are wooden shelves …
