Teacher Retention And Student Achievement: Environmental Factors, Social Capital And Interventions In Urban, Pre-Dominantly Latino Schools, Luis Xavier Benavides Jan 2015

Teacher Retention And Student Achievement: Environmental Factors, Social Capital And Interventions In Urban, Pre-Dominantly Latino Schools, Luis Xavier Benavides

Master's Theses

The quality of education in high poverty areas is often blamed on a number of factors - poor teaching, inadequate resources, an environment of hopelessness and mediocrity, lack of perseverance in the learner, lack of social programs and social capital. These factors are often compounded by effects of systemic racism in the student’s surrounding environment and in education system. This study focuses on one aspect of investigation: the impact of increased social capital for teachers on students’ school performance and interventions focused on building social capital between students, parents and teachers in urban, pre-dominantly Latino schools. Improving links between students, …

Squealer Dealers: The Market For Information In Federal Drug Trafficking Prosecutions, Andrew Nutting Jan 2015

Squealer Dealers: The Market For Information In Federal Drug Trafficking Prosecutions, Andrew Nutting

Economics Faculty Research and Scholarship

Federal data on drug trafficking sentences are used to determine factors that affect market quantities of providing information against other defendants (i.e., defendant probabilities of receiving testimony-related sentence reductions) and market prices of information (i.e., the sizes of such sentence reductions). Women and better-educated defendants experience high demand (higher quantities and prices) for information. Blacks, Hispanics, and non-U.S. citizens experience low demand. Defendants expecting longer sentences have higher supply of information. Conditional on expected sentence, crack dealers, high-level dealers, and dealers with long criminal histories experience low demand, while low-level dealers experience high demand. Women of all races experience high …

Southeast Asia’S Democratic Developmental States And Economic Growth, Michael T. Rock Jan 2015

Southeast Asia’S Democratic Developmental States And Economic Growth, Michael T. Rock

Economics Faculty Research and Scholarship

How has democracy impacted growth in Southeast Asia? This question can be answered by demonstrating how political elites in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand crafted quite unique democratic developmental states that enabled them to provide the public goods and public policies to maintain high growth. Because of this, growth under democracy has been as high as it was during the heyday of these polities’ developmental autocracies. Moreover, as there was no single dominant pathway to the construction of democratic development in these polities, it looks like political elites were able to take local conditions and history into account suggesting that political …

Gay And Greek: The Deployment Of Gender By Gay Men In Fraternity And Sorority Life, Anthony Clemons Jan 2015

Gay And Greek: The Deployment Of Gender By Gay Men In Fraternity And Sorority Life, Anthony Clemons

Honors Projects

This paper explores the deployment of gender by gay males in fraternities. Using data from 17 qualitative interviews, it is suggested that there are strict rules of hegemonic masculinity embedded in fraternity life where members value heterosexuality. This leads gay men in fraternities to conceal behavior socially labeled as “gay” and therefore nonmasculine. Gay members create special intragroup networks within their organizations where they aim to find validation and support that they may not receive from the rest of their brothers. The author argues that gay men’s experiences in fraternities influence how these men choose to strategically deploy their gender.

Social Support Networks Among Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Laura Hapke Jan 2015

Social Support Networks Among Children With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Laura Hapke

Honors Theses and Capstones

Previous research using predominantly adult populations has found that social support is positively correlated with an individual’s quality of overall health and wellbeing. Given the limited research investigating social support among children, especially children with special needs, the present study explored the social support networks of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Nine children enrolled in an after-school program were observed interacting with others and were interviewed in group discussions about the sources of support they tend to rely on in their daily activities. Preliminary findings suggest that children relied on each other’s for help during the regular after-school …

Germany's Green Energy Revolution: Challenging The Theory And Practice Of Institutional Change, Carol Hager Jan 2015

Germany's Green Energy Revolution: Challenging The Theory And Practice Of Institutional Change, Carol Hager

Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

The energy revolution poses a fundamental challenge to the German corporatist institutional model. The push for renewables in Germany arose almost entirely outside the prevailing channels of institutional power. Eventually, federal legislation helped support the boom in local energy production that was already underway, and it encouraged the further development of new forms of community investment and citizen participation in energy supply. Recently, the federal government has tried to put the genie back in the bottle by shifting support to large energy producers. But, as this article shows, the energy transition has provided a base for local power that cannot …

Measuring Emotion Regulation And Emotional Expression In Breast Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review, Tânia Brandão, Rita Tavares, Marc S. Schulz, Paula Mena Matos

