The Birth Order Effect: The Impact Of Familial Position On The Development Of Communication Style, Janis M. Carmichael Feb 2015

The Birth Order Effect: The Impact Of Familial Position On The Development Of Communication Style, Janis M. Carmichael

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Is there a connection between birth order and communication? The answer to this question has been sought after by researchers and theorists for decades. Yet documenting incontrovertible proof of the birth order effect remains elusive. Results of birth order research vary widely depending on the focus of the study. In many instances, results vary because of differences in research approach and methods used to measure data. This research study was conducted to examine the effect ofbirth order on the development of communication preference. The premise of the study is that birth order has a measurable effect on communication efficacy within …

The Power Gossip And Rumour Have In Shaping Online Identity And Reputation: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Michael Nycyk Feb 2015

The Power Gossip And Rumour Have In Shaping Online Identity And Reputation: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Michael Nycyk

The Qualitative Report

What is posted on the Internet about a person’s identity and reputation has the potential power to affect others’ perceptions of them. This study aims to understand and describe how this occurs by undertaking a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of the website Lamebook. It asks in what ways people’s online identity and reputation are shaped by others, or by one’s self, that may influence others’ opinions about them and how is this being done? The results suggest several characteristics of power relations are being exercised by people against others and themselves that harm their identity and reputation. These are achieved …

Learning Autoethnography: A Review Of Autoethnography: Understanding Qualitative Research, Daniel C. Allen

The Qualitative Report

Tony E. Adams, Stacy Jones, and Carolyn Ellis’ publication of Autoethnography explains the scope and process of conducting autoethnographic research and its uses of self-examination and society. As a recent graduate, the author examined his own experiences in graduate school and the debates over quantitative and qualitative research methodologies as he read the text. The book outlined the purposes, procedures, and methods to determine validity in autoethnographic research by proffering personal examples and narratives to elucidate the research paradigm.

A Simple Solution To The Distance Puzzle: Balanced Data And Poisson Estimation, Roger White, David Buehler Feb 2015

A Simple Solution To The Distance Puzzle: Balanced Data And Poisson Estimation, Roger White, David Buehler

Economics

We propose the use of a balanced panel data set and Poisson regression as a solution to the distance puzzle. Employing annual data for the period 1972–2010, we confirm the existence of the puzzle by applying OLS regression to both an unbalanced panel data set and a narrowly defined balanced panel. We find that Poisson regression remedies the distance puzzle, producing a constant trend for the distance coefficient when the unbalanced panel is examined and a positive trend for the balanced data. The findings confirm the common intuition that the influence of transport costs on trade flows has decreased over …

Serials Renewal Cycle: Doing It The Smu (A Different U) Way!, Kai Leong Heng

Research Collection Library

Academic libraries typically renew their serials subscriptions (Individual print and/or online titles) annually by comparing prices, availability and service terms proposed by different subscription agents. In Singapore (and possibly other countries in the region), we have only up to 3 (active and competing) subscription agents to choose from. At Singapore Management University (SMU), the library maintains about 500 serials titles. The “legacy” practice had been to split the order between the two of larger agents and designate a staff each to take charge of related operational matters. This session will present a different approach in the serials renewal cycle which …

Daringly Different: The Making Of The Singapore Management University, Kevin Y. L. Tan

Oral History Collection

This is a book about the founding and early years of Asia’s first university in the 21st century - the Singapore Management University or SMU. It provides a background to tertiary education in Singapore to set the scene and offer the reader a glimpse of the landscape in which the remarkable changes leading to SMU’s establishment, and ramifications flowing therefrom, took place. So many of the key actors who were intimately connected to this grand story are still around and actively engaged in the life of SMU, and thus the book benefitted greatly from first-hand interviews with a number of …

Most Admired Leader/Most Admired Follower, Susan D. Baker, Erica L. Anthony, Susan A. Stites-Doe

Organization Management Journal

In introducing concepts of leadership and followership to students, this experiential exercise highlights qualities associated with the leader and follower roles. Various learning objectives guide the development of the exercise. They focus on identification of behavioral qualities possessed by both leaders and followers and on the importance of the leader-follower relationship to the organization’s achievement of goals. Theoretical underpinnings are stressed throughout. In the exercise, students individually develop a list of characteristics associated with their own most admired leader or follower and then share their lists in small groups. In plenary discussion, groups share all characteristics identified, and the instructor …

Setting Goals In Different Roles: Applying Key Results From The Goal-Setting Literature, Lynn E. Miller, Richard M. Weiss Feb 2015

Setting Goals In Different Roles: Applying Key Results From The Goal-Setting Literature, Lynn E. Miller, Richard M. Weiss

Organization Management Journal

Decades of research have demonstrated that managers can effect substantial performance improvements by setting challenging and specific performance goals (Locke & Latham, 2002), providing goal-relevant feedback on a regular basis (Karakowsky & Mann, 2008), and, when appropriate, involving subordinates in goal setting (Stansfield & Longenecker, 2006). This article reviews core findings from the goal setting literature, and presents a collaborative exercise in which teams of students apply these findings to address management problems in five fictitious scenarios. Debriefing tips cite additional research evidence to allow for more nuanced classroom discussion of goal setting. A pretest indicated that prior to completing …

Mission-Centric Learning: Developing Students’ Workplace Readiness Skills, Lisa A. Burke-Smalley, Kathleen Wheatley

Organization Management Journal

We discuss and evaluate the implementation of a mission-centric course project that is strategically tied to learning outcomes important to colleges of business. Specifically, to support our college’s mission, undergraduate students enrolled in a training and development class were tasked with applying course concepts to assess the need for, to design, and to deliver (to other business students) workplace readiness training. To aid other management educators interested in adopting similar strategically aligned and feedback-rich learning experiences, we outline and discuss relevant project planning, design, and facilitation issues, as well as present a summary of initial results derived from this project.

Hegemony, Gender Stereotypes And Disney: A Content Analysis Of Frozen And Snow White, Larisa Arnold, Mckenna Seidl, Ariel Deloney

Concordia Journal of Communication Research

A content analysis was conducted and focused on the gender roles, gender expectations, and social norms in Disney films. The researchers studied one past Disney film, Snow White and compared it with the most recent Disney film, Frozen to draw distinctions and similarities between them. Through a chi square test of association comparing specific Disney roles of both men and women, minimum differences have been shown between past and recent films. Disney has made changes in their films by removing some overt gender stereotypes from the films; however, they continue to use many of these stereotypical gender expectations. The data …
