Predictors Of Recidivism For Offenders With Mental Illness And Substance Use Disorders, Linda Buckmon Jan 2015

Predictors Of Recidivism For Offenders With Mental Illness And Substance Use Disorders, Linda Buckmon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Mental illness and substance use disorders have been determined to be leading predictors for recidivism among criminal offenders in the United States who are released to community supervision. Women make up an increasing in percentage of this criminal justice population; however, few studies have explored the role that gender plays in determining men and women's recidivism. Offender's education, employment, and peer association have also been reported to be predictors increasing the likelihood of recidivism among criminal offenders. This study was designed to determine if gender, mental illness, substance use disorder, employment, education, and peer association predicted recidivism. Differential association theory …

Police Perceptions And Decision Making Related To Domestic Minors Trafficked Through Prostitution, Donna Sue Belin Jan 2015

Police Perceptions And Decision Making Related To Domestic Minors Trafficked Through Prostitution, Donna Sue Belin

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In spite of a paradigm shift redefining domestic minors trafficked through prostitution as victims instead of criminal offenders, many police officers experience uncertainty in the way they evaluate the nature of domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) and assess the culpability status of prostituted minors. This problem often results in revictimizing children and hindering their ability to access needed services. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore police officers' perceptions of minors engaged in prostitution and derive an understanding of the experiences, beliefs, and values that underlie these perceptions. The study also focused on how these factors influence …

Infidelity, Trust, Commitment, And Marital Satisfaction Among Military Wives During Husbands' Deployment, Myriam Levesque Mccray

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Over 1.5 million U.S. soldiers have deployed oversees since the beginning of the War on Terror in 2001; consequently, spouses are faced with new physical, emotional, and psychological challenges. Many researchers have documented the effects of deployment on marriages and families. However, few researchers have explored the correlates of trust, marital commitment, and marital satisfaction for wives during deployment. This quantitative study, grounded in risk and resilience theory and interdependence theory, used a web-based survey to investigate the relationship between perceived likelihood of spousal infidelity, trust, marital commitment, and marital satisfaction in a sample of 127 military wives whose husbands …

The Relationship Between Social Intelligence And Hearing Loss, Deborah Finken

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study was an exploration of adults with long-term hearing loss (LTHL) and how it may relate to social intelligence (SI) proficiency. The outcome of this study was intended to illuminate a gap in the literature, namely, the manner in which those with long-term LTHL were able to understand social situations and communicate with others when auditory comprehension was limited. A quantitative nonexperimental method was used that provided the Tromso Social Intelligence Scale (TSIS) to a group of 66 adults with LTHL who were diagnosed with hearing loss as children, as well as a group of 70 adults with no …

Evaluating Success Factors In Implementing E-Maintenance In Maintenance, Repair, And Overhaul (Mro) Organizations, Peter Rocky Toves

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Despite more than a decade-long process to transition aircraft maintenance practices from paper-to electronic-based systems, some organizations remain unable to complete this transition. Researchers have indicated that while organizations have invested resources in technology improvements, there remains a limited understanding of the factors that contribute to effectively managing technology-enabled change. The purpose of this case study was to identify and explore socio-technical (ST) factors that inhibit an effective transition from a paper-based system to an electronic-based system for aircraft maintenance. A conceptual model applying theories of change management, technology acceptance, systems thinking, and ST theory informed the research. Thirteen participants …

Predictors Of Community Supervision Failures Among Female Offenders, Fayola Wolfe Jan 2015

Predictors Of Community Supervision Failures Among Female Offenders, Fayola Wolfe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study explored the predictors of community supervision failures amongst female offenders in the United States criminal justice system. Female offenders have, in comparison with male offenders, particular challenges for community reintegration. This study used the relational theory and Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory to investigate the effects of childhood trauma on adult female offenders' behaviors, including substance use disorder and mental health issues. Secondary archival data were obtained from the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency's AUTO Screener and Supervision and Management Automated Record Tracking System; this data pool included information on 1,085 female offenders who had served at …

An Investigation Of Compromise Across Political Parties, Jarryd T. Willis Jan 2015

An Investigation Of Compromise Across Political Parties, Jarryd T. Willis

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The debt ceiling crisis of 2011, the government shutdown of 2013, and the extension of partisanship past the water's edge into Ukrainian-Russian and Israeli-Iranian politics are all recent examples of how polarized American politics has become. Despite the growing desire and necessity for more compromise in American politics, "the systematic study of compromise remains surprisingly under-developed" (Bellamy, Kornprobst, & Reh, 2012). The purpose of this dissertation was to test the premise that citizens create congress, and therefore citizens who value compromise could incentivize more integrative negotiations than citizens who only want their representative to adhere to their values. Using the …

