Leveraging Signal Infrastructure For Non-Motorized Counts In A Statewide Program: A Pilot Study, Bryan Philip Blanc Jan 2015

Leveraging Signal Infrastructure For Non-Motorized Counts In A Statewide Program: A Pilot Study, Bryan Philip Blanc

PSU Transportation Seminars

Transportation agencies are beginning to explore and develop non-motorized counting programs. This paper presents the results of a pilot study testing the use of existing signal infrastructure – 2070 signal controllers with advanced software to log pedestrian phase actuations and detections from bicycle lane inductive loops – to count pedestrians and bicycles. The pilot study was conducted at a typical suburban signalized intersection with heavy motorized traffic that was instrumented on all four approaches with pedestrian push buttons and advance inductive loops in the bicycle lane for signal operation. One day (24 hours) of video data were collected as ground …

Labor Market Discrimination: Vietnamese Immigrants, Linus Yamane Jan 2015

Labor Market Discrimination: Vietnamese Immigrants, Linus Yamane

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Vietnamese and East European immigrants face similar obstacles in the US labor market. This provides for an interesting test of racial discrimination in the labor market. Does it make any difference if an immigrant is Asian or White? When Vietnamese immigrants are compared to East European immigrants, Vietnamese men earn 7-9% less than comparable East European men, with more discrimination among the less educated, and in the larger Vietnamese population centers like California. Vietnamese women earn as much as comparable East European women. Vietnamese immigrants, male and female, are much less likely to hold managerial and supervisory positions than comparable …

Exploring The Function Of The Anti-Communist Ideology And Identity In The Vietnamese American Diasporic Community, Long S. Le

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Anti-communist ideology in the Vietnamese American community is increasingly perceived as a destabilizing force. This article argues that when the anti-communist ideology is analyzed across time, persistence and change are part and parcel of the anti-communist identity. So that the anti-communist identity can be organized for other purposes or reproduced to reflect the concerns and needs of the growing and diverse members of the community. Moreover, it is argued that the concept of social capital may prove to be more analytical in delineating the effects of the anti-communist ideology.

A Qualitative Examination Of The Psychosocial Adjustment Of Khmer Refugees In Three Massachusetts Communities, Leakhena Nou

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This paper uses a sociological stress process model to explore the Khmer adult refugees' experience in Massachusetts. The analysis is based on the responses of three focus groups in the Khmer communities of Lowell, Lynn, and Revere, Massachusetts. The focus groups provided an in-depth understanding of sources of stress, stress mediators, and psychosocial adjustment/adaptational patterns for Khmer refugees who had experienced the Cambodian genocide. Symptoms and reactions associated with underlying causes of mental health problems had culturally specific relevance to physical illness and mental health.

No Budget, No Experience, No Problem: Creating A Library Orientation Game For Freshman Engineering Majors, Kelly Giles

Libraries

“Mystery at the Library” is a simple, inexpensive game developed as a library orientation activity for freshman engineering students. Players searched the library building and online to find clues and solve the mystery of a stolen book. Feedback from players and library desk staff was used to improve the game over time. A straightforward narrative with puzzles focused on learning objectives kept players engaged and avoided unnecessary confusion. A post-game survey indicated that the game was both helpful and fun for a majority of respondents.

Dissolved: Lessons Learned From The Portland Multnomah Food Policy Council, Amy K. Coplen, Monica Cuneo

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

The city of Portland, Oregon, is often hailed in news and popular media as the capital of the U.S. alternative food movement. In 2002, the Portland Multnomah Food Policy Council (PMFPC) was established to address the region's growing interest in cultivating a sustainable local food system. Council members contributed to many notable achievements, including a healthy corner store initiative, a beginning farmer training program, and changes to zoning codes to expand urban agriculture. However, the PMFPC was dissolved in the summer of 2012 after local government agencies expressed that the council was losing relevancy. After a decade of conducting food …

اساليب القيادة في ادارة المنظمات العامة: دراسة حالة التحول الاداري من المنظمات العامة او منظمات قطاع الاعمال الي المنظمات الخاصة, Zeinab Shawky Younis, Mohamed _. Awad

Business Administration

Enabling Cyber Physical Systems With Wireless Sensor Networking Technologies, Multiagent System Paradigm, And Natural Ecosystems, Nafaâ Jabeur, Nabil Sahli, Sherali Zeadally Jan 2015

Enabling Cyber Physical Systems With Wireless Sensor Networking Technologies, Multiagent System Paradigm, And Natural Ecosystems, Nafaâ Jabeur, Nabil Sahli, Sherali Zeadally

Information Science Faculty Publications

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are key components in the emergent cyber physical systems (CPSs). They may include hundreds of spatially distributed sensors which interact to solve complex tasks going beyond their individual capabilities. Due to the limited capabilities of sensors, sensor actions cannot meet CPS requirements while controlling and coordinating the operations of physical and engineered systems. To overcome these constraints, we explore the ecosystem metaphor for WSNs with the aim of taking advantage of the efficient adaptation behavior and communication mechanisms of living organisms. By mapping these organisms onto sensors and ecosystems onto WSNs, we highlight shortcomings that prevent …

It's Not My Story To Tell: A Study Of Disclosure In An All Female Group, Amanda Lynn Baggett Jan 2015

It's Not My Story To Tell: A Study Of Disclosure In An All Female Group, Amanda Lynn Baggett

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examined how women who share membership in a close social group use communication to manage the private information of other members of the group. Carol Gilligan’s work in In A Different Voice introduces a moral development theory that women’s ethics are defined by their need for human connection and caring. Communication Management theory was used as an interpretive lens to examine the decisions and behaviors behind a member’s choice to disclose or not disclose the personal information about another member. Research to determine whether the existence of an established group influenced the decision to share or not share …

Resistance To Unjust Immigration Restrictions, Javier S. Hidalgo Jan 2015

Resistance To Unjust Immigration Restrictions, Javier S. Hidalgo

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

State employees use force or the threat of force to restrict immigration.Border guards forcibly detain and incarcerate foreigners who immigrate without state approval. When migrants evade or resist immigration restrictions, border agents sometimes deploy tasers to incapacitate migrants, pepper spray them, shoot them with rubber bullets, and, less frequently, beat migrants with batons, and even fire live ammunition at them. Thousands of migrants perish annually in attempts to evade border agents. 2 State officials also capture and deport migrants who reside in their borders without official authorization. Affluent states have deported millions of unauthorized migrants in recent decades.

A Fundamental Of Scientific Inquiry In Economics, Paul Kim Jan 2015

A Fundamental Of Scientific Inquiry In Economics, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

Mathematics has made significant contributions to the development of economics theories in the past. An emphasis on the use of mathematics has been extensive in economics. However, the assumption, which underlies the use of mathematics, has not been formerly scrutinized. Consequently, errors in the development of economic theories have been unnoticed and misleading theories have been established in economic science. The objective of this article is to develop a model, which can test whether or not an application of mathematics into an economic theory is valid, thus putting mathematics in a proper perspective in economic science.
