Cross-Cultural Perspectives After Participation In The Yes Program: A Pilot Study, Vanessa E. Fuentes, Elizabeth A. Goncy, Kevin S. Sutherland

Psychology Faculty Publications

Guided by empowerment and ecological theories, the

Youth Empowerment Solutions (YES) program facilitates character

development through activities based in cultural differences, team

building, and social change. This pilot study consisted of two focus

groups (n = 13) of middle school youth conducted after their

participation in an abbreviated version of the YES program.

Specifically, the present study examined youth’s cross-cultural

perspectives after participation. The focus groups were transcribed

and coded for emergent themes using Heaton’s (2005)

supplementary data analysis framework. Qualitative analysis

Social Services Will Not Touch Us With A Barge Pole’: Social Care Provision For Older Prisoners, Kate O'Hara, Katrina Forsyth, Jane Senior, Caroline Stevenson, Adrian Hayes, David Challis, Jenny Shaw

Articles

Older prisoners are the fastest growing subgroup in the English and Welsh prison estate. Older prisoners have high levels of health and social care needs. This mixed method study involved the distribution of a questionnaire examining the availability of health and social care services for older prisoners to all prisons housing adult males in England and Wales, followed by qualitative telephone interviews with representatives from eight prisons. Over half of establishments had some contact with external social care services but reported significant difficulties in arranging care for individuals. A professional lead for older prisoners had been identified in 81% of …

“I Am Not Free While [Anyone] Is Unfree”: A Proposal And Framework For Enmarginalized Feminist Policy Analysis, Avina Ross

Social Work Student Works

This paper introduces a new feminist approach and framework to policy analysis. As an integration of intersectionality, Black feminist thought and endarkened feminist epistemology, enmarginalized feminist policy analysis (EFPA) offers an intersectional and flexible scope in a framework to assess policy for a diversity of populations, focusing on groups who are forced to live marginal and oppressed lives. Discussion is provided on existing approaches and frameworks in addition to an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of EFPA. A nine-component framework, which includes a section for analyst reflexivity, is provided to guide users in conducting EFPA. The author concludes with implications …

Mobile Technologies And The Incidence Of Cyberbullying In Seven European Countries: Findings From Net Children Go Mobile, Brian O'Neill, Thuy Dinh

Articles

The harmful effects of bullying and harassment on children have long been of concern to parents, educators, and policy makers. The online world presents a new environment in which vulnerable children can be victimized and a space where perpetrators find new ways to perform acts of harassment. While online bullying is often considered to be an extension of persistent offline behavior, according to EU Kids Online (2011), the most common form of bullying is in person, face-to-face. With the rise in use of mobile Internet technologies, this balance is changing. Increased levels of use and more time spent online accessed …

Religious Accommodations And The Common Good, Mark David Hall Jan 2015

Religious Accommodations And The Common Good, Mark David Hall

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

"Citizens, civic leaders, and jurists interested in good public policy should look to history as a guide to the impact of laws and constitutional provisions aimed at protecting religious actors. American civic leaders and jurists, at both the national and state levels, have long created significant protections for religious Americans who object to neutral, generally applicable laws. At their best, Americans have agreed that government should not force individuals to violate their sincerely held religious convictions unless it has compelling reasons for doing so. Moreover, the nation and the states have still been able to achieve important policy objectives in …

Understanding Non-Suicidal Self-Injury On A Child Inpatient Unit: A Mixed-Methods Study, Kristen L. Batejan Jan 2015

Understanding Non-Suicidal Self-Injury On A Child Inpatient Unit: A Mixed-Methods Study, Kristen L. Batejan

Psychology Department Dissertations

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is the direct, deliberate destruction of body tissue without suicidal intent (Nock & Favazza, 2009). Age of onset, based primarily on retrospective reports, commonly occurs between twelve and fourteen years old (e.g., Jacobson & Gould, 2007). Recent efforts have examined NSSI among children directly (Barrocas et al., 2012; Esposito-Smythers et al., 2010). The current study, a mixed-methods approach, examined NSSI among a sample of children treated on a psychiatric inpatient unit. Archival chart reviews assessed current/lifetime NSSI behaviors, demographic data, current/lifetime suicidal ideation and attempts, and self-reported clinical rating scales. Semi-structured interviews with self- injuring children assessed …

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2014 - 2015, Singapore Management University

Report to Stakeholders

This has been a landmark year for both Singapore and Singapore Management University (SMU) with SG50 and SMU15 celebrations marking the nation's 50 years and University's 15 years of progress respectively. The University was honoured to host Singapore’s Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong who delivered the 7th Ho Rih Hwa Leadership in Asia Public Lecture. This was especially poignant as Singapore’s first Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew gave the series’ inaugural lecture in 2002. Mr Lee Hsien Loong discussed the significant challenges facing Singapore over the next 50 years. You can read about his thought-provoking lecture in one …

