The Impact Of Corruption On Consumer Markets: Evidence From The Allocation Of Second-Generation Wireless Spectrum In India, Sandip Sukhtankar Feb 2015

The Impact Of Corruption On Consumer Markets: Evidence From The Allocation Of Second-Generation Wireless Spectrum In India, Sandip Sukhtankar

Dartmouth Scholarship

Theoretical predictions of the impact of corruption on economic efficiency are ambiguous, with models allowing for positive, negative, or neutral effects. While much evidence exists on levels of corruption, less is available on its impact, particularly its impacts on consumer markets. This paper investigates empirically the effect of the corrupt sale of spectrum licenses to ineligible firms on the wireless-telecommunications market in India. I find that the corrupt allocation had, at worst, no impact on the number of subscribers, prices, usage, revenues, competition, and measures of quality. I argue that the market-based transfer of licenses to competent firms other than …

Would People Behave Differently If They Better Understood Social Security? Evidence From A Field Experiment, Jeffrey B. Liebman, Erzo F. P. Luttmer Feb 2015

Would People Behave Differently If They Better Understood Social Security? Evidence From A Field Experiment, Jeffrey B. Liebman, Erzo F. P. Luttmer

Dartmouth Scholarship

This paper presents the results of a randomized field experiment that provided information about key Social Security features to older workers. The experiment was designed to examine whether it is possible to affect individual behavior using a relatively inexpensive informational intervention about the provisions of a public program and to explore the mechanisms underlying the behavior change. We find that our relatively mild intervention (sending an informational brochure and an invitation to a web-tutorial) increased labor force participation one year later by 4 percentage points relative to the control group mean of 74 percent. Price Subsidies, Diagnostic Tests, And Targeting Of Malaria Treatment: Evidence From A Randomized Controlled Trial, Jessica Cohen, Pascaline Dupas, Simone Schaner Feb 2015

Price Subsidies, Diagnostic Tests, And Targeting Of Malaria Treatment: Evidence From A Randomized Controlled Trial, Jessica Cohen, Pascaline Dupas, Simone Schaner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Both under- and over-treatment of communicable diseases are public bads. But efforts to decrease one run the risk of increasing the other. Using rich experimental data on household treatment- seeking behavior in Kenya, we study the implications of this trade-off for subsidizing life-saving antimalarials sold over-the-counter at retail drug outlets. We show that a very high subsidy (such as the one under consideration by the international community) dramatically increases access, but nearly one-half of subsidized pills go to patients without malaria. We study two ways to better target subsidized drugs: reducing the subsidy level, and introducing rapid malaria tests over-the-counter. …

Native Mail Carriers In Early America, Marshall Joseph Becker Feb 2015

Native Mail Carriers In Early America, Marshall Joseph Becker

Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications

A review of documents mentioning Native carriers of mail, within and among the American colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, strongly indicates that members of the Lenape tribe, of all those resident in the lower Delaware valley, were considered to be the most reliable and trusted. At later dates the Lenape were recognized as dependable in their skills as guides and explorers, a characteristic noted into the twentieth century. The efforts of Native letter carriers, who did their tasks on foot, also provide us with a broad perspective on the realities of indigenous life and how these peoples integrated …

Unlv School Of Medicine Return On Investment To The State General Fund, Tripp Umbach, Lincy Institute

Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs

Economic activity in the State of Nevada’s economy from the spending of the UNLV School of Medicine will remain inside the state as well as fresh dollars that will flow inside the state because the medical school will generate general fund revenue through a wide variety of taxes. Tripp Umbach estimates that every fresh dollar in economic impact from the UNLV School of Medicine will generate 4.9% in state general fund revenue. As the UNLV School of Medicine matures, the Return on Investment (ROI) to the State of Nevada’s economy will grow.

Own Children With All Parents In The Labor Force For The State Of Nebraska And Legislative Districts And Counties From The 2009-2013 American Community Survey, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Past Publications

The following tables, graphs, and maps look at the number and percentage of own children living in families where all parents present are in the labor force. The data are from a U.S. Census Bureau program called the American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS is an ongoing, nation-wide survey conducted every month. Each year approximately 1 in 40 persons are sampled. During the past 5 years in Nebraska, there has been an average of about 40,000 persons interviewed per year.

While this annual number of interviews is adequate for state-level summaries, for smaller levels of geography like counties and legislative …

The Nebraska Legislature's Planning Committee was created in 2009 with the passage of LB 653 in order to help establish a process of long-term state planning with the Nebraska Legislature. The committee was created to assist state government in identifying emerging trends, assets and challenges of the state and the long-term implications of the decisions made by the Nebraska Legislature.

