Altered Γ-Aminobutyric Acid Neurotransmission In Major Depressive Disorder: A Critical Review Of The Supporting Evidence And The Influence Of Serotonergic Antidepressants, Alan Pehrson, Connie Sanchez Jan 2015

Altered Γ-Aminobutyric Acid Neurotransmission In Major Depressive Disorder: A Critical Review Of The Supporting Evidence And The Influence Of Serotonergic Antidepressants, Alan Pehrson, Connie Sanchez

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Evidence suggesting that central nervous system γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentrations are reduced in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) has been present since at least 1980, and this idea has recently gained support from more recent magnetic resonance spectroscopy data. These observations have led to the assumption that MDD’s underlying etiology is tied to an overall reduction in GABA-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission. In this paper, we review the mechanisms that govern GABA and glutamate concentrations in the brain, and provide a comprehensive and critical evaluation of the clinical data supporting reduced GABA neurotransmission in MDD. This review includes an evaluation of …

The Moderating Effect Of Self-Efficacy On Normal-Weight, Overweight, And Obese Children's Math Achievement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Ashley Wendell Kranjac Jan 2015

The Moderating Effect Of Self-Efficacy On Normal-Weight, Overweight, And Obese Children's Math Achievement: A Longitudinal Analysis, Ashley Wendell Kranjac

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Increased body weight is associated with decreased cognitive function in school-aged children. The role of self-efficacy in shaping the connection between children's educational achievement and obesity-related comorbidities has not been examined to date. Evidence of the predictive ability of self-efficacy in children is demonstrated in cognitive tasks, including math achievement scores. This study examined the relationship between self-efficacy and math achievement in normal weight, overweight, and obese children. I hypothesized that overweight and obese children with higher self-efficacy will be less affected in math achievement than otherwise comparable children with lower self-efficacy. I tested this prediction with multilevel growth modeling …

"We Never Thought It Would Be Like This": Refugees' Experiences In Sicily, Michelle Reale Jan 2015

"We Never Thought It Would Be Like This": Refugees' Experiences In Sicily, Michelle Reale

The Qualitative Report

The arrival of refugees by boat to Sicily is not, perhaps, significant in numbers, but from a humanitarian point of view it is a crisis in the truest sense of the word. Refugees that arrive in port cities are more susceptible to trafficking due to their extra vulnerability and impaired emotional and physical states. The three main preoccupations refugees are: the arduous and often deadly journey, their treatment upon arrival, and rebuilding their lives in a society that does not want them. They often wonder if what they encounter in Sicily is in some ways worse than the place they …

Experience Of Being An Insider And An Outsider During A Qualitative Study With Men Who Have Experienced Significant Weight Loss, Darren D. Moore Jan 2015

Experience Of Being An Insider And An Outsider During A Qualitative Study With Men Who Have Experienced Significant Weight Loss, Darren D. Moore

The Qualitative Report

The major question being answered in the study is, “What is the experience of being an insider/outsider in a study regarding men and significant weight loss?” The purpose of the paper is to explore the experience of being both an insider and an outsider, and specifically to discuss how researcher status and self-disclosure emerged and impacted the research process. The methodology used in the research study is narrative inquiry, specifically self-narrative. In the study, membership role status was found to be difficult to define, inherently complex, and arbitrary at times. Additional research on the topic of membership role status is …

Interpreting Online Discussions: Connecting Artifacts And Experiences In User Studies, Jörgen Skågeby Jan 2015

Interpreting Online Discussions: Connecting Artifacts And Experiences In User Studies, Jörgen Skågeby

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents a methodological effort to connect the specifics of technologies to the details of social practices, in an attempt to deepen our understanding of evolving sociotechnical cultures. More specifically, this paper describes a methodological framework that makes use of online discussions as a vital source of data. The reason the paper focuses on online discussion is that the Internet has become a natural habitat for discussions of high-end technologies, be they physical products or online services. The framework combines interpretative research and attribute-consequence-value (ACV) chain theory – a theory commonly applied to market and consumer research – to …

More Than Altruism: Cultural Norms And Remittances Among Hispanics In The U.S., Monika Lopez Anuarbe, María Amparo Cruz-Saco, Yongjin Park Jan 2015

More Than Altruism: Cultural Norms And Remittances Among Hispanics In The U.S., Monika Lopez Anuarbe, María Amparo Cruz-Saco, Yongjin Park

Economics Faculty Publications

Cultural norms embody the communalism and familism that characterize social structures and traditions of care among certain identity groups, notably, Hispanics. In turn, they affect remitting behavior as they do family dynamics, thereby extending care transnationally. Using the 2006 Latino National Survey, the largest instrument that captures socio-economic variables and political perspectives among Hispanics residing in the U.S., we construct a Hispanic identity index that is used to capture the role of cultural norms in remittance behavior. This index is used as an explanatory variable in a logit model for the probability and frequency of remitting money. We find that …

Low Fidelity Flight Simulation In Collegiate Aviation, Vladimir N. Risukhin Jan 2015

Low Fidelity Flight Simulation In Collegiate Aviation, Vladimir N. Risukhin

Aviation / Aeronautics / Aerospace International Research Conference

Aviation college pilot training programs, lessons and exercises contain portions that do not require training in sophisticated and highly expensive full flight simulators and flight training devices (FTD) with high fidelity of simulation, or in real aircraft flights. Relatively inexpensive personal-computer-based flight simulation facilities named low fidelity simulators (LFS) can boost development of aircraft pilots’ cognitive and behavioral skills. The paper attempts to reveal how the LFS can support aviation college flight training and research activities. In the Western Michigan University College of Aviation, peer mentoring technique proven to be helpful in higher education institutions has been applied to flight …

The Role Of Interpersonal Communication In Multiracial Congregations Of The United Methodist Church, Celeste Eubanks Jan 2015

The Role Of Interpersonal Communication In Multiracial Congregations Of The United Methodist Church, Celeste Eubanks

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

As the racial make-up of the population in the United States has changed over the last 20 years, the racial make-up of The United Methodist Church has remained the same – 90% non-Hispanic white. As a result, the denomination has struggled with attracting members of other ethnicities, in turn resulting in a decline in overall membership. Recognizing that the future of the church is dependent upon diversifying its congregations, The United Methodist Church is now focusing its efforts on developing and growing multiracial congregations. In order to build and sustain these multiracial congregations, the church must figure out how to …

Collegiate aviation program leaders have no greater responsibility than assuring safe flight operations. A Safety Management System (SMS) is an effective framework to present and reinforce key safety principles and can be effectively tailored for the collegiate aviation flight training environment. The collegiate academic tradition of peer review can be effectively leveraged to enable collaboration between collegiate aviation programs and provide a mechanism for continuous improvement of participating programs. This presentation provides a model for establishing a peer review process for collegiate Safety Management Systems and the construction of a password-protected repository for reviewed programs which can be referenced by …
