Library Presentations

University of Kentucky digitized materials from their chosen agency, the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The titles had already been cataloged in MARC, but they needed Dublin Core metadata for loading the data into their digital library, and also MARC for the new electronic versions, cataloging according to current RDA standards. In this talk, the presenter will describe their workflow, and some of the difficulties encountered along the way.

State Sovereignty As A Subject Of Public International Law, Fide Maksut Feb 2015

State Sovereignty As A Subject Of Public International Law, Fide Maksut

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of sovereignty of states is a rather complex one to address but indeed one of central importance for any discussion pertaining to International Law.

This derives from the fact that only sovereign states are “recognized” subjects and makers of Public International Law[1] (PIL).

One aspect seems to be widely accepted: just as the birth of a human being marks the beginning of his or her legal personality[2], a state’s recognition as sovereign will likewise acknowledge its capacity to be subject of international law normative framework. For that reason, the establishment of a State as …

Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring For Scotts Bluff National Monument, 2014 Annual Report, Michael Prowatzke, Stephen K. Wilson

United States National Park Service: Publications

Abstract

This report presents the results of vegetation monitoring efforts in 2014 at Scotts Bluff National Monument (SCBL) by the Northern Great Plains Inventory and Monitoring Network (NGPN).

During the fourth full year of field work, crew members from NGPN visited eight plant community monitoring plots to collect data on the vegetation at SCBL. This is part of a long-term monitoring effort that will sample eight of 20 randomly located upland plots every year, so that each plot is visited for two consecutive years and then rested for three years, on a five-year rotating basis. Additionally, NGPN staff also visited …

Impact And Correlation Of Environmental Conditions On Pollen Counts In Karachi, Pakistan., Anjum Perveen, Muneeba Khan, Shaista Zeb, Asif Ali Imam

Department of Medicine

A quantitative and qualitative survey of airborne pollen was performed in the city of Karachi, and the pollen counts were correlated with different climatic conditions. The aim of the study was to determine the possible effect of meteorological factors on airborne pollen distribution in the atmosphere of Karachi city. Pollen sampling was carried out by using Burkard spore Trap for the period of August 2009 to July 2010, and a total of 2,922 pollen grains/m(3) were recorded. In this survey, 22 pollen types were recognized. The highest pollen count was contributed by Poaceae pollen type (1,242 pollen grains/m(3)) followed by …

Unbiased Instrumental Variables Estimation Under Known First-Stage Sign, Isaiah Andrews, Timothy B. Armstrong Feb 2015

Unbiased Instrumental Variables Estimation Under Known First-Stage Sign, Isaiah Andrews, Timothy B. Armstrong

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We derive mean-unbiased estimators for the structural parameter in instrumental variables models with a single endogenous regressor where the sign of one or more first stage coefficients is known. In the case with a single instrument, the unbiased estimator is unique. For cases with multiple instruments we propose a class of unbiased estimators and show that an estimator within this class is efficient when the instruments are strong. We show numerically that unbiasedness does not come at a cost of increased dispersion in models with a single instrument: in this case the unbiased estimator is less dispersed than the 2SLS …

We derive mean-unbiased estimators for the structural parameter in instrumental variables models with a single endogenous regressor where the sign of one or more first stage coefficients is known. In the case with a single instrument, there is a unique non-randomized unbiased estimator based on the reduced-form and first-stage regression estimates. For cases with multiple instruments we propose a class of unbiased estimators and show that an estimator within this class is efficient when the instruments are strong. We show numerically that unbiasedness does not come at a cost of increased dispersion in models with a single instrument: in this …

Transparency And Distressed Sales Under Asymmetric Information, William Fuchs, Andrzej Skrzypacz

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We analyze price transparency in a dynamic market with private information and correlated values. Uninformed buyers compete inter- and intra-temporarily for a good sold by an informed seller suffering a liquidity shock. We contrast public versus private price offers. In a two-period case all equilibria with private offers have more trade than any equilibrium with public offers; under some additional conditions we show Pareto-dominance of the private-offers equilibria. If a failure to trade by the deadline results in an efficiency loss, public offers can induce a market breakdown before the deadline, while trade never stops with private offers.

Dynamic Mechanisms Without Money, Yingni Guo, Johannes Hörner Feb 2015

Dynamic Mechanisms Without Money, Yingni Guo, Johannes Hörner

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We analyze the optimal design of dynamic mechanisms in the absence of transfers. The designer uses future allocation decisions as a way of eliciting private information. Values evolve according to a two-state Markov chain. We solve for the optimal allocation rule, which admits a simple implementation. Unlike with transfers, efficiency decreases over time, and both immiseration and its polar opposite are possible long-run outcomes. Considering the limiting environment in which time is continuous, we show that persistence hurts.

