Why Do Women Prefer Part-Time Employment In Turkey?, Burcu Duzgun Oncel, Bilge Eris Dereli Sep 2015

Why Do Women Prefer Part-Time Employment In Turkey?, Burcu Duzgun Oncel, Bilge Eris Dereli

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

Female part-time employment among female total employment has increased substantially in Turkey between 2005 and 2011. Part-time employment accounted for 13%, 22% and 27% of female employment in 2005, 2008 and 2011, respectively. The main objective of this paper is to outline some stylized facts concerning the key characteristics of female part time employment and to assess the reasons behind the increase in part-time employment for females in Turkey. We present general profile and labor status profile of part-time female workers via rich descriptive analysis by using Turkstat Household Labor Force Surveys for the period 2005 and 2011. Moreover we …

Measuring Trade Advantages Of The Qualifying Industrial Zones Program Of Jordan And Egypt Offered By The United States For Having Signed Peace Treaties With Israel, Austin Carter, Yun Gong, Jeffrey B. Nugent Sep 2015

Measuring Trade Advantages Of The Qualifying Industrial Zones Program Of Jordan And Egypt Offered By The United States For Having Signed Peace Treaties With Israel, Austin Carter, Yun Gong, Jeffrey B. Nugent

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

This paper uses detailed cross country and over time data to show that despite various limitations, the QIZs of Jordan and subsequently Egypt, along with certain US FTAs, have contributed significantly to an increase in participating countries’ shares of exports to the US in the nine most common categories of clothing items for which the effects of tariff and quota exemptions are likely to be strongest. These influences, although perhaps diminishing after a certain period of time, are stronger than those of exchange rate, transport cost and changes in openness over time. What is perhaps most surprising is that these …

Leaving The Gang: A Review And Thoughts On Future Research, Dena C. Carson, J. Michael Vecchio

Criminal Justice & Criminology: Faculty Publications & Other Works

Researchers have examined aspects of gangs and their members for almost a century. This work, however, focuses primarily on youth prior to joining as well as during gang involvement. While comparatively less is known about the leaving processes, work in this area has been increasing in recent years. This chapter will discuss the growing body of research on the processes associated with leaving the gang. Specifically, it will review difficulties associated with defining gang desistance, theoretical perspectives on desistance, variations in motives, methods, and consequences of leaving, barriers to desistance, as well as make recommendations for policy and future research.

Proposing A Pedigree Risk Measurement Strategy: Capturing The Intergenerational Transmission Of Antisocial Behavior In A Nationally Representative Sample Of Adults, Joesph A. Schwartz, Eric J. Connelly, Kevin M. Beaver, Joseph L. Nedelec, Michael G. Vaughn Sep 2015

Proposing A Pedigree Risk Measurement Strategy: Capturing The Intergenerational Transmission Of Antisocial Behavior In A Nationally Representative Sample Of Adults, Joesph A. Schwartz, Eric J. Connelly, Kevin M. Beaver, Joseph L. Nedelec, Michael G. Vaughn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

An impressive literature has revealed that variation in virtually every measurable phenotype is the result of a combination of genetic and environmental influences. Based on these findings, studies that fail to use genetically informed modeling strategies risk model misspecification and biased parameter estimates. Twin- and adoption-based research designs have frequently been used to overcome this limitation. Despite the many advantages of such approaches, many available datasets do not contain samples of twins, siblings or adoptees, making it impossible to utilize these modeling strategies. The current study proposes a measurement strategy for estimating the intergenerational transmission of antisocial behavior (ASB) within …

Inflation And The Exchange Rate: The Role Of Aggregate Demand Elasticity, Ben L. Kyer, Gary E. Maggs Sep 2015

Inflation And The Exchange Rate: The Role Of Aggregate Demand Elasticity, Ben L. Kyer, Gary E. Maggs

Economics Faculty/Staff Publications

This paper examines the effect of aggregate demand elasticity on the exchange rate when inflation occurs. We discover that both the source of the inflation, whether demand-pull or cost-push, and the elasticity of aggregate demand with respect to the price level, are of consequence for the exchange rate. We obtain two primary conclusions. First, the effect on the exchange rate of cost push inflation is ambiguous and is partially determined by the price level elasticity of aggregate demand. In particular, and assuming that the two examined countries have equivalent aggregate supply elasticities, we conclude that the nation with the less …

Good Governance In Basic Education In Egypt: Paradoxical Or Self Explanatory?, Yasmin Khodary Sep 2015

Good Governance In Basic Education In Egypt: Paradoxical Or Self Explanatory?, Yasmin Khodary

Political Science

Despite the numerous initiatives suggested and implemented to reform education in Egypt, very little was achieved in terms of improving education quality and, consequently, boosting development and democratic transition processes in Egypt. This paper argued that basic education in Egypt suffered variant degrees of weaknesses in applying good governance dimensions, including participation, accountability, responsiveness, fighting corruption, effectiveness and transparency, which ultimately affected negatively the overall performance of the basic education sector in Egypt. Building on the results of an assessment to governance in basic education in Egypt, the paper evaluated the degree to which basic education service providers in Egypt …