Characterization Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Posttraumatic Growth: Common Determinants And Associations, Daniel Tebbe Jan 2015

Characterization Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Posttraumatic Growth: Common Determinants And Associations, Daniel Tebbe

Psychology Theses - Archive

The current study sought to examine common determinants of posttraumatic stress posttraumatic growth. Specifically, it sought to determine whether common factors may differentially predict PTS and PTG. A longitudinal examination of lung cancer patients was utilized, consisting of three time points. The factors examined included both stable (unmodifiable) and amenable predictors. It was found that while the stable predictors did not significantly predict either PTS or PTG, two of the amenable predictors did differentially predict PTS and PTG. These were the quality of one's primary source of social support and patients' cognitive appraisal of their illness. Specifically, the better the …

Using Isotope Analysis To Understand The Interaction Between Migration And Burial At The Eastern Structure Of Group 1 At Actuncan, A Maya Archaeological Site In Belize, Destiny Micklin

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

Strontium, oxygen, and carbon isotope ratios for seven individuals buried at the eastern shrine of Group 1 at Actuncan were analyzed in an attempt to elucidate the relationship between natal origin, burial location, and mortuary patterns. These data were correlated with archaeological evidence of burial practices to better understand who was interred at this ritually significant space. Results indicate that none of the individuals sampled could be identified as originating outside the Belize River Valley. Burials 7-1 and 9-1 had strontium and oxygen isotope ratios closest to expected values for the area surrounding Actuncan and the Upper Belize River Valley. …

"If The Hells Are Not Empty": A Framework For A Buddhist Critical Social Theory, John M. Yowell

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

Marx's eleventh Thesis on Feuerbach, which stands immortalized as his epitaph, draws a clear line in the sand between the descriptive philosophy of antiquity and the necessarily prescriptive character which he hoped would mark the philosophers and theorists of modernity; a modernity characterized by rampant alienation and exploitation, income inequality, false consciousness, and suffering on a global scale. Modern critical theory, in its attempt to understand these conditions has grown in scope to include innumerable topics from animal rights to pornography. It has also brought into its fold many distinct disciplines from which it may draw insight into the societies …

Predictors Of Timing In Hospice Utilization: The Role Of Family In The Decision For Hospice Care, Cara Lynn Wallace

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Patients and families coping with a terminal illness are faced with a number of decisions over the course of their disease. The decision to continue further treatment versus utilization of a palliative approach, such as hospice, is often one of the most difficult and complex. There are many barriers to hospice care, causing the service to be underutilized. Family is a significant force in patients' choice for palliative care and patients place greater importance on communications related to end-of-life care with their family than with health care professionals. However, dying remains a taboo conversation, a key barrier to end-of-life care. …

The Adoption Of Restorative Justice As A State Policy Response To Criminal Justice Concerns: A Mixed Methods Inquiry, Shannon Marie Sliva

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Over the past two decades, 32 states have enacted legislation supporting the use of restorative justice as crime response. The purpose of this study is to explore the contexts in which restorative justice has been adopted as a policy solution for juveniles and adults by answering the following questions: (1) Are internal characteristics of American states correlated with the adoption of restorative justice legislation between 1988 and 2014? (2) How have social, economic, political, or other factors promoted or impeded the adoption of restorative justice legislation in key states? This study uses a convergent-parallel mixed-methods approach to develop an empirically …

Assessor ratings of Behavioral Feedback Focus were found to be related to 360° outcomes including ratings of …

Representative Bureaucracy And The Indirect Effects Of Substantive Co-Worker Representation, Nita Clark Jan 2015

Representative Bureaucracy And The Indirect Effects Of Substantive Co-Worker Representation, Nita Clark

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

The theory of representative bureaucracy has been suggested as an equity oriented tool that could work to alter the negative aspects of majority rule. Ongoing debates over the best way to ensure and enhance equity for underrepresented groups continue to question the value of representative bureaucracy as it has concentrated on passive (descriptive) and active representation. Such representation where administrators look like the clientele they are serving and subsequently work to generate outcomes for those clients certainly has value. However it is not a certainty that a bureaucrat sharing a similar traits as the group being served (passive representation) will …