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

The important role of emotion regulation and expression in adaptation to breast cancer is now widely recognized. Studies have shown that optimal emotion regulation strategies, including less constrained emotional expression, are associated with better adaptation. Our objective was to systematically review measures used to assess the way women with breast cancer regulate their emotions. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Nine different databases were searched. Data were independently extracted and assessed by two researchers. English-language articles that used at least one instrument to measure strategies to regulate emotions in women with breast cancer were included. Of …

Clinical Encounters With Immigrants: What Matters For U.S. Psychiatrists., Carolina Hausmann-Stabile, Peter J. Guarnaccia Jan 2015

Clinical Encounters With Immigrants: What Matters For U.S. Psychiatrists., Carolina Hausmann-Stabile, Peter J. Guarnaccia

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

About 3.2 percent of the population across the globe are migrants. Today, unprecedented numbers of people are relocating in the U.S. and more than ever, psychiatrists find themselves caring for immigrant patients. International migration is a multilayered issue that often has implications for the mental health of migrants. Thus, there is an increasing interest in understanding how the different factors associated with migration processes affect the mental health outcomes of immigrants. We group these factors into three categories: immigrant process, clinical encounter, and mental health services. When possible, we incorporate a gendered and life span perspective and suggest avenues for …

An Exploratory Study Of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury And Suicidal Behaviors In Adolescent Latinas, Lauren E. Gulbas, Carolina Hausmann-Stabile, Susan M. De Luca, Tee R. Tyler, Luis H. Zayas Jan 2015

An Exploratory Study Of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury And Suicidal Behaviors In Adolescent Latinas, Lauren E. Gulbas, Carolina Hausmann-Stabile, Susan M. De Luca, Tee R. Tyler, Luis H. Zayas

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

To date, there is little research to validate empirically differences between nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI) and attempted suicide among Latina adolescents. Understanding the characteristics and contextual features of self-harmful behaviors among Latina teens is a critical public health and social justice matter given the disproportionate rates of attempted suicide and anticipated population growth of this vulnerable group. In this article, we draw on an ecodevelopmental model to focus attention on factors in the sociocultural environment that shape suicidal behaviors and NSSIs. Through analysis of qualitative interviews conducted with girls who used NSSI (n ! 18), attempted suicide (n ! 29), …

Information Technology Project Management, Witold Chmielarz Jan 2015

Information Technology Project Management, Witold Chmielarz

Monografie/Monographs

The structure of the book consists of the three main parts:

-the first part concerns the directions for the development of IT systems, management under dynamically changing theoretical and practical conditions, which break some of the patterns of thought that function almost as axioms in the field,

-the second part presents the concept of combining the development of methodologies applied in the analysis and design of the IT systems with the development of, on the one hand, technological aspects of the systems development, on the other hand, computer-aided management systems in commercial methodologies of process and project management,

-the third …

The Sweet Taste Of Health: A Positive Deviance Inquiry Into Communicative Acts That Lead To Effective Management Of Diabetes Among Hispanics, Claudia Martinez Boyd Jan 2015

The Sweet Taste Of Health: A Positive Deviance Inquiry Into Communicative Acts That Lead To Effective Management Of Diabetes Among Hispanics, Claudia Martinez Boyd

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Diabetes is among the fastest growing diseases in the world. In the U.S., Hispanics are the third most affected population. Nonetheless, there are Hispanics diagnosed with diabetes who have, against all odds, found solutions to manage their disease. This study focused on the intrapersonal and interpersonal acts and behaviors of "positive deviant" Hispanics living on the U.S. - Mexico border that effectively managed their diabetes. They are referred to as "positive deviants" because they accrue "positive" outcomes and "deviants" because they are not the norm.

A PD inquiry was conducted and twelve PD respondents between the ages of 20 …

Immigration And Family Violence At The Household Level Of Analysis: Examining The Effects Of Immigrant Culture And Neighborhood Structure, Jorge Luis Hernandez Jan 2015

Immigration And Family Violence At The Household Level Of Analysis: Examining The Effects Of Immigrant Culture And Neighborhood Structure, Jorge Luis Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study concerns the relationship between immigration and family violence at the household level of analysis. Previous studies have suggested that immigrant status - particularly first generation immigrant status - is not associated with crime. However, the same cannot be said about their descendants the second and third generations; as they are not as insulated from crime as their forefathers. This study measures the following variables which are relevant to the immigration and family violence relationship; immigrant generational status, acculturation levels, patriarchy, family oriented values, collective efficacy, surveillance, and measures of informal social control. This study finds that there is …

Ecological Perspectives And Children’S Use Of The Internet: Exploring Micro To Macro Level Analysis, Brian O'Neill Jan 2015