Estimating The Production Function For Human Capital: Results From A Randomized Control Trial In Colombia, Sarah Cattan, Emla Fitzsimons, Costas Meghir, Marta Rubio-Codina

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We examine the channels through which a randomized early childhood intervention in Colombia led to significant gains in cognitive and socio-emotional skills among a sample of disadvantaged children. We estimate production functions for cognitive and socio-emotional skills as a function of maternal skills and child’s past skills, as well as material and time investments that are treated as endogenous. The effects of the program can be fully explained by increases in parental investments, which have strong effects on outcomes and are complementary to both maternal skills and child’s past skills.

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We examine the channels through which a randomized early childhood intervention in Colombia led to significant gains in cognitive and socio-emotional skills among a sample of disadvantaged children aged 12 to 24 months at baseline. We estimate the determinants of material and time investments in these children and evaluate the impact of the treatment on such investments. We then estimate the production functions for cognitive and socio-emotional skills. The effects of the program can be explained by increases in parental investments, which have strong effects on outcomes and are complementary to both maternal skills and child’s baseline skills.

Innovation Adoption By Forward-Looking Social Learners, Mira Frick, Yuhta Ishii Feb 2015

Innovation Adoption By Forward-Looking Social Learners, Mira Frick, Yuhta Ishii

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Motivated by the rise of social media, we build a model studying the effect of an economy’s potential for social learning on the adoption of innovations of uncertain quality. Provided consumers are forward-looking (i.e., recognize the value of waiting for information), equilibrium dynamics depend non-trivially on qualitative and quantitative features of the informational environment. We identify informational environments that are subject to a saturation effect, whereby increased opportunities for social learning can slow down adoption and learning and do not increase consumer welfare. We also suggest a novel, purely informational explanation for different commonly observed adoption curves (S-shaped vs. concave).

Money As Minimal Complexity, Pradeep Dubey, Siddhartha Sahi, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We consider mechanisms that provide traders the opportunity to exchange commodity i for commodity j , for certain ordered pairs ij . Given any connected graph G of opportunities, we show that there is a unique mechanism M G that satisfies some natural conditions of “fairness” and “convenience.” Let M ( m ) denote the class of mechanisms M G obtained by varying G on the commodity set {1, …, m }. We define the complexity of a mechanism M in M (m) to be a pair of integers τ( M ), π( M ) which represent the “time” required …

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

Bet She'an III Nysa-Scythopolis: The Southern and Severan Theaters. Part 2: The Architecture provides an architectural analysis and a proposed reconstruction of the Southern and Severan Theaters in Nysa-Scythopolis based on the stratigraphy and the finds revealed in the excavations conducted by Applebaum in 1960–1962 and the IAA, in 1986–2002. It further presents the development of Roman theaters and their integration into the civic centers of the poleis of the Roman East as an on-going process of construction and renovation that corresponded with the urban development and prosperity of the cities, from the late first century BCE to the mid-third …

Stable Isotope And Ancient Dna Analysis Of Dog Remains From Cathlapotle (45cl1), A Contact-Era Site On The Lower Columbia River, Kenneth M. Ames, Michael P. Richards, Camilla F. Speller, Dongya Y. Yang, R. Lee Lyman, Virginia L. Butler

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study reports ancient DNA (aDNA) and stable isotope analyses of eight dog skeletal elements from the Cathlapotle site on the Lower Columbia River of the western United States. The aDNA analysis confirmed the elements as dogs (Canis lupus familiaris). Two haplotypes were found, both of which group within dog Clade A, and have patchy distributions to the north in British Columbia and as far south as Teotihuacan (Mexico). The isotopic analysis showed that the dogs’ dietary protein was derived almost exclusively from marine sources. Lower Columbia River ethnohistoric accounts and Cathlapotle zooarchaeological records indicate that while marine fish were …

Number 1 - Resistance Is Fruitful: Bijagos Of Guinea-Bissau, Brandon D. Lundy

Peace and Conflict Management Working Papers Series

Drawing on both ethnographic and historical accounts, this paper describes how ethnic identification patterns of belonging are fashioned out of localized, national, regional, and global processes of both engagement and protectionism. The Bijagos of Guinea-Bissau have maintained a sense of group cohesion during periods of contact, conflict, and resistance. This paper argues that the contemporary local-global interplay is fostering a new moment of rupture in time and space for the Bijagos. The Bijagos, oft footnoted in the accounts of Bissau-Guinean culture and history, are actively contributing to the social dialogue of resistance against the homogenizing effects of globalization. How do …

Identifying Unethical Personally Identifiable Information (Pii) Privacy Violations Committed By Is/It Practitioners: A Comparison To Computing Moral Exemplars, Mark H. Rosenbaum

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

In some instances, Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) practitioners have been noted to commit privacy violations to Personally Identifiable Information (PII). However, computing exemplars, due to their notable dispositional Hallmark Features of morality, understandings of ethical abstractions, and other components that comprise their virtuous makeups, are theoretically less likely to commit privacy violations to PII. This research attempted to verify if those IS/IT practitioners who identify with some of the Hallmark Features of moral and computing exemplar were less willing to commit privacy violations to PII than were those IS/IT practitioners that did not identify themselves with some of …
