Neighborhood Diversity And The Creative Class In Chicago, Bradley Bereitschaft, Rex G. Cammack Sep 2015

Neighborhood Diversity And The Creative Class In Chicago, Bradley Bereitschaft, Rex G. Cammack

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

Richard Florida's creative class theory posits that highly skilled workers with creative- or knowledge-intensive occupations are particularly sensitive to ‘quality of place’, a key component of which is an open and tolerant attitude toward different peoples, cultures, and lifestyles. While diversity, as a proxy for tolerance, has proven to be a relatively weak pull-factor at the inter-metropolitan level, the potential role of neighborhood-level diversity in the residential location of creative class workers has yet to be explored empirically. In this study we use ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and geographically weighted regression (GWR) to test the hypothesis that there exists …

Revealing The Political Decision Toward Chinese Carbon Abatement: Based On Equity And Efficiency Criteria, Jinlan Ni, Chu Wei, Limin Du Sep 2015

Revealing The Political Decision Toward Chinese Carbon Abatement: Based On Equity And Efficiency Criteria, Jinlan Ni, Chu Wei, Limin Du

Economics Faculty Publications

China's economic reform over the past 30 years has allowed the free market to drive economic development. However, government still plays a key role in the energy sector by allocating energy conservation and emissions abatement. How does the government make an equity decision as a tradeoff to market efficiency? This is an unanswered question. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the government's preference toward equity and efficiency. Using the provincial level CO2 intensity allocation data, we investigate the political decision that the government made based on the equity and efficiency criteria. We find that the equity index plays …

Social Network, Intra-Network Education Spillover Effect And Rural–Urban Migrants' Wages: Evidence From China, Chunchao Wang, Chenglei Zhang, Jinlan Ni Sep 2015

Social Network, Intra-Network Education Spillover Effect And Rural–Urban Migrants' Wages: Evidence From China, Chunchao Wang, Chenglei Zhang, Jinlan Ni

Economics Faculty Publications

This study examines the determinants of rural–urban migrant wages, paying special attention to the intra-network education spillover effect of the migrants' social network in China. Using the new migrant sample of Rural Urban Migration in China (RUMiC) 2009 survey data, we find that the migrants' social network does have a significant impact on their own earnings. In particular, we find evidence that there exists an education spillover effect of the migrants' social network, which indicates that the education level of the migrants' social network has a significant positive effect on their earnings. We also find that the education spillover effects …

Building A Better Model: Variable Selection To Predict Poverty In Pakistan And Sri Lanka, Marium Afzal, Jonathan Hersh, David Newhouse Sep 2015

Building A Better Model: Variable Selection To Predict Poverty In Pakistan And Sri Lanka, Marium Afzal, Jonathan Hersh, David Newhouse

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Numerous studies have developed models to predict poverty, but surprisingly few have rigorously examined different approaches to developing prediction models. This paper applies out of sample validation techniques to household data from Pakistan and Sri Lanka, to compare the accuracy of regional poverty predictions from models derived using manual selection, stepwise regression, and Lasso-based procedures. It also examines how much incorporating publically available satellite data into the model improves its accuracy. The five main findings are that: 1) Lasso tends to outperform both discretionary and stepwise models in Pakistan, where the set of potential predictors is large. 2) Lasso and …

Digital Relics Of The Saints Of Affliction: Hiv/Aids, Digital Images And The Neoliberalisation Of Health Humanitarianism In Contemporary Vietnam, Alfred Montoya Sep 2015

Digital Relics Of The Saints Of Affliction: Hiv/Aids, Digital Images And The Neoliberalisation Of Health Humanitarianism In Contemporary Vietnam, Alfred Montoya

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

Neoliberal logics and calculations have been incorporated into strategies for global health management as rational, technical, scientific guarantors of the integrity and dignity of The Human. NGOs demonstrate, accrue and trade in virtue to gain support, funding and prestige. They field site-visit teams which conduct audits of local partners, review programme data and collect images and narratives of and from the recipients of aid. These images and narratives are used to assess the performance of their local partners and win new donations and volunteers in their home countries. These powerful images and harrowing stories appear in NGO media, establishing the …

Ideological Social Identity: Psychological Attachment To Ideological In-Groups As A Political Phenomenon And A Behavioral Influence, Christopher J. Devine Sep 2015

Ideological Social Identity: Psychological Attachment To Ideological In-Groups As A Political Phenomenon And A Behavioral Influence, Christopher J. Devine

