The Amazing Library Race: Tracking Student Engagement And Learning Comprehension In Library Orientations, Eamon Tewell, Katelyn Angell, Katherine Boss

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

Seeking to introduce first-year students to library resources and services in an engaging way, an orientation titled The Amazing Library Race (ALR) was developed and implemented at a university library. Informed by the pedagogy of problem-based learning, the ALR asks students to complete challenges regarding different departments and services. This study assesses this initiative’s success using observational and artifact-based data, addressing the challenging prospect of evaluating the impact of library orientation sessions. Two rubrics were developed to measure student involvement and student learning comprehension. More than 14 hours of in-class observations were used to track engagement, and 64 artifacts of …

A Decade Of Critical Information Literacy: A Review Of The Literature, Eamon Tewell Jan 2015

A Decade Of Critical Information Literacy: A Review Of The Literature, Eamon Tewell

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

As information literacy continues in its centrality to many academic libraries’ missions, a line of inquiry has developed in response to ACRL’s charge to develop information literate citizens. The literature of critical information literacy questions widely held assumptions about information literacy and considers in what ways librarians may encourage students to engage with and act upon information’s complex and inherently political nature. This review explores the research into critical information literacy, including critical pedagogy and critiques of information literacy, in order to provide an entry point for this emerging approach to information literacy.

Multiple Research Methods As A Way To Explore The Longitudinal Impact Of The Rural Village Library In Africa, Valeda Dent

University Libraries Faculty Publications

This paper will focus on the body of qualitative and quantitative research conducted since 2004 to explore the impact of several rural libraries in Uganda and Burkina Faso, in Africa. This longitudinal study is ongoing, and outcomes are currently being used to support the development of a rural village library framework in Uganda, and perhaps elsewhere on the continent, as well as generate support for these village libraries in Africa. Areas being studied include impact of the libraries on student academic achievement, impact on teaching, impact on local literacy practices, impact on mother/child literacy practices, impact on learning readiness of …

The Rural Library's Role In Ugandan Secondary Students' Reading Habits, Valeda Dent, Geoff Goodman

University Libraries Faculty Publications

This study explores reading and library factors related to secondary school student academic outcomes in rural areas in Uganda. This mixed methods study utilized quantitative data collected as part of a more extensive project to explore six student factors in relation to students’ school, library, and home environments. The Kitengesa Community Library in Uganda (www.kitengesalibrary.org) served as the site for this study. The factors explored for this study include reading frequency, library use frequency, library access, overall grade average, and presence and type of reading materials in the home. Results indicated that both reading frequency and certain types of reading …

Impact Of Freight Traffic On School Walking Decisions In Urban Environments, Stephanie S. Ivey, Marian Levy, Marla B. Royne, Kelsey Ford, Kranthi Guthikonda Jan 2015

Impact Of Freight Traffic On School Walking Decisions In Urban Environments, Stephanie S. Ivey, Marian Levy, Marla B. Royne, Kelsey Ford, Kranthi Guthikonda

Journal of Transportation Management

In light of the decline in social acceptance of walking and biking to school, there is a critical need to examine issues impacting school transportation decisions and to identify strategies to promote healthier behavior. In urban areas with high volume freight corridors, factors affecting school walking decisions can be complicated by increased truck and rail traffic. This paper presents findings from a study of urban neighborhoods in a major southeastern city, including those that are adjacent to freight corridors. Perceptions of neighborhood residents are compared in the context of existing infrastructure and network characteristics (urban vs. urban freight-centric). The results …

Civility And Academic Freedom After Salaita, David Moshman, Frank Edler Jan 2015

Civility And Academic Freedom After Salaita, David Moshman, Frank Edler

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The 2014 unhiring of Professor Steven Salaita by the University of Illinois raises at least three distinct issues: (1) the right of faculty to speak out in public on matters of public concern; (2) the academic freedom of academic departments to make academic decisions; and (3) the role of civility in education. After differentiating the third issue from the first two, we extend the discussion to other recent cases involving civility in education. The cases range from overt coercion to implicit threats and subtle pressures. We explain that uncivil speech is generally protected by the First Amendment but that this …

Economic Development And Female Labor Force Participation In The Middle East And North Africa: A Test Of The U-Shape Hypothesis, Kelsey A. Chapman Jan 2015

Economic Development And Female Labor Force Participation In The Middle East And North Africa: A Test Of The U-Shape Hypothesis, Kelsey A. Chapman

Gettysburg Economic Review

This paper investigates the relationship between economic development and female labor force participation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Using a panel data set of 20 countries in the region for the period of 1990-2012, I develop an econometric model that tests the U-shape hypothesis. This study builds upon previous literature examining the U-shape hypothesis in time series studies for developing countries, and cross-country studies. The results of this paper suggest that there is a U-shaped relationship between economic growth and female labor force participation rates. The MENA region’s low female labor force participation rates can be explained …

2014 Fed Challenge Script: Current State Of The Economy, Jieran Liu, William W. Northrop, Matthew Nadler, Owen J. Rothe, Ryan M. Williams

Gettysburg Economic Review

Good afternoon everyone and thank you for having us here today. Though the recession began in 2007 and officially ended in 2009, recovery has been painfully slow. GDP growth has been insufficient to close the output gap, there continues to be slack in the labor market and inflation has stabilized below the Federal Reserve percent target. We are not meeting our dual mandate of full employment and stable prices even 6 years after the end of the recession. Despite some signs of strengthening in the economy during the past year, we do not believe that economy is on a self-sustaining …

You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz Jan 2015

You Can “Like” It On Paper Too: Reaching Digital Students Through Analog Displays, Rachael Muszkiewicz

Library Faculty Publications

In response to literature on libraries as space and the Millennial generation, this chapter speaks to the importance of the academic library as both social and communal space and how to communicate with today’s college students. These case studies illustrate that students can be reached through analog displays, building an unconscious community between students as a group and students with the library. Community built within the academic library is discussed in light of these analog displays, the current library literature and via sociological positions. It is concluded that although it is thought that students want digital or online communication only, …
