The Impact Of Social Influence, Gender, And Non-Parental Guardianship On Adolescents In Substance Use Recovery, Anne Thompson Heller, Beth S. Russell

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

This study explored potential barriers to sustaining recovery from substance use disorders (SUD) in adolescence, particularly for youth enrolled in school-based recovery programs, or recovery schools. Participants (N = 28) enrolled full-time in a Massachusetts recovery high school completed a survey of demographic information and scales assessing social desirability, parent and peer influence, and stigma. Results indicated that peers have slightly higher influence than parents, particularly among girls and adolescents with non-parental guardians. Participants living with parents who use substances reported being sober an average of 28.7 months, versus 40.9 months for those living with nonusing parents. Participants with parental …

This study examined the perspectives of Extension and research faculty regarding integration of Extension and research (E-R) activities. Faculty with 50% or greater appointments in Extension or research at a Land-Grant University in the northeastern United States were identified as subjects for the study (N = 59). Study objectives were to determine the current status of E-R integration efforts, understanding of Extension and research faculty roles, barriers to E-R integration, and strategies for strengthening E-R integration activities. An instrument was developed by the researchers and data were collected using SurveyMonkey. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize data. Findings indicated that …

While many studies about the 4-H camping experience focus on youth who are campers, few studies examine the outcomes of the experience for counselors. This study examines the extent to which 4-H camp results in transformative learning for 4-H members who serve as camp counselors, examines the perceived changes that occur within counselors, and describes the factors and characteristics of camp that result in personal transformation. The population for this study was 2012 Minnesota 4-H camp counselors. Using the Transformative Learning and the Camp Experience Staff Member Survey, the results indicated that camp counselors experienced transformative learning. Major personal changes …

As society grows increasingly diverse, it is critical that youth development professionals are equipped with cultural core competencies. This descriptive study gauged the perceived level of cultural competence among 4-H Youth Development professionals from a Southern state in the United States. Based on the 4-H Professional Research, Knowledge, and Competency (PRKC) Model (Stone & Rennekamp, 2004), youth development professionals rated their cultural competence (equity, access, and opportunity) in eight core competency areas. Based on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 0 = No knowledge to 4 = Expert, youth development professionals evaluated their cultural competence ranging from 0.66 to 4.00. …

This thesis attempts to ask how the United States should conduct foreign policy towards Iran given the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), agreed to on 14 June 2015. The 2015 JCPOA initiated a drastic shift in US foreign policy toward Iran. It is now up to US policy makers to craft a coherent Iran foreign policy moving forward from the agreement. In order to accomplish this, the vitriolic relationship between Iran and the United States, which contains two concurrent narratives, must be examined. Teaching is considered to be one of the most highly demanding professions, and one that is associated with high levels of stress and sometimes deleterious outcomes. Although research demonstrates that burnout and attrition are often associated with specific characteristics of the occupation (e.g., challenging workload, standardized testing, merit-based salary) minimal research focuses on how to better support teachers’ well-being. The field of positive psychology affords a new perspective in how to obtain quality mental health without solely focusing on psychopathology within a deficits-based approach. This paper explores the impact of nationally held public debt and foreign debt on the US economy. It has tried to define the nationally held public debt as an additional asset for the private sector by insuring a source of future saving, an increase in investment capacity and a source of increase in demand. A linear regression analysis of 39 observations from 1970 to 2014, using different lengths of lag, from one to five years have shown that for the first year, nationally held public debt has a positive and statistically significant impact on economic growth. The most recent iteration of the ACRL Standards for Information Literacy has added “dispositions” to the repertoire of information literacy practice. This poster will explore how these “dispositions” might be understood in Adventist Theological Education. The first iteration of ACRL Standards for Information Literacy was largely instrumental and most instruction was focused on using technology. This development shifts the focus from learning an ICT skill to transformative learning. Information seeking has been transformed from a scarcity model to an abundance model. Research has shown that compassion fatigue is associated with burnout and compassion satisfaction. Practically no studies have examined how resilience may impact these variables. This study examined how resilience is related to compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction among a convenience sample of disaster behavioral health and emergency preparedness responders (N = 139) attending a training conference in Michigan. Measures included the 30-item Professional Quality of Life Scale, the 14-item Resilience Scale, and a demographic questionnaire. Seventy-two percent of the participants were at risk for compassion fatigue, while 19% were at risk for burnout. Only 22% of participants had …

Of the 1.2 million individuals living with HIV, African Americans continue to be the most adversely impacted population in the U.S. (CDC, 2015). While there has been a decrease over time in new HIV infections among this population, statistics indicate that in 2012, African Americans accounted for almost half of those living with HIV (47%) in the U.S. (CDC, 2015). Among those infected men who have sex with men (MSMs), heterosexual males, and heterosexual females account for highest rates of infection among this group in 2010 (CDC, 2015). Academic libraries in New York State have benefited from Coordinated Collection Development Aid, meant to support resource sharing, since 1981. In recent years, dwindling academic library budgets have increased the need to utilize funds effectively. Patrons already benefit from the connection between resource sharing and collection development, where ILL is important and shared collections are valued. A need existed to connect the dots between library collection development and resource sharing cooperatives, where the strength of resource sharing groups is the strength of the combined, diversified collections of its members.

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the impact of veteran and disability statuses on poverty and material hardship among elderly veterans. In policy and practice, veterans should use support services, such as the VA and local veterans groups, and social workers should take into account veteran and disability statuses when determining needs; the VA could change their income support programs to help disabled veterans. Suggestions for future research include accounting for individual differences among households and looking at how elderly veteran poverty affects family members.
