Dictators And Death: Casualty Sensitivity Of Autocracies In Militarized Interstate Disputes, Cigdem Sirin, Michael Koch Jan 2015

Dictators And Death: Casualty Sensitivity Of Autocracies In Militarized Interstate Disputes, Cigdem Sirin, Michael Koch

Selected Works Temporary Series

In this study, we develop a theoretical model based on an inverse divide-the-dollar game (vis-à-vis the distribution of public “bads”) to explore the propensity of different authoritarian regime types to sustain casualties in interstate conflicts. We argue that the smaller the size of an authoritarian leader’s winning coalition, the easier it is for such leader to distribute the costs of militarized conflicts outside of her/his supporters. In line with our theoretical expectations, we find personalist regimes tend to sustain the highest number of casualties in militarized interstate disputes compared to other autocracies. Given that casualties significantly affect the onset, severity, …

Introduction: Controlling The Message In The Social Media Marketplace Of Ideas, Victoria A. Farrar-Myers, Justin S. Vaughn

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The presidential candidate's campaign faced the threat of being derailed following a scathing depiction of him posted by an individual citizen. Regardless of whether the claims made against the candidate were truthful, the message already had gone viral, and the candidate's campaign flailed in its efforts to respond. Finally, one of the candidate's supporters not affiliated with his campaign repackaged the critic's depiction into a new theme, one that resonated positively with voters. The repackaged message itself continued well beyond its original posting as it was replicated in different forums time and time again.

Grassroots Outreach To Foster A Diverse Community, Elizabeth Ann Ramsey Jan 2015

Grassroots Outreach To Foster A Diverse Community, Elizabeth Ann Ramsey

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This exploration of an academic library’s outreach efforts presents a broad overview of a range of initiatives aimed at fostering interaction with library staff and resources. These efforts are put forth by a variety of contributors from throughout the library’s staff without a management mandate or day-to-day control. Although these grassroots outreach efforts cost little to nothing, they still act to effectively inculcate a campus-wide perception of the library as a forward-thinking, inclusive and supportive institution while generating a welcoming atmosphere for diverse users. This atmosphere in turn fosters a learning and research community that sees the library as an …

Implications Of A Changing Agro-Ecosystem On The Nascent Wine Grape Production Industry In Idaho, Eric Lindquist Jan 2015

Implications Of A Changing Agro-Ecosystem On The Nascent Wine Grape Production Industry In Idaho, Eric Lindquist

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wine-grape growing in the state of Idaho is just now coming into its own. Unlike traditional and established row crops, sustainable wine grape production requires the encouragement and development of new agricultural capacity in the state. Concurrently, creating a sustainable wine grape production culture in the state may be constrained and impacted by a changing climate and related stresses on the ecosystem of the semi-arid inland northwest. An understanding of the effect that a changing ecosystem will have on the viability of growing wine grapes, as well as an examination of the challenges that both farmers and policymakers will face …

A Study On Visible Minority Immigrant Women's Experiences With Domestic Violence, Masiya Ahmadzai

Social Justice and Community Engagement

The purpose of this exploratory and qualitative research was to better understand the personal experiences of visible minority immigrant women seeking help with domestic violence in Southern Ontario, Canada. Over the course of two months, I interviewed two survivors of domestic violence and three professionals about their personal and professional experiences on the issue of domestic violence impacting visible minority immigrant women. A gender-based analysis of the participants’ narratives revealed that a number of diversity-related axis such as, gender, visible minority, immigrant status and economic status influenced women’s experiences with abuse. The results exemplify the various barriers they experience and …

L’Argent N’Apporte Pas Le Bonheur Mais Il Achète La Liberté : Carrière Et Refus Du Bonheur Conjugal Chez Les Personnages Femmes De Malika Mokeddem, Simona Pruteanu Jan 2015

L’Argent N’Apporte Pas Le Bonheur Mais Il Achète La Liberté : Carrière Et Refus Du Bonheur Conjugal Chez Les Personnages Femmes De Malika Mokeddem, Simona Pruteanu

Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

Le Mouvement Des Harraga — Un Traumatisme Historique Et Politique Qui Dévoile La Face Cachée De L’Europe, Simona Pruteanu

Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

What’S So Funny About Arguing With God? A Case For Playful Argumentation From Jewish Literature., Don Waisanen, Hershey H. Friedman, Linda Weiser Freidman

Publications and Research

In this paper, we show that God is portrayed in the Hebrew Bible and in the Rabbinic literature—some of the very Hebrew texts that have influenced the three major world religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—as One who can be argued with and even changes his mind. Contrary to fundamentalist positions, in the Hebrew Bible and other Jewish texts God is omniscient but enjoys good, playful argumentation, broadening the possibilities for reasoning and reasonability. Arguing with God has also had a profound influence upon Jewish humor, demonstrating that humans can joke with God. More specifically, we find in Jewish literature …

Is That Feminism I Hear: Recognizing Feminist Language, Lavender Williams Jan 2015

Is That Feminism I Hear: Recognizing Feminist Language, Lavender Williams

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The feminist movement has recently gained much support from celebrities and entertainers. Feminist musical artists have begun to incorporate feminist principles into their music and this added exposure has led to an increase in awareness of feminism. However, no research has been conducted to determine if the current influx of feminist principles into popular culture have been effective at changing the stereotypical beliefs about gender in music listeners. One hundred nineteen college students participated in this study which sought to determine whether listeners were able to identify the feminist message in music and if they were willing to boycott music …

