Family Policy In Post-Communist Europe And The Former Soviet Union: Assessing The Impact Of Xenophobia, Marina A. Kingsbury Sep 2015

Family Policy In Post-Communist Europe And The Former Soviet Union: Assessing The Impact Of Xenophobia, Marina A. Kingsbury

Political Science ETDs

This dissertation emphasizes the comparative aspect of family policy, with a regional focus on post-communist Europe. Following the turmoil of transition, many social welfare programs were transformed and often scaled back. Family policies, however, were largely carried through the initial period of transformation, despite the economic difficulties and the dramatic decline in birth rates in a course of several years. This study was inspired by the seeming contradiction between falling birth rates and increasing generosity of family policy provisions across the former communist European countries. This dissertation uses original data, which includes levels of benefit provision as well as national …

Whole-Of-Government Approaches To Ncds: The Case Of The Philippines Interagency Committee—Tobacco, Raphael Lencucha, Jeffrey Drope, Jenina Joy Chavez

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

To address the rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), governments are now being urged to ‘put forward a multisectoral approach for health at all government levels, to address NCD risk factors and underlying determinants of health comprehensively and decisively’ [UN, 2011. Political Declaration of the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (No. A/66/L.1). New York, NY: United Nations]. There is a global consensus that whole-of-government approaches (WG) can be particularly effective in regulating products such as tobacco, pre-packaged foods and alcohol, which are or can be major risk factors for NCDs. Despite the …

Ebony And Ivory? Interracial Dating Intentions And Behaviors Of Disadvantaged African American Women In Kentucky, David J. Luke, Carrie B. Oser Sep 2015

Ebony And Ivory? Interracial Dating Intentions And Behaviors Of Disadvantaged African American Women In Kentucky, David J. Luke, Carrie B. Oser

Sociology Faculty Publications

Using data from 595 predominantly disadvantaged African American women in Kentucky, this study examines perceptions about racial/ethnic partner availability, cultural mistrust, and racism as correlates of interracial dating intentions and behaviors with both white and Hispanic men. Participants reported levels of dating intentions and behaviors were significantly higher with whites than Hispanics. The multivariate models indicate less cultural mistrust and believing it is easier to find a man of that racial/ethnic category were associated with higher interracial dating intentions. Women were more likely to have dated a white man if they believed it was easier to find a white man …

Implication Of Closure Of Rdas And Wdas Segment Of The Foreign Exchange Market In Nigeria, Akin Dawodu

The Nigeria foreign exchange market has transitioned a great deal since the country gain independence. Nigeria had a pegged exchange control until the introduction of the structural adjustment program (SAP) in 1986. which brought about dual exchange rate system, the first and second tier foreign exchange market that later metamorphosed into the Foreign Exchange Market (FEM). Hence there continue to be policy reversals as a result of the volatility in the exchange rate.

Are We Approaching An Economic Singularity? Information Technology And The Future Of Economic Growth, William D. Nordhaus Sep 2015

Are We Approaching An Economic Singularity? Information Technology And The Future Of Economic Growth, William D. Nordhaus

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

What are the prospects for long-run economic growth?, the present study looks at a more recently launched hypothesis, which I label Singularity . The idea here is that rapid growth in computation and artificial intelligence will cross some boundary or Singularity after which economic growth will accelerate sharply as an ever-accelerating pace of improvements cascade through the economy. The paper develops a growth model that features Singularity and presents several tests of whether we are rapidly approaching Singularity. The key question for Singularity is the substitutability between information and conventional inputs. The tests suggest that the Singularity is not near.

Modeling Uncertainty In Climate Change: A Multi‐Model Comparison, Kenneth Gillingham, William D. Nordhaus, David Anthoff, Geoffrey Blanford, Valentina Bosetti, Peter Christensen, Haewon Mcjeon

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The economics of climate change involves a vast array of uncertainties, complicating both the analysis and development of climate policy. This study presents the results of the first comprehensive study of uncertainty in climate change using multiple integrated assessment models. The study looks at model and parametric uncertainties for population, total factor productivity, and climate sensitivity. It estimates the pdfs of key output variables, including CO 2 concentrations, temperature, damages, and the social cost of carbon (SCC). One key finding is that parametric uncertainty is more important than uncertainty in model structure. Our resulting pdfs also provide insights on tail …

Neighborhood Change And The Role Of Environmental Stewardship: A Case Study Of Green Infrastructure For Stormwater In The City Of Portland, Oregon, Usa, Vivek Shandas

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Throughout the history of cities, the ecological landscape has often been buried, removed, or taken for granted. A recent recognition that humans are part of the global ecosystem, and that human actions both cause and are affected by ecological change, brings with it an awareness of the value of nature in cities and of natural systems on which cities depend. The feedbacks between humans and their environment within an urban context can have profound implications for the growth of and change in cities, yet there is a limited understanding of the interactions between biophysical changes in cities and the implications …

The Challenges Of Teaching The Introductory Lis Management Course, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

Teaching the introductory LIS management course may be the most challenging assignment for LIS professors because of the breadth of the subject, the probabilistic nature of management principles, and the differing management environments of LIS organizations. The best teaching strategy is to describe honestly to students the benefits and limitations of the course and to focus on the achievable objectives of introducing students to core management concepts, providing skill enhancement, and encouraging them to evaluate their management potential. The article discusses the difficulties of teaching leadership skills, the limits imposed by student competencies, and the impact of the professor's background …

An Interpretivist Study Of Customer Self-Service Technology Usage And Experiences In The Tourism Sector., Petranka Kelly

Doctoral

This study provides an interpretivist exploration of customer usage and experiences of self-service technologies (SSTs) in the tourism sector. Tourism customers are increasingly using a wide range of SSTs, for example, to make reservations online and use self-check-in and „bag and tag‟ facilities at airports. While SST research to date has provided insights into the factors affecting customer SST adoption decisions, the aim of this study is to explore customers‟ perspectives on their usage and experiences of SSTs in the tourism sector. This interpretivist study employs a two-stage qualitative methodology of short qualitative interviews with 133 participants at an international …

Big Things Have Small Beginnings: Curating A Large Natural History Collection - Processes And Lessons Learned, Stacey Knight-Davis, Todd Bruns, Gordon Tucker

Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity

In the fall of 2013, the chair of Biological Sciences asked the IR librarian about digitizing the herbarium collection and including it in The Keep. A meeting between the IR librarian and Herbarium Curator Dr. Tucker thus began a project that would represent the maturing of The Keep into a substantial repository, involve both the IR librarian and the Head of Library Technology Services, and require steep learning curves in a number of areas including equipment procurement, metadata schema, data manipulation, and cross-platform communication. By opening up the collection for discovery, scholars around the world would see what is available …
