Pakistan's Partition: Search For National Identity, Akmal Abdulmuminov
Pakistan's Partition: Search For National Identity, Akmal Abdulmuminov
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Since the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Islam has played a major role in defining identity of people of Pakistan. General Zia-ul-Haq has played a major role in defining Pakistan’s national and political identity. His famous process of ruling is known as Islamization. He took several steps in doing so: first in July 1977 when he took control of the states, he established a close alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. This put Pakistan’s national identity heavily along Islamic lines. Also under Zia-ul-Haq, all textbooks were rewritten with an Islamic ideological agenda. He increased the role of religious leaders and Islamic clerics in …

The purpose of this study was to investigate how types of bullying engaged in by high school students (relational, physical, or verbal aggression) vary with gender and how they may be related to a student’s social status. Children in the ninth grade, from four different Kentucky high schools, were administered various measures as part of a larger study on social development in their own classroom. Measures used in our analysis included a bully and victim self-reported narrative, Bullying Questions and Belonging Questionnaire, and a Peer Nomination Scale. Results indicated that females used more relational aggression than males, and males used …

The Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions, has radically changed the global market for green technology. The demand for clean energy has increased, causing an influx of new companies producing renewable energy products and creating cleaner processes for fossil fuel consumption. The question is: how can we, as investors, take advantage of this growing market? Through research into the different sectors of the green energy market, this paper breaks down each type of renewable energy, providing an evaluation of the various investment options. Comparing these investments with the different betting options in roulette, the paper …

Over the past decade, reality shows have ascended to the top of the Nielsen rating charts and have assumed a dominance that is difficult to cast aside. One such reality show, American Idol has grown in popularity over its last six seasons. This chapter discusses one of the main arguments of a larger honors thesis that examines the underlying motives that keep American viewers watching. As a cultural commodity, American Idol can be viewed as a product of American values and holds a societal purpose for its viewers. Therefore, the arguments within this chapter propose that the great popularity enjoyed …

Specifically, 500 students were randomly selected together with 10 information and communication technology (ICT) instructors in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Both questionnaire and in-depth interviews were used for gathering data. The data collected were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). Findings of the study showed that stringent criteria are used to assess the needs of students and in the distribution of the laptops. The use of user-friendly laptops and qualified instructors has significantly improved the students’ knowledge …
The Role Of National Archives In The Creation Of National Master Narratives In Southeast Asia, Michael Karabinos
The Role Of National Archives In The Creation Of National Master Narratives In Southeast Asia, Michael Karabinos
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This paper is a working paper for a research project in its initial stage. Using an article by German historian Stefan Berger on the role of national archives in the creation of master historical narratives in Europe as its inspiration, I look at the same concept for postcolonial Southeast Asia. Particular attention is paid to Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Due to the colonial past of these countries, what is held in their national archives includes many records created by the former colonial administrations. How this affects the creation of master historical narratives will be addressed in this research project. I …
Ex-Prisoners’ Perspectives On Prison Drug Treatment In Ireland, John M. Duggan
Ex-Prisoners’ Perspectives On Prison Drug Treatment In Ireland, John M. Duggan
Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore ex-prisoners’ perspectives on prison drug treatment in Ireland. Prison drug treatment has increased across Europe over the last 20 years both in availability and modality. However, the delivery of drug treatment services in a prison setting is not without its challenges. The prison population is a multiply disadvantaged group, which experiences a disproportionate level of health inequality and social exclusion. Substance misuse is prevalent for a high proportion of prisoners. This research is based on seven semi-structured qualitative interviews with ex-prisoners who have had experience of prison drug treatment. The perspectives of …

Education And Marriage Decisions Of Japanese Women And The Role Of The Equal Employment Opportunity Act, Linda N. Edwards, Takuya Hasebe, Tadashi Sakai
Education And Marriage Decisions Of Japanese Women And The Role Of The Equal Employment Opportunity Act, Linda N. Edwards, Takuya Hasebe, Tadashi Sakai
Economics Working Papers
Prompted by concordant upward trends in both the university advancement rate and the unmarried rate for Japanese women, this paper investigates whether the Equal Employment Opportunity Act (EEOA), which was passed in 1985, affected women's marriage decisions either directly or via their decisions to pursue university education. To this end, we estimate a model that treats education and marriage decisions as jointly determined using longitudinal data for Japanese women. We find little evidence that the passage of EEOA increased the proportion of women who advance to university, but strong support for the proposition that it increased the deterrent effect of …

Economics
Calibrating a stylized version of the Dornbusch-Fischer-Samuelson model, this paper finds that relative to a cohort of 97 trading partners, the US capital stock, labor force, and nominal GDP per capita decreased, while the level of technology embodied in its output increased. These observed dynamics suggest a shift in comparative advantage that, coupled with increased production at the extensive and intensive margins, yields an expectation of labor market churning. Grouping trading partners by World Bank income classifications reveals that observed changes for low and lower middle income cohorts resulted in more pronounced shifts in comparative advantage. Examining employment and earnings …

Data Management Services
To ensure compliance and to achieve greater value for the research sponsored by the University and outside funders, researchers need to take an active part in the management of the data they produce. Albertsons Library, in coordination with University units such as the Office of Sponsored Programs and the Office of Information Technology, is well-positioned to play an integral role in educating researchers and providing support on issues related to data management.
Albertsons Library established a working group in early 2014 dedicated to learning about data management issues and becoming involved in the University’s research data management activities. In order …

Health-Y Sharing Of Human Data, Sarah Olesen
Health-Y Sharing Of Human Data, Sarah Olesen
Library Events
Data from research with humans is not published or shared at the same rate as other disciplines. But as more funding agencies and journal publishers, including those responsible for human studies, encourage and incentivise researchers to publish these data, more are seeking to do so. Human data often include personal and sensitive information that makes them subject to privacy laws and the human research ethics standards that govern research institutions. In many cases, human data can be published and shared safely and ethically with great success when it is planned for, participants are informed, and privacy is maintained by confidentialising …

An Exploration Of The Perspectives Of Young Males With Regard To Their Experience Of Non-Heterosexual Sexuality Transitions And The Potential Influences On This Transition Within An Irish Context, Caroline Kelly
Dissertations
This research aimed to explore the perspectives of young males with regard to their experience of non-heterosexual sexuality transitions and the potential influences on this transition within an Irish context. A qualitative research approach was adopted, using semi-structured interviews with young males between the ages of twenty-five and thirty-two. This method allowed for the details of participants‟ lived experience and their individual perceptions to be captured. Key findings suggest that experiences of non-heterosexual sexuality transitions in both family and friendship contexts shaped how the transition was negotiated. Disclosure of sexual minority status to family members is still a significant issue …
Republicanism At Work: Strategies For Supporting Resistance To Domination In The Workplace, David Watkins
Republicanism At Work: Strategies For Supporting Resistance To Domination In The Workplace, David Watkins
Political Science Faculty Publications
Work, as organized in contemporary workplaces and situated in social and political structures, poses a threat to freedom that has been underappreciated in political theory, especially liberal political theory. The recent revival of republicanism offers an intriguing alternative: Can republicanism do any better, with respect to work and freedom?
An examination of the workplace through a republican lens does a better job of helping us make sense of the way work threatens freedom — by exposing us to the threat of domination — and it can generate at least three plausible proposals that might render resistance to domination in the …