Re-Engaging With Education As An Older Mature Student: Their Challenges, Their Achievements, Their Stories., Helen Graham

Dissertations

The decision to re-engage with education at any age can be a significant step for anyone to take. The number of mature learners engaging in further education in Ireland is increasing yearly and public policy continues to encourage lifelong learning. There is a responsibility on institutions providing further education to engage with their students in a meaningful and constructive way. This study addressed an important but neglected area in Irish education research. The study is intended to improve understanding of the mature students’ experience and therefore gives a voice to their stories, their achievements and their struggles. It highlights the …

Community Involvement To Address A Long-Standing Invasive Species Problem: Aspects Of Civic Ecology In Practice, Rebecca W. Dolan, Kelly Harris, Mark Adler

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Invasive non-native species (INS) are found in every city around the globe, but their impacts in urban settings as biological agents of visual pollution that block views of natural landscapes and disconnect citizens from nature are not as often addressed as comprehensively as their impacts in natural areas or agricultural settings. The multiple impacts of INS in cities make them ideal candidates for aspects of Civic Ecology Practice, where local environmental stewardship action is taken to enhance green infrastructure and community well-being in urban and other human-dominated systems. We present details of a community driven program focused on removal of …

Institutional Convergence: Exit Or Voice?, Joshua C. Hall Sep 2015

Institutional Convergence: Exit Or Voice?, Joshua C. Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

There is a small but growing literature on the determinants of economic freedom. In this paper I contribute to this literature in two ways. First, I empirically show that beta-convergence in economic freedom occurred from 1980 to 2010. Countries with low levels of economic freedom in 1980 "catch up" at a rate of 0.7 percent a year on average, ceteris paribus. Second, I document the structural characteristics that contribute to this institutional convergence. My conditional convergence estimates suggest democratic institutions do not contribute to conditional convergence. Exitability, a variable that captures how easy it is for citizens to \vote …

Van Voorhees, Tracy Gladstone, Stephanie Cordel, Monika Marko-Holguin, William Beardslee, Sachiko Kuwabara, Mark Allan Kaplan, Joshua Fogel, Anne Diehl, Chris Hansen, Carl Bell

Publications and Research

Efforts to prevent depression have become a key health system priority. Currently, there is a high prevalence of depression among adolescents, and treatment has become costly due to the recurrence patterns of the illness, impairment among patients, and the complex factors needed for a treatment to be effective. Primary care may be the optimal location to identify those at risk by offering an Internet-based preventive intervention to reduce costs and improve outcomes. Few practical interventions have been developed. The models for Internet intervention development that have been put forward focus primarily on the Internet component rather than how the program …

Trailblazers And Those That Followed : Personal Experiences, Gender, And Judicial Empathy., Laura P. Moyer, Susan B. Haire

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper investigates one causal mechanism that may explain why female judges on the federal appellate courts are more likely than men to side with plaintiffs in sex discrimination cases. To test whether personal experiences with inequality are related to empathetic responses to the claims of female plaintiffs, we focus on the first wave of female judges, who attended law school during a time of severe gender inequality. We find that female judges are more likely than their male colleagues to support plaintiffs in sex discrimination cases, but that this difference is seen only in judges who graduated law school …

Ritual Economy And Craft Production In Small-Scale Societies: Evidence From Microwear Analysis Of Hopewell Bladelets, Logan Miller Sep 2015

Ritual Economy And Craft Production In Small-Scale Societies: Evidence From Microwear Analysis Of Hopewell Bladelets, Logan Miller

Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology

Ritual economy provides a powerful framework for examining aspects of the organization of craft production, especially in the absence of a strong, centralized political economy. This paper outlines the basic tenants of ritual economy and describes how this framework can expand the understanding of the organization of production in small scale societies. I apply these concepts in a case study based largely on microwear analysis of Hopewell bladelets from the Fort Ancient earthworks in southwest Ohio. Microwear analysis from many different localities excavated within and near the earthworks demonstrates that craft production was an important activity conducted using bladelets. Each …

Landscape Values And Wind Generation In West Mayo, Ireland, Ken Boyle Sep 2015

Landscape Values And Wind Generation In West Mayo, Ireland, Ken Boyle

Conference Papers

The landscape of west Mayo, in North West Ireland, is dominated and shrouded by an extensive area, 3,539Km2, of blanket peat soils. The landscape and its habitats have multiple values associated with them including a source of peat for fuel, agriculture, forestry, conservation, tourism, biomass production, tourism, cultural and archaeological. Historically communities have relied on peat as a source of energy and in the 20th century the state harvested peat on an industrial scale to generate electricity. Biomass production using willow (Salix spp) on cutover blanket peat and extensive planting, on deep peat, of Picea sitchensis and Pinus contorta was …
