Introducing Fortenbaugh Intern Melanie, Melanie L. Fernandes
Blogging the Library
My name is Melanie and I am a Fortenbaugh Intern in Special Collections. This is my third week in Special Collections, and I have to say I am loving the experience! I have been giving the task of cataloging the Potuchek Papers. I personally find college history to be very interesting, so I am having a great time going through these papers and examining how past courses were taught. There are also many materials having to do with college committees, and I am getting to see how these different organizations helped make Gettysburg College what it is today. [excerpt …

The bulk of the collection is the notes and papers from courses Mrs. Wills took while at Georgia State College for Women. However, these papers do not represent her entire course load during her academic career; it appears that many of them come from her junior and senior years. Most of the materials are from her education, psychology and sociology courses, probably required for her major.

Special Collections Finding Aids
Though this collection encompasses 1953 to 1990, the most comprehensive records are found from 1953 to 1971 and from 1973 to 1977. Materials from other years are less detailed and systematic in comparison, with seeming gaps in recording.
The meeting minutes provide an inkling of the community issues with which the area pastors concerned themselves. Correspondence included in this collection may elaborate on some of those issues. Church and pastor member listings also comprise the minutes. Financial records, as well as minutes, reflect the programs supported by the Ministerial Association. For the most part, these records are detailed, including statements, …

Psychology Faculty Publications
This study investigates the link between prenatal exposure to alcohol and drugs, parental perceptions of neighborhood safety and support, and the diagnosis of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) among a nationally representative sample of youth. A subset of variables from a larger study, the 2001–2004 National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement (NCS-A), as well as its supplemental parental surveys, was analyzed in this study. This study used a specific selection of 5,924 adolescents and their parents from the NCS-A. Results suggest a correlation between prenatal caffeine use and a subsequent ODD diagnosis in female adolescents. Overall correlations between neighborhood drug use/sales and minority …

Comparing The Experiences And Withdrawal Considerations Of Treatment And Regular Foster Care Parents: The Canadian Perspective, Jessica Smith, Susan Rodger, Jason Brown, Laurel E. Pickel, Wendy Den Dunnen, Alan W. Leschied Dr.
Journal Articles
This study investigated differences in the experiences of Canadian foster parents providing regular and treatment foster care and their consideration to withdraw from their position. Survey responses from 852 foster parents were analyzed subsequent to separating the participants into two groups based on the primary type of care they provided (regular N = 454; treatment N = 398). Results revealed that treatment foster care parents considered withdrawing at a higher rate compared to regular foster care parents. Subsequent analysis revealed numerous differences between the two groups regarding foster parents’ experiences in fostering and reasons to withdraw. The results are discussed …

Student Criminality: The Influence Of Strain, Family And Peers, Annie Cvetan
Student Criminality: The Influence Of Strain, Family And Peers, Annie Cvetan
Theses and Dissertations
General strain theory suggests that a number of conditioning factors affect who is more likely to respond to strain with crime. Research has also demonstrated that an individual's self-complexity plays a role in how an individual responds to strain. Self-complexity refers to (1) the number of identities individuals perceive as important to themselves; and (2) the varied characteristics they ascribe to these identities. This research study analyzed if college students were committing crime, whether the crimes were major or minor in nature, and if criminality was a new behavior or an imported one. This study also looked at who, if …

Assessing Political Skill For Management Selection, Nneka Joseph
Assessing Political Skill For Management Selection, Nneka Joseph
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Political skill has been described as using human resources and manipulating social exchanges to influence group outcomes (Mintzberg, 1983). Researchers have found that political skill has significant relationships with constructs such as contextual performance, career satisfaction and leadership. Based on these empirical findings it may be beneficial to include a measure of political skill as part of a selection process. In this study, different methods were explored for measuring political skill that may be appropriate for administrative purposes such as the self-rated questionnaire called the Political Skill Inventory (PSI), a situational judgment test (SJT) and the structured interview. A sample …

I am very excited to work in the Reference Department this semester! I have completed my first two weeks, which I spent training with different members of the Reference staff. I really enjoyed being able to learn from each of them, to see what their strengths were and hearing their pieces of advice. Now that my training is over, I get to start working the reference desk and handling questions on my own! [excerpt]

The United States has a current population of approximately 313.9 million people. In 2013, more than 600 million users had active accounted on Qzone, China’s largest social media site (Millward 2013). Although discussions of social media tend to assume American or European users, social media is a worldwide phenomenon, and different locales bring different concerns to bear on social media ethics. China not only leads the world in terms of sheer numbers of users, but also has the most active environment for social media, ranging from instant chat platforms like QQ to blogs, microblogs, social networking sites, and gaming platforms. …

Best Practices For Facilitating Diversity In The Online Classroom, Michelle Anne Rog
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
This project, Facilitating Diversity in the Online Classroom – Best Practices, explores four best practices for facilitating diversity in the online classroom. The philosophical and ethical framework for this study is built on Martin Buber’s belief that people must be open to dialogue and interested in participating in it and that they stay attentive to another’s uniqueness and how it matters. Grounded in the theory of Critical Pedagogy, this study urges teachers to be open-minded to change and to affect and shape he environment around them. The eLearning course is designed to offer teachers a foundational set of best practices …

François Le Champi: A New Émile, Vicki De Vries
François Le Champi: A New Émile, Vicki De Vries
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Despite its frequent classification as a pastoral novel, George Sand’s François le champi advocates forcefully for better treatment of abandoned children. During the nineteenth century, much debate centred on how best to ensure their care, education and integration into society. Sand’s solution, embodied by her eponymous protagonist, bears a striking resemblance to the ideal Jean-Jacques Rousseau proposes in his Émile, ou de l’éducation. Sand’s modelling of François on Rousseau’s Émile had personal roots, but would also have resonated with contemporary readers, many of whom considered Rousseau an authority on child-rearing and education. Sand’s use of Émile as intertext lends …
Gender Differences In Depression Across Parental Roles, Kevin Shafer, Garrett T. Pace
Gender Differences In Depression Across Parental Roles, Kevin Shafer, Garrett T. Pace
Faculty Publications
Prior research has focused on the relationship between parenthood and psychological well-being, with mixed results. Some studies have also addressed potential gender differences in this relationship, again yielding varied findings. One reason may be methodological choices pursued in these studies, including the lack of focus on combined parental roles (for example, biological parent and stepparent). The authors used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 (N = 6,276) and multinomial treatment models to address how combined roles influence depressive symptoms in mothers and fathers. Further, they explored potential gender differences. Their results indicated that having multiple parental roles …