Political Science Faculty Publications

Motivated by symbolic ideology research and Social Identity Theory (SIT), this article introduces an original measure of ideological social identity (ISI) designed to capture feelings of psychological attachment to an ideological in-group and facilitate analysis of their attitudinal and behavioral effects. Data from a nationally representative sample of survey experimental participants indicates that the ISI scale is empirically distinct from ideological self-placement, the standard measure of symbolic ideology, and it conditions the effects of self-placement on vote choice in actual and hypothetical election scenarios. ISI is also common within the American public, particularly among conservatives, and responsive to environmental stimuli …

Evolving Homeland And Civil Security Mission Space And Research A Cross-Disciplinary And Global Challenge, Alexander Siedschlag Sep 2015

Evolving Homeland And Civil Security Mission Space And Research A Cross-Disciplinary And Global Challenge, Alexander Siedschlag

Publications

Homeland security has evolved from a governmental function to a networked community with shared responsibility for addressing all-hazards challenges to globalized societies, moving from an ‘Americanized’ term to a generic concept. It aims at ensuring civil security – a broader effort not geographically, culturally, or functionally bound. The paradigm of civil security research provides an insightful framework for research and teaching in homeland security as part of a global and holistic effort, calling for a cross-disciplinary perspective.

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

This article focuses on the development of a document delivery service. We talk about the implementation of the service: from choosing software platforms and scanning hardware to deciding on document delivery policies and marketing strategies. We then will share some usage statistics and provide insights into who the users of this service are and how they are using it. We will also provide some testimonials from faculty who are using the service. With our conclusion we will share how we have benefited from this service and and include our suggestions for other libraries who are considering implementing a similar service.

The Social Costs Of Gender Nonconformity For Transgender Adults: Implications For Discrimination And Health, Lisa R. Miller, Eric Anthony Grollman Sep 2015

The Social Costs Of Gender Nonconformity For Transgender Adults: Implications For Discrimination And Health, Lisa R. Miller, Eric Anthony Grollman

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Research suggests that transgender people face high levels of discrimination in society, which may contribute to their disproportionate risk for poor health. However, little is known about whether gender nonconformity, as a visible marker of one’s stigmatized status as a transgender individual, heightens trans people’s experiences with discrimination and, in turn, their health. Using data from the largest survey of transgender adults in the United States, the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (N = 4,115), we examine the associations among gender nonconformity, transphobic discrimination, and health-harming behaviors (i.e., attempted suicide, drug/alcohol abuse, and smoking). The results suggest that gender nonconforming trans …

Deal With Iran's Nuclear Issue, Khadijeh Salimi, Regina Karp Sep 2015

Deal With Iran's Nuclear Issue, Khadijeh Salimi, Regina Karp

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

In December 2006, the UN announced the first resolution against Iran's nuclear activities. After many sanctions and negotiations, there still exists no definite agreement between parties over Iran's nuclear program. The objective of this study is to determine whether Iran's nuclear program has become Iran's identity. It is assumed that if the nuclear issue has not become Iran's identity, negotiation would be a useful threat. The Constructivists' approach for shaping states' identities was used in this study to analyze Iran's behavior toward the nuclear issue. Iran has a long history of civilization. Iranians can trace heritage back to The Persian …

The World And Bollywood: An Examination Of The Globalization Paradigm, Jonathan R. Miller Sep 2015

The World And Bollywood: An Examination Of The Globalization Paradigm, Jonathan R. Miller

Anthós

This research examines the applicability of the globalization paradigm in the analysis of Bollywood film, and to what extent that paradigm has been insufficient in describing the Indian film industry’s evolution and structure. Through the examination of Bollywood: Sociology Goes to the Movies by Rainder Kumar Dudrah, the author seeks to illustrate how the ease with which the term 'globalization' is used carries the risk of misrepresenting the nature of the interconnectedness that the term infers. Bollywood in particular is susceptible to such a misrepresentation, as its rapidly increasing global presence does require a degree of interconnectivity. However, the causes …

Health, Medical Innovation And Disability Insurance: A Case Study Of Hiv Antiretroviral Therapy, Perry Singleton Sep 2015

Health, Medical Innovation And Disability Insurance: A Case Study Of Hiv Antiretroviral Therapy, Perry Singleton

Center for Policy Research

This study examines the effect of health on SSDI outcomes. The effect is identified by a new antiretroviral therapy to treat the human immunodeficiency virus. Administrative data on SSDI applications come from the Disability Research File. According to the analysis, the new therapy had an immediate and persistent effect on program entry. By 1997, the therapy decreased applications by 35.2 percent and new awards by 36.7 percent. Among existing beneficiaries, the therapy decreased program exits through death, but did not substantially increase program exits for work. By 1999, the therapy increased HIV-related expenditures by $43.6 million.