The Malaysia Report: National Landscape, Current Challenges And Opportunities For Growth, Institute For Societal Leadership, Natalia R. Rodrigues

Institute of Societal Leadership Research Collection

Malaysia’s story is one of pluralism. Like many nations in Southeast Asia, its borders are not drawn along ethnic lines. Immigration and the influence from colonial European powers were particularly prominent in Malaysia because of its many important ports. Thus, many aspects of the country – its economy, its people – are very different on the coasts than they are in the interior of the country, a distinction which generally mirrors the divide between urban and rural areas as well.

Understanding Employment Preparedness Needs For College Students With Asperger's Disorder, Rebecca S. Hansen Jan 2015

Understanding Employment Preparedness Needs For College Students With Asperger's Disorder, Rebecca S. Hansen

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

About 1 in 68 children has been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder and nearly half of those individuals have average to above average intelligence. A significant number of those individuals are currently earning college degrees. Regardless of the escalating prevalence rates of individuals with Asperger’s Disorder who have the intellectual capacity to obtain a college degree, there has been little attention on how to identify and provide the types of specialized supports these college graduates require as they prepare for finding and maintaining meaningful employment. The ways in which colleges are preparing students for employment must be examined to include …

Media Narratives And Drug Prohibition: A Content Analysis Of Themes And Strategies Promoted In Network News Coverage, 2000-2013, Maria M. Orsini

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Illicit drugs and drug users have been criminalized and stigmatized in social life and in mass media for more than a century in the United States. Researchers have reasoned that media accounts have contributed to the social construction of drug use as deviant behavior. Depictions of drugs and drug users which utilize alarmist rhetoric have been prevalent in media discourse and have targeted allegedly disreputable populations. The ideology which underpins drug prohibition, punitive public attitudes, and media sensationalism has contributed to the tendency of American society to disallow alternative approaches. This study examines the contribution of televised news broadcasts in …

Generation Istalk: An Examination Of The Prior Relationship Between Victims Of Stalking And Offenders, Paige Ann Heinrich

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Stalking is a growing issue in the United States faced by many each year. The proliferation of social media sites has made cyberstalking a new form of social harassment and potential victimization. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of traditional and cyberstalking on a medium sized college campus in the Southeastern United States. Included was an examination of the impact of the victim-offender relationship, to whom victimization was reported, and gender patterns of social media use. In total, 1,040 undergraduate/graduate students were surveyed using a multistage cluster sampling method. Results showed that cyberstalking was more prevalent …

A Regional Comparison Of Intellectual Disability Rates In Appalachia, Tiffany D. Yancey Jan 2015

A Regional Comparison Of Intellectual Disability Rates In Appalachia, Tiffany D. Yancey

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study examined administrative prevalence rates of Intellectual Disability for children and adolescents within Southern West Virginia over a three-year-period compared to rates in neighboring Virginia counties with designated Appalachian status to determine if significantly different rates were evident, and if prevalence varied according to poverty, maternal age, and race/ethnicity across all districts. The results revealed that despite Southern West Virginia and Western Virginia being geographically similar, Southern West Virginia LEAs maintain significantly higher ID rates. Findings indicated poverty and teen pregnancy are correlated with higher ID rates but not race/ethnicity. The prevalence study points to the need for additional …

Correlates Of Exhibition-Like Experiences And The Development Of Exhibitionism In Females, Sarah Fouch

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to examine possible events or risk factors that occur during the critical period of learning, before age 18, that influence an individual to engage in exhibitionism or have urges to expose themselves. Anonymous data from 2,201 female participants were obtained using a computer-assisted self-administered questionnaire. Early experiences were examined to determine risk factors for ever having exposed themselves in a public place or ever having had urges to expose themselves in public places using logistic regression analysis. Many of the events that were identified as significant predictors for exhibitionism, such as seeing the mother …

Effects Of Participation In Mihow Program On Maternal Smoking And Birthweight, Leah Elise White

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This is a study of how participation in a community-based home-visitation program called Maternal Infant Health Outreach Worker (MIHOW) can have an effect on maternal smoking behavior and infant birthweight, and how the timing of enrollment can have an impact on those effects. Each participant was randomly assigned to the treatment or control group and answered survey questions during their pregnancies at the time of enrollment and after their babies reached one month of age. Results of this study indicated that the timing of enrollment did not have a significant effect on maternal smoking behavior or infant birthweight; however, the …