Ecological Perspectives And Children’S Use Of The Internet: Exploring Micro To Macro Level Analysis, Brian O'Neill

Articles

Age-old debates on children’s encounters with media technologies reveal a long, fractured and contentious tradition within communication and media studies. Despite the fact there have been studies of e ects of media use by children since the earliest days of broadcasting, the subject remains under-theorised, poorly represented in the literature and not widely understood in media policy debates. Old debates have intensi ed in relation to the study of children and the internet. Pitted between alarmist accounts of risks, excessive use and harmful e ects on the one hand and the many accounts about „digital natives” and the transformational power …

Institutional Mergers In Ireland, Siobhan Harkin, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 2015

Institutional Mergers In Ireland, Siobhan Harkin, Ellen Hazelkorn

Books/Book chapters

The importance of knowledge as a driver of social and economic growth and prosperity, and the increasingly competitive “global race for knowledge and talent” (Hazelkorn, Higher Educ Manage Policy 21(1):55–76, 2009) have combined to transform the higher education landscape, forcing national governments and higher education institutions (HEIs) to pursue new ways of addressing the challenges of a multi-polar world order. Rising demand for higher education (HE), as part of the broader shift from elite to mass to universal participation, has led to the emergence of new models of provision. At the same time, many governments face restrictions on public resources …

Who's On Top? The Mental Health Of Men Who Have Sex With Men, Eric R.A. Carter Jan 2015

Who's On Top? The Mental Health Of Men Who Have Sex With Men, Eric R.A. Carter

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Despite most men who have sex with men (MSM) expressing intercourse position preference (e.g., “top”, “versatile”, or “bottom”), there is little information regarding sexual behavior and mental health sequelae. From the perspective of gender schema theory, the current study examined how position preference related to gender roles, internalized homophobia, and mental health. A total of 70 MSM (U.S. residents, M age = 28.89 years, 68.6% White) were recruited for an online study and grouped according to position preference. Groups were mostly similar across demographic variables, although bottoms had fewer sexual partners and lower condom use than tops and versatiles. In …

Knowledge Sharing In Organisations: A Bayesian Analysis Of The Role Of Reciprocity And Formal Structure, Alberto Caimo, Alessandro Lomi Jan 2015

Knowledge Sharing In Organisations: A Bayesian Analysis Of The Role Of Reciprocity And Formal Structure, Alberto Caimo, Alessandro Lomi

Articles

We examine the conditions under which knowledge embedded in advice relations is likely to reach across intraorganizational boundaries and be shared between distant organizational members. We emphasize boundary-crossing relations because activities of knowledge transfer and sharing across subunit boundaries are systematically related to desirable organizational outcomes. Our main objective is to understand how organizational and social processes interact to sustain the transfer of knowledge carried by advice relations. Using original fieldwork and data that we have collected on members of the top management team in a multiunit industrial group, we show that knowledge embedded in task advice relations is unlikely …

Thinking Outside The Box: Promoting Learning Through Emotional And Social Skills Development, Aiden Carthy, Sinead Mcgilloway

Articles

The European Qualifications Framework provides a useful insight into the kinds of outcomes and abiliti es that are promotedacross the EU. However, beyond arguably vague references to concepts such as ‘integrity’ and ‘autonomy’, this frameworkmakes no reference to the development of students’social and emotional competencies. Based on initial research findings inan Irish context, and when considered against the backdrop of a convincing literature on the importance of emotionalintelligence in academic attainment, there would appear to be considerable scope to modify this framework in order to accommodate more specific reference to the development of emotional and social skills. This paper addresses …

Tiger Shell, Christopher Sinnett Jan 2015

Tiger Shell, Christopher Sinnett

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Poetry is everything. A poem is a shell filled with a sliver of poetry. Life goes in, life comes out. These shells are filled with what we know, and deep inside, what we do not know. The ocean goes in and out. Art is in the shell. The poet enters, does not perform, does not act, does not do. The poet is.

The Scholar lays out an ethical argument against administrative justifications of rape and explains the vital role of narrative.

A Journey To America: An Exploration Of Manga And Anime, Anne Goodman Jan 2015

A Journey To America: An Exploration Of Manga And Anime, Anne Goodman

Whittier Scholars Program

While comics and cart and designoons are stigmatized in the United States as forms of childish media, manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation) are treated differently in Japan. The value of manga and manga as an art and design form, medium for the societal critique, political mouthpiece, and mode of escapism is made evident through the examination of Japanese history and culture. Beginning in the 1960s and peaking in popularity during the 1980s and 90s, manga and anime have journeyed to the United States and have subsequently been appropriated in American culture. Fandom has emerged as a manifestation of …