Hungry Cities Partnership

This report on food insecurity in urban Lesotho is the latest in a series on Southern African cities issued by AFSUN. Like the previous reports, it focuses on one city (Maseru) and on poor neighbourhoods and households in that city. More than 60% of poor households surveyed in Maseru were severely food insecure. While food price increases worsen food insecurity for poor households, it is poverty that weakens the resilience of society to absorb these increases. This report argues that Maseru residents face specific and interrelated challenges with respect to food and nutrition insecurity. These are poverty; limited local livelihood …

Tailoring Instruction To The Individual: Investigating The Utility Of Trainee Aptitudes For Use In Adaptive Training, Carla Landsberg Jan 2015

Tailoring Instruction To The Individual: Investigating The Utility Of Trainee Aptitudes For Use In Adaptive Training, Carla Landsberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computer-based training has become more prolific as the military and private business enterprises search for more efficient ways to deliver training. However, some methods of computer-based training are not more effective than traditional classroom methods. One technique that may be able to approximate the most effective form of training, one-on-one tutoring, is Adaptive Training (AT). AT techniques use instruction that is tailored to the learner in some way, and can adjust different training parameters such as difficulty, feedback, pace, and delivery mode. There are many ways to adapt training to the learner, and in this study I explored adapting the …

Gender And Social Capital: Implications For Women's Civic Engagement In Ecuador And Peru, Pamela Medina Jan 2015

Gender And Social Capital: Implications For Women's Civic Engagement In Ecuador And Peru, Pamela Medina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Civic engagement is a fundamental component of a healthy democracy, contributing to higher government accountability and overall improvement in "good governance". Civic engagement is particularly critical to subgroups which are under-represented in formal political structures, such as women, as it affords these groups the opportunity to voice their unique concerns. However, women participate less in many important forms of civic engagement. The United Nations and other international organizations have emphasized the importance of increasing women's voice and empowerment in an attempt to improve women's overall well-being, particularly in the developing world. Individual and contextual factors have demonstrated contributions toward influencing …

The Darkside Of Stereotypes: The Effects Of Crime In The Media On Racial Identity And Emotions, Shantel Campbell Jan 2015

The Darkside Of Stereotypes: The Effects Of Crime In The Media On Racial Identity And Emotions, Shantel Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated how the image of Black criminality in the media affects the racial identity and emotions of Blacks. It also examined how the image of White criminality affects the racial identity and emotions of Whites as a point of comparison. These effects were studied through the lens of self-categorization theory and inter-group emotions theory. SCT posits that a person*s biases are a result of how relevant their social identity is to their self-concept. IET posits that the emotions a person feels are derived from the social group they belong to. This study analyzed 369 responses from participants who …

English Language Learning Kindergartners' Dynamic Responses To Picturebook Reading, Jiyoung Yi Jan 2015

English Language Learning Kindergartners' Dynamic Responses To Picturebook Reading, Jiyoung Yi

Open Access Dissertations

This study explores the nature of English language learning by kindergartners as they engage in multimodal literacy practices in response to picturebook readings in a mainstream classroom. Three focal Spanish-speaking kindergartners and their classroom teacher took part in this study. Data were collected daily for four months in a half-day morning kindergarten program. The participants' verbal and nonverbal classroom interactions during picturebook readings were coded and analyzed to characterize the nature of ELL kindergartners' multimodal responses to picturebook readings. Findings indicate that the classroom instruction did not fully address the differences in the focal children's levels of English language proficiency. …

'In' Or 'As' Space?: A Model Of Complexity, With Philosophical, Simulatory, And Empirical Ramifications, Charles H. Smith

DLPS Faculty Publications

A General Systems model based on ideas originating with the writings of Benedict de Spinoza is described, starting with its philosophical underpinnings, and proceeding on to its relation to modern systems concepts, including attempts to simulate the relationships posed, and measure real world structures. Central to the idea is the notion that spatial extension may not have a prior existence, but emerges only through an entropy maximization process in which information and energy exchange is balanced among some limited number of subsystems that in sum comprise any given functioning complex system. Related published empiricism concerning geographical/geological systems – the hypsometry …

Exploring Ways Social Media Data Inform Public Issues Communication: An Analysis Of Twitter Conversation During The 2012-2013 Drought In Nebraska, Adam Wagler, Karen J. Cannon

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Social networking sites often are used to maintain close social ties, but increasingly they are used for information and news dissemination, specifically about major events and crises. In 2012, a historic drought struck the Midwest, destroying or damaging portions of major field crops in major agricultural production states. By the end of August 2012, 90% of Nebraska was declared in extreme or exceptional drought, leading to bans on irrigation, damaged crops, and record-low yields as well as damaging the state’s leading economic sector. This case study used social media monitoring and analysis to explore online Twitter conversations related to this …

The Relationship Between Emotional Contagion And Mood State, Kayleigh-Farrell Crow Jan 2015

The Relationship Between Emotional Contagion And Mood State, Kayleigh-Farrell Crow

Student Research Posters

Emotions can often be transferred from one person to another. It has been assumed that the strength and impact of contagious emotions can depend largely on the susceptibility of the individual. This concept has led to the idea of emotional contagion, or “the tendency to automatically mimic and synchronize facial expressions, vocalizations, postures and movements with those of another person, and consequently, to converge emotionally”, as defined by Hatfield, Cacioppo & Rapson (1992). The present study will examine the influence of certain emotions and the increased probability for contagion to occur. Specifically, this study will explore the emotional strengths of …