Analysing The Performance Of Economic Discourses, Joseph K. Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke Sep 2015

Analysing The Performance Of Economic Discourses, Joseph K. Fitzgerald, Brendan O'Rourke

Conference papers

We focus on the methods used in analyzing broadcast interviews with economists on Morning Ireland, a prominent Irish radio news programme. Few would doubt that economists have taken a prominent role as experts on policy issues (Carrick-Hagenbarth and Epstein 2012, p.45) and some contend that no other social science discipline has gained such prominence (Schneider and Kirchgassner 2009, p.324). This paper comes from a larger research project, which uses a tailored methodological approach, incorporating a number of analytical methods. Keller (2011, p.63) has argued that a tailored methodological approach is often required to give special consideration to the ‘knowledge side’ …

From Mirroring To World-Making: Research As Future Forming, Kenneth J. Gergen Sep 2015

From Mirroring To World-Making: Research As Future Forming, Kenneth J. Gergen

Psychology Faculty Works

After decades of acrimonious debate on the nature of scientific knowledge, researchers in the human or social sciences are reaching a state of relative equanimity, a condition that may be characterized as a reflective pragmatism. Yet, even while the context has favored the development of new forms of research, the longstanding ocular metaphor of inquiry remains pervasive. That is, researchers continue the practice of observing what is the case, with the intent to illuminate, understand, report on, or furnish insight into given states of affairs. And, while selectively useful, such an orientation is not only limited in potential but subject …

New State Laws Reflect The Rethinking Of Excessive Mandated Standardized Testing In America's Public Schools, Renalia Smith Dubose Sep 2015

New State Laws Reflect The Rethinking Of Excessive Mandated Standardized Testing In America's Public Schools, Renalia Smith Dubose

Florida A & M University Law Review

The largest standardized testing cheating scandal in American history has caused many to question the practice of excessive standardized testing in America’s public education system. In the spring of 2013, thirty-five educators in Atlanta, Georgia, including the former superintendent, principals, teachers, and testing coordinators were indicted for cheating on statewide-standardized tests. The situation in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia, triggered a conversation about excessive mandated standardized testing in America’s public schools and caused public outcry against the negative impact of standardized testing. As a result, new state laws are being passed throughout the United States to not only end the rapid …

Testing For Spatial Lag And Spatial Error Dependence In A Fixed Effects Panel Data Model Using Double Length Artificial Regressions, Badi H. Baltagi, Long Liu

Center for Policy Research

This paper revisits the joint and conditional Lagrange Multiplier tests derived by Debarsy and Ertur (2010) for a fixed effects spatial lag regression model with spatial auto-regressive error, and derives these tests using artificial Double Length Regressions (DLR). These DLR tests and their corresponding LM tests are compared using an empirical example and a Monte Carlo simulation.

This project reports the results of two studies that investigated the impact on course evaluations of using partial credit iterative responding (PCIR) with the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IF-AT) forms on summative course assessments. This project also quantifies grade inflation from utilizing different PCIR schemes and documents the percentage of possible partial credit students learned. Study 1 compared evaluations in courses where exams were manipulated. Study 2 compared evaluations in courses where daily reading quizzes were manipulated. Results from Study 1 revealed that multiple course evaluation scores increased 10% in the PCIR condition. Students earned 75% of the partial credit …

Just Jocking? An Exploration Of How 10-12 Year Old Children Experience An Equine Assisted Learning Programme, In A Deis School, In Limerick City., Kate Bronwyn Jones

Dissertations

Throughout Irish history, the horse has had many uses. In modern Ireland, some communities have harnessed the power of the horse to deliver a range of social interventions. However, at present, there is little published research about equine assisted programmes in Ireland. The main intention of this research project is to explore how 10-12 year old children, from a DEIS primary school in Limerick city, experience an Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) programme facilitated by the local Garda Youth Diversion Project (GYDP). The project aims to be child centred, emergent and participatory, in keeping with the United Nations Convention on the …

Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today, Heidi Blackburn Sep 2015

Gender Stereotypes Male Librarians Face Today, Heidi Blackburn

Criss Library Faculty Publications

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (USBLS) (2012), the library profession has seen a 48% (19,458) increase in males working in libraries since 1980 and the male influx is expected to increase (Minnesota, 2011) despite lingering professional stereotypes. Movies, books, and other popular media focus on the overall image of the librarian, as if only one type exists for both sexes (Duke, 1999; Garcia, 2011). These stereotypes may be misinterpreted on the faulty premise that men confront the same stereotypes in the library workplace as women. Social roles and norms are different for men and women and …