Efforts during the first two years of the committee focused on the development of a database. The goals and benchmarks included in the database were developed and approved by the Legislature's Planning Committee to present a common-sense and data-driven assessment …

Income Smoothing Due To Unemployment Concerns, Jeffrey Ng, Tharindra Ranasinghe, Guifeng Shi, I-Hwa Yang Feb 2015

Income Smoothing Due To Unemployment Concerns, Jeffrey Ng, Tharindra Ranasinghe, Guifeng Shi, I-Hwa Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Economic theory predicts that top executives and lower-level employees have incentives to smooth income due to compensating wage differential costs and fear of job loss, respectively. Following Agrawal and Matsa (JFE, 2013) who rely on exogenous variations in unemployment insurance benefits to examine how unemployment concerns affect corporate leverage, we examine the link between such benefits and income smoothing. We find that when unemployment insurance benefits are higher and concerns about unemployment are hence lower, there is less income smoothing. This relation is stronger when employees face higher unemployment risk and weaker when the firms’ information and internal control environments …

Dynamic Moral Hazard Without Commitment, Johannes Hörner, Larry Samuelson Feb 2015

Dynamic Moral Hazard Without Commitment, Johannes Hörner, Larry Samuelson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study a discrete-time model of repeated moral hazard without commitment. In every period, a principal finances a project, choosing the scale of the project and a contingent payment plan for an agent, who has the opportunity to appropriate the returns of a successful project unbeknownst the principal. The absence of commitment is reflected both in the solution concept (perfect Bayesian equilibrium) and in the ability of the principal to freely revise the project’s scale from one period to the next. We show that removing commitment from the equilibrium concept is relatively innocuous — if the players are sufficiently patient, …

Collection Revitalization At The University Of New Mexico Libraries, Samuel E. Sisneros

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This article discusses a project that took an early archival manuscript collection that was poorly described and catalogued, and underused and revitalized it (in a sense recovered a lost collection) by re-describing it and digitizing material from the collection for better (new) public access.

Children's Media Making, But Not Sharing: The Potential And Limitations Of Child-Specific Diy Media Websites, Sara Grimes, Deborah A. Fields

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

From drawing pictures to making home movies, children have long produced their own, do-it-yourself (DIY) media at the individual and local scales. Today, children's DIY media creation increasingly takes place online, using digital technologies and tools that allow them to not only produce but also share their ideas with the world. This article relays findings from the first stages of a three-year inquiry project into the opportunities and challenges associated with the rise of children's online DIY media: an extensive media scan to identify websites and an in-depth content analysis of the terms and conditions, privacy policies and overall site …

Developing An Elite Formation Index For Comparative Elite Studies: The Schooling Of Irish And Uk Cabinet Ministers, Brendan O'Rourke, John Hogan, Paul Donnelly

Articles

Elites and their formation have become a matter of increasing public concern and research interest in recent years. The lessons from such research can be made more generalisable if a measure of elite formation could be developed that is comparable across different elite formation systems, whether they differ by elite, time or country. But, the nature of elite formation renders this a complex task. Nevertheless, in this article, by building upon measures employed in other fields such as industrial economics, indices are constructed that facilitate the comparison of elite formation systems. This is illustrated through a comparison of the schooling …

Citizens Of The World: An Autoethnography Of Couchsurfing And Uncertainty Reduction Theory, Anderson Santos Feb 2015

Citizens Of The World: An Autoethnography Of Couchsurfing And Uncertainty Reduction Theory, Anderson Santos

Masters Theses

This study examines through an autoethnography the culture of couchsurfing and the process of hospitality networks through computer mediated communication in five European countries during three months of 2012. Using Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a framework the study was divided into five topics and analyzed using Uncertainty reduction theory. The study found that couchsurfers have needs and prioritize these needs as The hierarchy of needs predicts. CouchSurfers also employ uncertainty reduction strategies similar to those used within computer mediated communication when choosing their host. Over 20 hosting experiences have been analyzed in this study. The field data was collected …

Rural Implications Of Medicaid Expansion Under The Affordable Care Act, Erika C. Ziller Phd, Jennifer D. Lenardson Mhs, Andrew F. Coburn Phd

Medicaid

In this brief, researchers from the Maine Rural Health Research Center (University of Southern Maine, Muskie School of Public Service) present findings from a SHARE-funded evaluation of the rural implications of Medicaid expansion under the ACA.

The authors examine the following issues:

  • The extent to which prior public health insurance expansions have covered rural populations
  • Whether rural residents who are expected to be newly eligible for Medicaid in 2014 differ from their urban counterparts
  • The extent to which rural individuals might differentially benefit from the ACA Medicaid expansion in light of the expansion becoming optional
  • Whether rural enrollees are likely …

An Examination Of Victory Seeker Use And Recidivism, Michael Rutkowski Feb 2015

An Examination Of Victory Seeker Use And Recidivism, Michael Rutkowski

Theses and Dissertations

The current study extended earlier findings about the RealVictory program by using a larger sample and by examining Victory Seeker phone use in more detail. Using a sample of 144 juveniles, it was found that as the number of calls answered increased, the likelihood of a rearrest and the number of rearrests decreased slightly but the differences were not statistically significant. However, as the number of calls increased, the likelihood of a felony rearrest decreased significantly and the total number of felony arrests decreased significantly. These findings suggest that Victory Seeker may be a useful tool to reinforce and provide …

Forgiveness: A Vital Skill To Cope With Employment Issues, Susan Stuntzner Feb 2015

Forgiveness: A Vital Skill To Cope With Employment Issues, Susan Stuntzner

Counseling Faculty Publications

Forgiveness is a topic most people probably associate with personal values, spirituality, or religiosity. It may even be considered in relation to living a healthier lifestyle but not in relation to employment concerns or injustices. Despite, its traditional associations and the perspectives most commonly held, forgiveness is a value, a practice, and a way of life that benefits to person who practices it more than the person who committed the offense, hurt, or perceived wrongdoing. Forgiveness is also a skill and a process which can be learned or taught and has value in regards to employment issues and concerns.
